The day in delegates

Posted: Friday, May 02, 2008 6:13 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The Delegate Counts:
SUPERDELEGATES: CLINTON 273, OBAMA 250
PLEDGED: OBAMA 1,490, CLINTON 1,336
OVERALL: OBAMA 1,740, CLINTON 1,609

NBC NEWS allocated two more pledged delegates for Clinton in Pennsylvania, bringing her total there to 85-73 over Obama. (It's worth pointing out that the now famous -- and mostly very accurate -- leaked Obama campaign delegate projection chart estimated an 83-75 split.)

The Day in Superdelegates: Clinton 1, Obama 1
Heading into the weekend, here's a quick recap of today's superdelegate announcements, as the slow crawl to this Democratic nomination and the magic number of 2,025 to clinch continues on.

* Clinton added, a short time ago, the support of Texas DNC Member Jaime A. Gonzalez Jr., an attorney. "I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I am convinced that she is the best choice for President," Gonzalez said, per a campaign release. "She has shown the leadership qualities that we need to win the presidency in the general election and give Democrats a victory in November."

* Obama's campaign this morning unveiled the support of former DNC Chairman Paul Kirk. (Despite a Clinton campaign e-mail suggesting Kirk was not new, Kirk never officially endorsed a candidate, and was therefore new in our count.)

More Fun with Numbers:
* There are 272 undeclared superdelegates.
* Since Pennsylvania, Obama has picked up 13 supers to Clinton's 11.
* Since Super Tuesday, Feb. 5: It's Obama +80, Clinton +13.
* Since Junior Super Tuesday, March 4: It's Obama +37, Clinton +20.

* Also note, with the Illinois state convention over the weekend, Obama is slated to pick up the three superdelegate add-ons from the state: Chicago Mayor Richard Daley; Illinois House Maj. Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, who lives in Obama's Hyde Park neighborhood, per the Chicago Sun-Times; and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger. Since these have not been officially appointed yet (they will be by Monday), the NBC News Political Unit has not added them to the count as yet.

Another one for the good guy....
*yawn* numbers, numbers.
It's amazing how close the actual pledged delegates have come out compared to his expectations speadsheet.......He couldn;t of expected some of the things that came out with Wright, Bitter and he STILL is very cose to his expectations......COUNTDOWN....Only 279 until he's the nominee

Kathy, Pinellas Park Fl.,

Thanks for the tip. 'The Empire Strikes Baracky', on you tube, is indeed a scream. Have you seen 'Baracky', on you tube, with Obama as Rocky?

It is hillarious. No pun intended.
Chuck Todd (on your 'War of Attrition'):  I so hope you are wrong that a block of Superdels are waiting to force Obama to put Clinton on the ticket!  I can't imagine a weaker Veep for the ticket!!  Hopefully they will be looking for real creds not her imaginary ones, and a compliment to Obama not the antithesis!!!
How many superdupers are coming out for Obama in Oregon? They must be so pleased that he has promised them to help clean up their Great Lakes.Guess he does not know the Great Lakes are in MI---you know the state that he thinks are not allowed to have their votes counted. What a dunce..........
Michelle looks so ridiculous on TV. Where is the "beauty" and "glamour" that Obama supporters talk about? I don't see it. The woman has a BIG chip on her shoulder about America and Americans.
Interesting video about Hillary and Bill. The case of Paul v Clinton. This has been going on for several years now. Why hasnt the mainstream media discussed this? Much more important than Hillary's sniper or Obama's preacher.

After the Indiana and North Carolina primaries Hillary Clinton will have won Indiana and exceed expectations in NC and then the super delegates will throw their support behind the stronger candidate and the next presdident...Hillary Clinton.
Its quite interesting that 15 months ago Billary was the "golden girl" of the democratic party!!

I'm throughly enjoying the whoop @?? This midwestern kid is throwing down.

Billary is taking a beating at their own game!!!!  BEAUTIFUL!!!

Its the delegates stupid!!  80 to 13 since super tuesday.  Its over Hillary,  let Obama get on with McCain.
Obama's campaign should now get former DNC chair Joe Andrew and make an Ad about why he has switched from Clinton to Obama.  Cite all the reasons he gave in his endorsement letter and hammer in on the gas issue.  Take that ad and run it in IN & NC over the weekend.
I think it's worth mentioning that a total of four add-on super delegates are selected in Maryland, Louisiana and South Carolina tomorrow. Obama won those states by large margins, and it is expected (but not certain) that he will pick up all four add-ons, in addition to the three on Monday from Illinois.
It seems that the reason that more Hispanic superdelegates seem to support Hillary is because of racial issues, not because of Hillary's qualities. By qualities, the superdelegate meant disintegrity, dishonesty (these are what voters said in the polls) and deception. What other qualities does he mean, Chuck?
Please note that predictions are predictions, and what Obama's campaign was noting did not amount to accuracy, but estimates. Hillary's campaign has also estimated winnings, but often wildly inaccurate. In Miss. her campaign started celebrating for "moral victory," only to learn the next day that Obama met the threshold.
To Indiana and North Carolina McCain supporters, and Republicans:
I agree with the Hillary supporters that say a vote for Obama is a vote for McCain. And there is a general consensus among the national GOP that Obama is the weaker candidate. It seems likely that a vote for Obama would help McCain. This is the Clinton supporters argument.
So all McCain supporters, cross over on Tuesday and vote for Obama. According to the Clinton supporters, McCain will crush Obama. So lets end this now by voting for Obama. This would be the smart play.
McCain does not want to face the vaunted Clinton political machine. She has so much experience. McCain would be in trouble.
So Indiana and NC Republican McCain supporters, cast your vote for Obama on Tuesday. Trust me, you do not want to face Clinton. She's scary.
Hillary needs to get Fla. and Mich back in play now! She needs to move the finish line which will change the percentages. Even with Fla. and Mich. in play she will be behind, but with a strong finish it will be so close the Super-delegates can comfortably go to her without it looking to unseamly.
Obama is now unelectable! Taking this nomination away from him may not be fair to him but screw him! I for one want a democrat in the Whitehouse.I voted for Obama here in Mass. before the truth came out. Now I feel stupid.
These Superdelegates are going to Obama because they think 2025 is the magic number. With this STUPID proposional delegate system he will now get to that number first. They just want to be with the winner. What they really should do is the right thing. Save the party from disaster. Does anyone really believe that Obama would be leading if every state could revote today?
Fla. and Mich. are the key!More noise is needed. Obama must be stopped no matter how unfair it may be to him. The issues are to important. In this case the ends justify the means!
why no reporting on Paul vs Clinton? maybe I missed it as I now watch CNN...much more balanced news and no one who thinks they are hot stuff like Gregory, Joe and Chris...they really get old...
I am asking this question honestly, because I really wonder if anyone knows the answer.  Why is the press so biased for Hillary Clinton?
Is the Texas guy related to Alberto??
Just did a bit of my own math and it looks to me that Obama may be able to take the nomination even without any more superdelegates.

There are 503 remaining elected delegates from the 7 states + Guam and Puerto Rico.

Obama only needs 287 more of those 503 delegates (57% ) to take get to the magic number of 2,025. Based on most estimates of how the primaries will go, Obama could very well end this by or before June 3.
On the other hand Hillary needs 422 of those 503 remaining elected delegates ( 83.9% ). Not gonna happen.

So much for the "nobody can win without superdelegates" argument
What a shame for Obama that he can't win blue-collar workers in the 2 most important swing states in the country (OH and PA)....

If he's the frontrunner, shouldn't older white females, Hispanics, Catholics, Jews, ethnic white males, and blue-collar workers be voting for him????

I don't think Obama will be able to beat McCain in Nov b/c I don't think he'll be able to carry PA and OH
Check out the Clinton Liagra Ad on the Web - What a Hoot!!
It is time for MSNBC to cover the lies:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xR8BCkZYcQ
I hope you and you kids fight fight WWIII.
When the media decides to give some attention to the Paul vs Clinton court case it will all be over.Clinton should be in the big house not the white house. Nobody asking Clinton about her ties.Everybody needs to check this case out quickly.
The 'Race' Speech Revisited

"I can no more disown him [Jeremiah Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother."

-- Barack Obama, Philadelphia, March 18

Guess it's time to disown Granny, if Obama's famous Philadelphia "race" speech is to be believed.
Obama will end this at the end.  By the way, did anyone see McCain tell a group of Repulicans that the only reason we are in in Iraq is because of oil(the truth) but messed up because the American Public were sold a bill of goods we went there for democracy!! What a joke-I  hope people really don't believe that.  I also love the Rove play book gas tax that Clinton is using and Obama is telling the truth about. What about that-the truth!!!
Obama 08
What about Obama and Jim Webb? I just hope the good people of this country don't vote republican. It's been a mess for the last seven plus years.  People need to think for themselves. I am amazed at how many koolaid drinkers there are out there.
Chuck Todd -- Every one --- it is a must read

War of Attrition - the scrutiny of people in first place - an honest - bruttaly honest - review of what has happened and what is happening

Great writing - and its NOT numbers!!

Ted in chicago

Oh - and given the momentum - and recent numbers at Gallup and Rasmussen - I do hope HRC does give BO a position as VP --- and in return - she gives up running a second time -- publicly!!
Olbermann and Countdown are ticked because Hillary did a two-part interview with O'Reilly on The Factor, which came off pretty well. This is what Countdown gets when it aligns itself with far left groups who are trying to run the Democratic Party.

Obama did a Fox interview with Chris Wallace and even Howard Dean will do Fox next.

Meanwhile Olbermann still interviews only like-minded individuals and plays the overly biased leftwinger to the max. And it gets him last place in the ratings but everyday comfort from his Olbermann idol-worshippers.
OBAMA IS AHEAD IN EVER AREA THAT COUNTS AND HAVE BEEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME. HE IS NOT GETTING THE RESPECT HE DESERVES.  iF CINTON WAS AHEAD , YOU AND ALL OF THE MEDIA WOULD HAVE LAUGHT HIM OUT OF THE RACE.  tHIS IS MORE THAN A DOUBLE STANDARD, IT CAREFUL , YOUR RACIST IS SHOWING AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE LOOKING. pLEASE FOR  THE GOOD OF YOUR COUNTRY NOT YOUR RATING , TALK ABOUNT THE ISSUES AND NOT RACE. ( MAYBE , YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET PAST THIS UGLY STAIN THAT THIS COUNTRY HAVE TRIED TO HIDE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU AND YOUR CO-WORKERS.
GO HILLARY !!!!
Clinton has proven to be the best candidate - Obama is not electable due to his questionable background.
I will not vote for Obama - for anything!
So - Clinton or McCain!
could you explane how clinton has 13 since feb. 5 and then has 20 since march 4th.  what am i missing?
I wish the media would shut up anf let the people elect. We know who YOU want, don't we. And if he should , I hope he doesn't, put her on the ballot, I hope he watches his back, because we all know she is one slick dude who will stop at nothing.
Obama has only won the white middle class vote in two states; Utah and Vermont.  Clinton did not campaign in either state. How are we going to win the general election if Barack cannot carry the swing vote here?  Let's be real here, he has not been able to carry the necessary block in any one of the key battleground states. He's even put NY into play.  Starry eyed, naive, so called "progressives" are setting us up for another Republican Presidency. If Obama does not win in IN and fails to claim a double digit win in NC, he needs to drop out for the good of the Party.

Watch for another Wright strike before Tuesday. He will speak again and he will speak personally of his relationship with Obama.

Thanks!
You guys have to be kidding! If MSNBC and their cheerleaders would tell you the truth. The Super Delegate movement to Obama has been the concern over the possibility of a black backlass. All politics "are local" and many in their congressional district are just covering their a..and could care less about who is President if their job might be on the line. The "rats" that are jumping ship are only going to another rat infested ship. I was taught "my word is my bond" and I would not trust anyone who could not live up to his, and worst one who did not have the courage to tell the person he was leaving. Real Hero. Andrew and Richardson, their political careers are in the toilet.
Check out The Empire Strikes on Barack on UTUBE!  Rocks!!!!!!!!!
Therefore, if you count the three we expect Obama to pick up, he only needs 282 to get to the nomination.  While Clinton needs 416 delegates.  If there is only 272 undeclared supers, how contests must Clinton win and by what margins in order to get to the promised land.
What would be a eal shame would be "giving" Hilary the nomination based on her lies, empty promises, pandering, etc... Someone show me any evidence of what she has done for NY since being a Senator.. More empty promises.. She will do this, she will do that.. all empty promises... she is using the gas tax holiday to bambozzle the North Carolinians and the people of Indiana. Please for the sake of our children and grandchildren,, do not let this worthless user destroy our country more than it already is.. She can't wait to bomb Iran.. She now has Iran pissed off.. When will she stop??  When will you stop her???
Split 'em 50-50...catchup is a soup served cold...

Obama'08
FirstRead, can you please do a story or elaborate on MagnaQuench(not sure of exact name) discussed during Hardball? In Matthews' interview with Brian Howey, there was a memo from Bayh leaked about him blaming Clintons for the move of the Magnet plant to China.
Check out my website for a more detailed analysis into the race.  Add-ons and Superdelegates should be treated separately.

Also, the projection is that Clinton will need to win between 85% and 91% of the uncommitted superdelegates (assuming charitable 32-32 split of the last 64 add-on delegates) to win the nomination.

http://superdelegateland.blogspot.com

http://superdelegateland.blogspot.com/2008/05/three-separate-yet-intertwined-races.html

It is a sad day when Americans would rather see 300,000 other Americans lose their jobs so they could save $28 - $30 worth of gas for three months.

It is even sadder when a presidential candidate feels nothing regarding the prospect of these people losing their jobs so she can win an election.

What if that was your mom, dad, brother or sister losing their jobs? How would you make it? All of that for $28 worth of gas.

Haven’t we been screwed enough?  Haven’t enough jobs been lost to foreign countries? We should never lose jobs because someone wants to win votes.
What delegate chart Chuck? Can you put it up somewhere??
Please superdelegates do you job on may 7 because this is really going for too long and Mr McBush is having too much fun. GO Obama!!!!!!!!
The convoluted method in use by the democratic party to select their presidential nominee will hopefully be reviewed and changed after this election.  Here is a link to a good read on the current delegate watch.  This includes a scenario where neither Obama or Clinton would receive the necessary 2025 delegates needed to secure the party nomination: http://airitoutwithgeorge.blogspot.com/2008/05/democratic-party-delegate-watch.html
Questions for Mr. Obama.  1. Since you have disassociated your self from your Pastor, do you disassociate yourself from his church teachings 'Black Liberation Theology"?  2. Do you know about the philosophy, principals, values and teachings of black liberation theology?
It is amazing that Obama has withstood the might of BOTH the established parties. All the old school Clinton machine Democrats and the "Operation Chaos" Republicans alongside the McCain supporters. Why is it that the tools of the special interest groups fear him so much??? Real change is coming if we have the courage to ask for it. Stop the cycle of fear and the gridlock of partisan polarization!!! Do we really want the pendulum to swing back to Liberal special interests over conservative special interests? Or do we want someone who can govern from the center? Wake up America, it isn't a dream. We can work together to solve our problems but not with a Clinton in the Whitehouse.
I saw a letter from Black block of voters threatening the supers.Isnt this illegal? I think enough is enough and we better take our country back. If he gets in and says he is new dictator than what? We let him cause we are afraid of blacks. I think we better put a stop tp this now.I dont threaten well. What ever they may do is nothing they will do if we cave in out of fear to them.Wake up
After all he has been through and all she had to start with why isn't the media questioning how weak Hillary must be.  If u cant win a Dem nomination with all the entire Dem machine behind you, you must really suck.

Go Obama
