Michelle defends, re-introduces husband

Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 6:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- Michelle Obama spoke to the heart of the conservative attack against her husband Wednesday morning, telling a room full of Obama supporters that it was incumbent on them to get the true picture of who her husband was out to undecided voters before Tuesday's primary.

"There are a lot of people who don't know anything about us,” she said. “Anything other than the caricatures that have been painted of us in the media. And that is the nature of the process.”

She claimed that if she or her husband had just had 15 or 30 minutes to individually meet with each voter, the nominating process would have ended long ago but building that degree of familiarity with the electorate was impossible.

"And the game counts on that," she said. "It counts on the fact that there's no way that all these people are really going to know who Barack Obama is, so let me paint a different picture really quickly, which hopefully will stick and will distract people from what they're really asking for anyway."

Her comments reflected on the controversies that have embroiled her husband both recently -- Rev. Wright and William Ayres -- but also to false rumors circulating about him, including photos that try to prove he doesn't put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance and e-mails claiming he's a Muslim.

Conservatives have latched onto these false rumors as well as the Wright controversy to argue that Obama is not patriotic, tarnishing his image as a post-partisan figure untainted by the ideological struggles between liberals and conservatives in the baby boom generation.

Or, as Sen. John McCain had said in an interview with Chris Matthews on Hardball, he couldn't comment on whether Obama was an elitist or not, because he just didn't know Obama that well.

Mrs. Obama embraced the argument that her husband was unknown, arguing that it established him as an "underdog."

"But anybody who's talking about change is an underdog because there's a whole system and a history that says, 'Uh-uh, we're not ready for that; We don't need that, that change is scary; you should wonder who his pastor is,'" she joked. "You know there's always something."

Using the recent attacks on Obama as an x-factor in American politics as a rallying cry for the campaign's supporters, she called the supporters in attendance the campaign's "validators." She urged them to "get on the phone," "have some arguments," heart to hearts," in order to allay the doubts voters may have about Obama.

"You know 20 other people in your lives who are afraid, who don't really understand Barack," Mrs. Obama said. "They are confused on an issue; they believe something that's not true. They think he's a Muslim; they think he's a 'this'; they think he's all the names that have come up and have stuck or not stuck. You know you've talked to these people. I would love to talk to them, but I can't.”

"So this is the difficult thing. This is why it's always an uphill battle," she continued. "Folks in this country believe that, who they think they know, is safer than who they're not quite sure that they know."

She also joked about how she and her husband were labeled as elitist, while she worried about spending too much at Target, and after they had just paid off their student loans only a few years ago. She claimed that because they were so recently in debt, they were closer to the lives of the Americans they wished to represent and had a set of values that they use to practice in their politics -- unlike their political opponents.

"Our values transcend it all,” she said. “And its not that other candidates have values; it’s just how they are translated in their politics. Sometimes folks who have been in this for a while, they just don't know how to be anything than what the process has been. That's why sometimes you need new blood just to shake it up a bit."

From our mouths, as well as yours Michelle, to G-D's ear.
Obama himself, doesn't know who he is, so how can they show us? I know, make a grand speech, and all will be forgiven!
Michelle Obama: "let me paint a different picture really quickly, which hopefully will stick and will DISTRACT people from what they're really asking for anyway."

Do not worry Michelle, the truth about you and husband is coming out and more will come out.

Both you and he are being vetted fully now that you are the front runner.

You can spin and spin but the truth will come out.

will stick and will distract people from what they're really asking for anyway."

I thought Obama didn't want distractions getting in the way.

Now his wife want to distract people?
If America doesn't realize the potential for greatness of this potential first couple and vote accordingly, it's pretty sad for our country.
Michelle is great.  Every man should have a wife like her.
Michelle Obama urged the faithful to call up people and tell them what Obama is all about.  But she did not say what Obama is offically all about?

Not at all, except to poke fun at the idea the pair of them are elitist.  The evidence they are not elitist?  She shops at target and it has taken
them forever to pay off their affirmative action spots in elite liberal colleges.  Didn't they make more than $4 million last year.  Poor babies, they're just plain folks.

Michell should talk more.  A lot more.
Mrs Obama will make an eloquent first lady not only for the United States of America but for all the world to see.  She is so well spoken, knowledgable, even tempered like her husband but down to earth at the same time.  I get excited just thinking about this couple in the White House.  I am an x-republican voting and supporting Senator Obama.
Well, If Obama would do real interviews instead of "Oprah" and "Ellen", then maybe people would know him better. What else has he got to hide?
MO - [that it was incumbent on them to get the true picture of who her husband was out to undecided voters before Tuesday's primary]

We do. Barack Obama is an extreme left wing liberal elitist. We've known that for quite a while now.
We need to boycott MSNBC's morning programs and this blog.  Chris Todd has had the most bias reporting I have seen since the ABC debacle.  What's the difference between ABC/Disney and MSNBC.  I mean all day, every day, they bash him from Joe Scarboro, Meeka's show, Tamara's show etc.  It is just so unfair to Obama!   I thought that in journalism you had to check your facts, and sources and then double check your facts and sources.  Now MSNBC news primarily consists of opinions not facts.  In fact, when they reported some info about the polygamist story--I could not believe their report because I know how bias and slanted their news has been this year.  I had to turn to a competitive news organization to get the truth.
We still don't know why Michelle Obama has such a big chip on her shoulder, especially for a rich babe who went to fine universities and currently has a very lucrative job.   What is the source of her unrest, other than the stuff that Uncle Wright lectures?
Obama would defend his preacher before he defended this country. We need a real patriot in office, and it isn't Obama.
I agree with Michelle so many people are more comfortable in the old. Its like learning something new on the job in order to get a better salary but because you've done it one way your sticking with it. And guess who they get rid of in sneakest ways, the one that's been on the job the longest because they wont look to a better way of doing things.  That is because there is a need for progress.  Its like a typewriter vs MicrosoftWord.  Not very many of typewriters still in use.  Change = Progress

Wake up America and look for progress and a new way of getting what we need.

Obama 08
Fact is Michelle is one of Obama's liablities too.

She has a chip the size of Texas on her shoulder.

The Obamas are arrogant, snooty, elitist.  They acquired it,  they weren't born to it.

The rest of the world knows who Obama is:

AMAZING!

BREAKING NEWS!!!!

The Huffington Post is reporting that Clinton segrogate Sidney Blumenthal uses former right-wing foes to attack Sen. Obama on the behave of Sen. Clinton. This is huge and I hope the MSM, MSNBC, & CNN reports this!

Here's the link.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-dreier/sidney-blumenthal-uses-fo_b_99695.html

This is just a long list of just how dirty Hilary Clinton has become.
When will MSM,MSNBC start talking about the lawsuit by Peter Paul's fraud case against the Clintons filed in California. This has the protential to bring her down and no one is discussing it! This is being talked about on radio shows like Ed Shultz and Randi Rhodes. People are pleading that MSM talk about this potentially damaging story regarding The Clintons. Come on Chuck, tell your boss Mr. Russert to stop avoiding this story and start talking about it!

Well said Mrs. Obama. You are going to make a wonderful First Lady!

Obama '08/'12
If that is Mickey Cantor, First Read, do your duty.  I want to know what he means by what he has just said: "Indiana, it doesn't matter.  Those people are S**t."

did anybody ask Michele Obama if Rev. Wright's anti-American rhetoric  resulted in her commenting that this is the first time she feels good about America?
Michelle is the best.
I think she will make a fine First Lady.

Big time Clinton Staffer, Mickey Kantor, saying (about the people in Indiana), "and those people are shit!" as they all laugh about it.

I can appreciate Michelle's views about her husband, but it is not a matter of knowing her husband from a snippet of time with him, it is about experience. We can see that he is a competent and nice guy, but about 50% of voting democrats, don't think he is the one. We like Hillary and we see her as the superior candidate. Nothing changes this for me. Oh--and I am one of those people that has worked hard to see the truth about these candidates. I am not being led around by media monkeys. Just want you to know that Michelle.
Go Michelle!  The media are scum.  Rev Wright is not running for president.  Media repeat after me, Rev Wright is not running for president.  Obama is ahead in pledged delegate, popular votes, and in states won.  Super delegates endorse now or you will put the democratic party in jeopardy for years to come.  My husband and I are yellow dog democrats who support Obama and if this election is stolen from him we are out of the democratic pary and there are millions like us who will walk away from the democratic party.  I am a 55 year old white woman.  There are a million young people and there are a million AAs who will stay hom and not vote for Hillary if she was to steal the election.
I noticed that Michelle Obama kept saying that people don't know who Barack Obama is, and she mentions a few things he is not (i.e. Muslim). However, she never does tell us who he is. If we had 15 minutes with them? Didn't she have 15 minutes at this event to fill us in on what they stand for other than "change?" How could be comfortable with them if we don't know who they are? They are obviously hiding who they are because they don't think we will like it.

TO ALL THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS - SPECIALLY INDIANA & NO. CAROLINA SUPPORTERS.

Since the media is refusing to reveal/report the Paul vs Clinton fraud case in court right now, we need to create our own movement and flood every blog on CNN and every blogging website on the World Wide Web with information from the case regardless of what the topic is. For those that don't know - Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!!

OBAMANACS UNITE!!! LET'S DO THIS!!

I read an article about Michelle Obama's roommate at college and how the roommate's mother wanted her daughter moved because Michelle was black.  I'm sure with this kind of behavior that Michelle felt like a visitor and not a true part of the group at her university.  The comments being made about her thesis are cruel and demonstrate a lack of empathy for other's struggle's.  I have determined that the majority of newscaster's are republican because they say very mean things about her.  Maybe it's just that they want to tear down Barack Obama.  She is most impressive to me, articulate, warm and smart.
why do michelle obama have to re-introduce her husband.
maybe she don't know him either and didn't know the company he was keeping look at all the other politician
that got caught doing bad things and there wife where kept
in the dark.
You go girl. I am sure that those of us who support Barack Obama would agree that if you listen carefully to him and check out his web site to get to know his ideas and dreams for America how could you not like him. He's not an elitist and today Bill Clinton called Obama supporters elitist-I take offense to that. I have discussed this campaign with many people and I find most of them open to the idea of listening to Barack's ideas if the media would only get off the Rev. Wright story. I am for Obama for the right reasons-not the Wright reasons.

Listen up and do the right thing.Vote Obama in November.
This is the type of coverage Barack's campaign needs. Put your stick and stones away and open your ears. Barack has said, as have many leaders in my life, the most important aspect of communication is listening; I can see that both of the Obama's subscribe to this simple rule.

Ethics back in politics; I never thought I'd see the day in my lifetime. HOPE springs eternal
Ms Michelle,
Your husband's problems are not of anyone elses doing.
Please hold up the mirror for him.  Every candidate has BS written about them.  What really bothers me is the more we learn about him, the more his judgment doesn't measure up to his myth.
Got tired of the crap being recycled on MSNBC. Changed the channel to PBS Detroit and watched the remainder of McNeil. Wow! I didn't know there was a US airstrike in Somolia today - killed 10. I guess Rev. Wright wasn't in Somolia so the MSM missed that one. Also, did you know US military deaths in Afghanistan are approaching 500? I guess there's no crazy pastor in that story either.
Obama is a man that seems very comfortable in the company of terrorists, extremists, crooks, and separatists.
I like this lady.
She is a classy lady and will make an excellent First Lady come next January!

And the majority of the attacks that are being leveled at Senator Obama have originated from the Clinton Campaign:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-dreier/sidney-blumenthal-uses-fo_b_99695.html
There is voter suppression going on in NC.  People in African American zip codes are receiving robocalls from a nonprofit that is linked to the Clinton campaign, which give confusing/incorrect information about voter registration.  The Clinton campaign has also been push polling.  One of the people who was push polled taped the call and it is available in several places online.

Meanwhile, regardless of these shady activities, your network continues to talk about Reverend Wright, even though Obama denounced him fully and completely two days ago.  We do not care about Reverend Wright.  Do your freaking jobs and report the news instead of continuing this stupidity.

I will no longer be watching your network until you start reporting on something of substance again.

The real question is, Barack and Michelle, have the last 8 years been good for you?
God bless you Michelle Obama for telling it like it is!  How ridiculous these calls of elite -- Senator Obama worked through college and law school doing construction.  Senator Obama and his wife just finished paying off their student loans.

Senator Obama knows how to pump gas and get coffee at a convenience store.  He has not spent the last 24 years in the bubble like Senator Clinton has.  The number of years Senator McCain has been in that bubble are even more than 24.

And somebody wants to call Senator Obama elite?
When you hear nonsense like this, if you haven't already closed your ears because another candidate warned you that Senator Obama is inspirational, remember why this nonsense is spread.

It is spread so that the establishment can keep control.  You know all of those elites that lobby Washington, write much of the legislation and etc.?  That "elite" establishment wants to keep control and that "elite" establishment knows that they cannot control Senator Obama.

Senator Obama does not take their money.  He takes ours.  Senator Obama is accountable only to us, the People -- none of the other two candidates can make this claim.
It is quite amazing that both Senator Clinton and Senator McCain are attempting to characterize Senator Obama as elitist.  What common touch do either think they have?  Senator Clinton by her own admission hasn't pumped her own gas in a very long time.  Yesterday's show was just that.  Senator McCain travels on his wife's private plane whose cost is about $7,500 per hour - not the $2,000 per hour included in the New York Times article. I would be willing to bet that the Obamas know how to pump gas (and do pump their own gas) and certainly don't have a family private plane to fly around on. Why don't you see stories in the media discussing the label "elite"?  i.e. why don't the media even attempt to challenge how patently absurb it is for Clinton and McCain to call anyone else elitist?  I don't have a particular favorite in the race - I just wish we could have an honest debate for once.
Quit pandering to Obama supporters. This was a FULL PAGE BLOG on what the candiates wife says. Silly.
WOW!!  He's in trouble now.  Michelle the whiner, Michelle with the chip the size of Alaska on her shoulder, Michelle the I was never proud of my country until Obama won, Michelle the black people better wake up Michelle.  WOW!!! Michelle is one of Obama's libalities!!!!

Its not that we don't know him it's that what we do know is negative. All Iv'e heard that is "Positive" is "Change" But then no definition on what "Change" is.
You Go Girl!
We can count on Obama to take a principled stance on the issues. It is who he is. The issues in this election are too important for anything but a principled stance.
