A controversy that wasn't

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
With the Indiana and North Carolina primaries less than 96 hours away, making its way around the pro-Obama blogosphere is a clip in this video of former prominent Clinton administration official Mickey Kantor appearing to call Indianans an expletive. It is an excerpt from the movie "The War Room" about the 1992 Clinton campaign. Kantor, James Carville and George Stephanopoulos are reading over results from various states, including Indiana, when Kantor says:

“Look at Indiana, wait, wait, look at Indiana: 42-40. It doesn’t matter if we win. Those people are [expletive]. Excuse me."

Kantor is a supporter of Hillary Clinton's, listed on the Clinton campaign Web site as one of several former Clinton administration officials backing her candidacy. He is also reported to be an informal adviser to her 2008 campaign.

*** UPDATE *** Huffington Post quotes Kantor on what he meant by the expletive: "Indiana was not even on our radar screen," he said, "And I was talking about the polling and not the people... If you look at The War Room, this is not the way Carville or George interpreted my statement. This is frankly libelous."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: We've adjusted the language in the first paragraph, because it's not clear Kantor is referring to Indianans.]

*** UPDATE 2*** The director of The War Room tells Ben Smith the film is doctored. One portion of another produced clip -- not included in this post -- making its rounds, is certainly doctored. We are in the process of checking the original film to see about the first expletive.

*** UPDATE 3 *** We've checked the original film, which we link to above. Quietly, you can hear an "-ing" on the end of the expletive. Then Kantor adds "...in the White House." He was NOT referring to the people of Indiana.

Thank You for taking a stand to post this!
So what is your point?
This video is in 1992 and it's news?
HRC thinks that by Killing Obama`s chances for the BIGGEST OFFICE in this country will guarantee her  the whitehouse in 2012 she is sadly misstaken as we will remeber what she did in 2008 and the voters will be deminished for her, sepecially the African American votes as we all know the African Americans do not forget what was taken from them.

The Clintons made this about race so that is the way it will end up. Nope I say that HRC will get her up
comings and a way that will scare the CRAP out of her.

There are record numbers of voters out there for the DEMOCRATS.
But if HRC keeps this up the way that she has it will all go away.

We are so tired of HRC that it hhurts.

Go Obama '08
America can not afford to continue on the low road.

Time to move on.
Thank you MSNBC... I was beginning to doubt your fairness..
finally some balance
Listen further with a good pair of headphones and the volume cranked. He follows the **** comment with "How would you like to be a worthless white n**ger?"

Get your audio people to enhance it, MSNBC. It's there.
THANK YOU SOMEBODY for finally posting this!!  I hope it runs through to the other MSM for the entire weekend and onto the IN primary....Barack on!
Low road mudslinging but after a month of Wright, Clinton should enjoy dealing with this.
Oh Hiiiiiiiiiillary... your elitism is showing... as is your hypocrisy.
..and you are not mentioning what he said next about the good folks of Indiana?  Why?
“Look at Indiana, wait, wait, look at Indiana: 42-40. It doesn’t matter if we win. Those people are [expletive]. Excuse me."

The man called you all a bunch of SH*TS!!
This is exactly what HRC thinks of you.
He should know as he WORKS for HRC

MSNBC, Oh now you post something...

What about Paul vs Clinton = FRAUD?

finally, fair reporting. I cannot believe my eyes. Well, it is about time. If we are going to talk about guilt by association with Obama, the same should occur with clinton. fair is fair.
A one word definition for Guilt-by-association is "innocence."

It doesn't matter if it's Bill or Michelle, Kantor or Wright ... the only one who gets to be President is the President. Only the character and integrity of Obama and Hillary matter. That's why Obama wins. Look at today's Zogby polls before you write your stories for the weekend.

Clinton's advisor also calls people from Indiana "worthless white nigg*rs"...to me, that's much more damaging!  I don't care if it happened years ago...the fact that Carville and Stephanopolis just stood there and didn't say anything is so telling!

OBAMA/WEBB '08 & '12
TWO MEN WHO WON'T CALL ANYBODY WORTHLESS, WHITE NIGG*RS!
I wonder if the MSM will give Hilliary as hard a time about this guy as they they have given Barack about Dr Wright! This person is a direct supporter of her campaign, not someone she is affiliated with.
See, now why isn't this being played on the network?
There is that small states do not matter - only states that we win or need count, even in 1992.
Cannot change a leopards spots.
SHAME ON YOU HILLARY FOR HAVING THIS MAN ON YOUR STAFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't forget that he also calls Indianans "worthless white n***ers"
um, it's on more than just pro-Obama sites.  Drudge has it on the front page.  Since when was he in the bag for BO?  As a Hoosier, I don't see this as very helpful.
And Carville who reveled in the conversation, one of her biggest supporters and closest of Clinton allies, And Georgie Girl (boy)... well interesting how he plays non-partisan, above-it-all journalist now - huh! He may not have dug some graves for the Clintons in 92 and at the WH, but he sure as shootin' knows where some bodies are buried. And he gets to toss softballs at her on Sunday - outrageous!
and then he calls them wortheless white ni**ers!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN_nQOHj__s

ITS APPALLING!
Wake Up Indiana.

Hillary doesn't care about you. She only wants your votes and then you won't hear from her again until the next time She NEEDS something.

It's all about Hillary and Bill. They are not about you.
He also calls them "worthless white n*ggers."  Report that, too.
Clinton supporters.. Hillary takes credit for Bill's good deeds.. lets see how much credit she takes for his misfits and bad deeds..  I am interested to see the spin the clintons put on this one.. oops I forgot this is MSNBC not CNN so I guess this won't be reported on any of the shows.. lol.. what is the difference between the leadership at MSNBC and Hillary clinton.. NOTHING, THEY ARE ONE IN THE SAME.. THEY ARE GREEDY MONEY HUNGRY JACK ASSES.. but I am sure this won't be posted.
This makes me sick!!!
Nice try but this won't be another BITTER GATE. What msnbc and drudge won't do and invest in digging up old NON- STORIES against Hillary and Bill Clinton.
You people are so predictable !! NBC/MSNBC dictates their daily talking points for Todd as he makes his way around the Obama Network shows and you all pretend to be legitimate, honest conveyers of facts. I suppose you digging up this drivel from 16 years ago is an example of Obama's "NEW POLITICS". FRAUDS !!
Uh, you left out the part where he calls people from Indian "Worthless white n--gers."

nice people...

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/5/2/93316/53926/838/507664
Ummmm . . .what about the rest of it?  The part when he says to George "how would you like a worthless white *****"?  Are we going to see the whole thing on TV?
This underscores what the Clinton people really think of "working class" Americans!

If they don't vote for the Clintons, they are worthless...

We'll see how Hillary responds to her YouTube moment
I saw this, it is a disgusting display of the politics that America has sunk into. Do you think the Clintons have changed much since then? I wonder if Morning Joe or Chris Matthews or other pundits will actually cover this? I'd be surprised.
The offensive part of the conversation occurs around the 4:40 mark.

Another shorter -- and more polarizing -- version of the footage can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN_nQOHj__s (as linked on the Drudge Report)
And this is exactly what Carville and George and Kantor have been all about.

Wonder if the MSM has the guts to show what a paid staffer has to say.

Well ABC are you going to show this clip?
Well, that beats all - look how gleeful they are...  And do read and watch Blumenthal - all these guys have become a caricature of their old selves.  So sad - but it's clearly time to move on, as they have become what they abhorred!
Someone needs to do a definitive "Electability" score card for these 2 candidates, listing all positives and negatives. When will the media begin to remind voters of the Clinton highjinx from that scandal ridden administration? They have been sailing through this campaing completely unfettered by their past misdeeds and mistakes. If Obama is going to be hung for Wright, Ayars, etc. then they deserve equal treatment. If voters become reminded of what Republicans will plaster the media with if Hillary is the nominee they might recover from their amnesia. Way too many have swallowed the Clinton memory-fade Kool Aid!
Is this a real video of these three men or not?  I'm confused..............
Guys C'mon. Is this Hillary Clinton speaking? No.Is this something present but way back in the 90"s?What does this have to do with Hillary Clinton?I normally grade you guys higher than anyone else but this is like the national inquirer.Lets get back to substance as you normally do.I am a bit disappointed.
Uhum, FirstRead, your explanation that there is an "ing" on the end is not even the same as Kantor's own explanation to the Huffington Post. He says he was talking about "polls"  but it sounded like "people."  This from the group who took Obama's remarks in SF totally out of context.  How about a little fairness?
you guys are running scared!
the Clintons have you by the short hairs.

He does not say 'sh*tting'
He says "Those people are Sh*t."

You can hear it here at 4:40 > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_wKOgMNs0U

Have you been threatened with legal action?
An -ING at the end? I don't think so MSNBC. He said those people are SH*T. Not the verb to insinuate that the WH was freaking out over the poll numbers. And honestly, films get doctored before they get released. The audio is inaudible in the original but that is his voice in the Youtube clip circulating.

When something is inaudible or spoken softly, you can imagine it to sound like just about anything (there's decades of recorded popular music to demonstrate this phenomenon), and subtitles only add to the effect.

What was actually said was:  "Those people are sh***ing – excuse me – in the white house"; "How would you like to be... in the White House or in Texas?"

Of course, people will beleive whatever they want to believe and hear whatever they want to hear...and  so Obama supporters are all over the net right now -- some even right here -- denouncing the racist Kantor and his Clinton master(s).

I'm guessing this is what Mickey really thinks:  why oh why does my divided democratic party think they can win the white house when they are continually smearing themselves with the spectre of racism -- both real and imagined.

The Obamamaniacs are getting nervous and are resorting to cheating and lying to get a win in Indiana. How sad for the Obamamaniacs.
Your bias against Clinton is amazing! After verifying that the clip has been doctored and doesn't refer to the people of Indiana, you still leave the original headline and story which most people will glance atand think is genuine and you only put a little update telling readers that he actually didn't refer to the people of Indiana. CHANGE THE HEADLINE OF THE STORY! You people disgust me!
Can someone explain to me how neither I, nor the person I watched this with this morning heard anything other than what Mr. Kantor said (as first reported).

Can someone explain to me why Mr. Kantor first apologized for these statements if he never made them?

This is bizarre!  I know the director of the War Room is a friend of both Clintons, but doesn't someone have the original?  As I said before, this is bizarre!

If the tape is doctored, why did Mr. Kantor first apologize for the comments?  How do you forget whether you made such arrogant, incendiary comments about the people of an entire state?  I could not  forget -- could you?  I repeat, this is bizarre.

This bothers me particularly since my fiance and his family are all Hoosiers.  I want to know what happened-- and I really do not want to be spun.  I prefer Senator Obama anyway, but if one of Senator Clinton's top campaign strategists feels like this about Hoosiers he should be fired (and yesterday).  I want to know the truth about this one, please!!!

Right now, the explanation does NOT make any sense.  Why did Mr. Kantor apologize in the first place???
Different kind of politics, hey Barack?  Your campaign doctored a video in the interests of defamation!!

You are a hypocrite just as Wright alleges as this is another example.

You should not be the nominee.  If you are, you will lose the general election.  I absolutely guarantee it.  You claim Clinton is negative, but the exact opposite is true.  Again, a hypocrite.
Barack Obama had nothing to do with this.  It was a few hyper-zealous supporters feeling the need to push back against what they think is Hillary Clinton's spin machine sliming their candidate.  Move on.
What video were you looking at Domenico?

You can clearly see and hear Cantor say those people are shit. I sense a cover-up by the media imposed by the Clinton campaign. Only the liberal radio media is covering this. Ed Shultz is talking about it. He's not scared like MSNBC and the rest of MSM. Even the Huffington Post seems to be intimidated by Cantor idle threats of suing them and anyone else who's writing or posting this story.
