Obama's closing argument

Posted: Saturday, May 03, 2008 2:49 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Obama delivered what his campaign billed as his closing argument at a high school here this afternoon, focusing on helping working families and changing the way politics is done in Washington.

The Illinois senator, who was joined on stage at the beginning of the event by his wife and young daughters, also had some new, tougher language on the gas tax holiday Clinton and McCain have proposed.

His speech summed up all the themes he has been touching on in recent days: the economic challenges facing Indiana and the country. He said this election was about reclaiming the American Dream for all Americans.

"The challenges facing people across Indiana and across this country are growing by the day,” he said. “I’m not telling you anything that you don’t know. You don’t have to turn on the news or follow the stock tickers or wait for all the economists and politicians to agree on what is or is not a recession to know that our economy is in serious trouble.”

He told voters they would have to choose someone else if they wanted more politics as usual, without mentioning his rival by name, despite constantly linking Clinton to that kind of politics on the stump.

"This year, you have a choice,” he said. "If you want to take another chance on the same kind of politics we’ve come to know in Washington, there are other candidates to choose from. But I still believe we need to fundamentally change Washington if we want change in America.

Polls show a tight race in the Hoosier State heading into Tuesday’s contests and the Obama campaign is hoping to show it can win over not just the young, college-educated, upscale and black voters that he usually performs well with, but also the white, working class voters, who have overwhelmingly voted for Clinton in recent contests.

The Illinois senator has spent the last several days holding town halls and smaller events, like lunches and roundtables in an attempt to connect with these voters. He’s held just three big-crowd rallies -- two in North Carolina and one in Indiana.

He touched on his middle class tax cut proposal, his plans for healthcare, investments in infrastructure and creating five million green jobs, which is incidentally the same number of green-collar jobs Clinton promises. And he used the gas tax holiday issue to portray himself as a new kind of politician who would not play political games to win an election. He noted the experts and editorials that support him on the issue and said Clinton had resorted to using a lobbyist for Shell Oil to explain how the holiday would be good for consumers.

“This is not about getting you through the summer, it’s about getting elected,” Obama said of McCain and Clinton. “This is what passes for leadership in Washington -- phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems. Now Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain have been using this idea to make the argument that I’m somehow “out of touch.” Well, let me tell you -- only in Washington can you get away with calling someone out of touch when you’re the only one who thinks that 30 cents a day is enough to help people who are struggling in this economy. Let me tell you what I think. I think the American people are smarter than Washington gives us credit for.”

The Clinton campaign took objection to Obama's opposition to the gas tax.

“Considering that Sen. Obama voted to suspend the gas tax three times when gas cost less than $2 a gallon and has an energy lobbyist chairing his Indiana campaign, it's hard to take his latest criticisms very seriously," writes Clinton spokesman Phil Singer. "Senator Obama wants Americans to pay the gas tax but Senator Clinton thinks the big oil companies should pay it this summer.”

It's true that Obama voted for a gas tax holiday while state senator, but, as we've noted before, he also voted against extending them as he said he saw little benefit to drivers as a result.

Obama walks a fine line when it comes to defending himself against his rivals' attacks without sinking into the kind of negativity that goes against the "new politics" he's said he wants his campaign to be about.

He was introduced by Amtrak machinist Mike Fischer, whose house Obama and wife Michelle visited this week for lunch. While there, they discussed kitchen-table concerns. Fischer said he made up his mind about Obama that day, calling the couple “regular people” who grew up dealing with the same kind of circumstances as he and the audience.

"This guy is not a typical politician who will tell you anything to get your votes; Barack is the real deal,” Fischer said. “Here’s what I want to say about Barack Obama: he listens; he understands; he is sincere and he has a good sense of humor.”

The senator closed his speech by invoking another politician, who gained fame in his youth, to whom he has been compared, Robert Kennedy. Kennedy said 40 years ago in his Indiana campaign and Obama repeated, “Income and education and homes do not make a nation. Nor do land and borders. Shared ideals and principles, joined purposes and hopes -- these make a nation.  And that is our great task.”

He also spoke about the generations of past Americans who had fought for the opportunities that he and others enjoyed today and who made it possible for someone like him to have a shot at the presidency.

"That’s why the only way a black man named Barack Obama, who was born in Hawaii, and started his career on the streets of Chicago, is standing before you today,” Obama said, “and that’s the only way I can win this race -- if you decide that you’ve had enough of the way things are; if you decide if you decide that this election is bigger than flag pins or sniper fire or the comments of a former pastor -- bigger than the differences between what we look like or where we come from or what party we belong to.”

He urged voters in Indiana and North Carolina to choose him and to work to get out the vote on his behalf if they wanted the election to be about jobs and health care and good schools.

“In the face of all cynicism, all doubt, all fear, I ask you to remember what makes a nation -- and to believe that we can once again make this nation the land of limitless possibility and unyielding hope; the place where you can still make it if you try,” he said to rousing applause.

Obama's closing argument should be:  "I've decided to drop out of the race for the good of the party b/c I've realized I have serious problems w/ blue-collar workers in swing states in Ohio and PA, which means I cannot beat John McCain in Nov"
Wow, Hillary continues the "bitter" drama to the end. Well, Mrs. Clinton, considering that your husband was paid $800,000 by the Columbian government to lobby on behalf of CAFTA, should we believe you when you say you do not support CAFTA? And BTW, aren't you due in court on fraud charges soon? So why should we believe anything that you say?
Obama's closing argument is about the gas tax?  This is why he can't close the sale with the American people.  It's not his position on the gas tax that is preventing people from buying what he is selling, it is his preacher and white voters' lack of identification with him that is the issue.

Obama missed a key opportunity to close the sale in Pennsylvania when he responded to the Wright controversy citing his white grandmother, but for privacy reasons did not bring her out to meet the American public.  From what I've heard, she woud be a resonant figure with the white working-class voters he so desperately needs to make inroads with.

Yes, I understand the hesitation to bring her out into the limelight. But come on, he's got the money to hire professional handlers who can run a very tightly controlled media event.  What is going to get these voters to move to him?  The Obama campaign hand-selected photo of Barack with his white grandmother accompanying a further denunciation of Wrights comments as offensive to him.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk or 'playing the race card', but well.. that's what he needs to do.
Yes, Obama will give his Rezko contributions back if Bill Clinton and George Bush agree to give theirs back as well. He will also stop hanging around Ayers if Bill Clinton agrees to resend his 2 pardons of the Weatherstone Underground members that he pardoned before he left office. Are you serious? Ayers was charged, but not convicted, unlike Bill Clinton, who lied under oath about Monica Lewinsky, and was impeached as a result.
Hillary08,
WTF are you trying to say?  You must be one of the high school dropouts voting for Hillary.
Good job Obama, What makes a nation, we American needs hop, and God. This is not about Black or White, this is about helping people.

We are all American and God bless all of us.

I am for Obama this time.
I'm so glad at least one candidate is intelligent enough to see the gas-tax charade for what it really is.  It's insulting that others think the voters are so foolish as to see that slick move as help, rather than the hurt it would cause us.  Foolish.  If a candidate so poorly understands economics that they think this fraud would help us, we don't need them in the White House, because they don't know enough in this time of financial crisis.  Thanks Obama, for telling the truth here.
OBAMA IS A MAN THAT I WOULD BE PROUD TO CALL MR PRESIDENT.
Obama gets points for sticking up for bhis ideological principles, but the argument against the gas tax cut is a big time loser with cash-strapped working and middle class voters. That's something any strategist worth his salt would have told him to drop immediately.

Brilliant. Its about time he stands up and defends himself and shows us all he won't be pushed around. Everyone has limits, it seems he has reached his.
There are significant deficiencies in Obama's message: In the interest of a "nice" campaign he avoids putting the "bitter" truths in front of the American people.  We need someone on the same trajectory as Obama, but with more "gonads"  to be able to speak truth to power.. the "POWER" in this case being the American People!
Here are the omissions as I see them:
1. The BUSH-MCCAIN-CLINTON war (also called the War in Iraq) has directly cost our treasury One Trillion Dollars!  That, spread out over 125 million taxpayers comes out to $8000 per Taxpayer!  That's the money that has been just burnt on our behalf!  Of course we could have decided to give that wasted money to our 5 million unemployed.. in which case, each unemployed fellow citizen of ours would have received the "paltry" sum of $200,000 per taxpayer!
And Hillary-McCain want to do what now?  give us a "holiday" on our "gas tax" and save us $30!!!!  And some of our fellow citizens are willing to buy that BS uncritically!  Barnum and Bailey were wrong about a fool being born every minute.  Should have said a "moron" born every minute!

3. The Clinton-BUSH-McCain War was a bloody piece of theatre that devastated a country and alienated the majority of mankind. It allowed attention to be diverted from the abject failure of two administrations (Clinton and Bush) in responding to the threat of terror (Tanzanian embassy, Mogadishu, Cole bombing... the list is much longer than that), leading ultimately to 9/11. Rather than confess their failure and get out of the way, they launched this war against a country that had helped us curb the Shiite menace from Iran, and was no threat to us.. simply to create the illusion of doing something!

3. In the War Against Terror, the Terrorists run free to do their mischief, while our Liberties and Rights have been severely curtailed, including the abominable suspension of Habeas Corpus... a right established after a 1000 years of civilization in Britain, has been deftly removed at the stroke of the Presidential pen.  And this while the cream of our youth is shedding its blood to "preserve our freedom"!

The American people need to wake up, and the problem is that no one, includinng Barack Obama, has the guts to deliver the wakeup call/bad news.  We still need a leader with the courage to say "The Emperor has no clothes!"

It is too bad that we will have to wait another 4 years for someone with that courage to emerge out of our political process.
Barack would be healing for our country, he radiates not only truth and goodness, but also advanced intelligence.....such as we have not seen in many years.
It's boiled down to this, Obama inspires me to believe that maybe we can actually change our country through a Presidential election.  Afer 8 years of GWB and after having the 2000 election stolen from the Democratic Party, I've been very skeptical over voting for any politician.  Obama's message of change and his clear stances against politics that divide us instead of uniting us and his opposition to clear pandering from the Clinton and McCain camps, it really makes me believe maybe we have found a new type of politician and if he's elected, maybe future presidents will be held to similar standards of ethics, honor, and truthfulness.
Chuck, please tell uswhy MSNBC felt the need to have Dan Abrams host a one hour documentary about Obama and Rev. Wrights relationship? Why don't MSNBC do a special about Sen. McCain and his relationship with Rev. Haage or Sen. Clinton relationship with the cult-like congregation called "The Fellowship".

It seems that the media is so obessed with Rev. Wright that even if the man is found dead, they'll still be talking about him.
OBAMA / PELOSI

What a ticket....has anyone heard the sound of a landslide...It's arrived....

Yes We CAN!!!!!
Awesome speech. Go Barack! We are counting on you.

PS. Hilary08, please take a writing class!
He's right:

40% of our oil isn't imported, we provide it to ourselves.

The next highest % of oil we get in the US comes from Canada.

After Canada, then it's Mexico.

The 4th highest % comes from Saudi Arabia, then Venezuela.

I'll admit, after researching this, I've come across different data after Canada, but % wise, it's minimal.

There is no logical reason that oil costs so much per barrel today other than the weak dollar and commodity speculators driving up the price due to the stock market woes.

Unfortunately, when the Fed cuts interest rates, the Wall Street people seem to like it, however at the same time it also weakens the dollar even more. Since oil is linked to the US dollar,  the weaker the US dollar is the more US dollars it takes to buy that barrel of oil.

We’re in a quagmire.  The only way out is to change our philosophies.

A “gas tax holiday” would be the worst thing that could happen to the American people.  We need to discourage consumption.  The only way to get gas prices to start going down is to limit demand.

Although the way to get around all this is extremely unpopular and most likely unachievable, we need to stop consuming gas in excess.  At the very least, we need to mandate some kind of consumption laws.

The actual solution is to increase the tax on oil and effectively force demand down.  Take the newly created tax money and give it back to the people in the form of jobs, jobs, jobs.

The resultant outcome being a real stimulus program that circulates that money back into the economy.

If we can get the American people to strike (boycott/extremely limit their use of oil/gasoline), then Washington would have no choice than to finally take action.

We could effectively shutdown the whole worlds economy by taking a stand against “Big Oil“.

Americans did this a couple hundred years ago in Boston.  They called it the “Boston Tea Party”.

We now need to have a "Texas Oil Tea Party"!
Barack is the leader whose time has come.  Look how is has handled all of the media attention, and has grown with grace.  It will be Americas lost and the worlds if we let ourself get side tracked with these silly distraction.

Dems Unite for November Victory
That was nice of "First Read" to post Obama's stump speech for him.  But, then again, "First for Obama" is always going out of their way to give him favorable coverage.
Obama voted 3 times to suspend the Gas tax when gas cost less than $2 dollars a gallon -- now tat it's almost $4 dollars a gal. he is screaming against it, just because Hillary wants to cut us a break.  THIS GUY IS A JOKE!
Obama will go down in history as one of the great presidents.
TO CKR, YOU MEAN THAT $30 SAVINGS OVER THE SUMMER IS BETTER THAN NOTHING,  CKR THAT WON'T EVEN BUY ME FOOD FOR A WEEK, WE ARE A STRUGGLING FAMILY OF 4 WHO MADE $65,0000 THIS YEAR,  WE USE TO MAKE $120,000 6 YEARS AGO,  I HAVE ENOUGH SENSE TO REALIZE THAT $30 OVER A 3 MONTH PERIOD IS ONLY .30 CENTS A DAY, THAT DOESN'T EVEN BUY YOU A CUP OF COFFEE AT MCDONALDS.  GET REAL.
Matt,

The video was shown on CNN.com live. Check and see if it's still there
OBAMA / PELOSI

What a ticket....has anyone heard the sound of a landslide...It's arrived....

Yes We CAN!!!!!
Are there still people out there dwelling on Wright? Get over it!!! Are we gonna let some nutcase overshadow the real problems in this country? Almost 50 dead in Iraq this past month and news media talking about Wright!!
Move on people.... Obama 08
Now if only voters and independants will make the vote count at the polls unlike in Penn where poll numbers said one thing, then actual votes said another.

Go Barack!!  '08
I well remember Bobby Kennedy who came within a heart-beat of the Democratic nomination and was a sure bet to win the presidency over Nixon in the 1968 election. I find that the only thing that Obama does not have in common with Bobby is his ethnic background.
tell me how can Hillery come up with a speech like this?.and how can you and CNN(let alone Fox)try to destroy him.Iam not american but you will fools if you dont elect him.finalley i want to ask you how can you and youe colleges sleep at night with that hateret for a man like this.
Not this time Senator McCain...not this time Sen. Clinton. America deserves better, we deserve a chance to change the mindset that has delivered us to this place we no longer know or understand...this is not the America I grew up in. It's time to turn the page on the politics of old and begin a new chapter..if not for myself, if not for my neighbor then for the children of this nation who deserve better.
Indiana??...Black, White, Hispanic, Asian....where you at?? It's time to close the deal for Obama NOW!

Let's give Hilary the answer to her question, and that answer is Tuesday, 6th 2008......

Meet us in Indiana Hilary Clinton!
Obama is a very courageous man who seems to really love his country ,it would really be a shame that all Americans cannot unite around this man and make their country as great as it was ment to be
For those of you in Indiana and North Carolina who are planning on voting for Clinton simply because she "plans on doing something, even if its just $30.00" please be aware that both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have declared this idea Dead On Arrival. There will be no bills introduced to suspend the gasoline tax nor will there be one introduced to tax the windfall profits of the oil companies. In other words, McCain and Clinton are offering you something that is GUARANTEED never to happen. If you fall for it, I pity you.
The gas tax relief is not worth the 30 cents a day it will save most Americans. To me 30 cents a day is not worth several people's jobs, jobs that are their livelihood, jobs that pay their rent, feed their  families etc. I am not willing to get 30 cents to sacrifice the livelihood of others. Do unto others.... This brings to question, are Hillary and McCain really for the working class and if so, why are they willing to sacrifice the jobs that keep our infrastructure repaired. Not only is Hillary drinking shots and beer, I think she is drinking her own bath water.
I was insulted that anyone could think I was so desperate and had so few morals my vote could be purchased for 38 cents a day/or up to $70 over 3 mths.
If I were a superdelegate today, I would line behind Obama.  If you can't be convinced by his stand in the gas tax debate between him and Senators Clinton and McCain, I don't know what else will convince you.  Like Fischer said, the man is the real deal.
