Hillary on ABC

Posted: Sunday, May 04, 2008 1:19 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
INDIANAPOLIS -- Hillary Clinton said this morning that she does not regret her strong language about an attack on Iran, and also slammed the “elite opinion” of her proposal for a gas tax holiday.

During an hour-long appearance on ABC’s This Week that was staged as a voter town hall, Clinton also said that “we should move on” from the discussion of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and turned the tables on host George Stephanopoulos when challenged over her positions on trade.

But the lengthiest exchange was about Iran. In an interview that aired on the day of the Pennsylvania primary, Clinton said that the United States “would be able to totally obliterate” Iran if they launched a strike against Iran. Host George Stephanopoulos asked the New York senator if she regretted the strong tone, which Obama compared to George W. Bush.

“Why would I have any regrets?” she said. “I'm asked a question about what I would do if Iran attacked our ally, a country that many of us have a great deal of, you know, connection with and feeling for, for all kinds of reasons. And, yes, we would have massive retaliation against Iran. I don't think they will do that, but I sure want to make it abundantly clear to them that they would face a tremendous cost if they did such a thing.”

She also said that a “vigorous diplomatic engagement” should be the first strike, appealing to the “rational” Iranian people who are at odds with their government. “I don't think it's time to equivocate about what we would do,” she said.

Issue No. 1 this morning was what has become the biggest policy flashpoint of the two-week campaign in North Carolina and Indiana -- her plan to impose a gas tax holiday, offset by a tax on oil companies. Clinton was asked if she could produce any economist who disagreed with the overwhelming consensus of experts and lawmakers who have questioned the plans merits.

“I think we've been for the last seven years seeing a tremendous amount of government power and elite opinion basically behind policies that haven't worked well for the middle class and hard-working Americans,” she said. “I'll tell you what -- I'm not going to put my lot in with economists, because I know if we get it right, if we actually did it right, if we had a president who used all the tools of the presidency, we would design it in such a way that it would be implemented effectively.”

Her answer reflected increasing efforts by the Clinton camp to place her on the side of middle-class voters against the views of those, including Obama himself, who they suggest are out of tough. She criticized “this mind-set where somehow elite opinion is always on the side of doing things that really disadvantage the vast majority of Americans.”

More than 200 Hoosiers, chosen without input from the campaign, were invited to the Indianapolis hotel to be part of the event. A smaller number of North Carolinians participated via satellite. Michelle Skinner, who was one of seven members of the audience who got to pose a question, asked Clinton if the Jeremiah Wright controversy should still be a part of the discussion, or if people should “move on.”

"Well, we should definitely move on,” she said. “And we should move on because there's so many important issues facing our country that we have to attend to.” But she did concede that “there's no doubt they talk about it.”

Clinton also faced questions about agriculture, the economy, the possibility of an Obama/Clinton ticket, and trade issues. On the latter, Clinton enlisted host Stephanopoulos.

"George and I actually were against NAFTA,” she said, noting he worked in the Clinton White House. “I'm talking about him in his previous life, before he was an objective journalist and didn't have opinions about such matters.”

Here's the answer. In order for this "proposal" to make any practical sense, the Congress would have to pass a bill that would have to be signed into law by the president to suspend the gas tax. Hillary has said she would pay for it with a windfall profits tax on big oil. The reality is that Speaker Pelosi has already stated that no gas tax bill would be debated so the issue is Dead On Arrival. As for the windfall profits tax, do you really think a president that is in bed with big oil will sign a windfall profits tax into law?
So, not only do economist agree that this is bad policy, it is something that would impossible to put into effect for this summer, hence the "pandering" charges.
I'm glad to know HRC got equal time to the Obama interview on MTP. Just to point out what a lying craven whiner this guy is, he said early in the interview that he would be happy to debate any of his opponents on the issues. Easy to say but when confronted w/a real opportunity to debate in Indiana, he wimped out.
There is a lot that is good abt this guy but he is so not ready for prime time!
HRC's stock in trade is knowing her stuff.
As for the commentary above about who would be more effective in the Middle East, I hate to tell Geoff but Obama has ZERO cred there! On the other hand HRC is highly respected [as is John McCain].
Your reporting is very one sided....I don't understand.  I read this for the blogs...I no longer watch MSNBC.  CNN is much better at being unbiased.  Your coverage of Wright has been very disappointing....beating a dead horse.  Last I looked Wright was NOT running for president.  Only Obama/McCain/Clinton.  Where is the reporting on Paul vs Clinton???????
I really would like Congress to do something(NOW, NOW,NOW)that will help out the middle class and not wait till next year.  The rebate check will help but I don't think that it will be enough to pull the average American up.

I can't see that 18 cents a gallon is going to help me much pay for $4.29 a gallon diesil so I will probably not be going anywhere this summer.

We need more that talk, we deed ACTION NOW.
I poured a glass of wine, got my comfy pillow, and got a cigarette ready (I'm old, it's ok) just in case, and sat down to watch my DVR tape of Hillary's interview with George. I still have to ask my more forgiving husband to watch it to make sure she was as arrogant and illogical as I thought she was, but there were three things that stood out for me. Now I am an Obama supporter, so I might not be the most objective person, but here goes.

Statement 1: Those elitist economists, what the hell do they know!!! Take that NYT's and fave dream date Krugman! You elitist you! Notice she didn't mention her Shell Oil person who did support her plan!

Statement 2: In the last 7 years, the wealth went to the top 10% and that is so unfair! Uhhhh. Hill, aren't you and Bill one that reaped the rewards of the system? My God, you have made 107 million, much of it from China, Colombia, and Dubai. Doesn't this bother anyone in the press?

Statement 3:She has spent her whole life helping minorities. Excuse me? If I hear that bit about the Children's Defense Fund, where she worked for less than a year, I might swear off tv forever; and then she joined a law firm and did not work on any civil rights cases while in Arkansas, and also didn't speak up against union-busting WalMart while serving on their board...am I missing something?

I will obliterate Iran if they attack Israel, or Saudi Arabia, or Turkey, or who knows?...well I can't even say anything more about that baby. On that alone, Indiana and NC should run for cover and vote Obama!

*VOTE SMART! VOTE PATRIOTIC! VOTE HILLARY CLINTON!

If the Dems fail to nominate Hillary, vote McCain in NOvember. Country first, party second.

PEACE!

You mean to tell me that you dont mind your president telling you lie after lie after lie....Hillay supporter are sick and this is why this country is where it is now in the gutter.... People dont care about there own country when they elect the same type of politician to office every 4 years.... Some people want a different type of President... Someone who will tell it like it is and not sell us a dream(Clintons)... Obama is my choice and yours.. He admits his mistake and learns from...The Clintons cant make that claim....Sad!!!!
Our understanding is that when people turn to the networks for _news_, they should get objective news reporting and journalism. That fact that Clinton could make the statement that "George and I actually were against NAFTA"...“I'm talking about him in his previous life, before he was an objective journalist and didn't have opinions about such matter..." insults the intelligence of the American people and the journalism profession. The dishonesty preys on  people being clueless about the facts. George Stephanopoulos was the de facto press secretary for Pres. Bill Clinton when he signed NAFTA into law in 1993 - he is NOT an objective journalist. Hillary Clinton was holding meetings with business interests cheerleading NAFTA and NAFTA passed with a _Democratic majority_ in Congress. Now she suggests she and George were _against_ NAFTA?!? How long can this continue? For truth's sake, our media needs to grow a pair and STAND UP and confront these blatant lies head on!! The viablility of our democracy relies on truthful reporting by our media. If doctors in our nation performed at the level of professionalism that folks in our media are exhibiting today - tabloid journalism at best - our mortality rate would be worse than that of a third world nation!

Clinton's "obliteration" statement about Iran is troubling, even worse than McCain's "bomb, bomb Iran" talk. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died in a war initiated by the United States on the false claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMD). These are human beings like ourselves, with children, families and loved ones. And now we have Sen. Clinton threatening to "obliterate" Iran with the implicit threat of use of WMDs!! I thought she was the same person who said months ago (a) in chiding Obama said someone running for president should not tell the world all their thoughts with regards to foreign policy and (b) said that she didn't like to engage in hypotheticals - why didn't she follow her own advice and refuse to answer the hypothetical question?
Obama was the media favorite when it didn't seem like he had a snowball's chance in hell of winning. But now it seems like a reality and the "liberal" media really aren't ready for that. They will ride that filly to the glue factory before they give that man a fair shot at it. She can lie, cheat and steal if she wanted to they will still make it out be something decent.

If  Obama wins NC by anything less than 20% they'll make it out to be a loss unlike HRC's eeking out a less than 10% win in PA which they make seem like she totally shut him  out. The media for all their claims of being ready for change are really not. Look at the faces of the decision makers in the media? Their faces look more like Hillary's than Barack's and they're not ready to change that yet. They say they are they like to think they are but they're really not. They're all for those who look like Sen. Obama to be MVP in the NBA, NFL or MLB but NOT leader of the free world.

I know you three "not so wise men" won't publish this but maybe you'll read it and really reflect how small minded you still are.

One of the greatest post I ever read... What insight you have and clarity....Thanks for your post... I really appreciated....Again Thanks....
previous post: ""Hillary has solutions and Obma has rhetoric.  I'll take solutions."

if i'm not mistaken, hydrochloric acid is a solution...

and HRC is about as caustic,

bring back democracy, down with oligarchy,  just say no to CLINgONs!
never admit a mistake
never apologize
don't listen to good advice
stay the course even when you know you are blundering
use war as a first resort

sounds a lot like George Bush. Please no more years of that kind of government.
Hillary " Pander Bear" Clinton" now says that anyone against her idea is an Elitist.  Could it be that thooe against it are calling out that the "Empress has no clothes." True if she was a dictator she could demand congress to pass the tax holiday, demand that the oil companies do not hike the price up at the retail pumps for profit, demand that the winfall profit tax be implemented. Like Marie Antoinette she can live in a dream world where her tax would not cause loss of jobs or increase global warming. Sadly for her but great for us that we live in a representative democracy.  The last time she tried the highway or my way approach was with health care refrom and we all know how that turned out.  I am tired of halfbaked solutions to appease the voters.  This is the seasoned leadership that she claims . No this is a Wasshington insider millionaire who cares only about being elected.
MSNBC news is an enigma to me!  Russert, Maddow and Olberman are professional, seasoned and each have integrity. But 'Morning Joe' is a farce, offering endless high-school level verbal 'combat' between Micah and Joe, partisan guests that salivate to get on the program, and a narcissistic ex-pol host (Joe) who is all over the political map--taking cues from the latest polls. Reminds me of the worst of the Imus show. Of particular note,  Joe et al label wise, educated and talented people as 'elitists.' What foolishness and hypocrisy! David Gregory of Race to the White House comes across as a more aggressive Israeli spokesperson than the egregious current Israeli ambassador to the U. N.  On a recent edition of the program, Gregory berated Jimmy Carter for planning to visit the Hamas leader living in Syria, and cautioned Obama that this Carter visit would lose him (Obama) essential Jewish support--"even tho Jews comprise only 3 % of our total population." He then suggested that Obama should kill Carter's trip by threatening to keep him from the upcoming Democratic Convention!

Several odd things in that town hall:  (1) Clinton using Stephanopoulos himself as her witness that she opposed NAFTA in the early 90's and (2) the African American female Clinton supporter who handed her a very softball question about Clinton's plans to help minorities.  Regarding the first, Stephanopoulos is on the spot to report on exactly what she said in opposition to NAFTA and on the second, probably 99% of the viewers were surprised at ABC putting on a black Clinton supporter with THAT question when black voters are backing Obama by such strong margins.  I don't remember any other black questioners (but maybe I'm just forgetting).
"As I watched them, I thought: you'll govern the same way you run your campaign. You'll answer or avoid, defend or deny in the same way. Which of you is best equipped to lead for at least 4 years? Which of you is the least objectionable?"

You must be completely delusional if you answer any of those questions positively for Clinton. For months now, she has done nothing but spin, spin, spin! If you believe any of her bullshit or contradictions, then I feel truly sorry for you. I have a feeling that it's not only your political views that are built on a house of cards...
Hillary and her husband have lied to the American people; The Bosnia issue, Chelsie being somewhere close to ground zero during the 911 attack and the NAFTA issue to name a few.

Then MSNBC just let all this roll over. But when Jeremiah Wright talked about all that foolishness, they glorify it and keep it going.

Frankly I am sick and tired of their biases. I don't think they are ready for change in this country and they keep hiding behind Jeremiah Wright and the electibility issue. That's a shame.

Let's talk about closing the deal..What happened to Hillary thet came into this race with everything on her side including her former perz husband.

She's the one that couldn't close the deal

She needs to stop insulting the so called blue collar workers that don't understand legislator by buying their votes with $28.00 for Summer.
I have lost respect for the Clintons. Their true colors have really come out this time. Hillary is a bully that is a "my way or the high way". b....

I appeal to Ind. and NC, and the rest of the states that still have to vote in the primaries to cast your vote for the truth...

Let's change America for the better!!!

GOBAMA 08
Clinton is nothing like Bush.  She knows what she's doing and look how far she's gotten in a primary season badly reported, and in understanding what needs to be done to fix the country.

If Obama hits the issues before he changes the process, he's going to have a learning curve to deal with.

They're similar in many ways but the times are asking for Clinton.
AS A CANADIAN, THE COMMENT BY THE CANADIAN GW, Vancouver, Canada MAKES US BELIEVE PEOPLE DOES NOT HAVE ANY UNDERSTANDING...MAYBE THE PERSON CANNOT READ AND LISTEN WITH UNDERSTAND THAT'S WHY HE/SHE DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME
"One reason Hillary has had such a hard time is the media."

No, it was the enormous groundswell of support from like-minded individuals who have been following Obama since he first got on the scene four years ago. The media didn't give him a chance until AFTER he kicked Hillary's a-- in all those caucus states.

Once again, faulty logic from a Hillary supporter.  hate to break it to you, Clinton is all soundbite and no substance. But keep on believing in your Goldy Locks! Corporate America needs more people just like you...
What would Obama do if Iran nuked Israel? Tell them: "That was not nice. I'm sorry, but we're going to have to punish you. You can't sell your Iranian made Persian rugs in the U.S., until you say you're sorry."
Hillary turns the phrase....

from:  "it's the economy, stupid"

to:    "economists are just stupid."

really??????    She really said this out loud????????
