Strongest at top of ticket?

From NBC's Chuck Todd
The Clinton campaign releases that, "several members of Congress released a letter today to other Democrats touting their support for Hillary, saying she is the strongest candidate to have at the top of the ticket in the fall: '[W]e are convinced that Hillary Clinton has the vision, skills and commitment to make the changes our country needs. As Democrats who have run and won in competitive Congressional districts and battleground states, we believe that Hillary is best positioned to successfully lead the Democratic ticket in districts and states like ours around the country.' (Read the letter.)

Here's the letter:

Dear Fellow Democrat,

We are writing to you because of our shared belief in our Party’s principles and our commitment to ensuring that we have the strongest possible nominee to lead our ticket against John McCain and the Republicans in November.

The decision about who to support to be our Party’s nominee is not one that any of us should take lightly. We haven’t. But, after giving this important decision a great deal of thought, we are convinced that Hillary Clinton has the vision, skills and commitment to make the changes our country needs. As Democrats who have run and won in competitive Congressional districts and battleground states, we believe that Hillary is best positioned to successfully lead the Democratic ticket in districts and states like ours around the country.

As you know, Hillary has racked up victories in bellwether states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and now Indiana that are absolutely vital to winning the White House and maintaining our Congressional majority in the fall. Hillary has won the big battleground states by connecting with voters whose support we must have to win the general election. Her victories in Pennsylvania and Indiana were all the more impressive after being outspent by as much as two or three to one.

Pennsylvania was not just a victory for Hillary Clinton. It was also a wake- up call for superdelegates, forcing us to ask ourselves two essential questions: 1) Which candidate can carry the magic 270 electoral votes to win in the fall? 2) Which candidate is most likely to help our fellow Democrats in down-ballot races? We believe the answer to both of these questions is Hillary Clinton.

On the first question, Hillary has shown she can win the all-important battleground states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida even while being outspent. This speaks to her ability to connect with voters we must deliver in the fall, including blue collar Democrats who can sway this election as they have in the past.

On the second question, Hillary has won rural and suburban districts which we as Democrats must carry to maintain our edge in Congress. Of the fifteen districts rated “toss up” by the Cook Political Report, Hillary has now won ten. Of the 20 districts we picked up in 2006 that had gone for President Bush just two years before, Hillary has now won 16. She is strong in the places we must win to hold and expand our majority.

This is a historically close race. The candidates are separated by a mere percentage point or two and the path to victory for each candidate is the same: win in the upcoming states and secure enough pledged and automatic delegates to get to the number required to win the nomination.

The race now turns to the remaining six contests where the focus will be squarely on the economy. Voters in our states and across the country are voting on issues that affect them, their communities and their children’s future. We believe that they will decide that Hillary is the candidate who best understands those issues and has the best solutions to address them.

We Democrats are justifiably proud of both of our candidates, and if Senator Obama is our Party’s nominee, we will enthusiastically support him. But our responsibility is not to choose simply to support the eventual nominee; it is to help select the nominee who is best for our party and best for our country. Our choice is clear: Hillary Clinton is that candidate. We believe she should be your choice as well.

Thank you for consideration.

Sincerely,

Oh jeez.  Can we please have a reality check?  The desired outcome of Hillary supporters is not going to happen without blowing up the party.   The writing is not just on the wall, but on the floors, the ceiling and in every book in the library.

Can we please just stop suspending reality?  Hillary can't win the nomination without blowing up the party and she can't win the election if she does blow up the party.  At this point, it doesn't matter which camp you're in, it only matters if you live in a reality-based world.
We don't care who the people want, who the people voted for.
Go against the people and your own process of picking a candidate and the Democratic party will be viewed as corrupt. McCain will win. Dems in both houses will be done.
Just more lies from the Hillary "Republican" Clinton gang to try to steal the nomination from the rightful winner, Barack Obama.  If she were so damned electable then why hasn't she already won the Democratic Primary?  She has to cry to the supers to save her from her own incompetent lying campaign.

Just another reason for the supers to get some courage and end this primary charade before she hurts our presumptive nominee and helps her ally panderer McCain.

Go Obama 08/12!
you guys need to catch up with ABC News:

Obama Takes Lead in Superdelegate Tally
Hillary Clinton Will Meet With Financial Backers Next Week
By JAKE TAPPER
May 9, 2008 —

Sen. Barack Obama moved into the lead today in the last category that Sen. Hillary Clinton had claimed to have an edge -- support among the Democratic Party's superdelegates.

The Illinois Democrat grabbed the superdelegate lead thanks to a switch by New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne and an endorsement from previously uncommitted Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon.

Those two votes gave Obama a 267-266 lead over Clinton. That is a huge shift since the days when Clinton boasted about a 60-plus vote lead among the party's pros back on Super Tuesday.

Clinton Fights On, Obama Focuses on McCain
While the New York Democrat is refusing to concede defeat and is hoping a victory in Tuesday's West Virginia primary will keep her dwindling hopes alive, Obama is starting to focus instead on his Republican opponent John McCain.

ABC News' senior political correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported on "Good Morning America" that Obama's team is considering using some of his campaign cash to fund ads against the Arizona senator.

His camp is also planning to announce a 50-state registration rally this weekend, a tactic geared to a November election rather than the remaining Democratic primaries.

The rest of the Democratic Party, however, is struggling with how to end Clinton's challenge and worries that a last-ditch effort by Clinton could be damaging to Obama.

They were particularly unnerved by Clinton's comments earlier this week that appeared to be racially insensitive or racially calculated when she said, "Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again."

"This is exactly the kind of talk that is going to make superdelegates nervous," Stephanopoulos said. "Most of the uncommitted superdelegates and party leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are willing to forgo pressuring her to get out of the race as long as the rhetoric stays in tact."

Panetta Calls for Clinton to Concede
Former top Clinton administration aide Leon Panetta told KGO TV in San Francisco, "It's pretty clear unless there's a bolt of lightning, Barack Obama is likely to win the Democratic nomination. She's put up a good fight and put up a good race, but I think there's a time now where she needs to concede and unify the party."

If Clinton decides to fight on, Panetta advised that she "should remain on issues, they shouldn't engage in personal attacks. & Whether the winner wins will depend an awful lot on how the loser loses."

There are indications that Clinton is taking a hard look at her options. She has scheduled a meeting Wednesday -- the day after the West Virginia primary -- with her campaign's major financial backers at her Washington mansion.

Stephanopoulos said there was also "lots of very quiet waltzing behind the scenes with intermediaries representing Sens. Clinton and Obama" to engineer a "dream ticket" with Clinton as Obama's vice president.

"I should say there's an expectation that Sen. Obama is reluctant to go down this road for a host of reasons, but others are making the case this is the most powerful ticket for the Democratic Party," Stephanopoulos reported.

For many Democrats, however, Conan O'Brien had it right.

In discussing the states where the two candidates were favored, the comedian quipped, "Hillary is favored in the state of denial."

Well, la dee, da. No kidding and welcome to the party. They, like many Democrats, see the weaknesses in Obama, and these people are not pleased with their standard bearer being Obama.
WHAT A JOKE!  20 NOBODIES OUT OF THE 435 MEMBERS IN CONGRESS!  NO SENATORS, HILLARY'S COHORTS, SUPPORT THIS RIDICULOUS PLEA!  I'M SURE THAT THE OTHER SUPER DELEGATES GOT A GOOD LAUGH...

DESPERATION IS SO NOT ATTRACTIVE!

OBAMA/SEBELIUS, EDWARDS, RICHARDSON...ANYONE BUT CLINTON!  '08
A few "dead-enders."

Seriously, if this is the case, why is she behind in every conceiveable metric?  Some of which her supporters created?
She did not have the vision to run an effective campaign.

She did not have the skills to properly manage either her campaign finances or strategy.

She does not have the commitment of the large majority of pledged delegates to the convention.

She has become a divisive figure, now at the highest levels of the party.

The party may seek to circumvent the will of the people, but this WILL destroy the party.

The republicans are now rejoicing!

From Huff Post:

'...Obama Now Takes The Lead in Superdelegates Too

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: For the first time this campaign season, Barack Obama has surpassed Hillary Clinton's support among superdelegates, according to the ABC News delegate estimate.

Sen. Obama, D-Ill., picked up two superdelegates this morning giving him a new metric to tout in addition to his current commanding leads in pledged delegates, popular votes, states won, and money raised.

Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., switched his endorsement from Clinton to Obama and Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., endorsed Obama. DeFazio was previously uncommitted.

With these endorsements, Obama has the support of 267 superdelegates and Clinton has 265 superdelegates.

Every news organization's superdelegate count is a little different because it is an imperfect science. Since October 2007, the Political Unit has continuously reached out to the nearly 800 superdelegates to determine their candidate preference. We also reach out regularly to the Obama and Clinton campaigns for their superdelegate lists and work to confirm any that they include on their lists.

Clinton’s advantage among superdelegates was once massive and has been dwindling steadily since Super Tuesday, when she was ahead by over 60 superdelegates.

Clinton’s institutional support from within the Democratic Party allowed her to build a commanding lead in superdelegates over Obama in the early part of this nomination battle.

Despite several rough weeks on the campaign trail, Obama has maintained momentum in picking up superdelegates. Obama has outpaced Clinton at every marker of this campaign since Super Tuesday -- after the controversial comments of Rev. Wright came out, after Clinton’s big win in Pennsylvania and after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries.

Below are the superdelegate tallies, as of this morning, from other news organizations:

16 members of Congress.  That's it?  There are like 206 Dems in Congress.  That's like 8% of Congressional Dems who released the letter supporting Hillary.  Hardly impressive.
What a bunch of idiots. What is the point of repeating it now ? IT IS OVER !
If HRC is supposedly the "best" then why isn't she winning?

Why is Obama blowing her away?

Nice try Wasserman and CO.

Good to now that all of these so called "leaders", all of these elected officials that signed this letter are willing to over turn the will of the voters and steal the nomination away from the person that EARNED IT.

Too bad that it isn't going to work.

MORE DELEGATES.
MORE VOTES.
MORE STATES.
PLAYS BY THE RULES.
DOESN'T WANT TO OBLITERATE ANYONE.
HAS ALREADY WON THIS NOMINATION.

Obama 08
I live in Indiana and everyone that I have talked to that voted for Hillary did so because they wanted McCain to win in November.  How does that make a person the stronger choice?
SHE IN IT FOR HERSELF!

HILLARY HAS TURNED REALLLLLY SELFISH LATELY.. I DONT EVEN THINK WE WANT HER BACK IN 2012..

ITS OVER AND SHE SHOULD BE HELPING HER PARTY INSTEAD OF DISSING THE NOMINEE> TALK ABOUT A SORE LOOOSER!

Seriously. Its time to Unite. If Hillary wont ask you, Then let this democrat BEGG it of you.
These, I assume, are already delcared Superdelegates?

If she steals this nomination I swear to god I'm gathering my family up and moving to Australia.

Obama '08
read the letter. note: paid for by hrc!
Yep... I see the change she's talking about. Selfish Change.

Obama 08
All one could say shame of the Democrat to let that goes out. And I think all the Afro-Americans and no catholic should teach them a lesson this coming election if they push Hillary against the well of the people.
Oh, this does the party SO much good.  We who really desire someone besides McCain in the White House really appreciate the itellectual, intestinal fortitude, not to mention LEADERSHIP, these people are showing.  Why don't they care enough about the USA to see it's just worsening things to STILL try to get the nomination for Hillary.  Be MEN & WOMEN, and let's go forward.  You people are gravely disappointing.....gravely.
Wow, now the Congress is going to try and steal it too? Man, this election cycle just gets better and better!

http://www.politivine.com
Members of Congress can write as many letters as they want. Nothing is going to change, Senator Obama is going to be the nominee. Yesterday in West Virginia, Senator Clinton & Chelsea were heckeled & booed. When  is President Clinton going to tell her it is over? Let her leave with her dignity intact.
The march out of the closet and into the light of day continues for the Hillarycrats.
For these "leaders" it is ok if Obama wants to unify the red states & the blue states, just as long as Hillary can lead the white states.
Again, Obama provides the background for the white stars to shine.
The age of the modern Dixiecrat has arrived and the party of civil rights remains silent.
Yeah !!

After 16 years of dishonesty and lies...
After 16 years of scandals and cover ups...
After 16 years of corruption and incompetence...

The American people want: MORE OF THE SAME !!

Someone to rule us...
Someone to foll us...
Someone to cheat us...
Someone to beat us...

We want crooked Clintons....
you are not helping I want a Democratic White House and you are not helping stop with the divisive letter
My first reaction (upon not reading the letter) was a big fat resounding RIP (hearing the sound of the Democratic party being torn in half) and I thought, there goes the election.

My second reaction (upon clicking on the letter), was seeing that only sixteen congresspeople signed it.

That's fine.  I have no problem with them declaring their continuing support for Clinton.  We know she HAS party support.  Barack Obama has gotten sixteen NEW Congressional superdelegate endorsements since (hmmm, thinking) maybe around two weeks ago (someone can check it they want to).

Support is fine, tearing the party in half...not so good.
She could only get 16 people to sign it? Last gasps of a dying campaign.
The DNC’s ‘Rules Committee’ offers Hillary a significant advantage  --- 13 of its members have openly endorsed her, and just 8 are declared Obama backers.

EXAMPLE: (One Committee Chairman is Alexis Herman, Labor secretary under President Clinton;  another member is Harold Ickes, the top advisor to Hillary’s campaign who is in-charge of stealing superdelegates;  and, another is a member of the Michigan DNC.)

The ‘Rules Committee’ has wide latitude concerning Florida and Michigan.  It could uphold the rules and punishment it and both candidates agreed to initially, or it could --- seat the entire delegation from each state,  split the delegations in half,  or even seat all of the super delegates but only some of the elected delegates.

This is the REAL REASON Hillary is staying in the race.  Hillary fully expects that the ‘Rules Committee’ with its almost 2-to-1 ratio of declared Hillary-to-Obama supporters will go along with whatever she wants regarding Florida & Michigan delegates.  She believes, and probably rightly so, that the ‘Rules Committee’ will seat as many of the delegates from Florida & Michigan as Hillary needs to obtain the 2025 delegates needed to win the nomination.

IT WILL BE GRAND THEFT BY MANIPULATION OF THE RULES COMMITTEE.

Rick Larsen, Super Delegate from WA State, announced today for Barack!
Those congressional people are using their heads.  I didn't see my congressman's name on the list, I am sad to say.

Hillary will be best for American.  She has real plans not just rhetoric.

Don't just HOPE for CHANGE vote for it.  Vote Hillary.
Several members of Congress, actually means, about 3.

Hillary's layed the whip on their backs. She's still thrashing about. I am past seeing her as sad. This has become comical.

As I think about it, she floated the veep idea, the day after Texas, and Ohio.

She is just recycling all of her old arguments.

This is Hillary's death rattle, on steroids.
I just checked to see if either or our representatives (who are both up for reelection in the fall) signed that letter. If she is allowed to overturn the choice of the people watch out.
Those congressional people are using their heads.  I didn't see my congressman's name on the list, I am sad to say.

Rigth the candidate with highest negatives is the strongest candidate.  The candidate that is perceived as dishonest is the strongest candidate.  Keep it up Hillary...Destroy the party.  You can't bully your way to the nomination.  The Rodham crime syndicate should go home to NY, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, etc.  Where did she come from again.
Interesting...No one from MI. joined in on this fiasco?
This is GARBAGE.  Some believe that John Edwards or Sen. Dodd would be stronger than BOTH Hillary or Barack, does that mean we should vote for them instead of the nominee.  The point is these committed SDs' mere opinion of Hillary superiority is worthless.  There are rules to abide by and Obama played by the rules.  The democracy has spoken.  How knows?  It can very well be true that Hillary is the stronger candidate and Obama can lose in November, but that's not how democracies work.

Here's a newsflash: Clinton can lose in November too.  It's not like she was subject to much criticism since she left the White House in 2000.  She's got her "Reverend RWright" dirt that hasn't been poured through because she has not been the frontrunner since February 5.

And besides, if Clinton is the stronger candidate, why is she losing?

These SDs should be ashamed of themselves.  They should fall in line and make sure that Obama wins in November, instead of trying to sabotage his candidacy for Hillary's sake.
I suppose these people supported Hillary's efforts to pull the wool over the voters eyes with her sniper fire and gas tax pandering
So, basically, these representatives want the SDs to ignore the voters and delegates and just hand the nomniation to Clinton becasue she wants it?  Let's remember that these are long-time Clinton supporters who are over a barrel now because they backed the wrong horse.  If Clinton doesn't succeed, and if they don't sacrifice themselves to at least try to make that happen, who's coattails will they ride?  Not Obama's, that's for sure.  There will be no more "machine".  As a Texan, I can tell you Gene Green's support means very little in this state.  And has anyone seen the performances of Stephanie Tubbs-Jones on CNN?  She is as hostile as she is delusional about anything Clinton.  I think we're seeing Clinton scraping the bottom of the barrel here.  And besides, these are not "new" voices for her.  As Obama continues to add SDs and wrap up the nomination, support for Clinton is eroding more and more each day.
i assume these are already superdelegates committed to Clinton.  You should have noted that in your report. No surprise as you seem to be run by the Clinton campaign
That's horrible!  She fails to even TIE in popular vote, pledged delegates, AND number of states won!  Yet she continues to fight to "disenfranchise" the millions who voted for & STEAL the nomination from Obama!

After all is said & done by the Clinton regime, SHE will lose the Novemeber election because of not being able to draw Obama voters, the Black vote, and many of the "intelligently-undereducated" due to her her "win at ANY cost" style of republican dirt-tactics.

What goes around, COMES around, Clinton bunch!!!  The Air surrounding her is chokinly thick from all of the bad karma that she's pumping out & she WILL have to face up to at some point!!!

Looks like I WILL have to move to Canada before January '09!!!  God help us all...

Thanks, greedy people...Thanks alot.
Obama needs to annotate names and ensure he recognizes these personnel during his terms as Prez.
Yawn..
One more thing, on Indiana (and normally I wouldn't quibble but this is not a normal year), you might want to take a look at the later Indiana numbers, seems like the win was a bit narrower than thought.  I saw it down to 11,000 and by less than 1% (someone linked to the official State numbers)...I mean a wins a win, but...
oha yea!! the strongest, please give me a dam break, hill the REP'S already have 1200 pages of crap on your ass, she will make the ticket stronger!! ok if they are dumb enough delieve that, i have a house in the middle of lake michigan for sale!!!
So, are you saying she's just got the endorsement of 16 new members of Congress?  If these are just her supporters, big deal!
NO QUESTION ABOUT IF HILLARY IS NOMINEE..THE DEMOCRATS WIN "BIG". IF OBAMA IS THE NOMINEE..DEMOCRATS LOSE "BIG" TIME AND "BLOW" THE ELECTION..JUST WHAT THE REPUBLICANS HAD PLANNED.
More divisive politics from Hillary and her "BITTER" friends
I am so sick of lies, half-truths, and innuendo that not only Clinton needs to go but anyone still pushing for her needs to go as well.  Lead, Follow, or get the hell out of the way! It's time to unite and not only elect Obama but take more seats away from Rebubbalicans.

Clinton might win but her coattails are short and will get even shorter in four years. Don't forget Bill kept the White House but lost the majority and NOTHING got done. Wake up and pay attention!
What a crock!
This is true, Obama is more of a liability in the GE against McCain, most of the states that he won in the primaries with large black populations are solid red states, and although most southern states have large black populations that favor Obama the vast majority of the total population are staunch republicans.  Democrats need to decide if they want a feel good story or to win the White House, sometimes you can't have both.
