Bloomberg praises Obama on gas tax

Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 1:07 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From WNBC's Jay DeDapper
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg weighed in on the summer gas tax holiday, arguing "the last thing we need to do is encourage people to drive." He praised Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (first time since congestion pricing died a predictable death in Albany) and Barack Obama for opposing "one of the dumbest ideas" he says he's ever heard.

*** UPDATE *** Per the mayor's office, here's the transcript of the exchange on the gas tax holiday:

REPORTER: Mr. Mayor, earlier this year, Speaker Quinn had proposed a sales tax free week and also a $300 renters rebate.  I was wondering if either of those things are in the budget?

MAYOR: Neither is in the budget.  I think as- its going to be hard enough to make sure we don’t hurt anybody with cutbacks that denigrate- that degrade the quality of living in this City.  At the same time, don’t make the taxpayer’s situation any worse.  I thought it was fascinating- Shelly Silver, I thought very responsibly, came out against this idea of a summer break on gasoline taxes which would help Chavez and Kudafi and people like- other people like that.  I don’t know why anybody would want to do it.  It’s fascinating because his presidential- favorite presidential candidate’s on the other side of it.  So you know, they just split in terms of what they think.  I thought Shelly Silver was- was right and Obama was right. McCain and Clinton were wrong. The last thing we need to do is to encourage people to drive more and to take away the monies we need for infrastructure in this country.  And that’s what reducing taxes does.

REPORTER: Could you elaborate on your opposition to giving drivers a break from the gas tax and how-

MAYOR: It’s about the dumbest thing I’ve heard in an awful long time from an economic point of view. I don’t understand why you think there’s any merit to it whatsoever. We’re trying to discourage people from driving and we’re trying to end our energy dependence. You don’t do that- and incidentally, and we’re trying to have more money to build infrastructure. All three of those things go- fly in the face of giving everybody 30 bucks a year. The 30 bucks is not going to change anybody’s lifestyle. The billions of dollars that we would otherwise have in tax revenues can make a big difference as to what kind of a world we leave our children.

REPORTER: And what would you say to Joe Bruno, who’s advocating for it?

Mayor: I have no idea. I haven’t talked to Joe Bruno about it. You’d have to say something to Joe Bruno. I- that’s- I just do not think that it is intelligent tax policy and it’s not a good energy policy. It is something that, you know, sounds good but I thought in this case Obama had it right.

Whatever.  Seriously.  Report on the implications of a gas tax holiday, including whose the real beneficiary.  I just don't understand why the president isn't behind this idea too.  More money for big oil right?  Makes sense for corporate Clinton and McCain.
I praise Obama in his sanctuary.
Perhaps there will be a Bloomberg in an Obama White House ? He seems to be a big fan.
Who cares, Hillary is gonna wipe the table with him in the remaining contests. Then John McCain will wipe the table with her in the GE.
Thank you Mayor, Bloomberg!!

Wake up blue-collar workers and see who really has your best interest at heart! And it ISN'T HRC or John McCain!!

Hold tough, Obama!! Your supporters are proud of you for standing up for what is RIGHT, not just politically POPULAR!!! You continue to show why you are the ONLY candidate in this race who is standing up for ME and my concerns. Thank you from a very appreciative heart.

Bloomburg is  mayor of a city with transportation alternatives. Most of the citizens of the great USA have NO transportation alternatives.

Bloomburg should shut his whiny mouth. New York is NO longer the center of the universe.

Bloomburg is a phony who poses for photo ops in a subway, pretending that's how he get to work in the morning, and it's really a farce, he gets off the subway and gets into his limo which takes him to the office.

Bloomburg's a fraud, just like Obama.

Obama is unelectable.

**VOTE SMART!  VOTE PATRIOTIC!  VOTE HILLARY CLINTON!
What! The Gas Tax isn't dumb! It's as effective idea as the Bush/Congress "Are approval Rating is so Low we will pay you to like us"-bill! Can't you feel the Economy recovering as everyone gets 600 bucks! It is going to make everything OK!
That's it .....how can people allow themselves to be lied to and fooled by Hellary .... Mangequench....has to be what ends any perceived credibility that anyone had in her.  Wake up!
Clinton is so washed up.  If she's nominated as the Dem candidate, and somehow steals the GE I'm moving to Canada, because she will drive this country into the depths of hell.
Bloomberg for vice president.

Mr. Bloomberg, please convince the media to expose Hillary's blatant Magnequench lie.
This man understands "Economy"
I agree. McCain-Clinton proposal looks down on the the sensibilities of the american voters.
Obama is having an all around good news day, today. Just as the old proverb states, it is always darkest before the dawn.
Hillary is not running for voters... she's running for herself.

Her and Obama have IDENTICLE policy plans.

The only argument is that she is a better canadidate against McCain but Poll after Poll says thats NOT the case.

This doesn't even discount the fact that the only way she can win is by overriding the pledged delegate count which is tantamount to political suicide in the GE.
Yes, we are talking about the issues.
Thank you MSNBC, now tell how Clinton realizes she made a mistake and how AGAIN, she does not want to admit she is on the wrong side of this argument.

First NAFTA putting people out of work and now this tax...come on Hillary!
Any economics major could figure this out.  Some politicians cannot deal in finite resources. They can print money forever.  They can spend their spouses money to no end.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Someone with some REAL since.

Thanks, Mike B.

OBAMA NATION.
Yes it is the "DUMBEST IDEA" to come across.
HRC & McCain knows nothing, nothing, nothing.

Go Obama '08
You do understand that the gas tax is regressive?  i.e. it affects those with the lowest incomes.  For Bloomberg (who is Mayor of NYC) it one thing to oppose a cut due to the congestion, but for working people who do not live in cities or near their place of work (because cheaper housing is usually further from places of employment), gas is their biggest expense.

BTW Does BO actually have a solution that will implemented in the next 10 years?
Bloomberg does not worry about gas tax relief --he is a billionare---Exxon-Mobile earned 11 billion dollars in the first quarter.Obama worries that we might get $30 for food or gas.How compassionate of him.Guess we know where he sits ---on the side of big oil that has given him millions in campaign donations.Gee I did not know he cared so much.
How many wisenheimer economists have agreed with Senator Obama on his denouncing, and rejecting of the Clinton/McCain stupidity bandwagon gas tax holiday?

You go Barack!
BREAKING NEWS!!! McCain's campaign has been linked to Hezbollah:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/1/122640/7440/423/507062
I have this sinking fear that the Rev. Wright contraversy may have finally fatally wounded Obama. A new Gallup and Ramussen tracking polls out today has Clinton and McCain way ahead of Obama now.

The media has way too much influence. They cant let the story go. And people are too easily manipulated in this country. So congradulations, everyone now has a permission slip to vote against Obama. Obama finally has been drowned by the MSM's addiction to magnifiying the Rev Wright issue, beating it to death and squeezing as much blood out of it as they possibly can. No politician can substain this much pressure over a span of 2 months. After the constant onslaught of negative kitchen sink attacks, media coverage pile-on, Pennsylvania loss, ambushed in the ABC debate, Bitter comments, and Wright's media tour, I think the bottom is about to fall out.

He is being personally and politically destroyed. The same man that brought him to God, married him, and baptized his children, destroyed his campaign for President of the United states.
hmmmm....trying to think of another time that McCain and Clinton were on the same side of an issue that is face-value-popular in politics...hmmm.....2002....vote....to go to war....

and, again, the level head in the group, Obama, is pointing out why this is a bad idea and opposing it.

do we really want to keep taking our chances with Politicians who are trying to score "hot topic"-cheap-daily-news-points, while ignoring long term effects?

lets wake up people....

Obama/Bloomberg'08
McCain and Clinton sure do seem to agree a lot...

Between bombing Iran and giving out $30 of "hush money" to stop Americans from complaining about a summer of over-priced gas, I'm not sure Clinton's even in the right party any more...
I hope Obama realizes how he can exploit the utter stupidy of economics and the envirorment on these two knotheads.  How can they continue to push something that is insane?  What a great opportunity to educate America on how we can make oil prices go down if we quit using so much. Make the oil companies choke on their oil, not discount it for them.
In the words of James Brown "I feel good." First, I loved reading Mr. Andrew's reasons for supporting Obama, he articulated exactly what I have been thinking. Then Bloomberg comes out and backs Obama on the gas tax gimmick. I love to hear the voice of reason returning to American public life.
What is insidious about the dumbness of the idea is the dumbness it assumes in the audience.  Here's hoping the American people and superdelegates don't live down to the Clintons' expectations
Right on, Mr. Mayor. I haven't always been so sure about him, but I praise his quickness here in calling it like it is, a flat-out dumb idea. It's political pandering that will ultimately hurt more than it will help, and hopefully the people are getting the right information and paying enough attention to think beyond, "No gas tax? Sure!"
Anyone not pandering for a high-paying civil service job come January seems to hate this idea. That's probably because it actually IS one of the dumbest ideas ever conceived.
Clinton/McCain for cutting salaries of road workers and derpiving the states of critical infastructure projects...all for $20 bucks of gas. Way to go! When it comes to REAL policy/photo ops instead of attacking Obama...she loses. Opps, I think that's what you need to become president right? But then again we were given Bush......

All those years in Washington surely gave her so much experience....
In the words of Comic Book Guy, "Worst idea ever".  The whole 'gas tax holiday' idea is the most blatant bit of pandering in this whole election season.  How long ago was gas .18 a gallon cheaper, and how quickly would that be swallowed up again?  Driving less by making smarter travel decisions and some sacrifice brings us together as a nation.  McCain had the hubris to frame it as letting people go on vacation with enough money 'to buy your kid something'.  Does anyone have the 'testicular fortitude' to admit its tough, probably going to get tougher, and sure to become disastrous if we don't wise up and start working and sacrificing?  Its time that a leader asked us all to work together, and asked from those to whom much has been given to give something back.  For McCain to say the 'holiday' is so people can go on vacation with some extra spending money is an insult to the hard-working Americans who have a lot more to worry about every day besides a souvenir Mousketeer hat.  Its a cheap stunt, and an insult to anyone with 1/2 a brain.
YES!!! The VP has spoken..

If you have noticed my posting all end with "Obama/Bloomerg" ;)

Obama/Bloomberg 2008
Yeah, the elite of this country like Bloomberg and Obama don't see the need to relieve the common people of an of their taxes.
Once again I submit...

If Senator McCain or Senator Clinton believe in the Gas Tax Holiday *SO MUCH* then they should write the legislation!

Go ahead!

I dare you!

But, no, they'd rather stump on the idea and earn political points than take action.

I thought you were supposed to be solutions, not speeches?

(Yes, and Dub was a uniter, not a divider!)
Al Gore should come in on this one.  Maybe Obama will say  "Al, take this and hit it out of the park for me. I really overestimated these two."
The gas tax holiday is  great political rhetoric, a feel good thingy that does nothing. The average American would save a whopping $25 according to published reports.
Letter to MSNBC (This is also being forwarded to anyone who places an ad on your site as well)

Enough is Enough!

I'm now forced to watch CNN in the mornings and at night because they aren't driveling Wright's name every three seconds. We had the deadliest month in Iraq, over 80,000 jobs lost last month, inflation, etc., not counting Hillary's pastor molests a seven year old girl and you would rather waist our time with race baiting rather then worried about our kids? Get over yourselves.

Being I work for a media based company with over five thousand domain names, I understand ratings, I have to do reports on them... I will be forwarding this email to every friend and Obama group I can find. So, pay attention to your ratings as my intent is now a kitchen sink strategy.

Enough is Enough
Blue Collar Workers of America,
Please read the ABC article about the Clintons' and Mangequech. Please read about what passing this 'gas tax holiday' will really do to your pocketbooks. Do your research!! Please!! This is too important!!

And by the way...........isn't HRC's NOT being able to work a coffee machine or knowing how to pump gas her 'bowling' moment??? Is that going to be played over and over again by the MSM?? Isn't SHE just a little bit out of touch??? Come on MSNBC. Turn about is fair play. Who looks like the elitist now??
T says:

-------------

This has got to be the writings of an Obama-ite. Talk about not knowing how the economy works.
The gas tax "holiday" is bad.

Question everyone: when you go on vacation what generally happens when you get back?

Answer: You have that much more work to catch up on!

This is no different.  The money lost by the government will have to come back somehow and do you know how it will come back? Out of your wallet, that's how.

Aside from the new argument above, it is also bad because:
*  It gives the oil companies another opportunity to raise prices.
*  The savings to the average Joe, if seen at all, is minimal, especially considering the cost.
*  It takes money away from road improvements.
*  It won't pass the House and Senate regardless and if it does it will be too late anyway.
*  It doesn't address the real issues like diminishing world oil supplies and OPEC's unwillingness to increase production.
*  It doesn't address windfall profits.
*  It doesn't hold oil companies accountable.
*  It eliminates some 200,000 – 300,000 highway jobs.
*  It doesn’t stimulate investment in alternative fuels.
*  It is a band-aid solution to an illness that requires major surgery.
*  It is pandering and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.
And the list goes on and on....

In fact, is there anything GOOD about the gas tax holiday?  The answer is no.
We need to find other sources of energy to rely on, not band-aid fixes.

This should send a clear message to Republicans that there is something seriously wrong with your party right now.  That Junior Senator Clinton supports it shows that she truly doesn’t care about us and is far more Republican than Democrat.
Let them eat cake!!
RE:Who cares, Hillary is gonna wipe the table with him in the remaining contests. Then John McCain will wipe the table with her in the GE.

Yes, who cares about who really is the smartest and most honest candidate. It's all about how much we can scare you with Rev. Wright....

This is an important policy discussion, and only one of the three candidates has it correct... Obama.  This is more illuminating to voters than what Rev. Wright is saying.  But it's not as sexy or as divisive.

Open your eyes folks, Obama is smart, he is as patriotic as the rest of us, he has strong judgement and truly wants what's best for this country.

Okay, back to the issues. On taxes, Hillary is for tax reductions, Obama is against.
Hillary is offering relief for "regular" people at the pump. The rich in this country could care less about the cost of gas...I however am growing tired of coughing up $55-60 when I fill up. Hillary wants to bring that down with the tax holiday and I say...please we need some relief.
OBAMA IS SINKING IN THE GALLUP POLL!

HILLARY LEADS OBAMA BY 4 POINTS!

OBAMA HAD A 10 POINTS LEAD JUST 1 WEEK  AGO!!!!

OBAMA DROPPED 14 POINTS IN 1 WEEK !!!!

THIS IS VERY SIGNIFICANT!!!!

ALSO INSIDE ADVANTAGE HAS HILLARY LEADING OBAMA BY 2PTS IN NC.

GO HILLARY!!!!

GO NASCAR!!!!
This is not a game and Hillary is playing with the American people's lives. This country needs a change to try and fix the economy so we won't be like a third world country because that's where we are headed.  Wake up American! It's not about putting a black or a woman in the WH but about us as Americans surviving this recession.
I was listening to the Diane Rheem show this
morning on NPR. The topic was the Gas Tax
proposal. Both of her guest agreed with Obama
and Diane commented that her producers could not
find anyone credible to come argue the Clinton/
McCain side. I found that very interesting
What America really needs at this time is to put some $ into itself! Stupid temporary tax cuts sound as cheesy as the kid from my high school running for class president and saying he was going to install more soda machines... LOL
I want substance, and truth... I want Obama for our president. Seems very clear to me
Dear Pat H.,
Why do you get posted all the time with your confusing, sarcastic remarks?  Substance please.
