Clinton: Dems will be united

Posted: Saturday, May 03, 2008 1:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Hillary Clinton brought thousands of North Carolina Democrats to their feet last night by pledging her full support for Barack Obama, should he win the nomination.

Speaking at the state party’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Clinton immediately set the tone.

“We all know that what unites us as Democrats is so much greater than the differences, and the stakes are too high for us not to pull together as one team,” she said. “I will tell you this: If Sen. Obama is the nominee, you better believe I’ll work my heart out for him.”

Following a 30-second standing ovation that included “Obama” chants, Clinton then said she expected the same. “If I’m the nominee, I know Sen. Obama will do the very same for me, because it will be a united Democratic Party that goes on to victory in November,” she said.

That’s not to say Clinton did not draw contrasts with her rival. She said that voters have “had enough of the talk and the rhetoric,” and promised “real and immediate solutions to the problems facing hard-working Americans.” She also repeated her call for a gas tax holiday.

“If the choice is between making you pay the gas tax this summer and making the big oil companies pay out of their record profits, to me that choice is clear,” she said.

But she saved her strongest rhetoric for John McCain, saying, “he’s offering four more years of the same.”

“I respect Sen. McCain and his service to our nation, but he has the wrong ideas about America,” he said. “He looks at the hole that George Bush has dug us into and says, give me a bigger shovel.”

Clinton’s remarks last night were also notable for her praise for the Tar Heel State’s former senator.

“What a great fighter North Carolina and working Americans everywhere have in John Edwards,” she said. “John ran with compassion and conviction, and his courageous fight to end poverty is a fight I will see to the finish.”

She promised to appoint a “Cabinet-level position that will be solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it in America.” And she praised Elizabeth Edwards as a “a true champion for universal health care” and “for standing up against John McCain’s inadequate and radical health-care plan.”

Clinton concluded by praising to "stand strong" for working families as president, taking on special interests.

"It wont be easy, but there’s one thing you know about me, I am no shrinking violet," she said.

But there was one issue that Clinton would not confront.

“I’ve been all across this state listening, talking to you, and, yes, eating a little barbecue from time to time,” she said. “The only issue I won’t take a position on in this race is whether I prefer East or West. Some issues are just too controversial for me.”

NOTE: Talk about game-changers, actress Liz Taylor endorsed Clinton…again. Because of her undoubted sway among Hoosiers and those in the Research Triangle, Taylor felt it was her duty to release the following statement -- passed around by the Clinton campaign, by the way:

“It would be magnificent for our country if Senator Clinton won the votes, hearts and minds of the people in Indiana and North Carolina on Tuesday.  She’s a brilliant teacher and powerful leader.  We all know what she’s about.  We know what she isn’t.  Senator Clinton is not a flibbertijibbet.  She’s strong.  It’s also important for great leaders to have a sense of humor about themselves.  The future of our great country rests in the hands of the next president. Who sits in the Oval Office will be determined greatly by the citizens of Indiana and North Carolina. In my heart, I know they will choose wisely and they will choose well.”

For those wondering, Flibbertijibbet (n.) -- also spelled flibbertigibbet: "a silly, flighty person." Used in a sentence: "Liz Taylor IS a flibbertigibbet."

Earlier, Clinton got the support of Barbara Streisand. No word yet on where Liza Minelli’s support lies. Now that would be a game-changer. ...

Also... actress Julia Louis Dreyfus is backing Obama; she's upset with a women's advocacy group linked to anti-Obama robo-calls in North Carolina. Dreyfus had done a PSA for the group.

Why is Fox News the only network reporting on the "women's group" in NC making robo calls? They are Hillary supporters and target African American voters. They LIE to them about voter status and eligibility trying to discourage them from voting and in some cases telling them they are not eligible to vote. This is outrageous; The Clinton campaign has acknowledged this is true;yet the Pro-Clinton run media of the past 3 months have not reported on this. WHY?? Do the Clintons own some share of stock in these media outlets? Makes me wonder.

Barack Obama has run a respectable campaign and he has had to deal with not only the unscrupulous Clintons but ever since John McCain wrapped up the republican nomination; the republican party has joined forces with Clinton to try to prevent him from winning the democratic nomination. Again, make me wonder WHY? How corrupt is our government and what are they hiding.

If you live in NC or IN, please for the good of this country; vote for Obama and let's move on to the General Election

re Elizabeth Taylor, It takes one old panderer to know another one.
Just exactly what is Barack Obama trying to do?

(1) Overturn a culture of cynicism and institutional corruption dating back before any of us were born.

(2) Begin a new day of people comming together to build solutions to problems, instead of tearing each other apart for political gain.

(3) Begin the healing of the wounds of war, sickness and economic deprivation built up from the decades of cynicism and institutional corruption.

It is no wonder that all the forces of the darker side of our civilization have come forward to oppose him.

May God be with him.
I am sorry, but why didn't you mention Obama in that article on the Jeff. county dinner, only Clinton? I was slow to the media bias argument, but in I am becoming a daily reader of this site, and I am noting a lot of pro-Clinton or at least more neg. Obama stuff. Just my two cents.
funny how she finally gets a standing ovation only after mentioning she'll back Obama!  and then the crowd starts chanting "Obama"....awkward any?
I so wish MSNBC would start covering some real stories. While I appreciate a light hearted hand from time to time, this is ridiculous. Elizabeth Taylor? She can't pump gas or work a coffee machine, either. Quit feeding the lowest commond denominator and starve to death the imbeciles who vote based on the stars in their eyes and the instant gratification of this idiotic gas tax holiday.
The women's advocacy group with ties to Clinton, is trying to supress African American votes in North Carolina.  The caller Lamont Williams (a made up person) tells people their registration packets are in the mail.  Problem, registration deadlines have already passed.  They don't identify their group in the call, which is illegal.  They have gotten in trouble for doing this in other states right before primaries.  ABC is the only one who has done a story on this.  MSNBC couldn't possible break into thier wall to wall Rev. Wright coverage to report this.
You forgot to mention the crowd began chanting Obama.

You also didn't mention that the crowd booed Gov Easley (who endorsed Hillary).

The mainstream media, the GOP, McCain and Hillary are gunning for Obama because he = real change and they = more of the McSame.
Regardless of half-truth spun by the Clinton Machine to appease dellude and mislead, she can never get my vote.  Accountability. This is another lie, oops, I mean "Mispeaking" by Sen. Clinton.

I do not believe Clinton will do anything to help anyone other than herself should she not be the nominee.  She may tell that lie now, but convenience amnesia will set in and she will once again be guilty of mis-spoken words.

Sen. Clinton is accountable for the actions of her campain.  She has proven herself not so different from GOP.  A vote for Clinton is a Republican vote.
Although Hillary exhibited a rare sign of nobility in announcing she would support Obama should he be the nominee she also exhibited how out of touch she is with reality. Hillary said the gas tax holiday she proposes would be paid for by a windfall tax on oil companies, but those with common sense know the oil companies will just pass on the tax to consumers through higher prices at the pump... Net gain..zero

First Read,

Funny how you make it sound as if the crowd was cheering FOR Hrc because she said she would back Obama.

Anyone that watched the event saw that the crowd was NOT applauding HRC, they were shouting "O-BA-MA."

The crowd was OVERWHELMINGLY OBAMA.

HRC could hardly get the crowd to stop chanting "Obama" during HER speech.

Also, you are right that they Booed when she announced Easley's name.  Again, she could hardly get them to calm down so she could continue.

HRC had a much smaller group of supporters at this event.

The crowd went WILD when Obama was announced and throughout his speech.

Please report events accurately.

Thanks

"In addition, many of the superdelegates are like these white, liberal elites who are voting for Obama in the primaries. It makes them feel good about themselves for sticking with Obama.

They’ll feel guilty for caving into their fears about the country if they go Clinton. Don’t underestimate this issue with a party apparatus that was built on political correctness."

I don't know where to put this, and you probably won't post it, but I am dismayed by Chuck Todd's comments regarding the "liberal elites" who support Obama because its the politically correct thing to do (i.e. support a Black candidate.) I am a white woman working two jobs to support myself and I make $25,000 a year.  I support Obama because he is a remarkable individual who will make a stellar President. Does wanting to be proud of my President again make me one of the elite?
Really, I think the people most out f touch with the real world are the political pundits like Chuck Todd.
It is worth noting that the primary in NC and IN and ultimately the election hinge on a bet by two of the candidates that low information voters will believe their preposterous assertions that a "gas tax holiday" will help them pay their fuel bills this summer.
Anyone with a high school level education in economics will tell you a gas tax holiday will actually have the effect of raising gasoline prices. The consumer will simply never see a dime and the oil companies will make even higher profits. Not to mention the fact that it might put as many as 300.000 people out of work when the country is reeling from job losses or drive our debt even higher.

It is simply impossible to even suggest that such a measure could be introduced much less pass through congress before the end of the summer given nobody but McCain and Clinton support it in congress.

We are witnessing an epic and historic clash of old and new politics, one rooted in pander and deception of the past and one with the promise of truth and transparency.

My vote is for Senator Obama
i want a true American who belives in the pledge and putting his hand on his heart which produces meaning and this is what americans are all about do you want a President who is a muslin and will only say that the Reverand Wright is all of a sudden wrong on his belief which he has been on his side all the way until he started running for president.you know he is not condeming his actionss which Obama knows good and well he supports him but can not say that until he becomes our leader and he is a racist of whites and other groups of people how blind can you be and you know why a black senator lihe Shelia Jackson is backing Hillary read between the lines americans.
Actions speak louder than words Hillary. Your's, so far, are not encouraging.

On Liz Taylor's endorsement: It did not help her husband John Warner's campaign. Let's not go there about Taylor's judgement. OK let's go there. How many husbands has she had? Did'nt she support Micheal Jackson through all of his mess, until his last debacle?

I'll take Julia Louis-Dreyfus over Liz, and the narcisisstic Streisand, with her Howard Hughs size germaphobia.

The Dems definitely will not be united if Billary gets the nomination. The only way she will get it is because she has let the RUSH party get involved.
Rarely do I break from marching orders from HRC--

but I will NEVER vote for Obama.
PANDER< PANDER< PANDER..

I am Clinton the Pander bear
She means...When Obama is the nominee she hopes he will pick her as VP.  (Don't do it Obama!)

Liz Taylor is a flibbertigibbet...that's hillarious!
Who is she kidding, hillary couldn't unify a thanksgiving dinner. The only reason she's getting any backing at all from congressional members is because of bill's rolodex.Elitst don't play basketball folks,it's considered a poor's man game. Obama/Biden 08.
They will not be united - no way She's wrong!
Hillary is a joke. The Democrats will nly be united if she gets out very soon...6 weeks after she should have. I know SO many Democreats that are already switching to the GHOP, just because of the lack of DNC leadership, and the utter self-indulgent attitude of Billary. Nothing could hurt he Democrats more than her lingering in this contest...just to lose anyway.
Hillary "Republican" Clinton is talking a good game about working hard for Obama should he win but I'll wait to see if her actions match her words before I believe her.  Nice to see that Julia Dreyfus has seen the light about how negative the Clinton campaign has become.

Go Obama!
Drop out NOW.  And unite the party NOW, Hillary.
I am a Clinton supporter and if she had stayed positive like this from the beginning and pointed out differences I think her campaign would have been in a better position.  Her advisors really got her off to a bad start.
Actress julia louis dreyfus is correct to be upset with women's voices women's votes . . . a group, connected to Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams.

The group used to be about helping GOTV for single mom's and other women who often don't have a voice.

Now they've been running robo-calls in three States to surpress the vote.  North Carolina is just the latest, and the place where it was finally discovered *who* was behind the calls.

Forsaking the years of the suffragette and civil rights movements . . . the heroes who lived and died for our vote . . . the group moved from being advocates to being surpressors.

msnbc might want to cover this story.
TWO FACES OF HILLARY

When Bill Clinton, a husband, father, President, outspoken figure and spiritual confidante to Hillary betrayed her trust she didn't "disown" him.
Yet Hillary responded to Rev. Wright's remarks saying that she would leave his church, but  she didn't leave her husband over conduct much worse, being humiliated, offended and outraged.!
I don't think older white females, Hispanics, Jews, Catholics, and especially blue-collar workers will support Obama if he's the nominee... rather these groups will generally support McCain b/c he's closer to their side of the issues

If Hillary's the nominee, I'm sure African-Americans will support her b/c they wouldn't want to see McCain become president
