Andrew on his switch

Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 12:05 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Former DNC Chairman and superdelegate Joe Andrew drew a sharp line in the sand between himself and Clinton and called for the rest of the superdelegates -- and Democrats in his home state of Indiana -- to “heal the rift in this party and to unite around Barack Obama now,” he said. “It’s time for us to take on John McCain,” who he reiterated has “been helped by this process.”

The former Bill Clinton-appointed DNC chairman and early Hillary Clinton backer said Clinton’s latest stand on the gas tax holiday, which he said essentially amounted to nothing more than political pandering, was “really one of the straws that broke the camel’s back” in his decision to switch from Clinton to Obama.

“We have two good candidates, but we have two people who’ve run their campaigns in two different ways,” Andrew said. “Barack Obama is serious about changing the process in politics …. That’s what inspires me, and I haven’t been inspired in a long time. I’m Inspired by someone who says you know we don’t have to play the game.

“The gas tax [proposal] is a perfect example of that. It’s also important to point out when someone is pandering and seeking political gain, as opposed to standing up for principle.”

Whether it was Obama’s handling of Wright or the gas tax holiday, Andrew said, “What you see is a principled stand, and that is truly shocking to people like me who’ve been in politics a long time.”

Andrew went further on why he thinks Obama is the better candidate. “Barack Obama has to be the winner of our nomination,” he said, citing that he has “more appeal to moderate, centrist America. I’ve always been seen as a centrist in our party. It’s not just about positions; it’s also about tone, it’s about temperament.”

Andrew tried to strike a unifying chord, saying Clinton and Gore would go down as the best tandem to serve the office. He also called Clinton and Obama an “embarrassment of riches” and said they were both good candidates. “You can be for someone without being against someone else,” he said, but he added, “What I assume … is that she’d [Clinton] play the political theatre better than anyone else.”

He said that he’d expect her to be good at putting out “symbols” and “signifiers” that would best get a “majority of people her way. What’s inspiring about Barack Obama is that he doesn’t do that. What I saw were principled answers and policy solutions. He’s not going to get into political theatre … not going to put on that Kabuki Mask and do that.”

He again called Obama “principled,” who “stands up and says, ‘No we don’t have to do that. We can sit around a kitchen table and talk about real solutions … not about something that’ll save you a half tank of gas.”

Andrew also wrote a letter explaining his switch and tried to pre-but potential Clinton surrogate attacks on him for making the move. Here are some excerpts:

My endorsement of Senator Obama will not be welcome news to my friends and family at the Clinton campaign.  If the campaign's surrogates called Governor Bill Richardson, a respected former member of President Clinton's cabinet, a "Judas" for endorsing Senator Obama, we can all imagine how they will treat somebody like me.  They are the best practitioners of the old politics, so they will no doubt call me a traitor, an opportunist and a hypocrite.  I will be branded as disloyal, power-hungry, but most importantly, they will use the exact words that Republicans used to attack me when I was defending President Clinton.

When they use the same attacks made on me when I was defending them, they prove the callow hypocrisy of the old politics first perfected by Republicans.  I am an expert on this because these were the exact tools that I mastered as a campaign volunteer, a campaign manager, a State Party Chair and the National Chair of our Party.

Innuendo is easy. The truth is hard.

Sound bites are easy. Solutions are hard.

Spin is simple and easy.  Struggling with facts is complicated and hard.

The old players of the old political game will claim that I am betraying my old friend Senator Evan Bayh by switching my support to Senator Obama.  I believe that Evan Bayh would be a great President, and therefore a great Vice President.  I will continue to argue that he would be a great choice to be on the ticket with Barack Obama.

Read This Voters....  It's stunning that Clinton will lie her way into any thing... This woman is sick!!

Clinton Decries China's Acquisition of Indiana Company -- Ignoring Her Husband's Role in the Sale

ABC News reported Hillary lied about Indiana company Magnequench.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=4757257&page=1

When will MSNBC cover this expanding story?
Here comes the fire from the Clinton supporters.  ----------Charge!!!!!!!!!

I love being a Republican in 2008.  There are Dems willing to vote for my candidate even many of my fellow Republicans find trouble in doing the same.  But I'm glad to know we will have a candidate who wont raise our taxes in office in 09'.
The Clinton campaign has practiced 'OLD' politics throughout this process. I expect no less from them.  For me, the pure dissappointment that I feel is for our country & media's overreaction to Rev. Wright. First, the reverend is not running for office. Next, you have never heard, read or seen any type of that stuff from Barack Obama. Third, why is Obama's church under scrutiny? Finally, the clear crossing of church & state line should make every religous devout to the atheist American completely outraged!  Every church has the right, as every person, to critique our government & policies, but if & when all our politicians are held accountable for a religous group's views, we all will suffer.

We are a better country than this.  For goodness sake, it's 2008, MOVE ON!
I like someone acting on the courage of his convictions, particularly for the good of the party and the country.
Meanwhile, Obama suffered from a terrible wave of polls, with the latest poll from North Carolina showing CLINTON in the lead; also, g-e polls from FL and OH have Clinton outpacing Obama by more than 10%! Full roundup: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/05/obama-suffers-worrisome-wave-of-polls.html
And who is this person and why is he relevant?
Help us Hillary Clinton! Run as an independent, Blue Moose II, and save us from Obama.
Obama is has "more appeal to moderate, centrist America." -Andrew

What are you smoking Andrew?

Obama is the most liberal Senator in the Senate having never crossed the Senate aisle to vote for a bipartisan bill like Clinton and McCain.
You can read his entire insperational letter at Huffingtonpost.com, this man wrote so well why we need Obama for our next President.....

CAHNGE AND HOPE 08

OBAMA 08
Didn't Obama also get the endorsement of Texas DNC member John Patrick?  This was reported on Halperin's TIME blog)
Here is the real truth people, read this ABC and why no one in MSM has pick this up.

Speak for yourself, Mr Andrew. The man is a fake, a fraud and a user. And, quit trying to rob people of their right to vote.
The last paragraph is intriguing. For the last 15 months, I've had the feeling an unofficial arrangement was in place for - assuming a Clinton nomination - Evan Bayh to be the running mate. Did Joe Andrew just validate this notion?

Whether he did or didn't, I agree Bayh would be a good short-list consideration for Obama. In the end, I suspect Obama will go another way, but Bayh should be considered.
What an incredibly brave man, though I fear for him.  Hope he doesn't end up in Fort Marcy Park like Vince Foster.
At noon today it was reported on the news that the latest poll by teleseach shows Hillary Clinton with a 10 point lead over Obama 48-38 percent among likely voters in the Indiana primary. Maybe the voters have a different opinion!
Other sites are writing about this guy being smashed with e-mails and phone calls.Curious why so many dems are trying to end the process.Does it have anything to do with the the fact that the Rezko vacant lot is entirely owned by Obama, not just a piecce?Or Newsmax announcing another lobbyist pating Obama thousands when he was broke? Those webs are weaving from Obamas decievings.I must commend Boston Legal for outing the Democratic party in all its crazy rules and elitism.
So what I've been saying all along!! Most people in this country want someone with experience and I'm not talking YEARS of legistlation but years advocating for working class american.  We need a President for all of America and I think the choices that Obama has made in his life have proven that he will be divisive.  If you don't subscribe to black separatism then whey on earth would you be a member of a black separatist church?  That would be like me saying I've attended KKK meetings for 20 years but I don't support everything they say.  That just doesn't ring true with most people.  I think it's more likely that Wrights explanation (the guy who's known him for 20 years verses his supporters who've only been acquainted with him for a little over a year) hit the nail on the head when he said that Obama said what he said denouncing Wright's comments because he is a politican and says what he says to get elected.  That makes sense a lot more then his denunciation ONLY after being personally affected.
WOW!!!!! This says it all!!! People in the Clinton Camp jumping ship speaks volumes about what the Clintons really are. First Richardson, then the Fundraiser guy, now Joe Andrew. And this is the strongest language I have heard from any of them. Take this as a lesson all you Clinton supporters.
This is great to hear. I really liked both candidates going in to this, but it is time for us to have a candidate. Since Obama is winning by every measure, I agree with the choice.  I think the Clintons (and hopefully her supporters) will rally behind Obama when the time comes.
Drip.  Drip. Drip.  Another Super from TX has announced for Obama.  Today's score: Obama 5 Clinton 0 (1-1).
To Mr Andrew.

"The National Republican Congressional Committee this week began using Obama's image to attack Democratic special election candidates in Mississippi and Louisiana, where polls show district residents view the Illinois Senator unfavorably by about a two-to-one margin. In response, one of those candidates, Travis Childers in Mississippi, has sought to distance himself from Obama."

I also disagree with you when you analyze the voting patterns of the primary, HRC has won majorities in  more demographics than BO.  In fact without 90% of the black vote he would not be winning.  He will not be getting my vote in November.  I see him as aloof and remote.  Some call it zen-like.  I see it as cold and passionless.  He approaches problems from an academic point of view with very little emotion.  He is in my opinion an intellectual snob who looks down on people.
Wow!  Well said!
FirstRead - where is the news on the convition last Friday of Clinton's former pastor on child molestation charges?
What about Hellary's latest fabrication about Mangequench???  This really needs to be brought to the country's attention. They jump on Obama about a flag pin when the Clintons could have prevented Mangequench from going to China and now Hellary has an ad saying that it's Bush's fault. She cannot and will not be president of this country.
Wow!!

This is HUGE!!!!
Finally someone NOT afraid of the Clintons, and willing to stand up for the American people. Thank you Mr. Joe Andrew.
To call the man a "Judas" would be too kind. Talk about political pandering...the man thinks Obama is going to get the nomination and he wants to be on the right side...how unfortunate for him when Hillary wins and wins the presidency. Crawling on his knees will not help him then.
WOW!
I have watched Hardball since its inception - if Chris Matthews doesn't stop beating the Wright issue to death - I'm done with him.  It's over, Chris, it's over. Let it alone.
In a nutshell, he is tired of the same old political BS that HRC will continue if she is elected.

Wow, this coming from a former DNC chairman appointed by Bill.

I like his letter pre-addressing Clinton's surrogates because they will attack.
Smack Down!
Courageous, thoughtful, intuitive and spot-on.  Well said, Mr. Andrew.  Enough of the spin...real problems deserve real solutions. Obama is fully engaged, ready and will be right on 'day one'.

An amazing tribute.  It is reassuring to know that we still have people like this in politics.
"Innuendo is easy, truth is hard"
"Sound bites are easy, solutions are hard"
"Spin is easy, struggling with facts is complicated and hard"
Pretty damning stuff for the Clinton campaign, especially coming from someone like Joe Andrew.
Richardson, Reich and now this.
Let's end this thing now.

Go Obama
Talk about laying the smack down!
The Wright issue is over. Now is the time.  Obama's super delegate backers need to step forward right NOW and create the momentum to make Indiana and NC decisive.
THANK YOU JOE ANDREW!!!!!

MORE delegates.
MORE votes.
MORE states.
PLAYS BY THE RULES.

Obama 08
Former DNC chair and superdelegage Andrews has penetrating insight into the old and new.
He has shifted from the old to the new.
From Hillary to Barack
This bodes well for Indiana and America.

We hope the Clintons don't start attacking him for a principled decision.

And Evan Bayh should be on the short list of V.Pl.'s for Obama as he was for Clinton.

Thank you
I think this endorsement will really make a difference for Obama.  Not only because he is from Indiana or being a former Clinton supporter, but how he basically categorizes Clinton as decisive candidate who hurts the party at this stage in the game.

Lack of real response after the announcement was made by Clinton camp speaks volumes.

Hillary should drop out of the race on Tuesday.  Regardless of what happens.

I am not saying that because I am Obama Supporter but she needs to see right or wrong - this is what best for the party she represents.
So you know, Mr. Andrew ends his letter with gooey lines from a speech he repeated again and again during the (failed) 2000 election, including:

"The difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party is that you are always welcome in the Democratic Party.  Because Democrats don’t care if you are black or white or brown or a nice shade of green, you are welcome in the Democratic Party."

The difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is that they WIN and we LOSE.

Mr. Andrew is a wimp just like his "new" candidate.  Peace-hope-love doesn't win elections and doesn't make our country stronger.  Yes, Democrats should embrace everyone but the DNC leaders must insure the right candidate gets nominated so that our Democratic platform can succeed.  Democrat-Wimpy vs. Democrat-Strong, liberal vs. moderate.  Look to the past; it's easy to see where we've gone wrong.  We need a candidate who can succeed.  We need power so we can make the changes we all want to see happen.

A Texas super for Obama

An AFL-CIO official, John Patrick, endorses the senator.

Release after the jump.

TEXAS SUPERDELEGATE ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA

31 year member of the United Steelworkers, DNC Member John Patrick Backs Obama

CHICAGO, IL -- Today, a Texas superdelegate backed Barack Obama, citing his record of standing up for working families and opposing trade deals that fail to protect American workers. The endorsement by Texas DNC Member John Patrick, who is also a 31 year member of the United Steelworkers (USW) as well as a Vice President of the Texas AFL/CIO, brings the total number of superdelegates to endorse Barack Obama to 249. Senator Obama is 283 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination.

John Patrick said, "Senator Barack Obama has spent a lifetime standing up for American workers, and he will be a crucial voice for us in the White House. Senator Obama chose a career as an organizer on the streets of Chicago, fighting for working families who lost their jobs, specifically those families in neighborhoods devastated by steel plant closings. He has consistently opposed unfair trade deals that fail to offer protection to American workers - like NAFTA. Senator Obama has a real plan to put money back in the pockets of working families by restoring the manufacturing base in America."

One more for Obama!!!!
It's refreshing to see someone like Joe Andrew change his endorsement to Obama and say no to the "old world" Clinton politics.  I think this could be big.  Andrew is scheduled to make an announcement some time today which can only amplify the effect.  So much for the tide turning.
One can only hope these words resonate not only in Indiana, but throughout the land.  This is one of the better descriptions of Senator Obama's abilities.
This man is sooooooo right! Every reason he gives for endorsing Barack Obama is 100% sound. The haters out there will dwell on Reverend Wright, but if Clinton were to become our nominee, the mud slinging by the rabid right wing would be 100 times worse. They hate HRC and former President Clinton and would drag the country back down into four more years of scandal-mongering and forcing us to relive all the nastiness around Bill Clinton's sexual predator reputation, deserving or not. I can't bear the thought!!! Besides, after 8 years of Bush/Cheney, who wants another damn fool president who threatens to OBLITERATE another country and bring upon us the ridicule of the entire free world? I've had enough of that nonsense, haven't you?
Dear Joe Andrew,
Politics is a contact sport.
Get over it!
Do you think YOU or Obambi can unilaterally dictate to the GOP!
GET REAL!!!
Hillary's comment she would "obliterate" Iran is undefensable. Iran filed a formal protest with the United Nations, why isn't this considered front page news?
I felt that G-D was waiting until the very last second to drop the New England Partiots on their arrogant, unrepentant heads, when they continued to win after they were caught cheating.

Has the same kind of humiliating punishment been ordained for Hillary?
BRAVO, WELL SAID!!

No Games, lets be a part of a change we can be proud of
Another politic opportunist! Voters know their motivations. Shame on him!
