If Barack Obama truly wanted to bring the political discussion back to the critical issues facing America, why did he not take up the challenge from Hillary Clinton to a face-to-face debate, without press moderators, before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries?  Hitting the basketball court to shoot hoops, taking the family on a picnic, and having what amounted to a one-hour free ad on Meet the Press are hardly impressive.  Hillary Clinton’s gasoline/energy policies are very complex.  It would have been more informative and fair for voters to hear both sides of this debate from both candidates instead of Tim Russert’s simplistic, questioning response, “It’s a pander?” and Barack Obama’s easy reply, “Yes.”  Instead of debating his opponent face-to-face and demonstrating his leadership and experience, he fled to take cover. Instead of Barack and Hillary with no moderator, we got Barack and Tim with no Hillary.

Hillary "Republican" Clinton is out of touch with reality so she has little room to speak of Obama being out of touch with anyone.  Just more putrid garbage from a losing campaign as she has become Mccain's best ally.

I just saw Obama on meet the press and now I understand why he calls this gas tax plan a gimic... to save 30 cents a day for a grand total of $28 for the entire summer is Pathetic.... And on top of that Obama said that this gas tax could not happen this summer "2008" because Bush would never sign the bill which makes sense to me.....

S oshe wants to tax the bill oil companies?  WHEN? while Mr. Veto is still in Office?  Let's ... she wants to give the gas holiday when?  This summer?   And somehow in the so-called "do nothing" congress she will help pass a law that taxes someone else?  Just because the tax holiday was McCain's suggestion (can't people remember that?) does it mean the Republicans themselves will support it? What would possibly keep the oil companies from driving up the cost of gas to make up their losses to the higher taxes, especially given the reduction in gas tax? They'd take the federal highways' share immediately, and raise prices beyond that - claiming that the windfall profits tax forced them to.

Two more things about it -

1. It won't pass in the 20 days left before Memorial Day, and couldn't under the rosiest of scenarios - even if it had support from more than two Senators who haven't been around the Senate for a year. And, it won't pass without George Bush favoring it ... how does he feel about a windfall profits tax on oil?

2. Pass the windfall profits tax anyway, but use the revenue to lead development of alternative fuels.

Ralph in Chicago is quite correct. There's no chance either McCain or Hillary's proposals would make it through the Senate, let alone the House or the Shrub. Pelosi's against it, the Shrub's against it. The Dems would shut McCain down either directly or put an amendment in to add the windfall tax, while the GOP would put an amendment to strip the windfall tax from Hillary's version. And in the end, McCain loses on party lines at best, and Hilary loses worse because Obama would show up and put a statement in, and his supporters would vote against it as well, along with the GOP.

Not to mention that today is May 4. May 26 is Memorial Day, the start of the holiday period they want. There's no chance they'd railroad that through the Senate, especially with the Iraq supplemental sitting there to come up this week or next. That doesn't even mention the GOP forcing 60-vote margins just to proceed to debate a bill, then forcing another vote to close debate on a bill, and making them take the full 30 hours of debate in each case...even if in the end the GOP votes for it.

Hillary's problem is this. She's playing a game for superdelegates, because she can't take the pledged delegate lead. Her best argument for supers is the popular vote lead, which she can't take without a variety of convoluted metrics. But by throwing out this gas tax holiday argument, I think she's showing those supers that she doesn't know what she's doing and isn't paying attention to experts, and thus is hurting herself. Because two others against her proposal? The governor of NC and some former president named Clinton. She's on a ledge and her only company is the GOP nominee...not a good place to be.

Better yet give keith oberman some of these posts, he's not afraid to tell the american people the truth.

How about we distinguish how they will beat John McCain, because right now he's the lumbering turtle in this rabbit race and to be effective in November both candidates must finds ways to distinguish themselves by beating *him* down.

Obama doesn't want to overturn Roe V Wade and bring coat-hangers into the bathrooms of our daughters, mothers and wives.

McCain is the real enemy, I am cool with passionate debate but I know come November, I will vote for *anyone* rather than John McCain.

Both candidates do it for me.
