Obama on NBC's Meet the Press

From NBC's Mark Murray
About the same time Clinton appeared on ABC, Obama sat down with NBC's Tim Russert to discuss Jeremiah Wright, gas taxes, Clinton's comments on Iran, and the Obama-Clinton race.

On Wright: "Well, obviously it's distracted us. I mean, we ended up spending a lot of time talking about Reverend Wright instead of talking about gas prices and food prices and the situation in Iraq.  And so it, it's, it wasn't welcome. But, you know, I think that the American people understand that when I joined Trinity United Church of Christ, I was committing not to Pastor Wright, I was committing to a church and I was committing to Christ... [W]hen Reverend Wright, who married me and baptized our, our children, when he made those statements, or I learned of those statements that I found so objectionable, I, I felt that they didn't define him. And so I spoke in Philadelphia about these issues and tried to construct, you know, a, a conversation about issues of race. But when I saw, this week, him come out and speak in a way that was just as divisive, that didn't explain or apologize, but rather worsened some of the comments that he had made previously, I felt it was very important to make clear that that's not who I am, that's not who I stand for. I don't think it represented well the church or the African-American church. And I had to make a clear statement. Hopefully we've been able to put it behind us."

On what he's learned from the episode: "Well, when you're in national politics, it's always good to pull the Band-Aid off quick... But life's messy sometimes, and, you know, it's not always neat, and things don't proceed in textbook Political 101 fashion. And so, you know, when I reflect back, you know, what I'm proud of is that, in the speech in Philadelphia, I think I made a contribution to the overall dialogue about how we deal with race in America. And I think that me denouncing his words without denouncing him was, at the time, the right thing to do. You know, I'm, I'm sorry that he didn't see an opportunity for him to reflect on the justifiable anger and pain that he had caused and to maybe, you know, suggest to the American people that's not, that's not what he believed. But clearly, you know, one of the things when you're running for president is that you don't have -- all this stuff is happening under a spotlight, and you've got to deal with it quickly."

On the gas-tax debate: "[T]his defines, I think, the difference between myself and Senator Clinton.  This gas tax, which was first proposed by John McCain and then quickly adopted by Senator Clinton, is a classic Washington gimmick. It, it is a political response to a serious problem that we have neglected for decades. Now, here's, here's the upshot. You're looking at suspending a gas tax for three months.  The average driver would save 30 cents per day for a grand total of $28. That's assuming that the oil companies don't step in and raise prices by the same amount that the tax has been reduced... Now, Senator Clinton says that she's going to use the windfall profits tax to fill it. First of all, she's already said that she's going to use the windfall profits tax for something else, as I have, and, and that is to invest in clean energy and, and other important measures. So that money, she's already spending twice. More importantly, nobody thinks that George Bush is actually going to spend--or is actually going to sign a law for windfall profits taxes, so that's not going to happen this summer. So what this is, is a strategy to get through the next election."

On Hillary's "obliterate" Iran comment: "Well, it's not the language that we need right now, and I think it's language that's reflective of George Bush. We have had a foreign policy of bluster and saber-rattling and tough talk, and, in the meantime, we make a series of strategic decisions that actually strengthen Iran. So -- and, you know, the irony is, of course, Senator Clinton, during the course of this campaign, has at times said, 'We shouldn't speculate about Iran.' You know, 'We've got to be cautious when we're running for president.' She scolded me on a couple of occasions about this issue, and yet, a few days before an election, she's willing to use that language."

And on what the remaining superdelegates should do: "I think the superdelegates, by rule, can make their own decision. I think the superdelegates are going to take a look not at momentary snapshot polls, but they're going to take a look at who's run the campaign that can bring about change in American and can actually govern after the election. And the number of new people that we've brought in, the organizations that we've set up in all 50 states, the enthusiasm, the energy that our campaign has displayed indicates to me and should indicate to the superdelegates that the American people are ready to move in a new direction, and that's what we're offering. And I'm confident that, if I am the nominee, that I offer Democrats the best chance of winning in November."

Hillary's new response to a question is:  ""ELITE"".

It is replacing her cackling and laughter response.

Ironically Hillary is the epitomy of an 'ELITIST' --- she knows what is best for all of us.

------------------------------------------------------
Interesting how Barak doesn't need to be interviewed by former employees, while Hilary has to sit down with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, a former member of the Clinton administration, for her interview.
I don't understant how anyone can listen to Obama  state his objectives and not want him to be the next president.  You can NEVER trust Hillary, she panders, and outright lies.  I want someone who tells us the truth even when it's not what we want to hear.  Hillary just tells you what you want to hear.  There is no way she could get her gas tax holiday passed and even less chance to get GW to approve a windfall profits tax.  She knows this.
Only with Obama's approach to Middle East policy, can the dangerous decline in American defense capability be reversed. Only with Obama's approach, can the intentions behind American policy in the region regain a measure of respect.
I am truly surprised you reported anything about the MTP interview besides wright.  We all agree to agree "wright is wrong"  Move on before you lose any more viewers.
What I like about Obama is not only does he admit to making mistakes, but most importantly he learns from his mistakes.  While in Il he voted for a tax break but it was determined that that tactic simply didn't work.  Why would he propose it again?  I'd be suspect if he did jump on the "Tax Holiday" band wagon.

Hillary is just blowing smoke up our you know what.  She'll do the same if she gets into office.
I saw part of this interview, then switched back to First Read before his comments on Hillary's asinine 'obliterate Iran', posturing. She wants to be seen as tough. She has her reputation as a fighter to keep front, and center.

I don't want a raging bull-ette, every pun you can decipher is fully intended!

I want the kind of leader in Senator Obama, that the world, along with his supporters, is praying for.
great interview. He looked presidental and had a hold on the issue. I especially liked when he said that people we have relationships with change and sometimes the relationship ruptures. Good point. Once again he connected with the working class through  his story of struggling finacially and fighting for the middle class by rejecting the gas tax holiday. This holiday is pandering to the working class and will cost us more money for gas than saving us money. this is what we need as president. someone willing to fight for the  middle class not someone like Clinton who fights with anyone who does not agree with her.
Clinton's gas tax holiday proposal is in the main no different than what the predatory lenders were offering.

Both are bait and switches, both prey on working people's need to save money, both employ illusory promises.

I wish Obama would make this argument. He IS arguing that oil companies would raise prices and there'd be no actual savings at the pump. But IMO, he should tie that in with the predatory lending scam to show that in both cases the "haves," duped/are duping the "have nots" with the lure of saving money while hiding the big picture truth.

The lenders made money, but their scam resulted in economic turmoil. Clinton will get votes, but the end result will be divisiveness and more gridlock. Both involve deception and cheating.

And both scams are dishonest and elitist. The mutual mantra: Dupe 'em, take 'em, move on.

IMO, Obama should be talking to voters on this level. He IS calling Clinton's plan a "shell game." But why not also show voters that it's the same kind of shell game the predatory lenders ran on them. No one's unclear on how rotten that one was.

Well done, Tim Russert!  As always, objective, probing, intelligent, and respectful .. in short, a model journalist!

And well done Barack Obama, standing firm and continuing with his usual honesty and forthrightness.  Telling the truth is always hard, but he has always done it regardless of political correctness or expediency, and with the utmost regard for what's in the best interest of the American people.  In our family, we pray that we were watching the next President of the United States with Tim Russert this morning (May 4, 2008).
we the people in the effort to create a more perfect union, have a unique opportunity to elect a President who can do just that.  The question is whether we have the courage to embrace change and thus Senator Obama, or we want four more years of George Bush or four more years of gas tax holidays that insult us.
Obama really shines in these formats where he can answer questions with full sentences. Watching, I was again impressed with his steady temperment and his thoughtful way of answering a question. But reading the transcrip,I am amazed at how consistent all his thoughts are.He really does have a big picture that makes sense to me.
You better believe I was screaming at my TV set this morning as Russert asked question after question about Rev Wright. I nearly swore off MTP right then and there, but Obama handled it patiently and when Russert FINALLY moved on to issues of substance Obama was brilliant, just the opposite of the pandering Cinton/McCain. Very reassuring.
Very sincere and honest interview.  It  is beyound reason why any rational person who actually listened to this interview would cast their vote for anyone other than Obama.  He has everything you could hope for in a President.  I have been a registered Republican all my adult life and will be casting my vote for the candiate who will truly represent all the people.
Barack is the only one who can unite the country restore respect for us in the world.  Hillary will only be able to unite the GOP to vote against her in November.  And we don't need another McBush in the Whitehouse.
I'm suprised there hasn't been much talk in the media about Obama's past experience voting for a gas tax break.  My theory is, the story shows that Obama used his past experience to make a more nuanced and correct decision about this issue.

That means the media would have to say that Obama's EXPERIENCE on this issue is superior to Clinton's lack thereof.  But that would run counter to the narrative the MSM is trying to portray...
two weeks of Rev Wright don't you think you have beaten
that horse enough, This really is a made up issue
because of the 24 hr news channels you need filler
but MSNBC ran this story more than the other channels combined. So much for being emparcel you ran this story 10 to 1 to a Clinton story,  how big of a story do you think this would have been in the day's of real journalist like Morrow,Crokite,Brinkley bet you go home filling kind of dirty after slinging this kind of mud around
Endorsement from: Over 57, white, worked my way out of lower middle class, and Jewish for Obama.

Obama  is the Hope of America
Can you imagine someone with his powers of thought, clarity of mind, conscientiousness, and honesty in the White House.

A Far change from Bush, Hillary and McCain.
I like Joe Andrews, the former DNC chairman was supportive of Hillary.
After what i've seen on the campaign trail enough is enough

The time is Right for Obama

Obama cannot be taken seriously.  What a bunch of bologna.  He agrees with his pastor because he spent 20 years in his church.  He would have left if he was offended.  Everything Obama says about it now is just a bunch of bologna.
I watched the interview this morning and was very impressed with Senator Obama's performance. He is a thinking man, very eloquent and his presence is very Presidential. He doesn't think 'bullying' is the way to improve our stance in the world. I agree. He does not think a quick fix to the gax price gauging that has been going on for months is the solution, but has offered up precise, long-term solutions that will. He LEARNS from his mistakes and the has EXPERIENCE necessary to KNOW when something will not work. He listens to those around him and takes ALL data into account BEFORE making a decision. He has listened to many viewpoints, some he agrees with some he does not, in order to learn from and appreciate where people of different backgrounds come from so he can best lead the American people FORWARD! If you do not have understanding, you cannot truly bring about the REAL change this country so desparately needs.

I am  proud to be an Obama supporter. I am proud that he has the guts to stand up against the Clinton name recognition, inside advantage and criminal tactis to try and free the American people from the politics of fear and division.

God Bless this wonderful man. You don't have to agree with everything he says and does, but you do have to give him credit for having the courage to stand up for what he sees as the 'FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW'. We cannot afford any more years of the Washington as usual. It is time to turn the page...................:)
I think Obama just loves to hear himself talk. He sits there with his legs crossed, speaking on and on in a tone of voice that puts you to sleep. Somebody, please give this man a cigarette so he can stop talking, please.  He does not have enough experience to be president.  Go Hillary!
Obama's interview with Tim Russert was candid, honest and sincere.  No pandering to voters.   I hope that this interview will air again and again so people can really hear what this man  is about.
I, for one, want a smart president - one who thinks over his answers, rather than just mouthing "talking points".  If that's elite, then, okay - I'll go for elite.  Is honesty one of those "elite" traits?  Then, okay, let's have "elite", and oh yeah, honesty for a change.  Let's finally have a President we can trust and respect.  Obama 08
It cannot be the province of Mr. Obama to decide when he is "moving past" his association with Rev. Wright. this is a decision of the people.

If we are to dismiss Obamma's connection to this person who proudly proclaims that America is the Worlds Terrorist, and chants "God damn America" in a context that unequivocally supports the worst possible understanding of his intent, Mr. Obamma must give us a rationale for this. What he has offered is simple disavowal only. You cannot have the depth of willing and intentional association with such an individual and simply just say I'm going to change the subject. In fact he leaned on the association with Rev. Wright to offer proof he is no longer a Muslim.

Then when it is politically expedient he claims that the closest of direct intentional associations is and should be severed. He says over and over again that Wrights views are not his, but actual objective evidence says the opposite, and he tries to change the subject.

Obama uses deceptive reasoning when he analogizes his somewhat racist white grandmother (which, like ones skin color is not a relationship that one actually chooses) to his fully consensual and intentional relationship with Wright. The American people do not judge a man for their family because they know no one gets to freely choose their parents or siblings, but they can and should judge the character of the man for his open free choices of association, particularly when they are directly on point. Wright hates America, in a very racist, direct and unacceptable way. I write this after listening to hours of Wrights words (in perfect context) fully willing for the sake of  friends whom I love to see if this was nothing but sensationalist reporting. It is not, Wake Up!

This is not constructive criticism of occasional bad policies (which is true of every country).

We all knew little about Obama in the beginning, he is a great speaker, and he is very charismatic. We now know enough to say at least that he must give a proper defense of Wright, not a simple disavowal.

We cannot stand for hatred of America.
IT's my birthday and I want my family to donate to Senator Obama's campaign as my present! The man is just the salve we need to heal this nation and this world.
Obama is the democratic nominee that we need...he speaks to Americans with honesty and shows that thhe path will be arduous and that we will all have to make sacrifices. Hillary pretends to be a Santa Claus whose red gift sack is actually empty and she assumes that Americans are too stupid to notice. I look at Hillary and scream, "Look America, the empress has no clothes!"
I just don't see how you can watch clips from his interview (msnbc.com) and NOT want the guy to be your next president.  He is forthright, admits when he could've done better, then says how he will do better.  There is nothing "slick" about him.  He is an authentic human being, and God knows we need one of those in the White House!
he's what america and the world needs. not Mcbush , and say  and do anything hillary.
Voters, please.  Use your heads. Don't repeat Hillary's and the media's talking points without listening.  Since when is having a education and an open mind, elitist?  Since Hillary said so? That makes her the elitist because she's banking on your biases to keep you from listening to the truth.  Listen up, people.  Obama has lived your life.  He's worn your shoes.  And he made it.  Let that tell you what you can do.  He is not asking you for anything more than faith in yourself.  It's taken a lot more than smarts to remain dignifed and focused with the crap the media and the Clintons have been spewing.  It's taken what my grandmother called true grit.  A thinking man with true grit.  That's what I call a leader.  Listen to the truth, America.  Pay attention and elect this man of character and intellect.  The world is watching and waiting for us to show them that we are a nation of people with true grit and character.
I think our New York politicians sometimes suffer from Tourette's syndrome....Rudy's was "9/11!"...Hillary's is "Elitist!" or "FIGHT!" and MSNBC's (based in NY) is "Rev. Wright!"

Please Indiana and North Carolina...VOTE, but vote INTELLIGENTLY.  Do the homework!
DITTO ABOVE comment.  OBAMA '08
When I hear people saying, "well he was in that church for 20 years!" GET OVER IT. NEXT STORY. I don't give a crap if he stayed home and sent money to Pat Roberston. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, remember? He obviously didn't go there that often, shame on him maybe, but others from the church also say the nasty sermons couldn't have been that often, they didn't hear them. Wright was also well respected enough to heal Bill's pride after he let Monika do you know what, while Hillo watched reruns on TV upstairs!!!

"YES I'M RICH ... GOD BLESS ME"

HILLARY CLINTON
Times are getting desperate.  We need a great President, not a good one.  We need Obama.  Any lesser candidate is not up to the difficult tasks at hand.  We need honesty, integrity, and vision to heal our wounds, save our troops, repair our economy, and put our government back on the right path, regaining global respect and bolstering our Constitution.  The only candidate capable of achieving all we need is Obama.  The rest?  Just smoke and mirrors, pandering and hawking.
“I’ll tell you – I’m not going to put my lot with economists, because I know if we get it right, if we actually did it right, if we had a president who used all the tools of the presidency, we would design it in such a way that it would be implemented effectively” THIS STATEMENT IS SO TYPICAL OF HILLARY'S ATTITUDE AND IS WHY HER HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN WENT NOWHERE IN THE 90"S. SHE WON'T WORK WITH ANYONE ON ANYTHING. IT'S GOING TO BE HER WAY OR THE HIGHWAY! THAT'S GEORGE BUSH MENTALITY.
For someone who supposedly lacks the "experience" to lead a nation, Obama certainly sounded knowledgable, pragmatic, honest and trustworthy and showed a greater depth and understanding on foreign policy than some of the more "experienced" DC insiders would have us believe. In other words, with Obama as president, I won't lay awake at night worrying about our country being mislead into another mismanaged war.
I am glad Obama has the audacity to apologize for his misjudgment concerning Reverend Wright. I am still waiting for Hillary Clinton to apologize for the 4,000 people who are now dead in Iraq (that's only the Americans, let's count the millions of Iraqi civilians dead, too) because she voted for this Iraq War. I also want her to apologize for the trillions of dollars wasted in Iraq that would have prevented the home foreclosure crisis at home and the economic crisis now. Oh yeah, I forgot, that isn't newsworthy enough for MSNBC because the Wright controversy is more "sensational" than 4,000 dead young Americans and thousands of dollars of taxes wasted for each American. Wow, thanks for you balanced coverage. I dare you to post this comment. I don't think you will.
question:  why is the "1st read" entry "obama on meet the press" essentially a transcript of the interview, yet the "1st read" entry "hillary on abc" full of subjective commentary and analysis by the "1st read" team?

can "1st read" at least go through the motions of caring about fairness and balance and objectivity in its coverage of this race by utilizing the same coverage format rules for both candidates, please?!?
Deborah is right.  Obama will put you to sleep.  Maybe that is it--he has some voters hypnotized.  Obama can wish the Wright issue would go away.  It won't.  Obama and Wright are on the same page.  If not, why did he stay in that church for 20 years. Why Obama is saying doesn't pass the smell test. It goes to the core of his creditability and judgment.
I think Obama and Wright are in sync. Obama's bittergate is the true Obama.

Obama is ALL rhetoric.  Just words--that is all.

I watched MTP today.  I thought Obama came across as honest, knowledgeable and smart.  Hillary's recent panderings like:  her shot and a beer (real classy), learning to shoot as a little girl (yeah right), and now the gas thing.  Does she think all Americans are stupid. Maybe she was wounded by sniper fire while on a peacekeeping  mission to Northern Ireland.
Senator Obama, was upfront and honest, and even if it was painful, he stood his ground and handled things they way he felt was right in his heart.  Americans can see through all the sound bits, please try to change the way the media reports politics.  How about repeating sound bites of what Senator Clinton said to Bill O'rielly, last week:  "GOD BLESS US RICH PEOPLE".  Don't you think some of her blue collar workers would be offended by that.  I was!
Have you ever noticed how Hillary supporters make personal attacks and Obama supporters give thoughtful responses?  Perhaps it is true that Hillary supporters lack education.

I watched both interviews this morning, and it was clear that Hillary would not directly answer any question while Obama answered every question.  It is the Bill/Hillary type of politics that has ruined our country.  We need someone with intelligence and honesty to lead our country.  It is so sad that only lower educated whites in poorer areas and older women make up the majority of Hillary support.  Neither of these groups obviously make their decisions based on the big issues that face us today.  Do we really want a pandering gas tax that no economist (including Hillary's) think is good?  Do we really want a commander in chief that will obliterate Iran as an opening negotiation position?  Will we be proud of our country if we don't elect someone because of his race?
I watched both interviews this morning, with Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton. I've read all the comments above. I've read and listened to all sides. I have come to the conclusion that I have many reasons for supporting Sen. Clinton. There was a time I thought that Sen. Obama was an equal candidate, however there is alot of information out there that is legitimate and extremely damaging to his bid for the nomination.
Obama supporters get so upset even when Obama supporter Tim Russert asks Rev. Wright questions. Do you really think that the Republicans will be as kind and gentle? There is much more to Obama's involvement in the Rezko scandal. Read what is out there decide for yourself what is true or not and then think what will the Republicans do with the information, true or not. We need to win this time.
Who and why are certain people paying Rev. Wright to continue his controversial and inflamed speaking engagements?  It is obvious, just as it is obvious that many Republicans are crossing over in the primaries to vote for Clinton, that there are powerful and influential people who want to keep the nonsense going and avoid having the focus be on the issues.  We know that McCain strongly and stubbornly offers nothing but more of the same (GWBush policies), the same focus on benefit for Special Interest and a select few while giving the average American only apathy, subterfuge and the costs.  We know Hillary is a product of, indebted to and simply just more Washington as usual and that she literally will say/do anything, without conscience, guilt or hesitation, to get whatever she wants (sociopathic personality like GWBush).  So who and why is pushing and paying to see it be a contest between McCain and Hillary?  What and how do they gain and what will result for the average American?  Remember what transpired, swiftboat and all, in 2004 and 2000 and be very careful people!!
I was a bit disappointed that Russert spent almost 15 minutes on the Rev. Wright issue. I was afraid it would turn into a fiasco like the Stephanopoulos/Gibson interview.  (the Clinton Stephanopoulos interview was a complete joke).  It's time to move on..the issues are too important to dwell on Obama's pastor or his flag pin.   You are wasting our time (and Obama's) rehashing old news.
Polls show 75% of the people aren't happy with the way things are now....so 75% of the people should be voting for Obama then, he's the only one who offers change.....it's so simple really.  Obama '08
I watched the whole thing.  Excellent interview.  He is so right-on in his thinking and reasoning.  Very impressive.  I voted for him in February and I can't wait to vote for him in November.  I also made another donation last night.  By the way, if you get a chance, listen to Bill Moyers commentary on Rev. Wright.  Awesome!
Looking at this election one can say. The world, not only the United States, are in urgent need for a true leader. Hilary Clinton stands for a true opportunist. Barack Obama on the other hand can create the strong momentum for change and evolution. If he is true, then he is a true leader and he will be helpful for the mankind. We, the Greeks, have examples like this with leaders like the First Konstantinos Karamanlis (true leader who made the difference) and Andreas Papandreou (leader but not for the good of the people).
Here's what Arab News had to say about Hillary Clinton's threat to "obliterate Iran".

"The Saudi paper called Clinton's nuclear threat, "the foriegn policy politics of the madhouse", saying "it demonstrates the same doltish ignorance that has distinguished Bush's foreign relations."    Arab News 4/08

I'll take Obama's more moderate foreign policy positions over Clinton's any day of the week, month, or year. Thank you Senator Obama for putting forward a more moderate, thoughtful and diplomatic approach to our foreign policy.

Chuck Todd, you missed the key statement Obama stated about protecting Iran and not Israel.

Check the transcript

SEN. OBAMA:  It--Israel is a ally of ours.  It is the most important ally we have in the region, and there's no doubt that we would act forcefully and appropriately on any attack against Iran, nuclear or otherwise.  So--but it is important that we use language that sends a signal to the world community that we're shifting from the sort of cowboy diplomacy, or lack of diplomacy, that we've seen out of George Bush.  And this kind of language is not helpful. When Iran is able to go to the United Nations complaining about the statements made and get some sympathy, that's a sign that we are taking the wrong approach.

Protect Iran, over Israel.  Freudian slip like Rural PA comments or true intentions?

Print this MsNBC and Chuck Todd with your bias and sexist views.
Obama could say I messed my pants and his supporters would go on and on about how magnificent he was and how he had a deeper understanding of crap than any one else. It was a softball interview.
