Obama meets with undeclared supers

Posted: Thursday, May 08, 2008 3:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WASHINGTON, DC -- Obama met for about an hour with a small group of superdelegates at a townhouse near the Democratic National Committee this morning.

Among the people believed to be in attendance -- all of them House members -- were the following uncommitted supers: Mike McIntyre (of North Carolina), Zack Space (Ohio), Gabrielle Giffords (Arizona), Jim Costa (California) and Charlie Melancon (Louisiana), as well as several who have already endorsed Obama, including Sanford Bishop (Georgia), Earl Pomeroy (North Dakota), John Barrow (Georgia), and Melissa Bean (Illinois).

Yesterday, after he won big in North Carolina and lost narrowly in Indiana Tuesday night, Team Obama called on the superdelegates who could ultimately pick the nominee to announce their preferences and begin to bring this process to a close. The candidate -- who leads in the popular vote, in states won, and in pledged delegates -- is meeting with some of those supers today in a bid to get them to side with him. Clinton met with several yesterday.

After the meeting, Obama walked with the group about four blocks to the Capitol, as a small band of TV cameras, political reporters, and even representatives from a Japanese network chased after him for comment.

Asked how the meeting went, Obama said: "It's not finished we're still meeting."

Asked whether he had picked up any endorsements. He said: "Patience, guys. How about letting us just walk to the House? I'm sure I will make myself amply available over the next couple of days, so..." Then he turned to people he was walking with and said, "Welcome to my world."

Having provided no juicy quotes with which to send the press rushing off to file, Obama was forced to measure his pace as he chatted with supers and headed up the hill. Camerographers tried hard not to stumble over themselves or each other as they walked backwards, lenses trained on the candidate, microphones hoping to pick up a telling bit of conversation.

At one point, Obama was confronted by a noisy protestor who appeared to be from the anti-war group Code Pink, with whom he had a brief exchange.

"Don't vote for the supplemental," the woman chanted repeatedly as she walked along the edge of the entourage. "Don't vote for the supplemental. Stop the next war now. Bring the troops home."

Woman: "Use that money to bring our troops home, sir."

Obama: "We're working on it."

Woman: "I know you are. Work harder. That's why we need change."

Obama: "That's why I'm running for president."

Woman: "The change we need is to bring the troops home now. That's the change we need."

By this point, Obama had turned his attention back to his companions, even as the fuchsia-clad woman continued to shout, "We don't want this war, we can't afford it."

He made his way up the steps of the Capitol with the Secret Service cutting a path through a mob of shrieking teenagers -- and a few adults -- and spoke briefly outside as a woman in the crowd repeatedly shouted for him to "turn around and wave to the kids, future voters." He turned and waved before disappearing inside.

The woman in pink had made her way to the front of the mob, still shouting "Bring the troops home, peace is cheaper than war."

Staking out Obama
The day began some two hours earlier outside the doors of the DNC. Posted and waiting, the reporters following Obama like me chatted about politics, laughed at the horoscopes in The Onion, and generally bided our time while keeping our eyes peeled for the senator. Sometime after 9:00 am ET, we spotted a police car at the end of the block. Moments later a woman walking toward the front door told us that if we were looking for the senator, she had just seen him walking down the street. We ran up the block to find Secret Service agents, who would not confirm Obama had gone into the building and directed us to stand by a tree, where we waited for him to emerge.

Later, after his stroll to the Capitol, with rumors of another meeting here later, the cameraman and I returned to the car, where I listened to the conference call announcing the senator had received the endorsement of John Edwards' former campaign manager David Bonior.

It's now been six hours since we arrived on the scene and we continue to watch and wait -- as I mourn the slow drain of battery power on my laptop and blackberry -- hoping for another spotting of the man running to be president.

It's another day in the life of a campaign reporter.

Be patient! The race is over.

They're just letting things wind down for the sake of unity.
I can't wait to have a President that isn't a doofus. This country deserves the rock star quality, sharp intellect and accomplished skill set of Barack Obama--we're just so much better as a nation than our current leadership projects.
Sounds very interesting. I guess that it would be hard to be suddenly into this after a lifetime of anonminity. I think he will handle this very well. Good luck Obama!
Slow news day.....

Senator Clinton & Chelsea were heckled & booed in West Virginia today. How much longer is President Clinton going to allow her to be humiliated before he tells her that it is over. I hope it is soon so she can preserve her dignity.
Hillary Clinton announced today the "white voters are moving away from Obama"--Apparently she feels racism is alive and well in this great country of ours.  I'm white and I'm offended.  If the supers aren't offended they should be ashamed of themselves.  When AA vote for Obama I've never heard him say the AA will never vote for a white candidate.  She disgusts me!
Athena, that was just pitiful.  I'm going to chalk that up to a deadline-with-a-minimum-number-of-words required submission. Nothing that you wrote following the third paragraph was even worth reading.
Please voters stop the madness of Mrs. Clinton and vote for Obama
Memo to Woman In Pink...

Switch to decaf!

Did any of the undeclared supers ask Obama why he keeps losing primaries?
Thank you First Read for always providing a variety of perspectives on the political campaign. Between you and Roland Martin from CNN, you have always shown a more objective view on the issues. I always look forward to read your articles.
I'm sure the Japanese supporter wanted a report for Obama, Japan!!!  ::smile::

I have to confess, its too hard to follow all the superdelegate comings and goings now.  I am going to try and just trust that the process will shine favor on the candidates who has followed the rules and who has won the most pledged delegates and who has shown strength on the other metrics too.

And I'm going to trust that in November we will place in office a candidate who embodies true change in bringing this country forward.

Obama for our best future.
[[ This country deserves the rock star quality, sharp intellect and accomplished skill set ]]

In many ways, this country does deserve it. While you're at it, could you list Baracks' accomplishments? Shouldn't take long, at last count, he's firmly stuck on zero.

And as far as haiving a rock star as president, maybe we should just swear in the winner of American Idol. He/she probably would have as much going for them as Obama does. Probably more.
If the race is over, why does Hillary keep running, and Barack keep losing?
I'm a white voter . . . today's Clinton quotes have inspired my sons to come canvassing with me this coming week.

Thanks for creating more white Obama volunteers HIllary.  Way to go.
Again, how can Hillary expect the voter's in the re-
maining states vote for her when there is no way
logically, mathematically or realistically for her
to win the Dem nomination. The numbers speak for them
selves. There is not enough delegates left for Hill-
ary to catch Barack.

If Hillary endorses Barack, soon, she will save some
of her reputation.

Obama '08
I tell you..these are the better times of life. Let's stay focused people!  I am proud to be an American. God Bless America! We are on our way to greater days!

Go Mr. President(Obama)!
Ethics and decorum are moving away from HRC - along with lot of her own money :)

The DNC’s ‘Rules Committee’ offers Hillary a significant advantage  --- 13 of its members have openly endorsed her, and just 8 are declared Obama backers.

FACT:  (A Committee Chairman is Alexis M. Herman, Labor secretary under President Clinton; another is Harold Ickes, the top advisor to Hillary’s campaign in charge of stealing superdelegates; and another is from the Michigan DNC.)

The ‘Rules Committee’ has wide latitude concerning Florida and Michigan.  It could uphold the rules and punishment it and both candidates agreed to initially, or it could --- seat the entire delegation from each state,  split the delegations in half,  or even seat all of the super delegates but only some of the elected delegates.

This is the REAL REASON Hillary is staying in the race.  Hillary fully expects that the ‘Rules Committee’ with its almost 2-to-1 ratio of declared Hillary-to-Obama supporters will go along with whatever she wants regarding Florida & Michigan delegates.  She believes, and probably rightly so, that the ‘Rules Committee’ will seat as many of the delegates from Florida & Michigan as Hillary needs to obtain the 2025 delegates needed to win the nomination.

IT WILL be GRAND THEFT by MANIPULATION of the RULES COMMITTEE.

Obama CAMPAIGN in WV if you do not Hillary wins the perception arguement.  She is not gstting out you will have to force her out. To do this you need to appeal the the WV voters.  If not Hillary still may pull this off. DO NOT LET HER DO IT.
Wow, what hard work - waiting all day for a presidential candidate.  {yawn}
Those classy Obama supporters are just acting in public the same way they act on the internet.Keep up the hissing and booing that just makes Senator Clintons supporters more determined not to vote for Obama.
So she gets booed and she makes a racist comment and no one is reporting it? Anyone else have any additional info on this?
sounds something akin to "just let me eat my waffles."  Rude, arrogant, egotistical.
Nora o'donnell called Hillary  the first credible woman ...Credible to me and most people would mean  honorable, truthful, much integrity....I am afraid Nora misspoke when refering to Hillary with the word "credible"....I am also surprised that the media did not pick up on Bill Clinton commuting the sentence of many of the group called "the weathermen".
Let's get it together...do we really want a liar, true elitist, and someone that has already offended some in the mideast running this country...I am a white 58 year old woman, voting for Obama..angela
Barak Obama should be very vigilant this time.Perilous times requires complte vigilant. Rmember tha HRC is now like a Bull in the China Ware shop. So be xtra vigillant until the battle is won and over.

Best of Luck
Well, Obama has the money to buy the Supers.
Senator Clinton
As an ardent supporter of yours and one who will continue to support you until all votes are counted, I would ask the following:
As unfortunate as it is, it does not appear that you will not emerge as our nominee---that is so unfortunate. It appears that the superdelegates will refuse to see the obvious---that you are the only one who is able to beat Senator McCain in Nov. I know you are a party loyalist; however this election in my opinion has been stolen from you. Stolen by the African American vote (91 %--that is not only absurd but awfully ungrateful to all that your husband worked for over his 8 years in office), college elitists who think that life in just one big party, and affluent liberals. These groups do not represent the core democratic party, nor what it stands for. Change for the sake of change, as the Obama supporters chant is not change. He does not have the experience in neither economic nor international affairs to turn this country around. He will owe many favors to those in the party that have supported him, and they have their own agendas, so there will be little agreement on how to go forward to mead this country. He talks about uniting the party---he will divide the party, and the Republicans will block the changes that are desperately needed. You were our best hope for change.
My guess would be that should he become the nominee, you will ask all of us who support you, to unite with him. With all due respect Senator Clinton, I and I believe many others, even after your request will not do this. I will not take a chance with yet another inexperienced politician who promises change but has no record of accomplishing it. Senator Obama has not earned my respect and he has not earned my vote. You know Senator McCain, you have worked with him for many years. He “may” offer some real solutions to solve our problems---he is not George Bush. I will listen to Senator McCains ideas, and if I am not satisfied with his ideas, I will simply not vote---it is my right to do so, and I will exercise that right.
So my request would be, that should you lose the nomination, acknowledge the result with the dignity that you have always shown and head back to the Senate to complete your term, not run for re-election and do your great work outside of politics.
okay Obama really needs to stop with the arrogant attitude. it's not appealing. "Welcome to my world"?!?!? arrogance & condescension. not cute.
two words: baller status
Does Hillary really want to be president to help the country? Or is she just a poor looser? I heard her say she thinks she is a better cannidate than the other 2, but from the looks of if the Dems don't agree, she is loosing by more than 8 states, popular vote, and deligates..she needs to give it a rest with the swing state crap! Does she really believe that people are really listening to her argument? She is making the Clinton's and Bill look realy bad...it's like she is begging! If it was not for a Republican Radio host. trying to cause problems by sending fellow republicans out to vote in the state she did win IN. which 7% of her vote was republican, she would have lost that one too.
GObama!he prevailed despite the dirt flung at him over the past 2 mths.If Clinton could not put him away with all the negative press he got over the past 2 months,i don't know what else will.
Time for her to concede already.
Pounding the pavement is fine...

Where's the BEEF!!!!

OH..you said Hillary was not in town...cool...
I desperately want a real interview, instead of the usual media hype-questions--the American people do not want their news to be like the Enquirer. What ever happened to people like Edward R Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and Dan Rather? They should be the current reporters' idols, but we see no integrity like that of these people anymore.
Actually, that was a nice slice of life. I hadn't really thought that it is that intense around him, even in DC. It was worth the read.
