'Obliterate?' Israel can defend itself

From NBC's Robert Windrem
Hillary Clinton has pledged to “obliterate” Iran if it strikes Israel with nuclear weapons (it doesn't yet have). Iran has protested the Democratic presidential candidate's fiery rhetoric as a violation of the UN Charter and asked for Security Council action. Sen. Barack Obama has condemned Senator Clinton's statement.

All the sturm and drang misses one critical point.

Israel does not need the US to counter attack. Israel has the world's sixth largest arsenal of nuclear weapons, behind only the US, Russia, China, the UK and (maybe) France. It can handle ANY Iranian threat on its own, thank you very much.

The U.S. estimates Israel has about 200 nuclear weapons made up of five different classes of weapons. Israel assembled its first two bombs on the night of Nov. 2, 1966. In the Six-Day War, it had two weapons on alert; by the Yom Kippur War in 1973, 20 were on alert; by the Gulf War, the number had reached more than 200.

There are thermonuclear missile warheads on missiles with intercontinental (Jericho II) and intermediate (Jericho I) range, nuclear landmines, artillery shells and neutron bombs to stop assaults across their vulnerable borders, aerial bombs attached to American-made F-15's dispersed and on alert. It has a nuclear target base of nearly 100 targets, which, like the US base, is continually updated and which, like the US, can be updated in near real time. And it has an entire wing of its Air Force, the secret 2nd Wing, to manage it all.

More importantly, Israel has a second strike capability, that is, a capability of striking any enemy even if that enemy has already destroyed Tel Aviv. A single nuclear weapon might able to take out most of the Israeli population, which lives around Tel Aviv, but Israel has enough capability to deliver a society-smashing blow on Iran within hours. Iran would be triumphant, and then incapable of functioning as a society, in very short order.

And there isn't a strategic thinker in the Middle East who doesn't know that, as should Senator Clinton.

The Israelis use a "triad" much like the US, with bombers, land-based and submarine-based missiles, all controlled through a multi-node command and control system. NO enemy can be sure that it can take out Israel's nuclear capability even with the most devastating attack.

Key to that strategy is its nuclear-armed submarines. Israelis bought two Dolphin submarines from Germany in the 1990s (half paid for with U.S. funds) and modified them to carry nuclear-armed cruise missiles with ranges capable of striking any nation that could do it harm. The cruise missiles fit neatly into the subs' torpedo tubes. They guarantee Israel a second strike capability in the unlikely event that its planes and missiles were knocked out in a first strike.

This is a sophisticated command and control system. Blue-green, sea-piercing lasers, developed, in part, at a U.S. weapons lab, can be used to communicate with the subs in so-called "bell ringer" operations. In situations in which war was imminent or had actually started, deployable rockets carrying the lasers would be fired to send the submarines a signal to come to periscope depth for further orders. Blue-green lasers, of the type Israel was known to be developing in the 1980s, can penetrate to 3,000 feet over a range of 6,200-square miles.

Israel and Iran have been involved in a war of words for years (after secretly sharing U.S. technology during the Shah's days). Is there really a need for a presidential candidate to join in?

THAT IS AWESOME!!!!

Vote for Hillary to save the Democratic Party. Vote for Obama to give the keys to the GOP.
Hillary "Republican" Clinton has now officially declared herself as part of the NeoCon club with her offensive "obliterate" remark.  As noted in the article Isreal has the 6th largest nuclear arsenal although it never denies or acknowledges this fact.  Hillary must be getting coached on her foreign policy by Cheney.  We don't need anymore chicken hawks in the White House.

Go Obama!
Hillary Clinton and John McCain sing a duet(with Bush on harmony); "Bomb bomb, bomb... bomb, bomb Iran"
Maybe Hillary misspoke about "obliteration." Just like she misspoke about sniper fire in Bosnia.
Yes Hillary obliterate Iran like you obliterated your campaign after Jan 5.... Smart thinking...Not
George Stephanopoulous is a joke.  Talk about pandering.  She did not even answer one hard question.  George wants back in the white house with Clinton so he can call people from Indiana names when they are not looking again--what a whimp.

This is an embarrassment to the American people.  I was almost as disgusting as "Morning Joke--Joe s." fawning all over Clinton.  This could have made even the most hardened Conservative--puke.

I know it did me.

I'm a republican and I vote for Obama, he's the only one that has guts and intelligence.

McCain has guts, but as his gas tax proves, he has very little intellegence. And he is just too old.

Clinton is not trustworthy, and I don't want her to start World War Three by "Obliterating" other countries.
But, you see, Senator Clinton isn't big on reading intelligence reports...

...so she votes for things like authorizing Dub's private war in Iraq.
This is just lovely monday morning reading...

We need Obama.
Before judging Hillary's remarks, please read the entire answer she gave.  Saying "we would be able to obliterate them" isn't the same as pledging that we will.

CLINTON: Well, the question was, if Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, what would our response be? And I want the Iranians to know that if I am president, we will attack Iran. And I want them to understand that. Because it does mean that they have to look very carefully at their society. Because whatever stage of development they might be in their nuclear weapons program, in the next 10 years during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them. That's a terrible thing to say, but those people who run Iran need to understand that. Because that, perhaps, will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish, and tragic.
I agree that Morning Joe, the Moronic Jerk of the conservative lunatic fringe, is utterly unwatchable.  This above average jerk has never supported the average joes unless they're average joe millionaires or billionaires.  I've noticed that he's had to team up with the beautiful blonde Mika to try to help his sagging ratings but even that doesn't fool us.  He belongs on FOX!

Go Obama!
Excellent point Mr. Windrem.  Your analysis just proves the fact that Hillary is pandering.  She is just out to get votes in any way she can regardless.

Yet, I do not believe that your report will go any further than this blog.  The MSM is not interested in reporting any Hillary problems.  Just Obama problems.
We can all be thankful that Obama will be accepting the Democratic party nomination for President at the convention.  Hillary is a loose cannon.  She is so desperate for Monica's boyfriend to get some more hot intern action, that she is willing to say anything.  How sad that there are people in this country willing to support someone so corrupt for the highest office in the land.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Please pick a female running mate Senator Obama, but not Hillary!
Who are we kidding?

Israel can clean up operations faster then we can....
They have no love of the arabs, so they can be as ruthless as they want to be.....

Iran just better worry about keeping it's two oil refineries working and stop trying to act like a bully.

John McCain will obliterate Billary/Obama.
This is a ridiculous article. Of course the IAF and IDF could launch weapons AFTER Israel has been annihilated by a first strike! The point is that there is something called "deterrence" which perhaps the author should look into? And maybe it helps deterrence to have the strongest country in the world offereing a protective nuclear shield to one of the smallest countries in the world?!! But Obama gets unbiased media treatment right?!! Yeah right..
More bad judgement comming from Clinton.

She doesn't even know how to pump gas.

Can she read?

How did she ever make it as a Senator?

Others wrote her bills for her!

No wonder she was fired from her first job!

America cannot afford another Clinton!

She want the road constuction workers to lose their jobs for her gas tax.

She has not introduced a bill for her gas tax.

She is a liar.

No one can trust a women who trusts Bill Clinton!
It's funny how everyone in the world was up in arms after Ahmadinejad supposedly said he wants to "wipe Israel off the map" (which he denies saying) but no one really cares that Clinton threatened to "obliterate" Iran.  What is the difference between wiping off the map and obliterating???  Clinton sounds more and more like Bush every day - she wants to obliterate another country and yesterday she said she won't listen to the economists on the gas tax because they are "elitists"!!!  She is too dumb to even be a senator, nevermind president.
Can someone help me ... What is the "CW" referred to by First Read ???  Thanks.

Uh oh. Now you've done it. The wraith of the pro-Likkud supporters here in the US is about to come down on MSNBC. Expect about 1000 emails to this site calling you anti-Semetic. The media is NOT allowed to say that Israel has first strike, much less SECOND strike nuclear capability.  AIPAC doesn't like anyone to be reminded of this nasty little secret.  Makes it harder for them to paint Israel as a helpless victim in the middle of all those bad Muslim terrorist states who SOMEDAY may have nuclear weapons.  Makes it harder to get those beaucoup billions of dollars from the US for military hardware.
Nice foreign policy idea Democrats. Let Israel destroy all the Muslim countries in the mid-east. What could wrong with that?
Good. Glad this is finally getting talked about. We don't need a hot-head, war hawk in the office, we've had that already. We need someone who listens to the people, not always claim they are right (gas tax holiday, voting to go to war with Iraq and not apologizing, this obliterate Iran and not apologizing, calling Putin names and not apologizing, lying about NAFTA, Bosnia, CAFTA, etc., etc.), but can claim they made a mistake. When you start threatening other countries, especially when you are not yet president, it sends a really bad signal to the rest of the world. This is a very dangerous person trying to get into the office, why aren't people catching on to this?
