Obama gets rock star treatment in House

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Obama was a very popular figure on the Democratic side of the US House today.

He strode onto the floor during a vote when the place was packed and was immediately greeted by wave after wave of Democratic well-wishers, both Clinton supporters and Obama supporters alike, as well as undecideds.

Escorted by Rep. Steve Rothman, who served as a kind of body man, Obama first made his way along the back aisle where he shook hands and slapped backs. One member, Tim Ryan, snapped a picture with a cell phone. Pages rushed over and asked for autographs.

After running the initial gauntlet, he ended up in a place called "The Murtha Corner," where for years Rep. John Murtha has held court with cronines during votes. At first, Murtha -- a Clinton man -- appeared not to see Obama as the senator stood not two feet away greeting well-wishers. Obama was compelled to put a hand on his shoulder, at which point Murtha rose and offered a hearty smile. The two men then engaged in an extended conversation.

Dozens of Democrats maneuvered to greet him. When Obama came to undecided Rep. Jack Spratt, the senator greeted him by literally bending his knee in a kind of modified genuflect. Around that time Obama and undecided Jason Altmire had a relatively long chat.

Meanwhile, down in the well and on the dais, the House was in procedural gridlock. Republicans were objecting to the way a meaningless motion was conducted. For a few long moments, the place came to a standstill as the parliamentarians tried to sort it out and floor leaders sought a resolution. As the dispute played out, the guy who is running on a platform of changing just this sort of bickering in Washington was in the Democratic aisles doing his thing.

Upon emerging, he posed for a picture with several House pages on the grand staircase, under an enormous mural depicting the Constitutional Convention of 1789.

Afterwards, Obama tried to tell reporters that he wasn't there campaigning. It was an important point, because doing so in the Capitol and especially on the House floor, which is still considered sacrosanct in this regard, would be a violation of the rules.

"I was there giving an update to my supporters," he told a clot of reporters who mobbed him as he walked through Statuary Hall on his way back to the Senate side. "I wasn't campaigning; I was saying hello." Which is why he was bowing to Spratt, one imagines.

Asked what Republicans had to say to him on the floor, he said, "They were impressed with my jump shot."

Finally the world is catching up on what we've known for years. The next president of the United States - Barack Obama.
Yes Sir !

p.s Hillary has gone racial again .. What is wrong with her?
The words grace and dignity do not mean anything to her.
She's appealing to the worst qualities in Americans...
She says white people are the only hard working americans?
And they will not vote for Obama ?
What is wrong with this woman?
Seriously !
It's good to be the king.....
Regardless of who wins in November, Senator Obama is for sure a captivating man.

It's not talked about too much, but I'm sorry his mother isn't alive to see her son.

She really did a wonderful job raising him - as well as his grandparents.

I so wish his mother could see him. How proud she would be.

He is the ultimate American story.

Please Senator Clinton, please - stay off the race issues.

Looks like we're back to the goofy rock star stuff again. Well, most rock stars are strung out on drugs and are adored for no apparent reason, so I guess the shoe fits.
He's earned the respect.  He's run a great campaign and didn't throw the available dirt at Clinton.  He's managed his money in a spectacular fashion, strategized brilliantly, pulled together the grass roots activists, and won the popular vote, most states, and delegate count thus far to wide lead.

GOBAMA!!!
Have the Democratic side of the US House has been drinking the kool-aid?  Rock star?

Regardless, loyal democrats lets unite.  08!!
It is about the Supreme Court.
There's a typo in the second to last paragraph--you've got "and" instead of "an."  Just a heads up.
Nothing but net!!!
Murtha must be one of those racist white Clinton supporters that Hillary's talking about...
Yes We Can....all the way to the White House.  Book the Date...Jan.  20th  2009
Typical Democrats. Here you have a woman, Hillary, who has worked all her life at her trade, taken the shots, and done everything so she could move into the position of power. But then a new guy shows up, and the woman is pusehd aside for a man that has no experience, but kind of looks good.

The glass ceiling looks to remain firmly in place for women.
I think Republicans and Democrats will be impressed by his style and grace and overall willingness to bring everyone together to get things done.  He is getting the "rock star" treatment because he is doing things that no one has ever seen before.  Everyone always wants to be the first to see new people, places or things.  I am proud of our country and know we can finally move forward with unity!
Love it! The soon to be president reached out to members of Congress! Excellent!

Come on, you superdelegates! Let's get this thing wrapped up so that he can get on with beating McCain!
ROTFLMAO.  He was just there to update his supporters.  Does the phone not work???  He broke the rules. Of course, rules don't apply to him.  I'm glad he found his way, though; must have been hard since he's been there so few times.  Funny, too, he didn't stay to do any work!
He was definitely campaigning and should be charged with violating the house rules. He has no respect for rules and regulations.
Wow ! I bet Hillary wish she had thought of this
No, of course Obama wasn't campaigning. The Democrats always follow the rules. Just ask Michigan and Florida.
That's the point...who wants a "rock star" for a President!!

The American people are not that desperate!!!

Dear Fellow Americans.

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is and will face very critical and substantial
"Challenges" in coming,
months, years, and decades.

It is very essential that we pick our next
President on the basis of following criteria.

1. A candidate with a clear "Vision and Mission".

2. A candidate with a sound " Character and Integrity"
.

3. A candidate with a evident "Presidential
Temperament" and  " Principled Judgment".

4. A candidate with "little "Washington exposure"
and  "real future and past Voters".

5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather  than
"Tears us down".

6. A candidate not based on past "sexism, racism, and
ageism".

In my professional and personal opinion, the only
candidate who has shown the above qualities and
characteristics is Senator Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First  Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In over time last
interest in "Washington politics".I stopped voting.
Not a good idea under any circumstance, particularly
at present time.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let Washington remain the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are  and
can be.

We need to send clear and candid message to the world
and some 24 hour partisan piosonous hateful media.

These type of media outlets are trying to deprive,
dupe, and derail us from getting it right this time.

I pray and hope that we the American people won't be
part of this deception, seduction, and confusion.

These type of media and pundits are trying there best
to deny us better and replac our past remember some of
our bitterness and differences. { "Our Greatgrand
Nations people are persistently and constantly
subjected to Psychological terrorism" without our
knowledge by these these poisonous hateful partisan
media outlets".

We Americans are should not and would not to allow
these type of media psychologically terrorized,
traumatized and silence us this time. Not this time.

I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President. let
us not get dragged down into racism, sexism and
ageism.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundations,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear or favor.

We can not afford to lose any of above conectins. Let
us stand up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand
Nation for decades to come and regain our world
economic, and power status back.

God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse
people.

Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future
stability, security, safety,sustained progress and
restoration of our due status in this perilous Global
World at the all levels.

Yours sincerely,

More like rock-head treatment. What were the Democrats thinking when they nominated this knuckle-head?
For all the doubters, To be the man you have to beat the man.

Obama just took down the Clinton Machine. The same machine that was the last thing to stop the Republican machine.

He will make nice with blue collar dems & let Clinton exit on her terms.

Then he's going to give McCain the shock of his life.
FOLKS... the Day is HERE.

Welcome to the Obama Era.

I love this Country.
I think it is pretty clear that Obama is going to reshape the face of politics forever.

We have needed someone like him in this country for quite some time, and he could not have come at a better time. This country is need of some serious change and he is going to deliver it.

http://www.politivine.com
$150,000 per year each for all these congress critters, and all they do is shake hands and pat each other on the back. A change is coming, but it doesn't include Obama.
Obama can't be compared to JFK in '60. McCain (naval war hero) has more in common with JFK than Obama. Plus JFK was in his second Senate term and had much more national security experience (his Dad was ambassador to G.B.) than Obama, who has none.

Obama can't be compared to Bill Clinton in '92. Yes, Obama is about the same age as Bill was in '92, and they're both Ivy League. But Bill Clinton was the longest serving Governor in the country in 1992. He was known more for his wonkiness than his speeches.

Obama is fluff. No national security or military experience. Three (yes, 3!) years in the Senate. He's done nothing (working with Sen. Lugar on a bill is nothing to brag about). Buyer's remorse will soon set in among Dems.
Barack Obama is about to make history as the first
Black President of America and the House of Reps
are behind him. It is time for all the Dems to unite
around Obama.

Obama '08
Let's get the ball rolling against McCain.

This democrat is impatient for change!

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
Its time.  These supers need to take a cue from the voters and realize that Clinton's campaign is over.  Now is the time to get behind Obama and begin to fight the general election campaign.
Nice move Sen. Oboma, real classy, bridging the gap, showing it is with diplomacy and discusion and not bullyism and entitlement of support that you will gain the support you need. Its 4am and the eastern skylight is getting brighter, soon the dawn will be here and the politics of yesteryears  would have faded away like a bad dream.I can feel it in my bones, change is on its way and this is a good thing. a very good thing.
I get what you guys are trying to do. I read this on other websites, and they didn't describe it like you did.
From the moment I saw the word "strode" as if to imply that he was strutting his stuff I just rolled my eyes.
He was there speaking with Superdelegates, and decided to go say hi to a couple of his fellow house members. There is nothing wrong with that, and I'm sure Sen. Obama wasn't expecting that type of response.
You guys, please stop weaving your own opinions into news articles. It's just not cool. Or professional.
Like it or not, it seems that the House recognizes the presumptive nominee when they see him.

BRING ON MCSAME!!!

Obama '08!
He should be popular in the House.  He is going to help lots of down-ticket Dems get re-elected.
Pluse, though some may not support him, Senator Obama has never gone out of his way to make enemies.  He seems to be genuinely well-liked.
First Read has turned into Obama-Propoganda-Central....you would make Joseph Goebbles proud!
If I meet Obama, I will say loudly to him:"Shame on you. You are just a good actor and good speecher, nothing else". In fact, I think Obama should go to Hollywood, be an actor or director.

This election is silly. Everyone is saying that Hillary attacked Obama, but do you ever notice how Obama attacked Hillary? And more, he's the one who started the negativ campaign before Oiwa caucus when he's far behind in the poll, but everyone is blaming Hillary. If I were Hillary, I would have leaved Democratic party and form a new party to run for president.
The enthusiasm is refreshing.

Go Obama!
I think he should be out campaigning. Unless there is something we don't know (like the supers pledging support for Obama and waiting for a later time to announce) he should be out trying for every vote. Hillary is out there and, based on news reports, is still the same old Hillary. It is natural for her to do a little race-baiting because WV and KY fall within the demographics that are receptive to that approach. Unfortunately, Billy Joe Ray Bob maintain this mindset after the election is over. Hillary just moves on.

For all you Clintonistas, when do we get the $.185  reduction in our gas price? I haven't heard Hillary say anything about that since Tuesday.
Concilliatory, that's Barack.

He does'nt have a list over which he plans to exact revenge. I do love my candidate. I pray we Americans, and the rest of the world, will have the opportunity to love him as our President.

I believe he will earn it, just as he has already shown his potential for it, by his words, and actions.
".....Afterwards, Obama tried to tell reporters that he wasn't there campaigning. It was an important point, because doing so in the Capitol and especially on the House floor, which is still considered sacrosanct in this regard, would be a violation of the rules.
"I was there giving and update to my supporters," he told a throng of reporters who mobbed him as he walked through Statuary Hall on his way back to the Senate side. ....."

Maybe someone can tell me what the difference is, between "updating your supporters" and campaigning. (?)
It doesn't seem to me that there is any difference between the two.
He violated the rules, plain and simple.
If Hillary did this, Obama-Rama-Ding-Dongs would be screaming from the rafters.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Hillary is making her usual race-baiting and divisive comments.

Hillary:  I really REALLY tried to give you the benefit of the doubt yesterday and hoped SO much that you would have SOME grace and dignity. But I now believe you have too much pathology.

Chuck Todd: in answer to your First Thoughts tag?  No, she is psychologically unable to play nice.

Super Ds: you really need to do some intervention here -- think of it as someone in your family who's a danger to themself and/or others.  Wouldn't you get them some help?
I'm glad he found his way, though; must have been hard since he's been there so few times.  Funny, too, he didn't stay to do any work!
go mccain (Sent Thursday, May 08, 2008 12:58 PM)

Funny, cause John McCain has now missed the last 45 voting sessions, and has the worst voting attendance in Congress right now.  He's had the nomination locked for months yet he has not done his job in the Senate for months now.
The American people and Congress are going to embrace you Obama because you do have a special aura about you. Call it charisma, call it an exceptional personality. Whatever it is just make sure that you sustain it by using it wisely. Use it to lead. Use it to call upon others (friends and foes alike) to assist you to govern. And use it to uplift and to recognize the unique and special quality that exists within every single individal American.

There willl be many who doubt you Obama and who will  try and bring you down now and after you become President. But stand tall and firm, speak the truth and do the best you can to incite people of all backgrounds. If you do you will go down in history as someone who turned the page in this country and who took the Amercian people into a more harmonious, tolerant and successful future.
I thought Sen Obama was against lobbyists. Or is that only some lobbyists. This cheap publicity stunt really diminishes him, IMHO.
the powers that be should tell clinton to keep her mouth shut, she is making a total ass of herself and doing the party harm, I believe she intends to do as much damage as she can to the party, she's selfish and vindictive, always was, always will be
I truly want to reach out to all Clinton supporters.  As a DEMOCRAT first, and an Obama supporter second, this country truly needs a new direction in politics.  Now, I know there will be those who will absolutely not vote for Obama, but then there are those who want a Democrat as the next President; like myself.  Do what is right for the country, put aside all the hate that has built up over the past couple of months and think about your future, and that of your children/grandchildren.  Remember, a vote for McCain is a vote for another 4 years of the HELL this country has faced under George W. Bush, and 4 more years our service men and women will be in Iraq with no exit strategy.  Lastly, we are AMERICANS before anything else.
Irene Brone;

There you go again, as a Hillary supporter, you're thinking that Hillary was entitled to be the next president. This is the USA where every can thrwo thier name in the hat and run for election. THERE IS NO ENTITLMENT.
ugh. so i'm voting for Obama, but i hope he's more than talk and walk, and momentary rock-star-ness. i hope the image of a house in gridlock and Obama just chatting away in the backgrounds is not symbolic of what this all is reduced to mean and what may happen.

celebrity turns me off.
i'd probably throw up if i saw video of this.

enough with the arrogance and let's see some genuine change in the now, not just basking in glory. please work hard and don't let it be about your ambition, but about sincerity at each moment.
It is about time party leaders rallied around Obama.  Now let the Supers get on the wagon.  Barry Obama is our Man, not Bill Clinton.  Come on Supers, show some unifying spirit.
I hoep those who are Clintons supporters are as disappointed as I am the our candidate is trying to divide the country with her race baiting.  I am just tried of it.
He appeared to great, jubilent crowds and appeared to have the youngster vote sewn up...

His name was mcgovern and he lost 49 states...

Irene Brone, Manchester, NH (Sent Thursday, May 08, 2008 12:57 PM)

No, it just remains firmly in place for lying, pandering, pathetic women who refuse to admit they are wrong and will stubbornly stick to a failed position to the very end.

If she hadn't refused to admit she made a mistake on the Iraq vote, refused to admit her health care plan in the 90's wasn't going to work, refused to drop the stupid gas tax holiday issue, etc she'd have won.   But instead she continues to stick to a failed position, to hell with the experts or anyone else, and just shows how its "her way or no way".  THAT is why many don't like her.  That's why I can't stand GW Bush and Dick Cheney.

A woman like Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius could have won, and would be a good choice for VP.
