May 6: The IN crossover dribble

Posted: Monday, May 05, 2008 9:15 AM by Domenico Montanaro

NORTH CAROLINA: A CNN poll released over the weekend had Obama leading Clinton by eight points in North Carolina, 50%-42%.

INDIANA: A new Suffolk University poll (conducted May 3-4, MOE +/- 4%) has Clinton leading Obama in the Hoosier State, 49%-43%. “Despite Clinton's lead,” the release says, “Obama was seen as more popular (58% favorable -- 29% unfavorable) than Clinton (53% favorable -- 36% unfavorable). In addition, slightly more voters said that Obama (35%) would be the next president, compared to 28% for Clinton and 25 percent for McCain.

What will be the unintended consequence of so many Indiana Republicans crossing over and voting in the Dem primary? Could it spell problems for incumbent GOP candidates because the electorate will be so conservative?

Per TPM, Clinton dropped attack mailer in Indiana against Obama on guns. "Where does Barack Obama stand on guns?" it asks. "Depends on who he's talking to." And it also says, "And just this month, Barack Obama accused people in rural places and small towns of being 'bitter' people who 'cling to guns.'"

But Politico’s Ben Smith notes the mailer contains a gaffe. “Hillary Clinton’s mailing attacking Sen. Barack Obama’s record on guns appears to include a striking visual gaffe: The image of the gun pictured on the face of the mailing is reversed, making it a nonexistent left-handed model of the Mauser 66 rifle. To make matters worse, a prominent gun dealer said, it’s an expensive German gun with customized features that make it clearly European.”

The Boston Globe looks at the Catholic vote. “The gathering of Catholics for Obama near Notre Dame last week reinforced a perception that if Obama has a weakness among Catholics, it is with those who fit into other demographic subdivisions: women and older, less educated and lower-income voters, groups that Clinton has attracted. Conversely, the group that met in South Bend represented Obama's demographic strengths among the more educated, affluent, and, except for a small group of Notre Dame faculty members who attended, younger voters.”

In her speech last night at the Indiana Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Clinton laid claim to the “Hoosier spirit,” NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli reports. “If there’s one thing you know about me, I am no shrinking violet,” she said. “I may stumble, I may get knocked down but I will always get right, and I will never quit until the job is finished… That’s the Hoosier spirit.”

Clinton announced that her family has combined for 100 stops in the state, saying she has found that in her travels she has seen that “Hoosiers are the kind of hard-working people who keep this country going and growing.” “And it is time that you had a president who knows that middle-class Americans are the backbone of this economy and the guarantor of the American dream,” she said. “You deserve a president who will work with you to make Indiana an engine of prosperity. So with the Indy 500 right around the corner, let me ask you, Indiana Democrats: Are you ready to start your engines and get America going again?”

Obama’s speech, meanwhile, focused on economic issues and on unifying people across racial, regional, and party lines, NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones notes. "We have always been at our best -- our party, the Democratic Party -- when we summon the entire nation to lead not by polls but by principles, not by calculation but by conviction," he said. "When we say to the entire nation, we are calling you to a higher purpose, a common purpose. That's the party that America needs us to be right now and that's the choice that confronts the voters in Indiana and North Carolina on Tuesday."

Obama briefly on the major issues from his platform, from health care and clean energy to education and ending the war in Iraq. He was introduced by former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D), who called him "the candidate who can reshape the contours of American politics and bring us together again."

Per NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan, Howard Dean also addressed the dinner. "We are going to win the presidency. The truth is that the only thing that's going to stop us from winning the presidency is ourselves. We need to support whichever candidate wins the nomination," he told the crowd. "This is a tough race there are candidates who are deeply committed to the candidates that you came here for and to see and deeply committed are working so hard, from other states, state after state, giving the most money they can afford to give, working leaving their families behind," Dean said, acknowledging the massive effort that both candidates campaigns and supporters have put into winning the race.”

Hoosier kidding?  The people of Indiana need to give Sentator Clinton a four-year pit stop.
Where does Hillary stand on the issue of (fill in the blanks)?

Depends on how much money she had paid to her campaign.....
Funny how poll are unreliable. Depending on the poll you are reading, Obama is up by 2 or down as this article suggests. The important thing is to avoid reading the polls and let the voters decide because there is too much variability on the poll.
Time to take the high road.
Catholics have rarely been a coherent voting bloc. Not that the individuals aren't coherent, of course, but as a group - they really aren't one, politically.

If they were, they would be a huge one. I think something close to a quarter of U.S. voters are Catholic. Catholics comprise 21 percent of the population, and probably vote a little more consistently than national average, thus it most likely is close to one out of four voters.
Why has the media not brought up anything much about the magnet company in Indiana that closed and the jobs were outsourced to China?  I know Hillary was blaming Bush, but they said that a lot of the blame should go to Clinton.  Why is this not being made into a big deal?  If it was Obama, we'd be hearing about it non-stop.  I really believe the media has been giving Hillary a free ride.  They haven't even mentioned the lawsuit against her and Bill.  Why not?  We've heard about Reczko and Ayers with Obama, but nothing about Hillary.  Why?  Can someone explain it to me please?
As Guam goes so goes the country.  There is an ingrained Guamish folklore that states -  "When the shell and the bird are in line and the year does end in nine then he of a darker skin will be in the house of white in Washington". As Guam goes so goes the country.
http://www.artba.org/economics_research/current_issues/indiana-illinois_gas_tax_2001_.pdf

The gas tax holiday is nothing but big give away to the oil companies. The consumer will see little or nothing and fuel prices more than likely will rise as a result.

My vote is for Obama.
I'm finished with Clinton. Even if perhaps she becomes the nominee, I cannot and will not vote for her in November.

And the Clintons say that Obama is out of touch.  They must be courting that elusive left-handed-European-hunter vote.

Facts are a stubborn thing.  Obama cannot close his 20 year old relationship with Wright because there is so much video evidence against it.  On the TV program THE VIEW, Obama declared that Reverend Wright accepted that his views of America were inappropriate and mischaracterized, that his words had offended many people.  Then weeks later Wright goes on a national Hate America Tour?  This was either a blatant lie; Obama using clever semantics to avoid the main issue.  Or worse, Obama was fooled by Wright which is kind of scary.  That a possible next president can be played by a character such as Wright.  Check the video evidence yourselves.

And if the video is not enough: Read this in politico.com which calls on Obama to state the truth.

Hillary "Republican" Clinton, the elitist panderer, has no room to criticize Obama about pandering.  Her and her pal McCain are the ones who will flip flop their positions just to gain votes.

Go Obama!
The only consistent thing throughout this entire campaign has been that the polls have been pretty much all over the place. I would love to see a report card for some of these pollsters - many of these polls are basically equivalent to flipping a coin - they have a 50% chance of being right no matter what they say.

I haven't been polled all year . . . they are polling different people each time, so  even the comparisons are basically not apples to apples. Poll or no poll, I'm just counting down the days until Senator Obama wins the nomination.

P.S. Amazing how quickly the McCain "war for oil" story faded . . . the media is so easily bored. Also, it is funny to see "journalists" trying to "interview" Senator Clinton - she just sticks to her "misstatements" and the "journalists" just move past it and laugh at her corny jokes. American journalism is officially dead.

Obama '08/'12
It does not take any courage to take cheap shots at your opponent ..... Clinton campaigning for god and guns ---- priceless or should I say shameless --- and not true ----- Republican for OBAMA
I'm finished with Obama. Even if perhaps he becomes the nominee, I cannot and will not vote for him in November.
When I made calls on behalf of the Clinton camp to Indiana I found that most Republicans are voting Republican for McCain or Ron Paul not Obama. In fact, I only found a handful of support for Obama.

I think Hillary will win Indiana. As respects to North Carolina, Hillary will either win or come close enough to call it a win. Obama's campaign is in deep trouble.  Voters are having buyers' remorse now that we know Obama better.  We now know how inexperienced he really is. His connection to Rev. Wright, the anti-American, combined with his elitist comments about rural voters finally showed us the real Obama.

I said it before, I will say it again...the democratic party should change all open primaries to closed primaries.  Republicans have no business in picking the democratic nominee.  It's antithetical...its stupid!  It allows the opposing party to throw a monkey wrench into the process.
I've seen the light!  I'm voting for Hillary!  I fully support Hillary!  I want Hillary to be president of the USA!
EVERYONE SHOULD LOOK at the polls more closely.  Rasmussen AND Gallup have Obama trending up and Clinton trending down for several days running now.  And, Obama is trending up vs. McCain, too.  And, that data includes polling from 3 or 4 days ago, before Obama began to turn the corner ..... so the current snapshot is likely even rosier than it appears in the tracking polls.  This means even a split decision Tuesday will be followed by Obama gains and Clinton losses.  And, does anyone really give Hillary a chance in NC?  Undecideds are unlike to break for her there as heavily as PA because at least 1/3 of the undecideds are black.  It'll be Obama by 8 in NC and probably a narrow Clinton win in IN -- 4- 6 points.
We need to crush Big Oil!!! Save those resources for out third world thug masters that will come along as soon as we democrats balkanize America.
Yes both Hoosiers and Tarheels, like the rest of us, are good, hard-working people filled with a grace and a love of country.

How patronizing and discounting of them to think there vote can be bought for $30 and on their hard-working backs.

Obama is appealing to all of our better interests...working class people, like good and hardworking people everywhere, respond well to being lifted up.

Obama for our best future, no pandering, just working hard to come up with others in designing and instituting good solutions.
Vote for Hillary to save the Democratic Party. Vote for Obama to give the keys to the GOP.
Obama is in deep trouble. He is failing to win over the white working-class vote, and this thing with Wright is on the television day and night, over and over. I still find it hard to believe he did not know that his pastor of 20 years, was a racist, anti-American bigot. That is why I am changing my support and voting for Hillary.
The poll showing Clinton in the lead is +or-5%.  That's not much better than a coin flip.  That's a throw away.
Hillary Clinton is beyond pathetic. She has no chance whatsoever of winning the nomination. She is now only in this race because she is so hellbent on destroying Senator Obama's chances of winning in November.
Barack's move in the polls in Indiana should continue up until the vote tommorow. The tide has turned. He has found his voice on the issue of economics. It's a bold platform that will ring true with Indiana. The experts, to a man, support his position on the issue so prominent in the news this week, Hillary's goofy gas tax pander. I pray this is the end of Hillary.
Rush Limbaugh And The New VRWC To Elect Hillary Clinton?
http://www.peterfpaul.com/category/barack/

Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh may have shown Friday that he is joining former Clinton arch-enemies Richard Mellon Scaife, Matt Drudge, News Max publisher Chris Ruddy, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity in either flat out supporting Hillary publicly, or providing a strategic media coverage of her and her campaign intended to help her more than hurt her chances to win against Obama and possibly regain the White House.
Judge Munoz Saves Hillary’s Presidential Bid In LA Court Action

http://www.peterfpaul.com/2008/04/27/judge-munoz-saves-hillarys-presidential-bid-in-la-court-action/

In the landmark civil fraud case against Bill Clinton in Los Angeles, where the former President is charged with defrauding a Hollywood dot com millionaire to help Hillary Clinton obtain more than $1.2 million from him for her 2000 Senate campaign, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz ruled on Friday, April 25 that Hillary Clinton would not be required to testify in a sworn deposition as a material witness in the case until AFTER the November election!
Vote "NO" on the Clinton-McCain Gas Tax on May 6.
Obama is the right candidate for the Presidency this Year of 2008.The Clintons defamed the White House. what will happen when the President travels and Mr President is overseeing the
White House? Americans hate beeing vilified by the World.
HRC stated, when asked why there was a net 30k loss of jobs in upstate NY when she promised 250k job, "I thought Al Gore would be president and we would have a democratic Congress."  So apparently she had no contingency when that did not occur. It seems the gas tax holiday hinders on one crucial issue: if she can get the support to put this through in the next month and a half.  This is very, very unlikely. What will she say when asked why this holiday did not come into fruition? "I thought I would have congressional support"  I hate being lied to like this.

Why should I believe a word Obama says?
Krauthammer Revisits the 'Race' Speech

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 8:12:05 am PST

The Barack Obama campaign is desperately hoping that most Americans are dumb hicks with the memory retention of soap dishes; because if they start to compare what he said in that Philadelphia “race” speech last March with what he said last Tuesday, he’s sunk: The ‘Race’ Speech Revisited.

“I can no more disown him [Jeremiah Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother.”

   — Barack Obama, Philadelphia, March 18

Guess it’s time to disown Granny, if Obama’s famous Philadelphia “race” speech is to be believed
THE WORLD TRADE ORG,NFTA,OPENING UP TRADE WITH CHINA IN 1998 AND THE IRAQ WAR VOTE.THIS IS HOW THE CLINTONS HAVE SCREWED THE WORKING PEOPLE.FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON ME.FOOL ME TWICE I DONT THINK SO!
This one's for Leanza Cornett who commented below...

Facts are a stubborn thing aren't they? In 1995 Hillary made a comment to her husband about working class whites: "Screw 'em... what did they ever do for you?" (Just google 'Hillary Clinton screw em' and you'll see the reference - a meeting where several people corroborated her saying this)

Hillary didn't get off the plane in eastern Europe in the hail of sniper fire that she claimed she did, not once, but multiple times. And the lie grew in proportion each time she told it.

Hillary's gas tax plan targets money from the luxury tax that she's already allocated for something else. She couldn't cite a single respected economist who tinks her plan is a good one.

Hillary says that people don't turn to their faith when frustrated, angry and, dare I say bitter, yet that's exactly what she does just as she criticizes Obama for stating this. In a forum sponsored by MomLogic.com just this past weekend, Clinton was asked about how she endured “through really difficult times” in her marriage. “I obviously was fortunate to be able to rely on and be grounded in my faith, which has been an anchor for me throughout my entire life,” she said.

Hillary was the overwhelming favorite going into the primaries and she asks 'why can't Obama close the deal?' This is absurd, considering where she started from. She belives she would be the best president. Last time I checked, that decision is made by voters, not by a candidate. She's lost 2/3 of all the primaries and caucuses, trails in pledged delegates and has watch her once large margin in super delegates dwindle to less than 20. So who can't close the deal here?

Hillary bashed Obama for serving on a board and knowing a guy from the Weatgher Underground, while the Clinton's pardoned a couple of these folks while they were in the White House.

And while we're on the topic of guilt by association... Hillary would have us believe that the fact that we have known or been involved with someone means that what they say and beleive is what we also believe. If that's true, the Clinton's have a list of convicted felons that they've included as their friends. That is a fact.

And, facts are rather stubborn things, aren't they?
Anne, Pa.: are you kidding? The list they give you is Hillary supporters or Dems and you clearly were calling the bubba faction. If you got a lot voting Republican, it's because the rural voter won't vote for her as she had hoped! they don't just give you a list of everyone in the state!! I have called Democratic lists and in Indiana, Obama is running very strong, so I guess it depends what list you end up with!

Leanza Cornett, you post that same stupid post every day and it's really annoying and idiotic. Why don't you go back and listen to Rush instead and give us a break!
No matter what happens tomorrow Obama will be the democratic nominee. Why does 'MSNBC', and the other cable networks pretend that this primary is close, or YOU ALL DELUSIONAL, or just plain aginst OBAMA. Some polls have Obama leading in Indiana but you all just seem to ignore them. One thing is becoming very clear if the situation was reversed you so called independent journalist would be clamoring for Obama to drop out of the race, he is destroying the democratic party, this fact is TRUE whether you in the media choose to admit or NOT.
Purposeful Polarization by Bill and Hillary on Race, Gender, and Religion. Why? Bill and Hillary are going for the Racially Charged Majority White Voter Backlash? Bill Clinton polarized black and white american in South Carolina  Bill's remarks were meant to race-baited.  Bill and Hillary calculated move was to polarize, and go after the majority white vote in North Carolina, and Indiana.  Will Americans both white and black, defeat the "Clinton smears ?
CNN is having a Wright free day - recongining viewer fatigue.  Sorry I have to use my remote today.  MSNBC is sounding too much like a broken record!!
Hillary is nothing but a phony and if weren't for the Republicans playing havoc in the Dems primaries this would have been over long ago.  The so called latte drinking, educated, black folks will never vote for Hillary Clinton.
HILLARY CLINTON is the best choice for President of the USA!  Obama is not electable due to his questionable background and inability to answer direct questions without a prepared speech and teleprompter.  He reads from cards on every issue - no thoughts of his own - watch him you will see!
IN & NC will help Hillary help our Country!
If Americans permit "dirty politics" and lying to millions of people (wasn't her husband impeached for lying???), slanted reporting of ABC, Fox (employer of Carl Rove who is having trouble staying out of jail!) and Rush Limbaugh, who encourages his audience to attempt to manipulate the voting system to provide an unfair advantage to Clinton, to sway them from a truly visionary and exceptional candidate for president, they deserve to live with Hillary and the Clintons for the next 4 years.
Lighten up LB your elitism is showing. You Obamabots are pathetic ,nasty, mean, whiners. If you are the face of Change you guys need some plastic surgery. I have never seen such a hateful miserable pathetic did I say Pathetic  already group of sheeplike, Kool aid fed , morons in my life. Oh yeah That goes for the Obama whores at First Read too.

With each passing day, I find it more difficult to imagine a unified party after this primary.

I am begging all Indiana and North Carolina voters to go out tomorrow and vote for Barack Obama.  This needs to end before the party destroys itself.
What has happened to Joe Scarborough? He winks at Willy in between his make-beleive love for Hillary. It is so Condescending! He is truly becoming a joke! So many of us have tuned him out, I watch CNN now and get my news from the internet.

You pundits and journalist seemingly believe that your views have become more important that the voters views.

You are not the superstars in this race, WE ARE!

Like rev. Wright, you also need to check your  Narcissistic EGOS at the door.!
DREW Z:  Thanks, you've summed up the situation perfectly; I couldn't have said it better or agree more.
I'd like to add another to your list - Clinton's association with her preacher who was recently convicted and sentenced for child molestation and child endangerment. Why has she not broken off her relationship with or denounced him??

When I made calls on behalf of the Clinton camp to Indiana I found that most Republicans are voting Republican for McCain or Ron Paul not Obama. In fact, I only found a handful of support for Obama.
