The battle over 'bearings'

From NBC's Mark Murray
Is the Obama vs. McCain now beginning in earnest? On CNN today, Obama said this about McCain's statement that Hamas wants Obama to be president. “This is offensive, and I think it's disappointing, because John McCain always says ‘I am not going to run that kind of politics.’ And to engage in that kind of smear is unfortunate, particularly because my policy toward Hamas has been no different than his."

Obama added, “I’ve said it’s a terrorist organization and we should not negotiate with them unless they recognize Israel, renounce violence, and unless they are willing to abide by previous accords between the Palestinians and the Israelis. So for him to toss out comments like that I think is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination. We don’t need name calling in this debate.”

The McCain campaign didn't like the "losing his bearings" comment. McCain adviser Mark Salter responded in a memo: "First, let us be clear about the nature of Senator Obama's attack today: He used the words 'losing his bearings' intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain's age as an issue. This is typical of the Obama style of campaigning. We have all become familiar with Senator Obama's new brand of politics. First, you demand civility from your opponent, then you attack him, distort his record and send out surrogates to question his integrity. It is called hypocrisy, and it is the oldest kind of politics there is."

Salter goes on say, "Obama is complaining about comments John McCain made about a senior Hamas adviser stating that Hamas would welcome Senator Obama's election as president. Indeed, on April 13th, senior Hamas political adviser Ahmed Yousef said, 'We don't mind -- actually we like Mr. Obama. We hope he will (win) the election and I do believe he is like John Kennedy, great man with great principle, and he has a vision to change America to make it in a position to lead the world community but not with domination and arrogance.'"

"The McCain campaign has never suggested that Senator Obama supports Hamas' agenda, but it is more than fair to raise this quote about Senator Obama because it speaks to the policy implications of his judgment. Just today, the president of Iran, whom Senator Obama wants to meet with unconditionally, called the state of Israel a 'stinking corpse.' Iran is the paymaster and state sponsor of Hamas."

hmmmm...I smell the General Election in the air...

*sniff*sniff*sniff*
Such a rant from the McSame campaign... Looks like their entire staff is subject to hot tempered nastiness, not just their brittle, bad natured candidate. This is going to make it such a picnic for cool, calm, grace under fire Barack Obama in the fall. Hysteria, anyone????
"This is offensive, and I think it's disappointing..."

The republican agenda is "offensive" and "disappointing"!
Bombast and bulls**t did nothing for HRC in her lost cause campaign against Obama. You'd think McCain's group would be more savvy by this stage of the game. But I guess they are Cowboys, just like Bush and his White House criminals.
"losing his bearings" - very clever
This is fear mongering all over again.  Is this all John McCain can bring up against Obama?  Game over. Go home McCain, it's time this country is run on common sense.

WOW... did he read WAY more into that, or what???  I watched the interview and took that to mean that McCain was grasping at straws.

I know Hamas is "the enemy," but what the hell is so wrong with wishing someone well, and complimenting them?  Is it all that bad if, even a terrorist group, says something nice about somone?  Is there some unwritten rule that hate and violence MUST continue?

Alright, here we go with the Sen.Obama-is-a-Muslim fear mongering AGAIN.  Come on McSame, you've got to do better than this.

OBAMA, 2008!
Gosh, call me crazy, but why would the mccain camp use a quote - even from hamas - that equates obama with JFK and "vision"?  doesn't this give credence to obama's claim to be able to positively influence bad guys in the world?
Why do I get the feeling that McCain is just like Bush? How did McCain frame his statement that Hamas wants Obama to be president? Was it a full statement  including the context presented in Salter's defense? Or was it just the abbreviated statement?

As soon as Hillary steps aside we can begin the process of landslide victory against McCain - but she needs to step aside now instead of blab about how black votes don't matter.

44 year old white guy -
Losing one's bearings isn't a reference to age, its a reference to direction or course. As always people are always so quick to make assumptions and try to spin the most negative perspective on things. But  McCain made a very clear statetment about Obama that WAS out of line and deserved a response.
BO is not qualified for this most important job in the world. This is not an internship as Mitt Romney put it. BO has serious judgment problems and is too weak to stand for what he believes. His patriotism & experience is in question. BO's supporters are the rudest human beings on earth with no manners and respects to others. Blacks are racists, specially those so called the black leaders. BO can't unite his supporters, how can he unite this country? This will be the first time in my adult life that I won’t be proud of this country if BO becomes the president. I respect McCain and our family will be voting for him if BO is the nominee. Plain and simple!!
I think the problem is that McCain doesn't know the meaning of bearings.  Here it means direction or compass point, John, so you can put the wheel back on.  Wrong bearings, old guy. And if you can remember, tell Mitt too.
I think that this battle against McCain is going to be much easier than supposed.  Joe Scarborough is right.  This is going to be a big year for the Democrats.  I feel cautiously optimistic.
Obama '08
What a nice phrase"losing his bearings", is not offensive to say that, this election is not about racism is about a comonn sense,I do respect McCain , but we don't need another Bush administration in the next 4 years.
First of all Obama is not JFK (not even close) and all the Kennedy endorsements can't make him so.

Obama on foreign policy is scary.  I think his arabic relatives would be very happy to have him in the white house.  He won't be so they can get over it.

Where is the Granny???  Still fuming and recovering from being thrown under the bus, I guess.  She is probably still mad about the comments he made about his mother's race in "Dreams of My Father".

Do president's have to clear FBI security???  If so, can Obama get a clearance.  They should be investigated to the nth degree.

NO OBAMA IN 2008 or 2012 or EVER.
Let's be clear, McCain attacked Obama. Obama responded, and McCain's people are crying fowl. By the way, Hamas hates anyone not like them. If they do not believe what they believe. Say what they say, and blindly follow every command. They are branded as traitors, illegit, renegades who would take down their paper empire. Who do not have the guts to fight themselves so they send someone else's kids to die.

Wait, that sounds like Repubs doesn't it.

Obama 2008, The sound, rational choice.
McCain statement had the intent of being negative about Hamas. Let's not start lying about what he said or didn't say.  We don't want another liar in the pack.  Don't compare Obama to Romney because he is on the side line with all his experience as a businessman and all his money. Evidently, the people didn't think he was qualified to be the president nominee. So he should be the last person to give advice. Romney is trying to be VP.
John repeated what Hamas said and he's a feeble old man ?? Just when I was becomeing proud to be American. Hillery see if you can get those HARD WORKING WHITES to steal it for you
I still think no one has really checked yes we can out enough!!!!!!! look on youtube.
Hah!  McCain that's too funny.  Take a look in the mirror, you left your NAVY hat on.  Now relisten to Obama's comments.  Dagnabbit!
McCain said he would not engage in negative campaigning then did it anyway and we think the "losing his bearings" is taking a shot at his age? I'd rather someone call me "old" than a Hamas suppporter.
To lose your bearings simply means to go off course and McCain did when he renege by resorting to scare tactics politics when he said that he would not.  I hope McSame doesn't cry foul in the GE all the time!

OBAMA/SEBELIUS '08 & '12
I see McCain sitting on a porch yelling at kids to, "Get off my Damn Lawn!"

This guys temper is the issue. I think we will hear A LOT more about this.

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
"..losing his bearings...", hmmm. Perhaps Barack said what he said because McCain is ex-navy? I thought it very fitting, and didn't think about age until the next paragraph when Salter brings it up.
I think Barack can use that tactic going forward; say something innocuous about McCain, then let McCains own campaign "define" the derogatory comment.
Self implosion to follow.
Regardless of what Hamas said, it was a dangerous and misleading thing for John McCain to say that Hamas would like Senator Obama to win the nomination.

Then to get bent out of shape and try to turn the tables on Barack is REALLY the oldest trick, but also what is not so old, and reminiscent of more recent attacks.  Too bad - Mr. McCain, the country and the world is watching as you fall off your highminded straighttalking bus.  Also, in light of what your wife just said recently that you would 'never' do something like that, this is embarrassing, is it not?
Congrats Obama - You are deserving 44th
I always liked McCain for his straight talk but I am very dissappointed that McCain tried to insinuate that BO is like Hamas.  Is McCain turning into another Hillary under the influence of his party.

Hope not.
Huh, you'd think a former POW would have more fortitude than to be so hurt and sensitive over this bearings thing. Mr. Obama has said any number of times that the wheels of the straight talk express have come off...it's not like the McCain campaign had a real tight grasp of their course, or their bearing if you will, with all the flip flopping he does on important issues like the war, taxes and torture.

You will need a far greater grip to beat Mr. Obama in the fall than the one you currently have, Mr. McCain.
So glad the Democrats are finally being exposed for what they are: unqualified to lead, bigoted, elitists with an inborn sense of entitlement. That’s why I pray McCain will win this thing. He may not have been my first choice of Republicans but he’s better than these two embarrassing clowns from the Deomcrats. McCain should win just on his choice of wife, alone. Cindy is a shining star! She’s a charming, accomplished woman, head and shoulders above that whining, unhappy and sour shrew, Michelle Obama. Yuck. Who do you want representing your country as First Lady? Someone who loves America or Michelle Obama? Someone should seriously shut her up. It will be a sad, sad day if Barack Obama wins the presidency.
Note to John McCain--tell your people to quit reminding us that you're an old dude with no clue...m'kay?
There is no need for this minor controversy to escalate into full blown Clintonesq raping and pillaging.  John McCain and Barack Obama are both respectable honorable men and civic leaders.  With Hillary out of the picture, we could actually be witness to a civilized presidential election.
Divisive? Nobody is more divisive than a liberal. You guys have always had your special interest groups, and you have always been separatists. I am so glad this Democratic primary period has really shown the world and in particular the United States how truly divisive you liberals are and how you hate your country. Blacks will always vote for a black, no matter if qualified or not. Femisist will always vote for a women, and gays will always vote for a gay. This is your party, enjoy. I am sure we will hear all your crying in November. Hey but thanks, I have enjoyed watching the battle.
I actually think Salter's memo was pathetic. He's whining about ageism? When you're whining, you're losing. Especially when you're making up things to whine about.

McCain really is Bob Dole.
Don't worry about McCain, he doesn't even know if he's campaigning in West Virginia or North Carolina; thinks we are fighting Iranians in Iraq; doesn't know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites; tried to strangle a congressman and called his wife a c*nt. He'll bury himself on his own! I can't wait for the Obama-McCain debates, should be great!!

GO OBAMA!!
I suppose McCain "Losing his bearings" will be better than what happens in November with him "Bearing his losing."
That's funny, I watched the video clip of Sen Obama making that comment and that's not how he put it at all.

I think McCain's camp is really stretching to put words in Mr. Obama's mouth here.
Unfortunatey how ignorant are we Americans-with all the crisis in our own country and we still want to support McCain..The so called Mavrick has never, never done for anyone other than the wealthy folks in az. If you are white and a middle class American...You need counseling...
oh, here we go... Act II
I suppose McCain "Losing his bearings" will be better than what happens in November with him "Bearing his losing."

Sandra, TN

Very nice.

I'm especially enjoying most of the anti-Obama posts (once I run them through spell-check.  Though, some of them do cause it to crash).  The fear of change is palpable.  And Mitt Romney's support of McCain couldn't be more fitting given that Mitt is the Gilded Flipper who supports John McFlipper.  McCain the Maverick is a sham.  The only time he goes against the Republican agenda is when to do so polls well.

Unlike the anti-Obama people, I don't make predictions as though I'm prescient (ran that through spell-check).  But, I am looking forward to how far McCain runs away from some of the things he's said and done in the primaries to secure the general.

Okay, perhaps 'runs' was a cheap shot.  Is 'walkers' a real word?
Don't get your panties in bunch gentlemen.  Lets hope that the discussion is about issues and the direction this country wants to take  Do you think the government should take care of the your sorry behind?  I for one say "No".  Should we turn and run because it is too hard to fight against the evil that faces us in the world? Again, I say "No".  The choice between Obama and McCain is easy.   I am listed a Democrat, but  the Democratic Party had lost me long ago because they have moved farther left than I can accept.   Obama promises change and I see the same liberal thinking of the past and the current bunch in office. By the way, I am a proud a American who happens to be a Chicano so please don't call me a White Republican.
I am willing to think beyond myself for the greater good for this country and it appears that some of you folks think it should be about you and what you want. That's okay, but be honest and say so.
Wow must have hit a nearve with BO.
me thinks there is more to come on the Hamas, palasinian connection to Mr. Obama.
Well if Iran is calling Israel a stinking corpse surely the future POTUS has to talk to them to bridge a diplomatic solution. That is what the President does or is supposed to do. He doesnt get angry and hide his head in the sand of political discussion whilst rattling a sabre.
John McCain is such hot head.  Somewhere in this process  he is going to explode and do himself in.  Bank on it.  I cannot believe how thin skinned the man is and if he cannot take back what he dishes out then Obama should challenge him on his constant flip flops that are on the record.  Already we see that Clinton is going to be harder to put away then McCain ever will be in November. If anyone is toast it is McCain.
See ya Hillary!

I think the wanted by Mcnever Roe vs. Wade overturn will take care of the female voters.

Obama 08
I'M NOT OLD!! STOP SAYING I AM!!  I'M NOT SHOUTING!!  STOP SAYING I AM!!

NOW, HAS ANYONE SEEN MY WALKER?
Right on, Cathi!  I believe we can do better.  I believe in Obama.
Wow, defensive-much?  It looks like the McCain campaign has their "rabbit-ears" up, to borrow a sports analogy, about their candidate's age.  It's funny that's the first place they went with their reaction, especially since it only reminds people AGAIN of his age.

In any case, it's legitimate to say as Se. Obama did that, in jumping daily between events calling for "strict constructionist" judges and then hopping in a plane to go on the Daily Show (requiring a much different tact), that from time to time John McCain has lost his bearings as he tries to navigate the tough passage to keep the base and fans of his "maverick" political positions happy all at once.  That seems pretty clear from Sen. Obama's statement, and most people would not, consciously anyway, have likely made the connection to McCain's age, but he got the McCain camp to do the work for him.  Shrewd political move, if that's what WAS intended.  I'm not so sure it was.
Wow, they got ugly quick.
