McCain promises conservative judges

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- On a day where public attention is being lavished on the state’s Democratic Party, John McCain tried to address forgotten Republicans today at Wake Forest University this morning, explaining why he’s the candidate to trust when it comes to nominating federal judges.

Using key confidence-building phrases like “judicial restraint” and “limits to the scope of judicial power,” McCain lauded the appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, saying he would nominate justices in their mold -- notably leaving out more polarizing Justices Thomas and Scalia.

Flanked by NC Sen. Richard Burr, former Solicitor General Ted Olson and former TN Sen. (and presidential candidate) Fred Thompson, McCain faced many of his critics head on by commending the actions of the so-called “Gang of 14” -- of which he was a member.

The bipartisan “gang,” which is criticized by many partisan conservatives, brokered an agreement not to “filibuster [judicial nominees] unless there were extraordinary circumstances,” McCain said.

“This parliamentary truce was brief, but it lasted long enough to allow the confirmation of Justices Roberts, Alito, and many other judges,” he continued. “And it showed that serious differences can be handled in a serious way, without allowing Senate business to unravel in a chaos of partisan anger.”

McCain went on to criticize his Democratic opponents’ for not supporting the bipartisan efforts to get Roberts appointed, even going so far as to quote a speech Obama gave at the time.

“Sen. Obama, in particular, likes to talk up his background as a lecturer on law, and also as someone who can work across the aisle to get things done,” McCain began. “But when Judge Roberts was nominated, it seemed to bring out more the lecturer in Sen. Obama than it did the guy who can get things done. … And just where did John Roberts fall short, by the senator's measure?

“Well, a justice of the court, as Sen. Obama explained it -- and I quote -- should share quote ‘one's deepest values, one's core concerns, one's broader perspectives on how the world works, and the depth and breadth of one's empathy.’ End of quote. These vague words attempt to justify judicial activism -- come to think of it, they sound like an activist judge wrote them.”

McCain 2008 is very scary.  Living off of his 2000 persona has confused many voters into believing he would be an independent voice in the WH; the Maverick.  However, the truth is in the pudding.  He has warned America of what he will do to the federal courts.  Head his warning and vote democratic in the fall.
This is why Obama and Clinton supporters need to come together after this election.  Do Hillary's older women supporters, champions of women's right, want Roe v Wade to be overturned because of sour grapes?
You have to be kidding.

Among the other disasters which define the Bush-Cheney-McCain administration, what these people have done to the federal judiciary has escaped notice.  Not every appointment is a disaster, but collectively, friends, the courthouse doors in your federal courthouses have been nailed shut, slowly and surely, under this terrible, terrible administration.  It will take 20 years to even begin to fix the damage.

The only real citizens in court are criminal defendants.

Ask any lawyer in the know.
MCCAIN PROMISES CONSERVATIVE JUDGES

..And this is news to who? Oh yeah, the ignorant masses who don't read anything but the tabloids. Come to think about it, that's what First Read has morphed into of late.

Chuck, thou dost protest too much!
Good! That's why I'm voting for him!
McCain has serious problems. He's already the candidate and yet he's still running to the right.
Obama would appoint Judge Jeremiah Wright to the bench.
John McCain is shameless. The whole point of the "Gang of 14" was to PREVENT both types of activist judges -- conservative as well as liberal -- from getting elected.

It's a good thing I wasn't allowed to vote in 2000 (I was 16). I might have registered as a Republican, and I definitely would have done everything I could have to get John McCain elected. I wondered for a long time if he could've made a better president than Bush; now, I'm frightened that he could possibly be worse.
He should be careful what he wishes for, conservative judges might decide that being born in Panama disqualifies him from being President.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population and they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas.  The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, prayer will still be said in school, especially before tests and sporting events.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, the second amendment will still allow lawful gun ownership.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Here are the characteristics that I want in a President.

* Honesty -- I can handle the truth no matter how bad, much better than I can handle being lied to.
* Intelligence -- smart enough to listen to ALL sides of an issue before making an intelligent decision.
* Wisdom -- the insight to know when to change course when appropriate. Sometimes changing positions on an issue based on new facts is not a "flip-flop" but rather the right thing to do.
* Tolerance -- not pandering, but tolerance of those who are different.
* Diplomacy. I want us talking to EVERYONE on the planet (at different levels). The "with us or against us" philosophy has not made the world any safer, but rather more volatile.
* The ability to recognize and recruit the appropriate talent to run each of the various federal agencies, and not fill these posts with hacks who are determined to dismantle or eviscerate them.

And lastly, poise. I want someone who will not embarrass this country while being it's representative, unlike the last 7+ years of the cowboy, frat house, cheerleader who is mocked (rightly) by the rest of the world. I don't care if s/he drinks beer or wine or boilermakers, but they better know which spoon to use at state dinners. So yes, a little bit of elitism will be a very welcome trait.

This time, let's elect someone who better resembles "Cary Grant" in manners than "Lou Costello".
I can't wait for McCain to be President so we don't have to listen anymore to these two dunces from the Democratic party. I am tired of listening to one guy yelling "Hope, Change, Hope, Change" and the other pandering to anyone that will listen to her. It's time to vote to the one that's acting like an adult.
"Activist Judges"....That's quite a well-crafted term.  Rove and Rush have banked on that word and it has served them well.  Ever thought about what it means?  If, it means a judge who snubs precedent, stretches statutory text, and inserts his personal and plitical beliefs into his opinions, then Scalia and Alito are the most activist of the bunch, with Roberts not far behind.  Read some of their opinions.  For example, Scalia is known for citing "history" as a guide to his decisions when he favors a certain outcome.  If however, history has not favored the outcome he desires, he describes the past as "anacronism."  This outcome-oriented double standard is a perfect example of judicial activism.  But, it sure is a cute word that so-called conservatives have used very effectively in their sound-bites.  More of the same...
If McCain forgets all else of a nature crucial to the memory of the next POTUS, ie., why we invaded Iraq, and the difference between Shiite, and Sunni, etc., one thing that is written is stone on his shrunken wrinkled, misfiring brain is his tick like blurts pandering to Conservatives.

No wonder the repubs are shaking in their shoes at the thought of Barack Obama.
The quote from Obama is typical. A judge does not examine "how the world works", he/she examines how the United States works.

We're the greatest country in the world, and I aim to keep it that way.

McCain/08
Phrases like “judicial restraint” and “limits to the scope of judicial power”

What they mean, the Repukes and neo-cons, is they want THEIR judges & their judges restarint/judicial power; not the DEMS.  Don't be fooled any longer by this argument of theirs.
Poor attempt to stay relevant.
Don't worry McBush .. The Obamanation will get to you soon .. we have to put Billary out to pasture first.

In the mean time .. you should release your medical records.
“Sen. Obama, in particular, likes to talk up his background as a lecturer on law, and also as someone who can work across the aisle to get things done,”

---------------

Can anyone name one thing where Obama ever worked across the aisle to get something done? By my count, that number is currently stuck on zero.
Careful there John. Using Obama's own words to define him is racist.
come on lil bombbushie, you have been involved in many questionable groups, Keating 5 comes to mind,or your favors you have been questioned about the T.V. mogel that you wrote letters for plus you rode around in his airplane,or the dumping your first wife so you could land the beer baron. This guy has two pastors that have said some pretty outragious stuff. Here is a guy  that dosn't know who we are fighting,or for that matter he said that all of the losses of our brave fighting force was to protect our oil interest. So you want to stay for a hundred years, people be perpared for your kids to be drafted. Then see how fast the war ends. The guy is clueless and needs someone standing near him to correct him when he speeks,
Great, McCain making more promises to further take away our rights in this country. Why can't the right-wing agenda finally wake up and realize that their agenda is not good for this country?

Barack Obama, please lecture us, everyday if necessary. We need to be told what to do!
McCain's message here points out why he is to be considered a "more of the same" type of candidate. His labeling of Sen. Obama's words as "vague" when in fact they are very clear and concise, speaks volumes regarding his efforts to pander to his parties' "Base". It is not hard to understand why many in his own party cannot support him.
McCain did a great job getting conservative judges appointed under George Bush. The Democrats are still trying to find someone that can explain it to them how that happened.
"Blah blah activists judges blah blah... I'm terrified that Barack Obama could completely rout me in November."

http://thepajamapundit.com/
I'm certain by now the haters from the Obama camp have made fun of McCain's name, his age, his wife, and any other personal attacks they can come up with. Immature group that bunch.
You know it is odd that this Old Contankerous Being keeps hanging just close enough to get media attention and interject himself into the news cycles of the day. My Friends the problem is that with too many conservative jobs or to many liberal judges the playing field becomes unbalanced. My Friends , hold up why does this crusty old man keep acting like we are friends. That is the problem with him he assumes we are friends which gives him the right to assume he knows whats best for me. Same as that Hillary woman she knows whats best for me even if she has to lie and steal to get it for me.
Hillary McNeoCon = John McBush = war in Iran
Go big John!! All the way to the White House!
In other words McCain is saying who needs this smarty pants in the White House making all these high flutin remarks about them thare judges. Yeah! What we need is another Bush.... NOT

Hopefully today ends the Dems nominating process and we can get down to the GE and start contrasting the differences between the real Canidates.
Three words as reason alone to vote Democratic - Supreme Court openings.

As much as I can't stand the woman (okay loathe is a better word), if Clinton were somehow able to secure the Democratic nomination I would have to consider voting for her if it would keep McCain out of the White House.

And if the reverse were true (Obama nomination), one hopes Clinton supporters would exercise common sense and vote in their best interests - Democratic.
Turning back generations of a liberal Supreme Court will be a main pillar of John McCain's presidency.
THIS is the major issue in the campaign. What conservative Justices do on the bench ripple far and wide. I am most afraid of Gramps getting the nod because of this issue. I am so happy he came out and said this so now the media can get some traction on this and let the American people know that this is the scary part of A McCain presidency.
More mumbling from The Great Obama. Has anyone decoded any part of what he has said so that it makes sense?
“judicial restraint” and “limits to the scope of judicial power,”

the republicans should try selecting judges with those qualities once, or maybe even select a few who realize the constitutions original purpose was not meant to be what you wipe your shoes off on when entering a court room
Joe Biden won't let that happen, they will be "Borked".  Make him the chairman of the Judiciary Committee again( If John somehows becomes the president.
I believe McCain is a good man. But I believe his principles have been eroded in his pursuit of the Presidency and for that I am truly saddened. As someone who remembers Iran-Contra and Reagan's "I have no recollection" mantra (only to discover that he did indeed have Alzheimer's) it scares me that perhaps Senator McCain may already be inflicted with early dementia and that is why his judgement and values seem in contrast with how he presented himself in the past and how he has changed positions on his positions so many times. I do not say that with a mean spirit, but with genuine concern.
I just took The Bush-McCain Challenge -- an online quiz to see if you can tell the difference between George W. Bush and John McCain. Check it out, and see if you can do any better than I did!

Zieg Heil, John.
He's spouting Alito and Roberts?  I guess he definitely likes Scalia also, even though he doesn't have the guts to say it.  At least Obama has the guts to say how he feels, even when it might not be politically sound.  I hope McCain keeps talking - because this only convinces me more not to vote for him.  I hope it convinces all the other voters who get angry and say if their democratic candidate isn't picked they will vote for McCain!
ST Holmes, Minnesota.....

You said vote for the one that acts like an adult.  I think you meant to say, because McCain wears adult diapers.  The guy is far beyond an adult.....he's an old man stuck in the past.  His slogan should be:

"Vote for me, I've never had a real job in my life, my opinions and morals were formed over 50 years ago and I still see the world thru those same torture camp sunglasses."
This is exactly how John McSame will untie the Democratic Party.
I love Right-To-Lifers. The only thing that seems to matter is the right to live, not quality of life. Many of the same people who are pro-life are also anti-welfare. You can't have it both ways people!

Obama '08
Anyone who thought McCain was a maverick, moderate, independent republican, this should set you straight...he's a neocon in moderate sheep's clothing!  If not, then he's the biggest panderer flip flopping freak since Romney!  McCain wants conservative justices because he's a cranky old Depends wearing man himself!

McCain as president will mean soiled white house sheets every night, stains on the couches and seats, and that all too familiar nursing home smell in the halls.
Well he has locked in the votes of all those idiots women in that FDLS compounds, who have little FLDS racists like rabbits. All of the rest of you are "screwed", literally> If you get pregnant, tough luck according to St. John. More pandering to religious cowards.
Turning back generations of a liberal Supreme Court will be a main pillar of John McCain's presidency.

The so called Liberal Supreme Court brought us desegretated schools and public transportation, equal rights for women, etc....guess you and the rest of the repukes want to takes us backwards...not on my watch.

Carol, Long Valley, NJ:

I'm sure if you look, there is something similar for Phenomabama and Clingon.  They are both Democrats, so they are by definition hardly distinguishable.

And for all you yahoos who have trouble with McCain's age, I seem to recall the young robust Clintons having all kinds of "memory problems" through the years.  Bill even forgot that he was given oral sex in the White House before eventually remembering it again.  No problem with the sex, but that crappy of a memory is a bit scary, don'tcha think?

Even Phenomabama was a little mixed up recently on that pastor thing.

Republicans,Corporate Stooges and conservative judges forever.
