Obama gets rock star treatment in House

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Obama was a very popular figure on the Democratic side of the US House today.

He strode onto the floor during a vote when the place was packed and was immediately greeted by wave after wave of Democratic well-wishers, both Clinton supporters and Obama supporters alike, as well as undecideds.

Escorted by Rep. Steve Rothman, who served as a kind of body man, Obama first made his way along the back aisle where he shook hands and slapped backs. One member, Tim Ryan, snapped a picture with a cell phone. Pages rushed over and asked for autographs.

After running the initial gauntlet, he ended up in a place called "The Murtha Corner," where for years Rep. John Murtha has held court with cronines during votes. At first, Murtha -- a Clinton man -- appeared not to see Obama as the senator stood not two feet away greeting well-wishers. Obama was compelled to put a hand on his shoulder, at which point Murtha rose and offered a hearty smile. The two men then engaged in an extended conversation.

Dozens of Democrats maneuvered to greet him. When Obama came to undecided Rep. Jack Spratt, the senator greeted him by literally bending his knee in a kind of modified genuflect. Around that time Obama and undecided Jason Altmire had a relatively long chat.

Meanwhile, down in the well and on the dais, the House was in procedural gridlock. Republicans were objecting to the way a meaningless motion was conducted. For a few long moments, the place came to a standstill as the parliamentarians tried to sort it out and floor leaders sought a resolution. As the dispute played out, the guy who is running on a platform of changing just this sort of bickering in Washington was in the Democratic aisles doing his thing.

Upon emerging, he posed for a picture with several House pages on the grand staircase, under an enormous mural depicting the Constitutional Convention of 1789.

Afterwards, Obama tried to tell reporters that he wasn't there campaigning. It was an important point, because doing so in the Capitol and especially on the House floor, which is still considered sacrosanct in this regard, would be a violation of the rules.

"I was there giving an update to my supporters," he told a clot of reporters who mobbed him as he walked through Statuary Hall on his way back to the Senate side. "I wasn't campaigning; I was saying hello." Which is why he was bowing to Spratt, one imagines.

Asked what Republicans had to say to him on the floor, he said, "They were impressed with my jump shot."

Why is MSNBC not writting about the comments Hilary made today? "Middle class americans withouth degrees, Hard Working Americans, White Americans are not voting for Oboma".

She is a racist and the MSM needs to call her on this. Other outlets are running this story why not MSNBC? The blogs are full of comments by AA, White Americans, Latinos and Asians saying this comment is the last straw!!. Why wont you show this.

If Rev Wright sneezes .....its front page news. Whats the deal MSNBC?
I have to ask, what was said?  If it was something along the lines of "how are you doing?"  That could be okay, but anything about his election bid would be out of line.  Would asking how their re-election bids are going out of line?
It looks like plenty of Republicans also were part of the rock start treatment.

"Even Republicans were not immune. Rep. Chip Pickering (R-Miss.) brought his children over to say hello. Obama also spoke with Republican Reps. David Dreier (Calif.) and Jerry Lewis (Calif.). Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.) came running after him, and Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyo.) came over to chat.
-snip-
As Obama worked the floor, House members found that they didn't know what they were voting for. Wording had gotten confused on a bill designed to deal with the housing crisis, and Republicans and Democrats found members on both sides had been voting the wrong way. After some partisan haggling and yelling that seemed to take a backseat to the celebrity performance unfolding on the Democratic side of the chamber, they vacated the vote and held a "re-do."'

Better a rock star than that rock head clinton!  She is a joke--and a bad one at that!
"Here you have a woman, Hillary, who has worked all her life at her trade, taken the shots, and done everything so she could move into the position of power. But then a new guy shows up, and the woman is pusehd aside for a man that has no experience, but kind of looks good."
**********************

You make it sound like this is the mean boys beating up on the innocent woman. MOST voters are women. Obama has the most votes. He would not be where he is today if women did not also support him, so please don't try to paint Hillary as just some innocent victim of discrimination. The fact is, many people strongly believe that Hillary has very poor character. In fact, she has made history in one respect - she has the highest negative rating of any presidential candidate in history. A true feminist should be very upset at her for representing women so poorly. I very much want a woman in the White House... just not THIS woman.
Regardless of who wins in November, Senator Obama is for sure a captivating man.
It's not talked about too much, but I'm sorry his mother isn't alive to see her son.
She really did a wonderful job raising him - as well as his grandparents.
I so wish his mother could see him. How proud she would be.
He is the ultimate American story.
Please Senator Clinton, please - stay off the race issues.

Looks like we're back to the goofy rock star stuff again. Well, most rock stars are strung out on drugs and are adored for no apparent reason, so I guess the shoe fits.

I guess we all have a choice to what group we'll belong, huh?  Here you have the worst kind of the goodness of humans against the worst kind humanity can offer.  I say the worst kind because one could've waited another day to offer that statement.  Oh well, what can I say?  We can't all be the good.

King Bill and Queen Hillary are dead!  Long live the King and Queen!

I agree with you Pat. It is really a shame that Obama's mother is not alive to see what her son has accomplished and is about to accomplish. This is truly America's moment to turn the page. They must give Obama the opportunity to incite the Amercian people to levels of greatness they have yet to achieve.

It does not matter who voted for Obama or for Hillary. Whether White, Black Brown, Asain, Male or Female, they are all Amercians. It is time to eradicate the talk about Hillary is getting the Female and White vote and Obama is getting the Black vote like one or the other were somehow not part of this country or different in some way. Whether White or Black they are Americans. If Hillary won a primary it is because she received the most "American" vote (not the most female or White vote). If Obama won a primary it is because he won the majority of the "American" vote (not the most Black vote or youth vote). Period!
Senator Obama is a "class act" and I look forward to calling him Mr. President.

I am a "hard working typical white grandmother" who loves Obama and my mother, a "hard working typical white great-grandmother" also supports Senator Obama.
My mother is retired and lives on a small pension, my brother and I help her, and I am 59, still working, retirement is not even close.  I am looking forward to a "changed Washington" in my lifetime.
Hillary wake up from fairytale land and get out!! You are divisive and disallusional.  Your time is up!  Barack is the Democratic nominee.  What good are our superdelegates if they are afraid to tell Clinton to get out? Someone needs to do a reality check with her and her campaign manager!
With regard to the comments about the glass ceiling being firmly in place for women - I am a white professional woman and I am horrified that any woman would consider voting for a dishonest, pandering mismanager simply because that disreputable individual is the same gender.  YUCK!  I am voting for Barack Obama because he is a good manager who is willing to tell the truth even when it is not politically expedient.
Poor Hillary-- I agree with Irene-- She has worked so hard her whole life-- she even endured a public nightmare regarding her marraige (I think most women would have run from that one) and she has risen beyond it all always with her eye on the ball-- and here comes rockstar Obama with all that charisma and good form and she looks like she has worked it for all its worth-- its been such a tough road for her-- I am proud of her for sticking it out-- we need more women who have the guts to take up where she left off!! She fought her heart-- and I thank her for it!!
rock star.... my God, this is just embarrassing.
I am angry at the superdelegates for keeping this charade going.
Hillary is done, and won't admit it.  Maybe she feels she can win KY and WV, and steal the FL and MI votes, and bring it 'closer'.  But she is making this a racial thing, and the Dems should really be upset with her, and demand she resign from the race.
Hillary supporters your jealousy is showing. LOL  Now if it had been Hillary "striding" into a room and got the crowd excited at her mere presence you would all claim it was the hand of God himself casting light on the annoited one and it was deserved. LOL

What this tells me is that Sen. Obama is just the POTUS to get BOTH sides to start talking and more importantly doing SOMETHING about the state of our country before they are out on the bread lines with the rest of us mere hardworking middle class mortals. Politically speaking, Obama is new territory that many want to be apart of from the ground floor up both Democrat and Republican. He could have drug the Clintons through the mud (and this particular crowd surely knows the depth of that level of dirt) but he didn't. He still gives her common courtesy and respect even while she tries to cannibalize him at every turn. This is exactly how you deal with people you still will require cooperation and yes assistance from. Everybody uses everybody but it is how you do it and THAT is what sets Sen. Obama apart from Sen. Clinton. Love it!
in the article on msnbc.com's main page, it says that Obama himself said he was their to ask for support of the superdelegates. So why the discrepancy with this blog article? What actually happened? Supposedly he said he was campaigning, which is illegal on capitol hill. What's the true story? Did he or did he not admit to campaigning?
I feel bad for Hillary and now McCain, but that is no reason to denigrate the next POTUS. Their wasn't a glass ceiling for Hillary. She has a lot of negatives and she ran on the wrong campaign. This election was about turning the page and she was pushing business as usual. A woman can get elected but not her. She is negative, divisive, and untrustworthy. That isn't me talking thats the polls. She is dragging this out because she wants to go out ugly. Why should any of us be surprised? And for "go mccain", I got a feeling you are one of the uneducated white males that Hillary relies so much on. If you could read the story says he left the "congress" to go to the "senate" you know, where he works.
lj:

Those comments are just an extension of, "Well, North Carolina doesn't count because it's full of black people . . ." Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. Like the black vote doesn't count?

Or the bit about "Well, he has the support of college students, so you know . . ." Like the youth vote doesn't count?

Same with college educated white liberal activists. "Look those caucus states are full of those damned activists . . ."

I'm sick of the Clintons and just want her to go away.
Irene in Manchester

Wrong.  Hillary lost because she is one of the most corrupt politicians in America.  I could have easily voted for her, if she were not so arrogant about it.  During the nineties she hid billing records from subpoena, fired Federally protected White House employees, and stole furniture from the White House.  Honestly, I still cannot figure out why anyone would support someone like that.  Currently, she is being sued for campaign finance fraud in California.  The only difference between Hillary Clinton and Richard Nixon, is that Nixon had the decency to resign when his corruption was uncovered.  Hillary ran for President!

This isn't about electing a female president.  There are plenty of qualified women for the job.  Janet Napolitano is a good example.  I think Obama should consider Governor Naplitano as his running mate.  Hillary Clinton would be the worst possible choice for a female president.  She has no respect for anyone but herself.  She is a pathological liar and a race baiter.  She won't even keep her word when it is in writing.  She signed documents, agreeing that Florida and Michigan would be disqualified for breaking DNC rules, and then did an about face when she realized that Obama was beating her!

On the subject of experience, Obama has held elected office longer than Hillary Clinton has.  Also, Hillary Clinton led the fight for health care reform in the early nineties, with a Democratically controlled Congress and her husband as President.  Had she sought concensus, it might have happened.  Of course, being Hillary Clinton, it was her way or the highway.  Not only did the plan fail, but the Republicans took over the House in the next election.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
QUESTION... WILL YOU RUN HER COMMENTS ON A CONSTANT LOOP AS YOU DID WITH REV WRIGHT, HER COMMENTS ARE RACIALLY BIAS AND UNWARRANTED... IT ACTUALLY SHOWS A NEW LIGHT ABOUT THE CLINTONS THAT WE (BLACK PEOPLE) DO NOT LIKE AND DID NOT EXPECT FROM THEM........ THAT IS WHY 92% OF BLACK PEOPLE VOTE FOR OBAMA, WHAT IF HE SAID THE SAME THING PERTAINING TO BLACK PEOPLE, MAINSTREAM MEDIA WOULD BE UP IN ARMS..... SO WILL YOU RUN THE COMMENTS CONSTANTLY FOR THE NEXT MONTH??? ITS ONLY FAIR....
Hey, Obama has overthrown the Clinton machine, a couple that apparently scares the hell out of people in D.C. because she has had superdelegates frozen in fear, afraid to endorse Obama because of the now infamous Clinton wrath.  It's like Beowolf.  He has successfully defeated Grendel.

Not to mention he's easy to look at.  Did you see that Time cover?  Oh boy.
