Saturday nooner: Clinton, NC, Obama

Posted: Saturday, May 03, 2008 12:01 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd
Because this next set of primaries (Indiana and North Carolina) is really the last major Tuesday of the primary season (sorry Oregon, sorry Kentucky, Montana etc.), I'm feeling it's necessary to make the weekend feel semi-busy. Here's my news and notes after purging my inbox this morning:
-- Guam: They are still counting in the Pacific. Track returns here; Obama leads but who knows how much vote is still out.
-- Tarring The Head Heel? At last night's N.C. JJ-dinner, the crowd leaned Obama which became apparent when Clinton surrogate/Gov. Mike Easley was booed. Clinton decided to avoid drawing contrasts with Obama, while Obama didn't, according to our friends at the Raleigh News & Observer.
-- Obama's Green Get: Friends of the Earth, one of the more liberal and less financially potent enviro groups, officially came out for Obama, using the gax tax debate as the reason they went to Obama.
-- War For Oil? Here's a story that won't go away for McCain once the glare of the nat'l media is off of the Democrats: John McCain may have made one of those classic Washington gaffes where he accidentally said what he believed: McCain seem to imply even after clarifying differently, that the war in Iraq was over oil.
-- Random thought to ponder re: NC: Rev. Wright has hurt Obama more in NC than Indiana. Because Obama has concentrated so much time and resources in Indiana, he seems to have kept himself from cratering there but N.C. is another story. Perhaps the campaign believes they had a big enough lead to hold off Clinton; Obama's gas tax pushback seems to be getting real traction in Indiana, while the N.C. campaign is more racially polarized.
-- Speaking of N.C.: if Ace Smith pulls off this upset in the Tar Heel state, he'll be the new star of the Dem cycle as far as consultants are concerned. He was in charge of Clinton's effort in California and Texas and now he has the tough task of trying to pull even in N.C. So far, so good.
-- Clinton's O'Reilly Flub? During her Bill O'Reilly interview and in a press release issued earlier this week, Clinton pledged to use the WTO as a way to pressure OPEC nations on the price of oil. But the WTO explicitly exempts energy and there are some who argue that if WTO did get involved in energy, it would only benefit the major oil companies.  Bottom line, it's not clear Clinton is dealing in reality on this issue since there really isn't a legal process to use the WTO to attack OPEC, but it sure sounds good, right? O'Reilly never followed up with her on this issue, perhaps he didn't know about the energy exemption in the WTO. No doubt Clinton will have to answer for this the next time she's grilled on this inconsistency. Folks who really understand this issue expressed concern that Clinton so easily talked about this as a viable option when it is apparently not.
-- Clinton's up in Oregon on TV: if for some reason she pulls the upset in North Carolina, Obama's last shot at keeping Superdelegates from abandoning him will be to win in Oregon. Like N.C., Obama starts with a lead but it's not insurmountable.  Watch her first ad here.
-- Rush To Clinton: The Clinton camp has a small spin problem when it comes to doing well with GOP crossover voters: It's now being seen as a given in many reports that any support for her is courtesy of Rush Limbaugh. Take a look at this NYT piece about GOP participation in the Dem primaries. Clinton camp doesn't seem to be getting credit for attracting more conservative primary voters.
-- Special Election Watch: There's a Saturday election in Louisiana's 6th C.D. where Dems are very confident they can pick off another GOP-held seat. The GOP is using this special as a test run in how to use Obama as a negative against Democrats. We'll see how successful each side is. A Dem loss will be used by the Clinton campaign as proof Obama's becoming as toxic (if not more so) than Clinton for downballot Democrats.  Track the results when polls close at the Baton Rouge Advocate web site.

Just exactly what is Barack Obama trying to do?

(1) Overturn a culture of cynicism and institutional corruption dating back before any of us were born.

(2) Begin a new day of people comming together to build solutions to problems, instead of tearing each other apart for political gain.

(3) Begin the healing of the wounds of war, sickness and economic deprivation built up from the decades of cynicism and institutional corruption.

It is no wonder that all the forces of the darker side of our civilization have come forward to oppose him.

May God be with him.
I'm still looking for the day when reporters present facts, not opinions. Please...
The Clinton, and McCain supporters give them a pass on every lie, and stupid gaffe they utter.

However, Senator Obama is hated for what everybody, their mother, and dead relatives have said.

Where is the justice in this?
Hillary "Republican" Clinton will throw out any idiotic idea to try to get some extra votes.  She didn't even check the facts of what the WTO does and does not do as regards OPEC's actions.

Her support of the McCain gas tax cut holiday political gimmick shows she will say anything to get nominated.  All that gas tax cut gimmick will do is raise demand for oil thus take money away from our government while allowing OPEC to raise the price of oil $10 a barrel.  I'd rather keep our money here where we will benefit rather than give it to the OPEC ripoff artists.

Go Obama!
So if the WTO comment is such an issue, I wonder why we went through all of the political shows yesterday w/o mention of it.  The answer, of course, is because they were too busy STILL going on and on and on about Rev. Wright.  As I say continually in my comments, I agree Wright is an issue, but he's not the only issue as MSNBC would have voters believe.
When Hillary held a 5 point lead going into the Pa. primary, you were sure to report it exactly so. It was what it was!

Now Barack's lead is reported as "Hillry's consultant's efforts to pull her even with Obama is so far so good". Why the slant? If Obama is still ahead percentage points, why are we not given those?

But it's ok. What G-D has given him, you cannot take away.
Thanks for the update. I needed that little political fix.  Gotta go now and make some calls to Indiana for Obama!!
Better coverage on what's happening than the past few days.  Keep up the good work.
Oh Chuckie, Oh Chuckie she going to win Indiana double digit where coming out and where coming out strong, and guess what the story is out of Fox that your in the Tank with the Obama camp. What? you didn,t think pay attention to these sort of thing Chuckie and you are so srident in your beating the drum well, chuckie us ladies are going to do you a big fat favor were going to love you anyway as we win and win big so word to the wise pundit who call her out in N.H. and said she had to win big in Pennsylvania, Here a news alert for you chuckie she going to win Indiana Big and make a upset in N.C. and even so your male ego can,t accept it watch and see! Yes We Will! Yes We Will!
I recall the comments against Nixon when people would ask 'Would you buy a car from this man?'. Who would I trust enough to buy a car from? - I would have to say Obama. Anyone who has read the book 'Overthrow' would have a hard time trusting the Republicans to do anything for this country - except maybe destroy it!
Chuck,

For heaven's sake, give us the percentage points that Obama holds over Clinton in NC. Enough with the "so far so good", reference to her consultant.

What are the polling numbers saying in Guam, and Indiana as well?

Come on. Give us a break. Please.
I live in NC, and trust me, Obama will win here! There have already been about 400,000 early votes cast. Out of those, they report that Obama has probably received around 60% of those. Watch the Urban areas Tuesday night. If Obama wins all of the urban counties in NC ( Wake, Guilford, Forsyth, Buncombe,Durham,Mecklenburg) then he will win by atleast 10%.
OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT

DUMP CLINTEN
Great analysis as always Todd is the best. They need to have more Todd on MSNBC and less morning Joe. Bet the colonel in today's derby
guam.... every delegate counts. somehow this race is good because it is all inclusive. every ameerican feels important, which is good. American politics will never be the same again.
That's it ...The people are finally see McShame...
Quick fixes to passive the voters....These are tough times and solutions to problems will not be easy...
Senator Obama works the problems with more deligence and fire power than Clinton or McCain....There's an opportunity to really make a difference in Washington and that's been Obama's bread and butter since the start of his campaign....

CHANGE is a MUST!!! Send the correct answer to Washington...Vote Obama'08
"Hillary Clinton also has called for Guamanians to be able to vote in presidential elections."

Will this woman say anything to get elected. I just hope the voters in Indiana and NC can see past this and end this missery.
It is not surprising to those of us in North Carolina that our Governor, Mike Easily (Sold to the highest bidder) was booed. He has never been all that much a part of the NC Democratic Party organization and he doesn't have a state wide organization like Governors Rendell or Strickland. He has a reputation here in NC for mostly being the laziest governor in state history and he spends most of his time, and lots of taxpayer money at his beach house on the coast. Were it not for his top two aides running the governor's office, NC would have had a vacancy in the office for the past 8 years.

Governor Easily (Sold to the highest bidder) can probably only deliver the votes of his redneck racist buddies in 10 or 12 southeastern NC counties.

Obama in '08 and North Carolina will elect a REAL GOVERNOR in '08!
I find your treatment of NC as if an upset was possible or even suggested by current polls, well, strange. It is highly unlikely and even if it is not impossible, there is nothing in the polls that suggest we are anywhere close to such a scenario. I mean his average poll numbers in NC are higher than her average was in PA.
As an Obama supporter I am glad the expectations for Hillary are so out-of-whack this time (karma for Oh/TX/PA) but this is a little silly.
Real expectations should be that IN is a close state in which Hillary seems to have the momentum. And NC is a demographically very favorable state for Obama that he should win comfortably, even if not with the margins his supporters could have hoped for two weeks ago.
But CW expectations this weekend seems to be that IN will go for Hillary and that NC is tight.
Interesting.
Thank you for simply printing facts. The more factual the data, the better for Obama. It is unfortunate that the Clintons and media were able, for so long, to distract the public from the real Obama.
CLINTON=MCCAIN=BUSH ON ECONOMICS AND IRAQ.

REV. WRIGHT DOES NOT WANT OBAMA TO WIN BECAUSE HIS HATE ARGUMENT WILL NOT BE VALID

CLINTONS ARE TOO "CONNECTED" TO WASHINGTON AND CORPORATIONS.
Has anyone, other than me, wondered why wright came out at this time. remember the phrase, "by any means possible". now it looks like she is going to win, by any means possible.
why doesnt any one talk about CODE PINK...they have been supporting Obama and he lets them....they give money to groups who are fighting our US troops right now! They are funding our US Troop deaths! Check it out!!!!!!
It seems that Mr Todd would like to see this contest for the democratic nomination go on and on and on. He should just tell us he is in the Clinton camp.
Is MSNBC seriously having a special on if Senator Obama acted fasted enough on the REV Wright story? This is unbelievable.

I am totally stunned.  Can someone explain to me why this would be important enough to have a SPECIAL ON.
Let's talk about the agenda at the JJ dinner last night.  Clinton spoke  early and treated courteously by the O camp.  His supporters had to wait through speech after speech.  Finally, after nearly 5 hours, our moment had  come.  Whoops, no, sorry, you get to hear yet another speech, from Gov. Easley.  Had he been on earlier, the response would have been different.  When he started wagging his finger and lecturing, the reaction intensified.  When Senator Obama FINALLY came out, the roar from the crowd nearly blew the roof off.
"If for some reason she pulls the upset in North Carolina, Obama's last shot at keeping Superdelegates from abandoning him will be to win in Oregon."

Chuck, your wording here suggests that Superdelegates are abandoning Obama and he quickly needs a win to stop them. But isn't that the precise opposite of the truth? There is no evidence that they are abandoning him or will abandon him. If for some reason Clinton pulls off an upset in NC, she'll still need to win Oregon too. By your own numbers, it's Clinton who needs to large margin wins in every state from now through the last contest.
God Todd, why don't you just come out for Clinton and get it over with. Obama is picking up positive poll numbers and more superdelegates are coming out for him but you HAVE to put a Clinton spin on Guam. The "things can still change for Clinton" is getting as old as your rhetoric. When you decide to come back to reality let us know...if we really care by then. Destroy the MSM: Save the internet environment.
Obama people are so classy arent they? They boo there Governor. They show why Obama is no where ready. I have a question /When Obama says he and Ayers(the terrorist) are friends ,visit each others home, kids school togeather. Why didnt he tell us about his wife and Ayers wife(the one did time for bombings)worked for same law firm. This was before and after her prison time I think.Has anyone heard about this part of the story? This guy has so many skeltons the closet door wont close anymore. They are tunbling out now though. He made the Ayers friendship sound so aloof. He parcels what he has to no more. The new politian. changes he will make. The boards he and wife sat on will make a story of there own.
I am from Oregon and saw Hils commercial.....

She looks nice and well rested.........

But she is still full of sh*t.....

I will be voting for the one who inspires all to make a difference, who says it just isn't about him, it's about all of us and what we want for our Country, I want honesty and integrity, not pandering to get votes and then forget you after your vote....

I am almost 40, white and a little bitter about the way washington has been run, and it looks like Huckabee Hil wants to be the next Bush lately

I can't wait to vote here in oregon for Barack Obama
BIG THING to watch is that for 2 days now Obama has been trending up (and Clinton down) in all the tracking polls.  All the stories are being written about polls from Late April thru May 1st (now ancient history!!).  Wright story is dying, Gas taxes and Obama focusing on issues and working class voters is more current.  Surely Obam is getting some bounce back toward his former support level.  Thus, as we head to the election, the trend is shifting toward him.  The Sunday AM news show apearances will probably set the final tone.
If Ace Smith is such a genius, why does Obama have more Texas delegates?
CHUCK, what are you guys doing at MSNBC!!
You ran the Rev Wright story for a full hour Friday night 6-7pm PST. I just switched on the TV and you are running Rev. Wright story for another full hour 10 - 11am PST. Where is the fair and balanced news. There has been nothing about HRC, I am totally disgusted with MSNBC, I really thought you were not a bias news organization...like FOX!!

GO OBAMA!!!!
I honestly hope that Clinton wins now. As the GOP start their machine, I think they have a better shot at demolishing Obama. I hope Clinton saves the democratic party. If Obama is nominated, not only will the Dems lose the White house in a year when Dems have everything going for them, but also the congress will swing red too. No one can really blame Clinton since she didn't make Wright say those things. She didn't make Obama say those bitter comments. She didn't make Rezko go to trial for fraud. All these problems, were Obama's own fault.
I am very dismayed that Dan Abrahms saw fit to run still another anti-Obama show about Rev. Wright. The horse is dead, and your insistance to show a show that may have been relevant and produced on Tuesday, is now just a distraction until the GE. I would encourage ALL Obama supporters to write msnbc at Letters@msnbc.com to complain about this blatant charade at news on the weekend before the election. Thankfully, no one is watching except we Obama watchdogs!! Fox is more fair at this point!
Why is Hillary wasting time in N.C.? She'll lose by a comfortable 10 there while Obama could upset her in Indiana . Her advisors screwed up on this one . That'll be the story next week.
SHAME ON YOU MSNBC!!!!

Running the Rev. Wright stories over and over and over Friday Night and Saturday before the PRIMARY'S
BILL CLINTON has stated on April 4 in NC that the sate is a must-win for her campaign...  http://www.mcclatchydc.com/election2008/story/32788.html
I am sure the superdelegates will jump at the chance to follow the lead of Rush Limbaugh.
Rev Wright has become the Willy Horton that hangs around Sen Obama's neck. This is as much the work of the Clinton's as any one else, but how is it that no mention is made of the fact that the Clinton's availed themselves of Rev Wrights spiritual counseling when Bill had his difficulty? For more editorial cartoons about this and more see www.saintpeterii.com
Latest poll released today on Oregon: Rasmussen poll Obama 51%, Clinton 39%. This is a white state, giving the argument that Obama can't win that vote little validity.
It does not matter how much the big push is to smear Clinton this weekend, the fact remains is that Obama has shown such a poor judgment over how he handled the Wright matter that he is no longer a strong candidate against McCain.  Clinton is the only hope for the Democrats and they should really think about that question instead of acting so cowardly or bullying her out of pettiness.
This "horse-race" idea in North Carolina is sounding very much like a false narrative. I hope that news organizations are aware that if Obama blows her out there (+12) they will lose a lot of credibility. If you guys are knowingly reporting on shoddy polls...
still nothing on the fraud trial...huh
Go Fox! "fare and balanced".  I have become a Fox viewer.
You need to watch CNN on Sat. afternoon, MSNBC. They have helpful tips on how to use the refund checks, food price tips, and how to cut the use of gas, etc. You are OUT-OF-TOUCH.
why will no news talk about Paul vs. Clinton?!?!?
Funny how crowds "lean to" Obama. The crowd at NC JJ dinner booed Hillary's Bubba Gov. supporter. If Hillary is the nominee alot of us will take our bats and balls and go home. McCain and Clinton are too boring, or, as Obama puts it, represent politics as usual.  Obama Mama in the Midstate PA
I think Hillary will ultimately win the nomination and it is rightfully for her to do so, because she has had more in superdelegates, and if Florida and Michigan would be counted she would be the front runner as of now. I think it is wrong to leave those voters out, and it seems like cheating as well. It was not Clinton's fault those primaries were held early. I think it is wrong to put down Clinton's suggestion on the gas tax issue. Atleast it is an idea offered. It is better than doing nothing at all.Why does it take so many delegates to win for the nomination anyway?
