Clinton stands by gas tax proposal

After being roundly criticized by newspaper editorials, economists, and energy experts for her gas tax holiday proposal, Clinton is still plowing ahead.

She just told a town meeting in Indiana, "I think we should have a gas tax holiday and pay for it" by taxing oil company "windfall" profits. McCain also supports a gas tax holiday (although wants to pay for it through general revenues), while Obama doesn't.

Clinton added, "You know, Sen. Obama says we shouldn't do it and it's gimmick. And Sen. McCain says we should do it but shouldn't pay for it. I sometimes feel like the Goldilocks of this campaign. Not too much, not too little, just right. And I think we should have a gas tax holiday and pay for it."

She also tried to rebut critics by saying that it's easy for people who can afford to pay to criticize.

Meanwhile, Obama once again stated his opposition to such a holiday while also campaigning in Indiana. "This isn’t a real solution. This is a gimmick," he said. "And this is what Washington does whenever there’s a big problem. They pretend that they’re solving it to try to get though a political season but they don’t really solve it. And unfortunately, after John McCain made the proposal ,I guess Sen. Clinton thought it was gonna poll well, so she said, 'Me too, I’ll do the same thing.’ and so now it’s the McCain-Clinton proposal to suspend the gas tax.

He then said, "You know people are more concerned about looking good for the cameras and for politics than they are at actually solving problems. You remember when George Bush five years ago put up a big sign in front of an aircraft carrier saying ‘Mission accomplished’ in Iraq. I’m sure they thought that was good politics. Except five years later we’re still in this war in Iraq."

Okay, Hillary, how do you propose to get the windfall tax through Congress when all you have been doing for the last two months is trying to tear the Democratic Party in half to satiate your own thirst for prestige equaling that of your loser of a husband?
WOW!!!!

Hillary Clinton changes characters faster than grease lighting!!!

She went from Annie Okley in Pennsylvania a week ago, to gas pumper yesterday, and now she claims she's Goldilocks!!

Not to mention all her "homestates" she claims to have hailed from.
New York, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and now Illinois.

WOW!!!

Hillary Clinton:  So many faces/charades/homestates....so little time!!
Republicans are happily proclaiming that Clinton is now their biggest surrogate.  What a tragedy.
HRC don`t have a clue.

Girl get real!!!
Take Econ 101, this will not help no matter how you try to SPIN it and SPIN you will.

Go Obama '08
First she was Paulette Revere.  Then she was Teddy Roosevelt.  Now, she is Goldilocks!  She needs to get professional help for those multiple personalities.

Obama is 100% correct on the gas tax.  As much as I would love to pay less at the pump, it is an election year gimmick, and it does nothing to solve our energy problems.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
What else is she she going to do, tell the truth about how stupid she is to pander without any sense, or reason? She doe'nt have it in her. Truth that is.
Obama you don't realize one thing buddy:

Clinton is now planning on plan B:

McCain/Clinton 08
Cut payroll taxes for employees and employers if you want to put money in peoples pockets...combined they are 15% of a persons pay...the gas tax thing is pure pandering to the easily conned...and doomed
um, $27 in my pocket for the summer or billions for road work, um, tough decision NOT!

I'll take road work and construction jobs for $27 Alex.
HRC = running as a republican.
HRC = McCain V.P.
HRC =  McCain would be a better president than Obama.
HRC = republican.

Go Obama '08
Of course she stands by this bad idea.  She can never admit that she's wrong and has to "save face" and continue to push this proposal just so she doesn't look bad regardless of whether it's good for the country or not. IT'S ALL ABOUT HER!

OBAMA, 2008!
Hillary's a joke. Not only has she lost the respect of millions of Democratic voters, but she's how lost her credibility. The gas tax "holiday" is nothing more than a gimmick. She's playing the voters of IN and NC for fools.
Yikes, now she's Goldilocks?! She is just telling the Americn people another fairy tale that she is hoping so many will believe.
When is someone going to put a stop to this pandering?
Great response Obama, he's so darn Presidential! calls it like he sees it, and tells it like it is, a truly Principled man.
I hope people understand that this country is in the position that it's in right now because of quick fix gimmicks that don't work but fool the people into believe things are going to be okay or are okay.

People please take note of what going on, let be a part of real change, let be a part of something we can be proud of.
Even if people belive that a "gas tax holiday" would work, shouldn't they mention that just because they propose it doesn't mean it will get passed. Neither one can become president until January 2009. This whole issue is a moot point. Just because McCain and Clinton support it doesn't mean it has any chance of getting passed. This is political pandering at it's worst.
"I sometimes feel like the Goldilocks of this campaign. Not too much, not too little, just right."

--------------------------------------------------

Depending on who tells the story, The 3 Bears either scare Goldilocks away or kill her outright at the end of the story.

Just thought I'd point that out.
Sen. Obama should point out that eliminating the gas tax would only take the price of gas down to what it was a few months ago.  Is that really such a big difference that we should eliminate jobs and stop rebuilding our infrastructure?  Of course the real solution is conservation and alternative fuels.  Also, if Sen. Clinton is so much in favor of this idea, why hasn't she proposed a bill in congress to make it a law?  Is she all talk and no action?
Here's how much the McCain-Bush-Clinton gas holiday would help us. You drive a HUMMER - 23 gallon tank and 18 mpg. If you drive 20 miles/day for a month, you would use 33 gallons of gas. Without the 18 cent tax, you save SIX DOLLARS! I guess Bill Clinton could make an extra trip to McDonald's.

Say you are from Scranton (Or Indiana, or NY depending on where you are campaigning) and you are taking a trip to Disney World with your kids in your HUMMER. For this 2,000 mile round trip you will save TWENTY dollars! This extra $20 (not even enough for a ticket) is hardly going to make the difference in people taking such a trip.
What, are we down to one issue now, a gas tax proposal? Is that all Hillary can run on? Are the Amercian people really that stupid to vote for her because she might save them $25 this summer on gas while our roads and bridges take a hit and gas prices increase.

Yesterday Hillary admitted that her gas tax proposal would not save the average driver much if any money. She then went on to say how it might save the long-haul truckers some money, but not your average auto-owner. Why does she continue to push this issue and lie to the American peole. Why do people buy her BS. It is amazing.

Obama comes along and tells the people the truth about this gas tax proposal but there are still those who won't listen. That is perhaps Obama's biggest problem and biggest hurdle in this election. Mnay of the Amercian people can't and refuse to handle the truth. It seems they want to continue to vote for politicians who are dishonest and who pander at every turn. I'm sure Obama will get the nomination but if for some terrible reason Hillary ended up with the nomination all I have to say is have at it folks. Take your dishonest and pandering nominee. You can have her.
Hillary is an elitist.  She is out of touch.  Yesterday, the driver had to pick her up at her hotel.  She got on the phone immediately, instead of talking with this average Joe.  Then at the pump, she didn't know how to pump gas.  She said it was a long time ago.  SS does it now.
When get go inside tha MiniMart, she could work the coffee machine.  This woman is not like us.  She is a snob. Obama is right - this is all a gimmick about the gas tax.  $.25 per day. Big deal!
Fortunately for Obama, she's given him this issue on a silver platter. He really needs to hammer away at it. As your story rightly points out, he's got economists and editorialists in his corner. The only support she's got on this is from the Republican nominee.
Hey Hillary, My husband has a Crane.  Maybe you could put on a hard hat and drive it around awhile.  Or.. a lot of my rural neigbors trap coons and muskrats.  How about put on a coonskin cap and try a little trapping.  Or...how about a rodeo?  You could mount up and do some barrel racing.  All this is meant as sarcasm but don't be suprised if she really does it.  She'd do ANYTHING.
Only an elitist idiot would support the gas tax freeze. Those taxes employ thousands of road construction worker, companies, and bridge builders.  How long are we going to wait in traffic because the roads are not being repaired?  Sure, I exspect McCain to though thousands of hard working men and women under the bus for what 25-50 dollars, that's all we will save!  This pandering at the expense of other poor peoples lively hood.

Clinton, I knew you were a rat, but now you can chew.
You can't even opperate a coffee machine, and afterall, who can trust a woman that trust Bill Clinton, and oh, by the way Hillary, how's that Peter Paul thing going.

 McCain take an afternoon nap.

Obama is the only candidate worth a dime.
Cinton Clinton Clinton Chameleon

she come and go

she come and goooo-oo-o-o...
Hillary is amazing. We are so proud of her. She rocked on O'Reilly last night, while Keith Olbermann sinks into further irrelevance. Sad, we used to like Keith's show. Now, we can't stomach it.

The Obamarama is OVER. MSNBC didn't get the memo. Their "lord and master" General Electric CEO is a big Obama supporter. MSNBC serves the wishes of their "lord and master" GE CEO. It's outrageous.

It's pretty pathetic when Fox News is actually more fair and balanced in their coverage of Election 08.

**VOTE SMART!!  VOTE PATRIOTIC!!  VOTE HILLARY CLINTON
Maybe someone who can't figure out how to handle a coffee machine, shouldn't be allowed to make decisions like this.
Paulette Revere, Annie Oakley, Rocky, Teddy Roosevelt, now Goldilocks! How do they keep her costumes straight?????
I changed my mind. I like Hillary and John McCain.
Barry Obama - wrong on everything! wrong for America!

Go back to your buddy racist Wright!!!
Why would anyone who understands the Economy, try to say that people will appreciate gas companies not having to pay a tax on the gas they produce.

And then saying we'll just pay for it by taxing them instead when they buy the oil to make the gas?

Who in their right mind thinks that the gas companies will pass some sort of holiday onto the consumer?

You know what? Take a family with two cars, both parents work, take the kids to sports and stuff and chances are they will save a little bit more than the average person, but you know what? That little extra bit of money might put some extra food on the table. Thats what Obama doesnt get, he doesnt have to worry where the money is going to come from to get back and forth to work AND feed your kids. HE JUST DOESNT GET IT!
I'm trying to picture Sylvester Stallone in a blonde, curly wig 1776-era hat and suede jacket with fringe a la Annie Oakley riding from Philly to Indy yelling, "The gas holiday's coming! The gas holiday's coming!"
Cut a tax on consumers, pay for it ith a tax on producers.  Gee, what could go wrong with this equation?  It's not like the producers will pass that new tax on to the consumers or anything...
Hillary, you should send us all a check for $30 and let us decide how to use it.

The media should do their job and expose Hillary for her blatant Magnequench lie.
Magnequench is the story that would sink Hillary permanently, but the media is afraid to tell how she heard the truth and decided to dramatically change the story.

Valparaiso, Indiana has been screaming for the media to cover this story, but the media is afraid of Hillary.
McCain/Clinton---what a ticket.  Do Hillary's supporters ever think about the implications of why people are saying they're so close in policy, ideas and "gimmicks".  Vote Clinton, vote republican; does that really sound like a good idea to anybody?
McCain/Clinton---what a ticket.  Do Hillary's supporters ever think about the implications of why people are saying they're so close in policy, ideas and "gimmicks".  Vote Clinton, vote republican; does that really sound like a good idea to anybody?
Again, JUDGEMENT TO LEAD.

Obama has it and he as enough "testicular fortitude" to tell the people the truth. Not lies for political expediency.

Where as clinton lies to their faces and expects them not to notice. Either that, or she thinks they're really dumb.

Make the right choice.

OBAMA NATION
Hillary, Goldilocks was a fairy tale and so is your gas tax holiday!
This is the perfect illustration of why we need Obama. Both Clinton and McCain are attempting to bribe (and mislead) voters with a handful of dollars while pretending to help them.  Obama's response is to deal with reality. We have a big problem, created by decades of similarly short sighted political bribes and lies.  Let's fix it.  Now.  Obama 08.
Give me a BREAK.   People should soon realize BILLARY is not just a politican with the last name Clinton, but that they really aren't "A candidate OF and FOR the middle class." (Remember they made $101 MILLION, and donated $10 Million to THEIR Foundation that pays Bill!!!!) These are solutions to hoodwink a hard working and frustrated America.
Whay don't we have an FEDERAL PERSONAL INCOME TAX WITHOLDING HOLIDAY through the end of the year; Assess Taxes to the Oil companies and Subsidiaries equal to their combined profits for the last two qTRs, put all the Federal Government Funding in Supplementals and OFF BUDGET), and then watch our Economy right itself...

Super Delegates, please support Barack Obama NOW!!! and lets get on with the election!!!! Put the DESPERADOS BILLARY out of their misery and out of our lives forever.

LET"S HEAR IT FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!

once again the hillair dosn't get it,of coarse this is a person that hasn't bought and paid for gas in some time, like her good buddie McBomb. They would rather pull the pander bear out and hope that we are to dumb to figure out what this will do.9 billion from repair fund for roads and bridges,300,000 construction jobs Gone,(I guess they can get along on there 30 dollar tax saving, that will put food on the table).Big oil will be the big winner when theey raise prices to offset the tax.The experts all say that Obama is correct on this issue that it will not solve anything. We need to start solving problems, not pull washinton tricks.
Don't forget to add Rocky Balboa to the list of aliases that Clinton likes to go by.

What a pathetic desperate attempt to cling to a race she has already lost.
Ah, the Obama idiots are at it again.  Obama says he's against the gas tax holiday because it's a gimmick and because it doesn't fix the problem of our dependency on foreign oil and on gasoline more generally.  However, Hillary and McCain's point is not that this is a "fix" at all.  It is temporary relief during a time when travel is at its peak.  No one has said it is a permanent fix.  Indeed, Hillary (and to a lesser extent Obama) have ideas on how to address permanently our country's dependence on oil.  What the hyponotized Obama fans fail to recognize, however, is that Obama could be out of office before anything is addressed at all.  He is no more principled than either candidate.  Critics, and the morons on this board, say that it'll only save the average person $27 in gasoline.  If you took math, you'd know that that's an average, incluidng all individuals regardless of their ability to pay and regardless of whether or not they even use gas.  For truckers scraping to get by and with a near-24-7 need for gas, it'll be a lot more than $27.  The Obama fans walking to and from class if they're not too hungover to attend are included in that "average," yet those are not the people who need for relief.  It's the 74% of voters in Scranton, Washington, Aliquippa, etc. whose votes Obama didn't get that need the relief.  It's the Keep in context, Obama.  If it weren't for temporary fixes, nothing would ever get accomplished.  He is the one pandering, by suggesting that temporary relief is a gimmick of "old Washington."  Well, if "new" Washington is afraid to employ temporary fixes while still working on permanent fixes, I don't want it.
SHE MUST THINK WE ARE STUPID!
Does ANYONE think that even if the tax holiday were a good idea, it would get through Congress and signed into law by Memorial Day? Yeah, maybe like Memorial Day 2009!!! It's so silly to even suggest it!
Hey, Hill, why don't you rush right back to the Senate to try to get that proposal passed?  Maybe you can even get it through committee before Memorial Day?  Or maybe you'll forget about the whole thing the day after the Indiana Primary?

Pure gimmick politics, universally criticized by anyone who isn't running for President.  Sorry, Hill, my vote is worth more than $27.

GObama!
I'd like to comment on Hillary's statement that it's easy for people who can afford to pay, to criticize her plan.
I for one cannot afford these gas prices.
I have a wife and two kids and we live paycheck to paycheck.  In fact there has been many days lately when I have made it to work on fumes and a prayer, trying to make it to that next paycheck.
So I would love to see gas prices go down.  However, the idea that a gas tax holiday will make any real impact in the price at the pump is a fallacy.
If you do any research into this, you will see that.  It is obvious to me that she is only behind this plan to promote her own candidacy.
It is refreshing to see that others see this as well.

Joe Andrew's comment when switching from Clinton to Obama.
“The gas tax [proposal] is a perfect example of that. It’s also important to point out when someone is pandering and seeking political gain, as opposed to standing up for principle.”

Goldilocks?  Hillary makes me want to vomit.
Another thinly veiled racist comment from the so called progressive democrat. 'Everybody run from the big black Obamabear! Choose me, the blond white girl'

If you remember the story, you'll remember that Goldilocks broke in the bears house, ate their food without asking, broke a chair and proceeded to get in their bed and take a nap. What an a-hole!

The bears shoulda ate her for lunch. I sure hope Obamabear does.
