Obama camp responds to McCain speech

Posted: Tuesday, May 06, 2008 2:11 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
“The Straight Talk Express took another sharp right turn today as John McCain promised his conservative base four more years of out-of-touch judges that would threaten a woman’s right to choose, gut the campaign finance reform that bears his own name, and trample the rights and interests of the American people," Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement. "Barack Obama has always believed that our courts should stand up for social and economic justice, and what’s truly elitist is to appoint judges who will protect the powerful and leave ordinary Americans to fend for themselves."

*** UPDATE *** Here's the Clinton camp's response: “We won't take lectures on the right way to approach the Constitution from Sen. McCain, who voted for extreme conservative judges like Justice Thomas. In an effort to pander to conservative voters, Sen. McCain has signaled his intention to appoint right-wing judges who are committed to rolling back women’s rights and civil rights, elevating the interests of big business over the rights of workers and consumers, affirming executive branch power grabs, and undermining our common core freedoms. Sen. Clinton has a different vision. She will appoint judges who respect the separation of powers, are steadfast in protecting civil rights and liberties, including the right of privacy, and who cherish equal justice under law.”

McCain is no maverick, no independent, no moderate...he's a typical neocon who'll continue Bush's failed policies, and finally drive out country into total ruin.  I hope Hillary wins the nomination, because it'll be a hard pill swallow to vote Obama just to make sure McCain aint prez...it'll be another lesser or two evils.
Right,Obama the "great one" and if you were any more "left" you would be a communist.
Barack, Barack, Barack. Again, you are so wrong. The courts stand for the law, and only the law. Not whatever little politically correct cause you've got going at anyone time.
Talk about straight talk. It's Obama who is not accepting public financing for the G.E. after promising he will.

What a liar.
Goooo Barack, Go Go Barack Obama!
I couldn't agree more. The purpose of the court is to protect the people, not infringe on their rights. McCain will make sure that we LOSE rights, not defend them.

http://www.politivine.com
The laws protect all Americans, equally, and without regard to race, color, or creed. Somehow though, Obama wants to change all that.
The point of conservative judges is to have a Supreme Court that follows the Constitution, instead of trying to rewrite it.
I like that!  Good, direct, honest response to a dishonest man!  He's not pandering and he's sticking to the issues.

I can't wait to see Hillary's response.  "As President, I promise that if I don't get liberal judges then I will repeal the Supreme Count!"
That's right Barack, time to whip McCain's behind after school for his government for the rich, by the rich policies, that is disenfranchising we the people.
Three words: Judge Jeremiah Wright.
Really?  Then why was he so supportive of John Roberts until he was told it wasn't politically expedient? Hmmm...  Sounds like he was before conservative judges before he was against them.....
Woman's right to choose? Sure BHO. But how about everyones right to choose to own a gun, the choice to go to a school, public or private, of their choosing, the choice not be taxed to death by liberals? How about those choices?
If Obama wins the nomination, I can't see how any of her feminist supporters could possibly vote for McCain out of spite. Roe v. Wade will definitely be overturned after he appoints a couple more justices like Alito and Scalia. McCain is also against women's right to sue for pay discrimination because it will jam the courts with "frivolous" law suits like the one brought by the woman who had been cheated out of equal pay for her entire career.

As for those small-town folks who think Obama is an elitist, they might not be so pleased with the corporatist judges similar to Chief "Justice" Roberts whom McCain will be appointing to the Supreme Court to defend the interests of corporations against private citizens. They'll find out who the REAL elitists are.

It's about time that somebody clapped the elitist title on the RICHEST candidate in the race.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population and they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas.  The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, prayer will still be said in school, especially before tests and sporting events.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, the second amendment will still allow lawful gun ownership.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Go Barry, Go!!

He's just getting warmed up for the fall campaign.  McCain won't be getting a free pass then.
McCain disgusts me
You go Obama, obviously the campaign is much better at multi-tasking than me.  I am sweating out the votes (who could focus on McCain now!!) and its only 2:30...thankfully I have to leave my house and go out soon.

Barack the vote!!
If McCain did not want to face Hillary then why is he only attacking Obama now?

She voted against Supreme Court Justice Roberts too... but not a word about her.

Seems the GOP really wants Hillary to win so they can face off with one of the most divisive politicians in America. I mean, look at what she has done to the Democratic Party so far, imagine the damage she will do to our nation.
And there you have it. SC appointees for the left wing wackos revolves around the abortion issue. No other issues matter to liberals like Obama.
We don't need any more conservative lunatic fringe activist judges that willk steal our rights and freedoms and allow crooked politicians in the White House to cover up their dastardly deeds the way Bush and Cheney have done.

Go Obama!
Conservative Justices? You mean old stuffy white depends wearing justices...like McCain...who is a doody head!
I'm also realizing, another reason NOT to vote for Clinton.  Anyone super-sick of her analogies and characterizations...her race car analogies this morning and all the personalities she's assumed (Rocky et al.).  Just think of four more years of that...yeeech!

Its enough to make you cry out for the straight talk express (oh, not that guy either!!)
This is a bit off the subject, but not to much.

The patient loyalty African Americans have given to the Democratic Party, for many, many decades, though we have been largely taken for granted, and we knew it, has long been rewarded, but under our radar.

It took Barack Obama's candidacy to bring forward the opportunity for us to see that we are a force to be reckoned with, apprecated, and respected, just like every other Dem demographic.

G-D has given us power we never dreamed could be possible. The power of real equality within our chosen party.
Ehh, Barack, the "extreme right wing" Supreme Court affirmed the McCain/Feingold campaign reform law. It was in all the papers, not sure how you missed it.
Scalia and Roberts think it is okay to torture someone. ..and for corporations to run our politics.   Well done John McSame.

http://infogiant.wordpress.com
Vote for McCain and...

1. women lose all reproductive rights
2. all civil rights eroded
3. executive branch gains so much power, the judiciary does away with congress
4. presidency is selected by the courts not the people
5. warrantless searches are allowed unfettered
6. torture is legalized
7. blacks to the back of the bus
8. extermination of all gays is approved
9. like McCain, I just crapped in my pants typing this.
An activist judge is a poor judge. Anti-American even.
If that's the case Anne Sullivan, then please advise all of us on the difference between a conservative and a liberal judge. The Law?
Liberal Democrats. It's all about abortion, all the time. Talk about a one issue party.
So, I see the Right To Life has come out in full force today and accused both Democratic candidates of being in favor of killing babies.  What a narrow-minded view.

You're obviously, then, missing the point of the First Amendment and what it REALLY means.

Freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press, and the ability to petition government are all nice on face value but there's something bigger that all of the above encompasses...

...as citizens of this country, I am not subject to your beliefs and you are not subject to mine.

Just because I believe in an alternative such as adoption doesn't mean I should be allowed to have a say for someone else.  Who am I to decide for you what you should do if you have an unplanned pregnancy?

It is each individual woman's decision on what she should do...at which point it is between her and God.
Democracy means majority rule, but, it also means protecting the minority from the tyranny of the majority...the latter is the role of the courts, and sorry neocon repukes, it is clear that the terms conservative justice is a euphamism for justices who will turn back the clock on civil rights all the way back to Jim Crowe and back alley abortions, remove all corporate accountability, enhance the executive branch above the legislative, end separate of church and state, and legalize the mass killing of all gays.  I will never vote for a candidate who says he'll only appoint so called conservative justices...whatever.
Obama tortures us each time he speaks.
Does this not scream four more years of George Bush?
McCain sounds like he is trying to lose.
So... lets see... if I am reading this correctly... the Staight Talk Express led by John "W." McCain will lead us in one direction... straight into an economic depression and into World War III.

We need balance on the Court... something that the Bush administration is working to destroy every day...

Bush=McCain=Economic and Diplopatic Train-wreck
Number one reason I could never support BHO. He thinks unelected judges should make the law. He also opposed Roberts for no reason other than politics. He's the king of the shamsters and politics the old way. You knuckleheads who think he's going to change anything ought to get new prescriptions.
Three words: Judge Jeremiah Wright.

Yo, pinhead, it's called "Checks and Balances" meaning that federal judges go through confirmation hearings.

Learn it, live it, love it!

Looks like the immature haters from the Obama camp are out in full force today. Isn't it about time you got to your summer jobs kiddies?
You can say that again. no matter what anyone says (Clinton supporters especially women who will not vote for Sen. Obama once he is the nominee) McCain is not the answer. Once upon a time I thought that McCain was an OK repub. Now he is showing that he is willing to Pander to Gdub and the far right in order to win the nomination. He will appoint far right judges, he will continue the tax cuts. And if the rich people have to pay more in taxes so be it. The only thing it will hurt is whether they can get 6 new cars or maybe just 4, while the rest of us struggle just to maintain the broke down honda we have in the drive way

If you are a democrat or a republican with a heart and a brain you know that Mccain will only be bad news. Hillary is definately a slight lesser of two evils, but the only real choice is Barack in 08!! B/c i want a future for my children.
Hello Ron in Tx......I disagree.  Barack Obama's funds are the purest form of public finance:  it is taken in in small increments, from the PUBLIC, over and over and over and over-----it is the epitomy of PUBLIC finance
Carol, Long Valley NJ - do you have your responses all written up and ready to go? Getting them from moveon and dailykos perhaps?

Has The Gimmick candidate announced she and Bill will travel to Iraq to suck up the oil, store it in their cheeks to get through Customs to help save the American people .00005 cents yet?

Hillary Clinton, The Gimmick Candidate
Bill and Hillary, The Gimmick Family
Do and Say Anything ‘08

Obama is the best thing that is happening to this country in a long time. I am over 60 yrs. with over 30 in the military and a combat veteran. I see many people being led by phony patriots and pandering idiots who want to run the country.  If one just lisyens and watches Obama they will see truth personified. (Oh, by the way I am also white).
Right,Obama the "great one" and if you were any more "left" you would be a communist.

FREE AND THE BRAVE (Sent Tuesday, May 06, 2008 2:19 PM)
********************************************************

I see... so apparently some relics of the Cold War are leftover and stalking the message boards today.

*sheesh*

Oh well.  It could be worse - 'Free And The Brave' could be claiming that Obama is a Muslim and attended terrorist training camps - or some other ignorant sh*t like that.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
There are no "checks and balances" left in our ‘broken government’ and if McSame wants to appoint more Supreme Court judges like the current installations of Bushco; Alito, etc., this country will surely become (if not already) a DICTATORSHIP as opposed to the intended DEMOCRACY.  Bushco has gotten a good start in the Dictatorship appointing him as CHIEF DICTATOR and if you want that to continue, then by all means vote McCain because another DICTATOR is in the wings awaiting with bated (and bad) breath!
Here's another interesting fact about McCain that the corporate media apparently doesn't want  you know about: His close friendship with the convicted felon and Hitler-lover, G. Gordon Liddy.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/05/g-gordon-liddy-john-mccai_n_100134.html

And unlike the Rev. Wright, there's no evidence whatsoever that McCain's political views differ from his good pal Liddy's views, although I suppose McCain isn't as  big a fan of Hitler as Liddy is. If Obama had a pal as evil as  Liddy, the media would be harping on it for weeks and for hours every day until Obama was forced out of the race.
And there you have it. SC appointees for the left wing wackos revolves around the abortion issue. No other issues matter to liberals like Obama.
Yolanee Bringston, Ponce, PR (Sent Tuesday, May 06, 2008 2:27 PM)

*****------*****

The "abortion" issue revolves around three major issues.  The Right To Privacy, the Rights of the Individual and States Rights vs Federal Rights.  If it makes you feel any better, substitute all those for the shorthand of "Right to Choose".

We ALL (left, right and in between) agree that abortion should be rare, it's the Democrats who also want it to be RARE and SAFE for the woman.

Meanwhile, our courts treat the rich better than the middle class and the poor, all stated goals of the rich white men who represent the power behind the Republican Party.  But I'm sure that you knew that.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.

Obama is the best candidate but if by some way HRC manages to steal (I mean win) the nomination.  She will have my vote, just to keep this man out of the WH!
You all need to remember that Conservatives LOVE judicial activism and they desperately want the judges to legislate from the bench but only on their issues.  Take for example Oregon's physician assisted suicide law.  The people of Oregon voted in referendum to legalize physician assisted suicide.  Once this law passed what is the first think Conservatives and the Bush Administration did?  They ran straight to the court and asked it to be activist, to legislate from the bench, and overturn the "will of the people".  Conservatives LOVE judicial activism but only on their issues.  To claim that they are against judicial activism is the height of hypocrisy.
