First thoughts: Beginning of the end?

*** The beginning of the end? Is today the last day on the campaign trail? Sure, there are six more contests beyond these two in Indiana and North Carolina. But after today, there will be more undeclared superdelegates (264) and more disputed delegates (366 in Florida and Michigan) for the campaigns to fight over than there will be delegates earned in the remaining primaries (217). Indeed, there's an argument to be made that after today, there are more delegates to be had INSIDE THE BELTWAY than out on the trail. So for all intents and purposes, today is the last shopping day of the primary season for the two Dems to impress the superdelegates on their issues. Can Obama hang tough with white voters, especially after the past two weeks? Can Clinton win any significant chunks of the black or youth vote? Those questions may not get answered fully today, but how each performs in their "road" game demographic tests will go a long way in pushing these supers in one direction or the other.

VIDEO: NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on the expected split decision in today's Indiana and North Carolina primaries.

*** The basics: At stake are a total of 187 pledged delegates -- 115 in North Carolina and 72 in Indiana. Polls open in North Carolina at 6:30 am ET and close at 7:30 pm ET. In Indiana, most polls open at 6:00 am ET and close at 6:00 pm ET, but because some parts of the state are in the Central Time Zone, the official poll closing time is 7:00 pm ET. And just to give you a sense of where the candidates think they’re the strongest, Clinton holds her Election Night rally in Indianapolis, while Obama holds his in Raleigh, NC. Interestingly, however, Clinton seems to be on the upswing in North Carolina, and Obama seems on the upswing in Indiana. Yet both are likely to win on their "home" demographic courts. So what would the Vegas lines be today? Our guess: five points in each state, which should already be considered a perception victory for Clinton. But given the closet superdelegate support Obama seems to have, he's been given the benefit of the doubt with some if he simply wins North Carolina by, well, about five points. You'll know it will be a mediocre to bad night for Obama if his campaign has to talk about who won the most delegates tonight, rather than by how much they won each state.

*** How big is African-American turnout? There’s lots of chatter about the 40% of the early vote in North Carolina being African American. If that number somehow holds through Election Day voting, it would be an Obama blowout. But Obama folks caution that they saw this same phenomenon in Texas and found that they had simply moved Election Day voters to early voters. Other turnout numbers to watch for… Obama's performance among white voters in North Carolina. Will he get 30% or more? If so, he wins. If he drops below 30% of the white vote in that state, he'll be more reliant on a stronger African-American turnout. Meanwhile, in Indiana, don't underestimate the Chicago media market effect in the negative for Obama. Why? Local Chicago TV has been as obsessive -- if not more -- than the national media. No national media outlet, for instance, has asked their news helicopter to hover over Rev. Wright's house. How many Northwest Indiana households saw THAT?

*** Where we stand: Obama leads in pledged delegates per the NBC hard count (1,492 to 1,338), overall delegates (1,750 to 1,611), the popular vote (14,449,123 to 13,965,804), and the total number of contests won (30 to 15). Note: We’re not including Texas in this contest count, given that Clinton won the primary but Obama won the caucus and netted the most total Texas delegates.

*** A few other questions: When is John Edwards going to get his due? In all seriousness, haven't both candidates attempted to channel their best John Edwards in these last two months? That said, it’s also worth pointing out that he and his wife never endorsed, even though one of today’s contests is their home state. That either tells us about their true indecision or their secret fear that endorsing Clinton wouldn't be enough and would hurt Edwards' cred... If Hillary wins North Carolina, will Bill Clinton deserve all the credit? And does this mean the media will begin to scrutinize him again? Just what would his role in a Hillary White House be? And what about those potential conflicts of interests (Colombia, Giustra, etc.)? Our point: With the good of Bill Clinton finding his role and voice can come the bad once the spotlight comes back on… And what message does the National Right to Life's robo-call effort on behalf of Clinton send to undeclared superdelegates on the electability score. NRTL is one of the more aggressive third-party conservative groups in the biz, and they usually are helping to telegraph mainstream conservative opinion on who the opponent is or isn't.

*** And still more questions: When was the last time Obama introduced a policy initiative that forced a debate? Now, part of the reason is that Clinton has been much more adept at finding issues they disagree on, while she hugs anything he introduces proactively. Still, Obama hasn't driven the issue agenda since the days that Iraq was the No. 1 issue… And given that Indiana is an open primary, will we see some solid evidence that Republicans are trying to play games with the ongoing Democratic primary? If Clinton, according to the exit polls, gets more than 50% of GOP voters, will we know something is up? And can we stop calling the dispute over Florida/Michigan the "nuclear" option? When even the chair of the DNC says those two states' delegations will be seated, it's hard to call it some sort of nuclear option. Obama supporters believe it's the nuclear option, Clinton supporters believe it's part of the process. But so does Howard Dean.

*** Down the ballot: Clinton vs. Obama, however, isn’t the only race in Indiana and North Carolina that bears watching today. Both states are holding competitive gubernatorial primaries, and a large turnout by female voters in the Clinton-Obama race could end up benefiting the two women who are running for governor, the Cook Political Report’s Jennifer Duffy tells First Read. In Indiana, Jim Schellinger competes against Jill Long Thompson in the Democratic primary for the right to face incumbent GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels. Polls for this Dem race have been all over the place, Duffy says. In North Carolina, Lt. Gov Bev Perdue and state Treasurer Richard Moore -- both of whom have endorsed Obama -- square off to be the Democrats’ gubernatorial nominee, and Perdue appears to be the favorite. Perdue seems to have gotten more credit for endorsing Obama with black voters, even though Moore endorsed him first. As one consultant told us yesterday, this is NOT the year of the white guy, and we may see that in BOTH states today. That winner will face the victor of a crowded GOP field led by Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory and state Sen. Fred Smith, but it’s possible that no Republican crosses the 40% threshold to avoid a run off. Just asking: How important is Clinton's candidacy to both women running in Indiana and North Carolina and would both be in a position of winning without her?

*** Judicial philosophy day: It’s probably not surprising that McCain picked this day -- primary day in Indiana and North Carolina -- to give a speech on his judicial philosophy in Winston-Salem, NC. The speech, according to excerpts released by the campaign, will certainly please social conservatives, and it also will raise this DNC talking point: that once again on an important issue, McCain -- he of the Gang of 14 -- has taken a position that doesn’t contrast much with Bush’s. "My two prospective opponents and I have very different ideas about the nature and proper exercise of judicial power. We would nominate judges of a different kind, a different caliber, a different understanding of judicial authority and its limits,” McCain is expected to say. “I have my own standards of judicial ability, experience, philosophy, and temperament. And Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito meet those standards in every respect. They would serve as the model for my own nominees if that responsibility falls to me.”  At his speech, McCain will be joined by conservatives like Ted Olson and Fred Thompson.

*** On the trail: Clinton holds her Election Night rally in Indianapolis; McCain, after his speech on the judiciary, raises money in Greensboro, NC before heading to Michigan for a fundraiser; and Obama begins his day in Indianapolis before traveling to Raleigh, NC, where he holds his Election Night rally.

Rebels who have stepped up attacks on Nigeria's oil industry in the last month said on Sunday they were considering a ceasefire appeal by U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has launched five attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta since it resumed a campaign of violence in April, forcing Royal Dutch Shell to shut more than 164,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd). "The MEND command is seriously considering a temporary ceasefire appeal by Senator Barack Obama. Obama is someone we respect and hold in high esteem," the militant group said in an e-mailed statement.
Does anyone know why Obama took his name off the ballot here in michigan?
Hillary didn't so the rules didnt state he had too. so it was something more then just following the rules.
Let's hope the voters of Indiana and North Carolina are smart enough to not be fooled by the elitist panderer Hillary "Republican" Clinton.  I got a real laugh out of that Youtube video depicting her as Darth Hillary.  Considering her recent inflammatory remarks about "obliterating", "nuclear option" and "crushing OPEC" it's no wonder she was compared to George "Wrong" Bush on the Daily Show and Colbert Report last night.

Go Obama!
I did not know until yesterday that Chuck Todd’s wife worked on the McCain campaign.  He should refrain from any further roles of punditry, and only be limited to strict analysis of the numbers game.  Right now he is nothing more than a pimp for the marketing/advertising brass at MSNBC who secretly are for Clinton and a protracted fight to the convention.
Chuck, NY (Sent Tuesday, May 06, 2008 9:14 AM)

While I agree that MSNBC has gone grossly anti-Obama/pro-Clinton the last month (other than Keith), in a political "kill the man" game as Chuck Todd pointed out, instead of being even in coverage of ALL the candidates so that we could make a fair judgement.  His wife is not a Republican consultant, in fact the opposite:

From http://www.maverickstrat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2&Itemid=5

"Kristian Denny Todd is a seasoned communications professional and a veteran of numerous successful Democratic campaigns. She recently served as Senior Communications Strategist to U.S. Senator Jim Webb’s 2006 victory in Virginia where she directed all earned and paid media strategy on behalf of the candidate. Webb’s victory tipped the control of the U.S. Senate back to the Democrats. She joined Steve Jarding and Jessica Vanden Berg in creating Maverick Strategies and Mail providing direct mail and consulting services for Democratic candidates and progressive causes."
Can Obama hang tough with white voters, especially after the past two weeks? Can Clinton win any significant chunks of the black or youth vote?

Obama's favorables among white voters are up 5 points between 7/2007 and 4/2008 while his unfavorables are up by the the same 5 points.

Clinton's favorables are down 36 points and unfavorables are up 17 points among black voters over the same time period.
Oh, how the Obamaites are starting to crack - watch them whine.
Hillary Clinton is UNELECTABLE

In earlier national polls, she ad a NEGATIVE RATING of 54 %

How can you win if 54% view you negatively ?

In that same poll, 62% thought her dishonest and untrustworthy

How can you win if 62% of the American people KNOW YOU'RE A LIAR ?

Look at her gas tax scam...
She's counting on people being idiots
She's hoping people are too dumb to understand the issues

We've had 15 years of liars in the White House
15 years of scandals and cover ups
15 years of selling out the American people

I hate to say this but last nite when Chris Matthews looked straight at the viewing audience & said Americans wanted to keep hearing about wright, he reminded me of Hilliary under sniper attack!   A new low for him!
As another said,

"Clinton AGREED with McCain on staying in Iraq for 50 years!! This is the full transcript of the CBS 2005 interview:
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_22005.pdf

Huffington post has this story too!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/05/clinton-in-2005-i-agree-w_n_100168.html"
Now that the media has painted the Democratic race about the color of a people skin when it comes to voting, the GOP will be holding the White House again.
Once Hillary said that the “PLEDGED” Delegates can be swayed to her side, that officially removed Florida & Michigan from the table. Actually that just adds to the reason why Hillary’s cry to not disenfranchise the voters was just one of her SNIPER FIRE LIES. She doesn’t care about those people. She just cares about herself. Yes, you should seat them BUT it should NOT influence the final tally since RULES ARE RULES! Everyone agreed to the rules.
What happened to journalists and journalism? It seems to me that they are not in the "reporting" business but in the "entertainment" business.

Reporting has become a lost art.
It seems that the mainstream media view a win for Obama in NC and a win for Clinton in Indiana as essentially a tie. This is easy conventional wisdon, but it is wrong.  Obama has a lead in the delegate count of 154 pledged delegates and 139 delegates including the Superdelegates. A tie for Clinton is in reality bad news for the her campaign.

Before NC and IN vote, there are approximately 410 delegates left to be chosen in primaries/caucuses.  After today, there will be about 210 delegates left.  Therefore, if she ties today, she has to make up the same ground among a smaller pool of remaining delegates. (i.e. she will need a higher percentage of the remaining delegates).  Thus her chances of winning the nomination actually fade if there is a tie today.

Hey Chuck;

""Before an urban myth gets out of hand, I just want to let  folks know that my wife has never worked for McCain. She's a Democratic consultant who most recently worked on Jim Webb's campaign. Whenever she has worked on a campaign that I've had to talk about publicly, I've either refrained from going on about it (most of '06) or made sure I mentioned by wife's association before delivering any commentary. This business has a lot of conflicts of interest; I'll let my work speak for itself but just realize folks, none of us are in the tank for anyone other than the viewer and explaining what we believe is happening at that moment in time.""

We appreciate you letting us in on this item.

Now give us some commentary on why: if "Wright" is a problem for Obama,  Hillary's Pastor and The Fellowship are not problems for her.

Also; why is the Paul v Clinton Civil Fraud Trail not something that the Republicans would use against the Clinton Campaign in the fall, and more importantly why have we not heard all of the detailed "Play by Play" on this from MSNBC? You guys may be right that this is a "non-story"; but the public has nothing to go on here but what they can get from the internet. Can you guys help to set everyone's thinking straight? That video tape is going to be on every republican ad if Hillary somehow gets the nomination!

Who do you predict will win the North Carolina Democratic Presidential Primary?

lol ... Chuck Todd defending his integrity... Good for you Chuck.
I'm for Obama and even though I don't agree with you sometimes, it's not fair to attack your integrity. You have always been honest with us.
Your friend Joe Scarborough on the other hand is relentless.
Could you please tell him to stop talking down on Obama.
It's OK to be pro Hillary ..  no problem ... but Joe talks about Obama like he's a little kid.
RESPECT him thats all.
cheers.
"And can we stop calling the dispute over Florida/Michigan the "nuclear" option? When even the chair of the DNC says those two states' delegations will be seated, it's hard to call it some sort of nuclear option. "

-----------------------------------------------------

Differences:

Howard Dean has not promoted the idea of giving Obama zero votes in Michigan--Clinton is promoting this.

Howard Dean has not emphasized the idea that popular vote counts more than delegates--Clinton has.

Combine these differences:  NUCLEAR FALLOUT.

---------------------------------------------------

It's true the Clinton plan is not 'new news'; it's been talked about for quite some time.  But the press has, up until this week's 'going nuclear article' treated it like it's some far-off-fantasy-plan.  Now the time is here--and Clinton's crew is openly embracing this insane plan.

The DNC cannot act to show favoritism over a candidate.

But it CAN & SHOULD act ouf of SELF-PRESERVATION of the organization itself.  If a candidate is allowed to manipulate the rules to obtain this win, it will mean IMPLOSION of the Democratic party.

           <<NUCLEAR WINTER>>
All you bitter Obama supporters with your liberal, elitist attitudes and responsible for every Democratic Party loss without a Clinton on the ticket in recent memory should just go home and clutch the same Bible from which Reverend Wright and Michele Obama apparently preach.
Last night on Hardball (which I've basically stopped watching since Matthews jumped in the tank with Clinton and Rendell (obviously Chris needs Eddie to hold his hand when he tries to run for Senator in PA)flat out admitted that they've been hammering the Wright story because it's been good for ratings. That just made me want to vomit. They've basically been throwing grendades at Obama and then sitting back and saying, "gee, let's see how his polls do now." Unbelievable. Now they can count their ratings minus this one viewer.
Obama and his silly little Victories?? Small grains gathered from sand.
He won SMALL STATES and caucus with a large AA population.
He can not seal the deal or take the states needed in the GE.
He is unelectable in the GE.
I will never vote for a newbie, wanna be, inexperienced guy who has been shoved down our throats daily.
Never going to happen. Win, lose or draw!
I find the worry about the blue collar vote not being for Obama less than a convencing argument for Clinton. Chuck, why don't you take a look at the risk of her not gaining the progressive, black, and youth vote? Which poses the highest risk for the Democrats?
In short, we see one candidate supported by political machines, rusk belt traditional unions, and a strong bubba factor. The other campaign dependent upon youth, new unions, the progressive wing of the party, and indpendents. The choice is one of the past or the future.

*** The beginning of the end? Is today the last day on the campaign trail?

One can only dream Chuck ,Mark & Domenico.  One can only dream.

I certainly hope this is the end.  I'm tired.

Chuck,  I'm very concerned that MSNBC has not covered or mentioned Hillary's comments about going after OPEC!! This is very serious and potentially very damaging to the U.S.  How can these comments go unreported?  I'm unsure what to think when so much attention is made about personal, religious issues, and little attention paid to the issues that actually matter to us.  You know this election is going to have serious consequences and is a serious matter, beyond ratings.... please provide some feedback.

By the way, your wife's politial career should not be an issue, you can stand proud.  I have watched all the pundits speculate and pontificate but I always listen to you for the reality check.
in this particular election cycle, the superdelegate system has become the (second) closest thing to oligarchy we've ever had in this country (besides the supreme court). it's time to stand up and demand that the DNC remove this most undemocratic system from the party!
Why the gas tax holiday is GREAT for Obama!

1.  It takes the conversation off Wright.

While some media outlets are still hyping Wright, there is growing evidence to suggest that many of us are changing the channel or getting off the website, or turning the tv or radio off.  But with the gas tax "debate", it is moving Wright right off.  Well, thanks Hill for that.

2.  It makes any gains that Clinton makes with working class voters suspect.

Everyone agrees its a pander, but a pander that can have some sway.  So with Barack once again taking the high road (hooray for Barack) and Hillary the low, we won't really know how many people voted for Hillary just to save their $30.  It makes those votes suspect.  Thanks again Hill.  You are undercutting your own (weak) argument on electability.

3.  It reminds us of why these candidates are different going forward.

Hillary has long shown in this campaign that she will embrace any argument that will win the next State, she doesn't have anything she consistently stands for and her campaign's "theme" has changed on a dime.  Barack has stayed consistent on his campaign to change the way Washington does business to move us forward.  He collaborates.  HE IS WILLING TO TELL TRUTH TO POWER.  Something this country hasn't seen in a good long time.

4.  The "us" its reminding (in point #3) includes superdelegates.

They are the power voting block going forward.  They know Clinton is pandering, they get an extra chance to see exactly who she is...not that they didn't know.  But now we all know and they know we know.

5.  Backlash Baby!

I'm talking about the backlash that working class people are going to feel in September, when these voters find that she hasn't delivered.  You don't think voters are going to be reminded about this in Sept. and Oct.  They'll be reminded.  They already think she's untrustworthy and dishonest...now she hasn't kept her promise just in time for the voting booth in Nov.  That's unfortunate.

So even if Barack loses today (among working class voters), he wins.  He wins by continuing to take the high road.

Go Obama!!
Since March the media has been all over Obama. Last night I finally heard someone, I think it was on Hardball, talk about the free pass that Clinton and McCain have had. Clinton's Bosnia comments never received the same attention that Obama's pastor has. I mean let's be honest here. Clinton flat out lied about Bosnia, Obama goes to church where a pastor has said controverisal and wrong things. Lying gets a pass but someone else has to explain their association with every person they have ever met and why he does not agree with the outrageous things the guy has said. It has been almost 8 weeks of this nonsense and Clinton talks about nuking Iran and gets a pass. She proposes a gas tax holiday, that everyone knows there is no chance will pass and if it did Bush would veto it and she goes on TV and is unchallenged about it. McCain actively seeks the endorsement of right wing pastor who openly politics from the pulpit and deserves to lose his church's tax exempt status and almost no coverage and no challenge to McCain. He cannot keep the Suni and Shia straight and last week he told the world we went to Iraq to fight for oil and again no media coverage and no challenge. Let's face it we all know Fox is not fair and balanced, that's a joke but it's pretty clear that one candidate always has to get kicked to keep up the election hype. So instead of covering the issues, we get all this other garbage. We have known since Super Tuesday, that Obama will be the nominee. The media has aided Clinton in her quest to damage Obama and our chances in November in order to hype their ratings.
I was a very fond supporter of the Clintons during the 90's. I think that the level that they have stooped to try and steal this election with the Help of the media is unreal. I think that every voter in the Democratic party whether an Obama supporter or a Clinton supporter , needs to listen carefully The Clinton campaigns metrics as presented by keith Obermann last night on Countdown. Clinton supporters will be mad but the fact is that these have been arguements from the Clinton Campaign . The truth of the matter is that this campaign has spun so far out of control, that the surrogates for this campaign are just as loose with telling lies as the candidate herself. This campaign is so removed from reality that it almost is believable until you sit back and listen to what they say. The Clinton spin machine has been so fine tuned these past few weeks. After Hillary accused the media of being biased against her. The media has responded by doing everything to prove her wrong. The media has gone to the point of overplaying any and everything against Barack Obama. While giving Hillary a free ride. Nobody has aired anything on the Paul vs. Clinton case , very little coverage of her being ready to Obliterate Iran and the fact that such loose words are damning. Nobody is calling her on her supposed taking on OPEC.This woman has become so far fetched, her talking points are straight out of the WCW playbook. The many characters that she has claimed to be like, except herself suggest to me. That Hillary Clinton is such a bad product that she has to relabel herself as something else other than herself.  She has become a Republican in my eyes, all smoke and mirrors and if that doen't work she will kick sand as well. So I have to say this in closing The Charm and Glimmer of The 90"s Clintons has worn off. What is left standing their  Lying Liars and the Lies they tell so well.
Chuck T-

Can FR provide $$ numbers for April?  Seems as though this 'news', readily available last month, is being suppressed by the campaigns.  My guess is Obama received less, but that Clinton is way, way broke...suspect she is dying for a 'win' so that she can hit up old ladies again tomorrow.

Unfortunate 'wife's job' comment at the top of post; this said, I would certainly like some light shined on the connection between the $$ connection between ALL media 'money' people and the actual talking heads.  Seems fundamentally necessary to a fair filtering of commentary.
this message is for mary lee from Atanta
get a life a$$ I'm sure you're you know what i mean, look yourself in the mirror.
Hillary will win Indiana by a decent margin. Obama will win NC, but not by the double digit margin he once hoped for. I only hope the superdelegates wake up, vote for Hillary, because Obama will not win the general election against McCain...I know soooooo many democrats who say they will never vote for Obama if Hillary isn't the nominee, and instead, will vote McCain.  Its a true fact...and we have the nastiness of the Obamabots to thank for this.  You are the devisive element here, not Hillary.  I am one Hillary supporter who will never ever ever vote for the racist Obama.  Yes, racist, because he's getting 99% of the black vote which shows blacks vote for him just because he's black.
Apparently I am not the only one who sees the blatant bias in the media.....Surely you "journalists " won't be dissing President Obama in January when he takes his oath of office.  I can't wait to watch you take your feet out of your mouths then.  OBAMA '08
"Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran." If the democrats do not get their act together to untie and oust the republicans, that's the theme we'll be hearing for 4 more years and that's unacceptable. When did the price of oir skyrocket? After we went to Iraq. We need to support our troops by getting out.
As of this morning, Barack Obama needs 273 delegates to end this nomination process.

Super Delegates:  Today is your day!

I can't wait to watch Hillary's final speech later this week as she boards the plane back to New York and away from the national stage.  Can't wait.
"This business has a lot of conflicts of interest; I'll let my work speak for itself but just realize folks, none of us are in the tank for anyone other than the viewer and explaining what we believe is happening at that moment in time."  Chuck Todd

We're supposed to believe this statement? Chuck Todd just lost more credibility. What goes around, comes around.  Because of the media's lack of integrity during this campaign, they will receive what they deserve, no support.
Hey Andrea in NY.  You're not the only one that stopped watching 90% of the MSNBC shows!  I bet there are quite a few of us.

from your neighbor in CT.

YES WE CAN!  (supporting our Tarheel and Hoosier friends!)
I'm a North Carolina voter and just cast my vote for Senator Obama!!! I went on our annual Charlotte Aids Walk on Saturday and saw loads of Obama stickers all over the city!!!!
I am very glad Chuck Todd affirmed his intention to be on the side of the viewers, and not on one particular candidate side. It's too bad we can't just assume today's journalists feel that way. I am already boycotting ABC (because of the debate debacle), CBS (they put Limbaugh on Katie's debut as anchor), CNN (why are they hiring old Bushites?), AND my local news channel which is owned by Sinclair Broadcasting, since they tried to sway voters against Kerry in 2004. To think I grew up revering Cronkite, Mudd, Rather and Peter Jennings. Today's news organizations are loaded with right wing propagandists, its frightening. But I still trust First Read (sorta.) And I love it when you call me part of the Elite. Obama '08
OMG, I forgot to mention (thanks for reminding me Chuck first poster) that Keith Olbermann was GREAT last night on his changing metrics.

YAY for Keith and YAY for CT, the 12th state on the insignificant list.  Must watching for all.

(and to Chuck Todd, there are reasons that I think the coverage has been one-sided one way or another over the past months but I never thought you were squarely showing yourself to be in the tank for anyone, I could not say the same about some of your colleagues, have a good day!)
