Delegate fight: Who has the Mo?

Posted: Friday, May 02, 2008 9:25 AM by Domenico Montanaro

USA Today looks at the superdelegate success Obama has had this week, despite his political troubles. The question on everyone’s mind: Can he keep it up if he loses both Indiana and North Carolina on Tuesday?

The New York Times suggests that Clinton’s chances -- despite the momentum she's showing in polls and the confidence the campaign is exuding -- are very remote. "By and large, the group that matters most at this point -- the uncommitted superdelegates, who are likely to hold the balance of power -- still seem to view their decision the way the Obama campaign would like them to see it. They suggest that they are more sympathetic to the argument that they should follow the will of the voters as expressed by the delegates amassed by the candidates when the primary season is done rather than following Mrs. Clinton’s admonitions to select the candidate they think would best be able to defeat Senator John McCain and the Republicans in November.”

“‘It’s about the numbers, and the numbers are the numbers,’ said Chris Redfern, the chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party and an uncommitted superdelegate. ‘It’s not about hand-wringing. And Senator Obama has the lead.’”

That said, “Clinton has an unmistakable bounce in her step these days -- a sense of energy and optimism that somehow belies the daunting challenge she faces in wresting the Democratic presidential nomination from Barack Obama,” the AP’s Fouhy writes. More: “All of which has given her advisers at least a glimmer of hope that, after a long period of being thought a sure loser, Clinton has regained enough momentum to persuade uncommitted superdelegates to give her candidacy another look. While it may still be a long shot, advisers believe she is in a stronger position to make that argument now than she has been for much of the primary season.”

The Indy Star looks at the polarization that's developed inside the Democratic Party between Clinton’s and Obama’s supporters.

Will it be harder for Obama as the Dem nominee to win over blue-collar, culturally conservative Dems? Or for Clinton to motivate blacks? McClatchy finds quite a few black Democrats who plan to stay home if Obama is denied the nomination. “‘It would hurt me not to vote,’ said Charles Clark, an Indianapolis retiree. He's thinking about leaving the presidential box on his ballot blank this fall if Hillary Clinton is the Democrats' nominee. ‘There was a heck of a push made so blacks could vote. I know that,’ he said. ‘But it would also be very unfair if they pushed Barack Obama to the side.’”

“Michelle Moore, an Indianapolis housewife, is less gentle: ‘Hillary Clinton would not even still be in the race if Obama was a white man,’ she said.”

In his latest National Journal column, NBC political analyst Charlie Cook writes, “Just days ago, it seemed that the only way that Barack Obama could fail to clinch his party’s nod would be to leave his wife and move in with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. That is, until Wright took to the lectern at the National Press Club to launch what amounted to a kamikaze attack on Obama’s candidacy, sputtering nonsense that must have left the senator’s campaign operatives wondering whether they had accidentally tuned their TVs to the political horror channel.”

More: “But to downscale, high-school-educated, white Democrats who make less than $50,000 a year and are more likely to spend money at Wal-Mart than Starbucks, much about Obama seems a bit odd. And Wright’s diatribe seems to be reinforcing stereotypes with these voters, presenting Obama with his gravest crisis yet as a candidate.”

And, his conclusion: “The math is still the math, but a race that seemed to be over may not be over. What happens in Indiana and North Carolina on Tuesday could tell us a lot about how quintessentially middle-class states now view Obama.”

The superdelegates are smart... Both Clinton or Obama will trounce McCain in the upcoming election.  The only risk they face is tearing the party apart if Obama wins the most delegates, but has the nomination taken away from him based on a few points in a poll that is taken 6 months before election day.  A 1968-like scene in Denver would be devestating, and could affect up and down ballot races very negatively.
Drip, drip, drip.

Joe Andrew anyone?

Figures lie and liars figure.

Bob, Chicago
America can not afford to continue on the low road.

Could this be the year that the high road becomes the choice of preference in American politics? The magnitude of the issues demands no less.
Bill Clinton keeps putting down the 14 caucus states.

These states chose to save millions in taxpayer dollars and hold caucuses.  Bill and Hillary are saying these 14 states do not matter.

Here is a list of states the Clintons have upset:
Iowa, Nevada, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington, Maine, Hawaii, Texas, and Wyoming.

All of these states, Bill Clinton has said will vote Republican.

That's right, Bill Clinton has said the Democrats should give up on Colorado (site of the Democratic National Convention)?

The Clintons recent comments have caused major problems for Democrats from these states.

Remember, the Democrats lost control of the House, Senate, and Governorship while the Clintons were in the white house.
If momentum is defined as the ability to keep changing your identity and your message to fit your audience the Senator Clinton certainly has it.

She's Rocky, "Paulette" Revere, Teddy Roosevelt, Goldilocks, Annie Oakley, Chicago Cubs fan, New York Yankees fan...Mrs. Ed?

She's trying so hard to be "one of us" in the hopes that you'll forget the millions her family's raking in, Magnaquench, NAFTA, CAFTA, Whitewater, her work for WalMart...

IT'S A FACADE!

If she is the nominee please remember she will be the nominee who the majority of those polled believe is dishonest.

Maybe her ever-changing identity is the greatest symptom of that dishonesty.
“Michelle Moore, an Indianapolis housewife, is less gentle: ‘Hillary Clinton would not even still be in the race if Obama was a white man,’ she said.”

What if he was a black woman?  Or what if he was a Chinese vegetarian?  Hmmmmm..... If he was a White man he would be a guy running for president with less than one term in the Senate with absolutely no legislation to his credit.... Like John Edwards a great guy but not ready for the office.

One thing for sure, if he was white he would still have 90% of the black vote because race doesn't matter.
“‘It’s about the numbers, and the numbers are the numbers,’ said Chris Redfern, the chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party and an uncommitted superdelegate. ‘It’s not about hand-wringing. And Senator Obama has the lead.’”

Interesting statement in lieu of the fact that the will of this particular super delegate's constituency in Ohio was/is for Hillary Clinton to be the nominee.
If the super delegates go along with the will of the people, shouldn't HE be supporting Hillary since she won the Ohio primary?
Or, do "the rules' only apply when the benefit Obama?
This is exactly the kind of hypcrissy Hillary's camapaign has faced all throughout this primary cycle.
If I were her, and I didn't get the nomination, and Obama's people and/or the Democratic party came looking for an endorsement....I would tell them to SHOVE IT!
If Hillary Clinton steals the nomination from the rightful winner, we should encourage Obama to run as an independent.  I would rather have McCain as president, if the most corrupt politician in America is the Democratic nominee.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Congrats, Hillary, on turning the House over to the G.O.P. in 1994.  They couldn't have done it without you!
Hillary has lost.  Sure she 'could' win as a long-shot.  But that requires a vicious mud-fight from all sides.  And if so, she would never hold the respect of the average American--not with the baggage she already has.

Hillary is looking more like Huckabee but with much more to loose for the Democratic party.
In the wake of 5 years since mission accomplished the only anchors on MSNBC who gave this real coverage were Keith and Matthews.
I think Joe S and David Gregory have become Clinton talking heads. They continually talk about a dead subject that has nothing to do with How Obama will govern.
WHY? Because they have nothing else to report. They have become just like FOX and CNN. Lets report a scandal all day long eventhough its really nothing.
Hillary cant even work a coffee machine or a gas pump and that got NO COVERAGE. One of her backers baited The Rev to Implode on TV and that got no coverage.
If Obama had done any one of those things it would be on the news 24 - 7.
Almost everyone is now using Clinton talking points.

Where is the balance???
Now Clinton is Mrs Tough Girl?? Lets be real. She was the front runner from day one. She is now losing and everyone has now shifted to piling on Obama.
Have we all forgotten that she was the favorite and that she is losing??

And for all the "so called" Christians and Catholics who are sitting in judgement of Obama because he gave his Former Pastor a chance to redeem himself, maybe you all need to take a look at yourselves before you judge Obama for doing the Right thing as a good man and an honest person.
These same people will fogive Bill Clinton for cheating on his wife, lying about it, losing both houses of Congress and getting IMPEACHED but sit and judge Obama for trying to be a good person.

This is why this country is such a disaster. Nobody takes the time to see what people are really about. They just listen to sound bites and rumor.
Its a sad day in The USA when over 4000 US soldiers have died for nothing, many of them are trying to committ suicide, the gov is not giving them proper care, there are food shortages world wide and the top story for days has been The Rev Wright.
DISGUSTING
Hillary doesn't even know how to use a coffee machine.
Hillary hasn't shopped at Walmart or Target or Sam's Club or Shopko, since 1992.
Until 2 days ago, Hillary had not ridden in the front seat of a car since 1992.
When she was a child, her daddy owned a Cadillac.

The only thing she knows about us, is how to be a politician and make campaign promises.
When are you going to report on the factory closing in Indiana that happened under the Clinton admistration as opposed to the Bush administration as stated by Hillary. Do I have to go to ABC news? The media keeps asking if the Rev. Wright " controversy will go away but you guys keeps bringing it up. It's the lead story to the politcial section of the website.
Let's see, Clinton has to win almost 70% of the remaining delegates to overtake Obama's lead.  She'll need more than MO.  We all know she's looking to 2012--apparently she thinks in 4 years we'll have forgotten what she did to the Democratic party.  That ain't gonna happen!!!
So when does The DNC end this???

Hill is out for herself and is hurting the party bigtime.
Dems need to realize that she can not win and line up behind Obama. If The Dems want to lose then keep this going
Hillary may close the Gap to within a few points, and she is apparently campaigning better, but the delegates count is not in her favor.
Hillary makes me ill, I can not listen to her on TV and usually have to turn it off. Can you imagine what kind of dysfunctional government we will have
when she starts her shaming and blaming routine with foreign diplomats. not to mention the cajoling, manipulative style, of no substance except bragging about her Plans to remake the economy. I suppose I must have some psychological disorder, but the males of America should unite against this succubus
for the security of their own manhood.
what kind of blue collar person can not operate a gas pump or a coffee machine at the C store, and this woman is as she leads by innuendo, "a blue collar
woman, she is a panderer and fake, The desire to win at all costs is a scary thing.
As Joe Andrew said when switching sides her position on the gas holiday is mere ploitical manuevers,
and Obama shows restraint and sensibility from joining the bandwagon when the principle is to be guarded.

Is that what we should do to win...convince the superdelegates that more of us would stay home if our candidate is not the nominee.  How interesting.

That the superdelegates would show more allegiance to white working class Reagan "democrats" who sway with the wind, then they would to many of us historically blue blue blue Democrats is a troubling prospect.

I would say to the superDs, if you want to favor people who are never completely with you over people who historically have been but may bolt forever if they feel you dissed them, then go do it.

And expect many fewer Dems on the rolls for the forseeable future.

That watch the Republicans continue to pander to the Reagan Dems with Congressional races in 2010 and in 2012 and see how much of your base Dem support you have then.

Not trying to sound negative, trying to point out the ridiculousness in the argument.

Its a funny thing about loyalty and how fast you can get disenchanted voters back...
Obama's mo can only get better if the Paul vs Clinton scandal is exposed.  It's disturbing, check out Peter Paul's video on:

Hey, Hillary. Can I have my gas tax relief check now?  I need it to donate to Senator Obama's campaign.  Thanks.
Indiana and North Carolina --
There's the pitch
It's a sinker thrown by Hillary...Obama swings the bat with a mighty thunder...
Some where birds are singing and some where children are laughing but there's no joy in Billary ...The
Mighty Barack has crushed her "testicular fortitude" out of the park!!!!

Thanks to BARACK OBAMMA its JOHN MACAIN with hte big MO now ,enjoy the general election wait till you see what the find out about this guy in october.
Duh.  This is what you guys at First Read should have been reporting, but where is the drama in that?  Where is the divisiveness, the call to fight and disagree?  How many ticked off bloggers will you get with such boring dry numbers as this?
Who cares about the Mo?
The Mo is not the Math.
The math is the Math.
Superdelegates will have to steal it for Hillary,
and that would be a disaster for the party.
Obama is the Man.

Obama is a strong condidate. Look, he has been battered left, right and centre, yet he still holds up. People like Joe Andrew look at such - his handling of the heat. That is REAL heat, PLUS the clinton machinery!!

Save the democtratic party - VOTE Obama!!
People please continue to request that MSM and MSNBC report Peter Paul's lawsuit against the Clintons filed in California. It seems that the networks are afraid to report this before tuesday's primary. If you can report Obama's comments made in San Francisco, you can report this lawsuit against the Clintons. This has the makings of changing the outcome of this primary election in favor for Sen. Obama.
Let's not buy into the stupid Clinton spin, and acknowledge her point that she could better compete against McCain. Her negatives are through the roof, and 60 percent of the country thinks she's dishonest. And you really want to consider her prospects against a Republican who independents actually like?

Yes its delegates. But in stating that, we should acknowledge that the rest of the Clinton argument makes no sense, either.
The Rev. Wright comments are constantly being played as a scare tactic(Fox, Glenn Beck and many more) to make sure that the poor and middle class white voters think that all blacks are out to get them, which they held the belief before the Rev Wright.  This race has become a message to any other minority that he has the remote idea of running for the President in this country does not have a chance unless a white man says so.  This is something everyone has been avoiding for the longest, but its on all our minds.
