First thoughts: The math game

*** The Math Game: Both candidates seemed very exhausted during their morning show appearances on TODAY and Morning Joe. And that probably isn’t surprising -- tomorrow is the last BIG primary day. Despite the fact that another month of contests is still on the docket, nearly half of all remaining delegates will get handed out tomorrow. And the math will be a lot more crystal clear after tomorrow, both in delegates and the popular vote. Following Guam, there are now 404 pledged delegates up grabs, and 187 of them will be decided on Tuesday. Plus, per our count, there are 268 undeclared superdelegates. Here are the basics of what each candidate needs: Assuming he wins half of the delegates tomorrow (93), Obama needs just 38% of ALL remaining delegates to get to the magic number of 2,025. If Clinton wins 94 delegates on Tuesday, she will need 66% of all remaining delegates. In addition, assuming that delegate split tomorrow, then Clinton will need 85% of all remaining PLEDGED delegates to catch Obama for the lead in that category. Moreover, if Clinton simply wanted to cut Obama's pledged delegate lead to 100, she'd need to win 62% of all remaining delegates after tomorrow. As we've noted before, the math is certainly difficult for Clinton.

*** Enough baggage to fill a plane: There’s also plenty baggage going into tomorrow… Clinton can't name a single economist to back up her gas-tax plan. While it's easy to dismiss the idea that economists are heartless folks, isn't one of the chief criticisms of Bush is that he doesn't listen to experts? Also, Clinton defended her "obliterate" Iran comment on Sunday, but refused to reuse the word (doesn't that suggest she DOES regret the choice of words?) Meanwhile, Obama may have to explain at some point his quid pro quo with the Teamsters; how does one who is promising a new transparency in politics promise something that the general public has to find out about via reporters asking tough questions? And then there’s Wright, Wright, Wright. When Obama can get through a TV interview without the name Rev. Wright coming up, that's when he'll know he's out of the woods. So far, he's not out of the woods.

*** Poll watch: A new USA Today/Gallup poll out today is disastrous for Obama. He now trails Clinton by seven points and trails her by five on the question of who would be the more electable nominee. A Clinton sweep, and the CW on Obama could absolutely reverse course over night. Then again, an Obama win in just one of the two states and he probably stops the national poll slide. Meanwhile, the latest New York Times/CBS poll has better numbers for Obama: He has a 12-point lead over Clinton; a strong majority approves of the way in which he handled the Wright controversy; and both he and Clinton sport double-digit leads over McCain in hypothetical general election match-ups.

*** Bill’s excellent adventure: If there was ever a day to do a day-on-the-trail story about Bill Clinton, today's the day As we mentioned last week, Bill Clinton makes a whopping nine stops in North Carolina today, most of them in rural parts of the state. The stops? Elizabeth City, New Bern, Jacksonville, Smithfield, Zebulon, Louisburg, Henderson, Roxboro, and Raleigh. As the Washington Post puts it, “After a series of awkward moments and costly missteps while campaigning for his wife, Clinton has finally discovered a role that suits him. He's become the campaign's self-proclaimed ‘ambassador to small-town America,’ traveling to places where the mere arrival of his motorcade signals a significant moment in local history, where his charm and affability carry substantial weight among voters.”

*** The weekend in delegates: Obama picked up four superdelegates over the weekend, to Clinton’s net of zero. Obama got the backing of New Mexico Democratic Party Chairman Brian Colon and three add-on superdelegates -- former Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening, former South Carolina Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum and Guam add-on Jamie Paulino (after Obama won the Pacific island territory by seven votes). Paulino beat out Clinton backer Cecilia Mafnas, who was previously the vice chair and counted into our superdelegate count. Evening things out, Clinton picked up the other Maryland add-on: former Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Obama is also expected to pick up the three Illinois add-on superdelegates today around 2:00 pm after the Illinois Democratic Party’s committee meets to officially name the trio. (Note: The Obama campaign announced Kalyn Free of Oklahoma as another super, but we’d already had her on the list as an Obama supporter.) The Delegate Counts: SUPERDELEGATES: Clinton 273-254; PLEDGED: Obama 1,492-1,338; OVERALL: Obama 1,746-1,611. There are 268 undeclared superdelegates. Since the Pennsylvania primary: It's Obama +17, Clinton +11; Since Super Tuesday, Feb. 5: It's Obama +84, Clinton +13; Since Junior Super Tuesday, March 4: It's Obama +41, Clinton +20.

*** Dems win another GOP seat: The questions about the GOP brand and the problems rank-and-file Republican congressional candidates are feeling will continue to linger after the party lost yet another special election Saturday -- this one in Louisiana, where Don Cazayoux (D) beat Woody Jenkins 49%-46 (R) to replace Richard Baker (R). The GOP will be hitting the panic button furiously if the Dems win another upcoming special congressional election in Mississippi district that’s 60%-plus GOP.

*** McCain in the Tar Heel state: McCain, who probably is getting tired of getting the also-ran type of coverage these days, heads to North Carolina, where he's likely to grab some of the media coattails from the Clinton-Obama race.

*** On the trail: Elsewhere, Clinton begins her day in North Carolina (in Greenville) and then travels to Indiana (hitting Merrillville, New Albany, and Evansville); Obama begins his day in Evansville, IN, then goes to North Carolina (for a discussion with workers in Durham) and then returns to Indiana (for a rally in Indianapolis; and Michelle Obama -- like Bill Clinton -- is in North Carolina.

The man who tried to soar above politics has been brought back to earth by the same media organizations that helped fuel his spectacular rise. After more than a year of mostly glowing coverage, Barack Obama is having to defend his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his temerity in not sporting a flag pin, even his arugula-loving, bad-bowling, let-me-eat-my-waffle persona.
Barry can not win the GE.
Barry has the new and shinning baggage that takes him nowhere.
Barry will never ever be able to wash the stink off his past, with all his "close friends" ever present, at his side, behind his back and WRIGHT up front!
Non-stop Rev. Wright by the media ... even Matt this morning ... no mention of sniper fire though.  Seems NBC/MSNBC is STILL choosing to guide the voters with their sensationalism.  So many issues, yet at least half of Obama's time on the Today Show interview was spent on Wright.  Ludicrous!
I took a gas holiday and did not watch morning Joe today. To the economists Hillary said, "Don't confuse me with the facts". Sadly, Hillary's constituency thinks in the immediate moment and does not like "people who are different". Superdelegates know that ignorant racism should not dictate an outcome.  I loved the Guam lore near the beginning of the comments. I am praying that a loss in Indiana will not send Obama's camp into a tailspin. Obama's family looks like a poster photo for family values! Middle-aged, white evangelical female in Central PA.
Dave, the difference is simple.  McCain was not and is not a member of Hagee's church, while Obama was a long standing member in Wright's church.

With that said, I think the Wright situation has been blown way out of proportion to it's actual importance.
PREDICTIONS..... HILLARY WILL WIN BOTH NC AND INDIANA, BIG.
obama elite friends will obviously agree with him to not give SMALL TOWN people a break.

Whats up with olbermann, bashing Hillary going on fox but ignore obama going on fox. olbermann, thats why REAL PATRIOTIC AMERICANS who believe in free speech and an inclusive America stop watching your obama campaign show.

The CBS/NYTIMES polls are always polling obama campaign staffers just like newsweek and NBC polls, so nobody takes them serious or thinks they are a credible outfit.
Leanza-
I suggest you watch the MTP interview from Sunday.  I think Senator Obama completely answered all the questions regarding Rev. Wright.
It's nice that you are concerned about Senator Obama's former pastor. Maybe now you can move on to other things.  For example did you know that 48 soldiers died in Iraq in April? How many others were injured?
There was a Chuck Todd article talking about coverage of front runners wherein he pointed out all the talk about Rev. Wright while virtually ignoring Hillary's much more serious "obliterate" comment.  Gee, Chuck, maybe you and your Ace Reporters might have talked about some importat issues once in awhile.
OBAMA has already rebounded in the Gallop Daily tracking poll. He is back up to 49%-45%.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/106981/Gallup-Daily-Obama-49-Clinton-45.aspx

Hillary is the one with electability problems. Obama just had his WORST week so far, and Hillary just won PA... yet Obama is still ahead in the national polls, and he continues to get the endorsement of superdelegates by almost a 2:1 ratio. If she can't catch up to him after going through his worst week, then she never will. The bad news for Clinton - the worst is over for Obama, it's smooth sailing from here on out.

So she can continue to fight until the last primary (and I suspect she will), but it will be all for naught. She can't catch him in pledged delegates, contests won, or popular vote. Period. She will not be the nominee. If she wants to continue to waste her supporters' money, that's her prerogative. But it won't change the end result.
RE: Carole in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. If I'm not badly mistaken, Shuster was suspended for 2 weeks for his comments about Chelsea Clinton. I'm just sick and tired of all the "gotcha" moments. We should be talking about all the problems that this country is facing.
leanza Cornet., have you read todays hoffington post? it says there are those who are either very ignorant, or just pushing untruths, knowing they are untruths, for whatever reason their motivation...
the reason why your candidate has such high negatives is her stubbornness in the face of wrong.
she has carried this same characteristic when she was passing her heathcare bill ( that did not succeed), or when she voted for the war. Now her stubborness in pushing for the tax break reminds me of all the wrongs of the clintons!!!They take advantage of the little knowledge, unfortunately, majority of her supporters have, just to win votes. Do some serious research.
If your candidate humbled herself more, and spoke the truth, not just for the sake of politics..maybe , as a woman , i would vote for her.....
Obama clearly brings a fresh page to this washington games...and honestly, that is what america needs right now.....A man of integrity, not a woman who says anything, at the expense of the electorate to get votes!! Americans, especially hilary supporters, do your selves a favor, do some real research...then decide....the whole world sees through these, and our headlines ( I am in Canada)...are different...we see through this....
Obama is upsetting two entities here - The powerful Clinton machine and the powerful media that has always had a say in positioning the candidate of its choice. In spite of all the negative coverage and cheap shots, Obama still leads Clinton in every category. We've finally found a candidate that the public will not believe the propaganda about. We all have to admit that their are some whites that will not vote for him simply because he is non white..does not matter if he is Asian, Latino or Black, that pocket of uneducated racists will vote for the worst available white candidate to keep the White House :white. So sad. Its almost reminds one of when in Biblical times the people had a choice of whether to spare Jesus or Barabas the murderer, they cried GIVE US BARABAS..so sad.
My husband and I voted on Saturday in NC's Early Voting. The lines were phenomenal! Here is my question - why is there no 'Exit Polling' done during early voting? Here in NC at least 400,000 to 500,000 or more voted between April 26 and May 2. But the Exit Polling is only done on Election Day. Seems like this omission could give a false sense on demographics, etc. Any ideas as to why no exit polling is done during this period? Thanks! (btw, we are white, in our mid-fifties, and voted for Obama)
A new USA Today/Gallup poll out today is disastrous for Obama. He now trails Clinton by seven points and trails her by five on the question of who would be the more electable nominee.

-------------------------------------------------

How about a little perspective here, folks?

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/democratic_primaries.html

Back in high school I was taught about polling.  A higher sample size equals more accurate results.

Gallup/USA Today sampled only 516 likely voters.  Meanwhile, Gallup on their own sampled 1267 voters and got Obama +4.

Kinda puts the damper on that result you point go...by the way, neither is indicative of anything but I guess you won't let that get in the way of a story, eh?
You are really really start to wear me down... BUT I still have enough fight left in me to keep asking all day today - WHAT ABOUT MAGNEQUENCH?!

NEWSFLASH!!!  It is entirely up to the idiot press to stop hyping the Wright story. The viewing audience is sick to death of it. CNN has declared a moratorium on Wright. At what point does msnbc plan to shut it down? After mccain gains the Oval Office?
As a hope-filled , idealistic Obama supporter, I am feeling pretty "bummed" about now. For the first time during this campaign, I believe that the media's baised coverage just might  wrest this nomination away from Obama and give it to Hillary. I mean, it has been Wright, Wright, and more Wright (  I have some ideas about who paid him to re-emerge on the scene just before two of the biggest remaining primaries, but I won't mention that here.) I am appalled that the media has NOT let people know that the Clintons are involved in the Peter Paul fraud case. It is conceivable that she could win the presidency and then go off to jail or at least result in a second Clinton impeachment. Amazing that the media felt that it was more important to cover a nuuty pastor who obviously is NOT in Obama's camp.
I'm particularly disappointed in Chuck Todd.  He was fabulous a few months ago in the early primaries, when he'd get on the numbers and make your head spin.

Now, he does this deadly dull presentation of numbers that are absolutely the worst that can be found for Obama, and the best that can be found for Hillary. Not even criticism of the methods the pollsters use, and why they may differ.

Chuck, even you sound bored.  Are you doing your own reporting, or is someone else telling you what to say?
Again, you only report polling from one pro Clinton place.  You don't know what fair and balanced means.
MSM==free Clinton advertising.

Hillary doesn't need money for her campaign; she has the media. Most all media networks talk about Hillary and in a positive way but when you mention Obama it negative. Obama was great on "Meet the Press" and I see you did a negative sound bite from the show.  Hillary just kept flapping her lips on Stephanopoulos show and she even took control...like a cannon out of control. Do you want someone in the WH that will not listen. If so, kept Bush for four more year. You need to stop with your subliminal subjections about Obama and be fair. Americans we are smart than the media give us credit. Think for yourself and not let the media think for you. I'll see if this will be posted.
Most people in this country want someone with experience; and I'm not talking YEARS of legistlation but years advocating for working class american.  We need a President for ALL of America and I think the choices that Obama has made in his life have proven that he will be divisive.  If you don't subscribe to black separatism then why on earth would you be a member of a black separatist church?
That would be like me saying I've attended KKK meetings for 20 years but I don't support everything they say.  That just doesn't ring true with most people.  I think it's more likely that Rev. Wright's explanation (the guy who's known him for 20 years versus his supporters who've only been acquainted with him for a little over a year) hit the nail on the head when he said that Obama said what he said with denouncing Wright's comments because Obama is a politican and says what he says to get elected.

That makes sense a lot more than Obama's denunciation ONLY after being personally affected.
Joe "Good Morning Joe" STINKS!  He is constantly acting as if Americans are stupid!  Dude, we drink beer, iced tea, and eat ribs on the weekends but we also have a brain.  Elitist, Joe, someone who thinks that he knows America, but can only spout what someone has told him about America.  Oh, and Clinton's nuclear option, I got news for you we won't come back in Nov. we will just sit our butts home.  You see the Clinton campaign has been bought and paid for by those Wall Street elitist, and Obama's has been paid for pay normal American citizens.  So, NO, we won't forgive and forget.  Just like in 2000 and 2004 we will look at the idiots who vote for Clinton and say, "At least I didn't do that to my children!"
What is with MSNBC running the Dan Abrams "special" on Reverend Wright over and over again this past weekend? Talk about helping out Hillary! Your bias was definitely showing.
Go OBAMA!
Listening to Obama on Meet The Press on Sunday, the man has no clue when it comes to the foreign policy, the economy, defense, and on and on. Just more rhetoric and populist speeches from a man that has yet to take a stand on anything. He's just an awful candidate.
So does the Democratic winner of the LA special election (Don Cazayoux) become a super delegate, too? And, if so, who is he leaning towards?

Carole (Fort Lauderdale):
While I think you might have a point regarding Olbermann being for Obama, I think the others are neutral to Clinton-leaning. I think Maddow and Todd are the most centrist of the bunch. I think Maddow would like to see Clinton win, but that hasn't colored her reporting too much; she has been just as willing to point out a Clinton blunder or gaffe as she has an Obama blunder. Todd, on the other hand, is just crunching the numbers, and if the numbers seem to favor Obama, I don't think you can extrapolate his opinion from him reporting that fact. Andrea Mitchell is strongly pro-Clinton, I think, possibly due to personal feelings and possibly due to having traveled with and covered that campaign.

Lastly, regarding Schuster's comment... you would have a point wondering why he wouldn't say the same thing about Obama's children that he said about Chelsea if the Obama's were doing the same thing that the Clintons were/are doing. Let me know when the Obama children are traveling around, stumping for their dad and answering questions at universities around the country. While you may not like Schuster's diction, you cannot complain that he does not say the same thing about the Obamas. The comparison simply does not hold.
What a joy to read this post early in the morning. America is smarter than that, better than that to believe Hillary's pandering.  We all know who speaks from the heart and means what he says. it's Obama!! he's going to win this nomination and the general election and together we will change America and we will change the world!
Obama '08
*** The weekend in delegates: Obama picked up four superdelegates over the weekend, to Clinton’s net of zero.******

The polls matter of course. However, there are tons of them, and they are all over the place.

I'll stake my hope on the only poll that matters at this point. Obama picked up four supers to Hillary's big goose egg!
Mika had become Joe's little messy haired sex symbol. It's disgusting. Tell her to put on some decent work clothes, something other than pouty teen lip gloss and act your age. It's embarassing, and I'm sure her girls would die if they knew what a cave in she's become just for ratings. I hope her dad can talk some sense into her! Bring back Andrea, at least she put Joe where he belonged--in high school!
If anyone read Chuck Todd's big front page article on the MSNBC political page this week-end you would have seen how much real disdain he feels for Obama. It was unbelievable! Shame on Todd who is supposed to be neutral. Very obvious he is pushing Hillary. Someone wrote in Saturday saying that Todd's wife works for McCain which would explain why Todd is for Clinton to be the nominee. Look at Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough. They are so worried for the GOP if Obama gets the nomination that they are Hillary's biggest cheerleaders. I am really getting disgusted with MSNBC. You are so biased for Hillary - now even Chuck Todd.
MSMBC's coverage is becoming a joke - right when it has the chance to be seen as a beacon of light in the mix of all the media reporting.

Your NEED to keep Hillary in the race to sell more advertising yourselves has become blantantly clear and I hope you read what is posted on this site today.  Many of us are fed up with your 'pandering' journalism for the Clinton folks.

And I agree with a post earlier - Morning Joe has become unwatchable.

Please rethink your strategy - we need a solid and reputible place to come for news and information regarding this historic and important race.  Please stop YOUR pandering....

Does anyone else think that Obama has made a BIG mistake by devoting so much time in Indiana, a state he will probabaly not win, and neglecting North Carolina, a state that he MUST win? As an Obama supporter, I have grown concerned about his shrinking numbers in North Carolina, especially because the number of undecideds ( who always go to Hillary) equal his % lead in the state now. If he wins by only a few points, or God forbid, loses this contest, the witch will have enough ammunition to go to superdels and plead her case that he is unelectable. Just my opinion that he should have made sure of a WIN in this state.
What is Hillary's latest lie?

She went on TWO networks this morning and said...

"Senator Obama has said that he expects to win both Indiana and North Carolina tomorrow by double-digits."

THAT IS A FLAT-OUT LIE.  HE NEVER SAID THAT.

SHE IS SO DISHONEST!
Will you stop talking about Right crap. It's getting old and boring. Why don't you talk about
PETER PAUL vs CLINTONS ???????

http://www.peterfpaul.com/

Why don't you talk about that?
Mr. Todd, Isn't the following quote from your report this AM more of a comment on the media not letting go of this issue?  Aren't polls showing the public is over this a ready to move on?  "And then there’s Wright, Wright, Wright. When Obama can get through a TV interview without the name Rev. Wright coming up, that's when he'll know he's out of the woods. So far, he's not out of the woods."
I am sick of news media. They are very manipulative and they want Hillary to win this primary without any vetting. if you all the guts discuss paul Vs Cliton case. that is enough for her downfall. What a shame for this country to shape a liar to be president.I tink this country need another liar to be president so tha he can go  to war once again and kill all innocent people in the name of collatral damage.
Hillary is a miracle worker. She has managed to get every economist on earth to agree on something. That something is that her gas tax holiday idea sucks.
Sorry, but that NYT/CBS poll is WAAAAAY out of line compared to the other polls.  Take the general election polls.  According to RealClearPolitics, here are the latest 6 polls of McCain vs. Obama:
USA Today / Gallup:  McCain +1
CBS / NYT:  Obama +12
Rasmussen Tracking: McCain +4
Gallup Tracking:  McCain +5
CNN: Obama +4
Fox News:  McCain +3.
Certainly looks like CBS / NYT is the outlier.

Similarly, look at McCain vs. Clinton:
You have 5 national polls that range from McCain +3 to Clinton +4 and then you have the CBS / NYT poll with Clinton +12.
i think that Obama shall win.

Clinton isn't cool. :]

GO PENGUINS!
I read an interesting item in Zay Smith's column in the Chicago Sun-Times over the weekend that bares repeating, although not verbatum.  It went something like:

Why is it that Barack Obama is held accountable for anything and everything everyone he has ever known has said in his lifetime, when John McCain hasn't been held accountable for any thing he, himself, has said...ever?
i think that Obama shall LOSE.

McCain is the best!!!!!

Clinton isn't cool. :]

GO PENGUINS!
How is it that a poll that has Hillary up by seven is "disasterous" but a poll that has him up by 13 is "better" than disasterous.  He's up by 150 delegates, polls mean little at this point...and Hillary needs a miracle.  Gallup's other poll has him up by four.  When you need a miracle, THAT is disasterous.

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/

You guys need to work on some words that
When I made calls on behalf of the Clinton camp to Indiana I found that most Republicans are voting Republican for McCain or Ron Paul not Obama. In fact, I only found a handful of support for Obama.

I think Hillary will win Indiana. As respects to North Carolina, Hillary will either win or come close enough to call it a win. Obama's campaign is in deep trouble.  Voters are having buyers' remorse now that we know Obama better.  We now know how inexperienced he really is. His connection to Rev. Wright, the anti-American, combined with his elitist comments about rural voters finally showed us the real Obama.
I love hearing how everyone has finally come to see how msnbc is! Mika is the worst! The best time to watch msnbc is at 8:00 pm. Morning joe should stop being so racist! Do you get it MIKA! She is a horrible person!
The Gallup USA Today poll doesnt make sense,  If you go to the Gallup website it shows Obama up 49-44 on May 4th 2008.  here is the link.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/106981/Gallup-Daily-Obama-49-Clinton-45.aspx
Why its very evident why the media wants Hillary to win after all the media is controlled by about five good old boys who wish to maintain the status quo and I'm sure Hillary made a few commitments to these folks, thats why you saw the sudden shift to pro-Hillary back oh about 6-8 weeks ago.Wouldn't it be nice to see Obama lower the boom on these old boys and split the media/press into fragments so we could get some real reporting for a change....

Turn on the today show this morning and watch Matt
Lauer spend the first 3 minutes of a 5 minutes interview on the Rev Wright. enough already listen
to your on promos for Decision 08 and maybe ask some of those questions.
The USAToday Gallup poll has Clinton leading Obama, but the same polling organization, Gallup, in the same time span reports Obama leading Clinton by a similar margine??????

Sonds like Gallup will claim to be right no matter what the results of Tuesday's election.
the morning schmo show was pro obama until he got too big for his britches and then they slanted to billary's side...but lets be honest, mika is an idiot with no opinion and joe schmo is a rightwing republican who voted for the contract on americans
I voted for Obama - but will NEVER vote for him in the general election.  He wants me to believe that he didn't know Rev. Wright's views?  I am a college and grad school educated -supposed to be the BO group.  Well, I was and am smart enough to brand him a liar.  I will vote for Hillary.  If not, McCain.
