Obama praises Edwardses, talks unity

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
RALEIGH, N.C. -- As his rival for the nomination did earlier in the night, Obama praised John and Elizabeth Edwards at a Democratic Party dinner in their state Friday night.

"I want to make sure that I say a special thanks to John and Elizabeth Edwards," he began. "Because they really set the tone for this president race with their courage, with their ideas, with their passion and their commitment to working people and to making sure that we focus our attention on not just the haves, not even the have littles and want mores but the have nots in America, and I'm so grateful for their contribution, and I am looking forward to working with them in the next administration to make sure that we are doing everything we can to deliver on the full promise of America."

Both Democrats have courted Edwards' endorsement, but he is not expected to declare his support before Tuesday's election.

The Illinois senator also echoed Clinton's remarks about the party being unified in November.

"If Hillary Clinton were the nominee, I would support her in a heartbeat," he said. "And I know that if I am the nominee then she will support me, and the reason is because, although we are campaigning vigorously, and we have serious differences in both policy and approach -- one thing that I can say, is that our differences pale in comparison to our differences with the other party."

These kinds of unity-focused comments are not new -- they are a part of both candidates' stump speeches -- and it is surprising to hear such remarks at a Democratic Party dinner. Still, the comments were worth noting, because their words were so similar and because the overall tone here was in real contrast to the final days of the Pennsylvania campaign, which were marked by increasingly bitter attacks. Since losing that contest, Obama has since taken to saying on the stump that he wanted to get back to his early commitment to running a positive campaign.

In what was largely a typical stump speech, he again expressed his opposition to the gas tax holiday and reminded the audience that he had been against the Iraq war from the beginning and that he had the right judgment to answer the "3 am" call.

Many of his fans in the crowd stood or waved Obama signs throughout the roughly 35-minute remarks.

Just what exactly is Barack Obama trying to do?

(1) Overturn a culture of cynicism and institutional corruption dating back before any of us were born.

(2) Begin a new day of people comming together to build solutions to problems, instead of tearing each other apart for political gain.

(3) Begin the healing of the wounds of war, sickness and economic deprivation built up from the decades of cynicism and institutional corruption.

It is no wonder that all the forces of the darker side of our civilization have come forward to oppose him.

May God be with him.
that's it dems. united we stand. divided we fall!!!
See the video excerpt of the Jefferson Jackson dinner where Hillary is interrupted by chants of "Obama, Obama" by most of the crowd.

Efforts were made to drown the crowd out by turning the music up full blast, but they couldn't stifle it all.

I'm waiting for the video of the crowd booing Gov Easley (who endorsed Hillary). That was a hoot too.

I was told by someone who was there that after Hillary finished speaking, she had a "pep rally" in the parking lot outside of the dinner.  This is unheard of for the Jefferson Jackson dinner, it is a fund raiser and not a candidate rally.
When the smoke has cleared the Edwards will have a friend in Obama. John is young, smart and would be the best Labor or Health Secretary to bolster the new Administration.
CONSIDER THIS.....
BUSH H.W. VP           1980---1984

BUSH H.W. PRES.        1988---1892

CLINTON W.J.           1992---2000

BUSH G.W.              2000---2008 (24 YRS 2 FAMILIES)

CLINTON H.R.           2008---2016 (32 YRS 2 FAMILIES)

In a Nation of over 300 million citizens, is this the
best we can do...?

NEPOTISM>def..."patronage bestowed or favoritism shown on
the basis of family relationship, as in business and
politics."
The first half was a typical stump speech but the end had a very interesting riff of the "It's my patriotism" issue where he pushed back against Wright and flag pins and that part was very new and powerful.
I am surprised you didn't pick up on it
You didn't mention his comments at the end. His closing comments were (partly) new; focusing on patriotism and his background. Have to say it moved me....

Elizabeth likes Hillarys approach on Health Care. I to am a cancer survivor and just had second surgery. I hope I can see Hillary as first Madam President.I cannt though see John Edwards with the Wright debacle and more comeing back a plan that leaves so many out.Hillary does believe in what John Edwards tried and I hope still tries to fix and that is close to his heart.Hillary has so many Vet endorsements cause it means so much to her. and she has worked and is working so hard to help our brave men and women.I am proud of her for so many things she has done.Obama has done a lot of damage to the party and country. I hope he would work as hard to bring it togeather should Hillary be the nom.
If we Dems are as stupid as the GOP believes we are, we will eat each other, rather than honor our Democratic ideals. Let's put our differences aside, and unite.

The reason this primary has been so divisive, and contentious, is because we are almost desperatly passionate about the historical significance of our respective candidate's potential of overcoming the oppression that has shut us out of the Presidency.

Let us leave this in G-D's hands. Let us accept His Will.

Let us unite when we have our candidate.
Has anyone put it together that the media has an interest in prolonging the 'drama' of this campaign? It's kind of like the O.J. trial -- guaranteed grist for the  24/7 cable folks for months, don't you think? So, maybe their predictions, their forecasts, their obsessions with Rev. Wright, lapel pins and the like, are all about sowing the kinds of doubts in the minds of the uncommitted voters that would cause Hillary to pick up some steam and----LENGTHEN THE RACE! How dull for these pundits if the thing were to be wrapped up Tuesday night by Obama. No more fun -- no excited predictions about a tumultuous Democratic convention, about superdelegates, about 'the math' and all the other horse-race stats they've focused on. No fun, at all.
I hope the American people realize what's really important here --- let's not let the media shape our values, our understanding of what's important and what's not. Let's use some critical thinking and do what's best for the Democratic Party and the United States. Elect the person with judgment, temperament, commitment to raising up those who lack opportunities, and restoring our image in the world. Barack Obama for a new America!
Obama is a copy cat. He heard what Hillary said last night and wants to copy her. He's been doing that for the last 15 months. All he does is copy. He has no defined character.
I suspect Edwards will not commit because he is leaning towards Hillary and would not want to be on the losing side if she does not get the nomination. Is this political strategy or a sign of weakness? Irrespective, Obama will win NC so he can stay on the fence and wait for the convention.
Hmm... Obama's remarks sound really similar to what Hillary said Fri night at the dinner.....

this reminds me of how Obama answered most of his debate questions:  "I agree w/ Hillary on this.... Hillary's right about this"

and here I thought Obama doesn't like to debate
Obama and Clinton both know Obama is the Democratic nominee. It's nice to hear her play nice, for a change, for she has lived in this fantasy world for way too long!

Congrats Lois on being the first negative post on this thread.  There was a civilized conversation going on until that point.  Did you not get the memo?  sem, va (Sent Saturday, May 03, 2008 2:15 PM) said it best - that's it dems. united we stand. divided we fall!!!

Lois I would like to hear from you which of Senator Clinton's policy positions convinced you to support her, not negativity about Senator Obama.
Norm Whitzell, Salinas, Puerto Rico (Sent Saturday, May 03, 2008 2:16 PM)

The tie of the Bush and Cheney to Washington goes back to the Nixon administration. GHW Bush - Ambassador to the UN - 1971.  It is amazing how many of Nixon/Ford administration are / were members of the current Bush administration.  Wonder why conservative radio and tv hosts want Clinton!!!?
Here's hoping that Obama can win North Carolina & Indiana and force Clinton out finally. It is time to concentrate on beating John McCain. Our country cannot withstand another four years of George W Bush's failed policies (that's what a McCain win would mean.)
