Clyburn on Clinton, Obama

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
National Journal’s Linda Douglass sat for an interview with undeclared South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn. He says a couple of interesting things: (a) If Clinton believes Obama will do poorly with white voters in November, based on how he has done in the primaries, does that mean she believes she will only get 8% of the black vote in November, based on how she’s doing now?; And (b) He makes it very clear that any perceived backroom deal had better not take the nomination away from Obama, because that would devastate young people and blacks. He speaks rather emotionally about his daughter and grandson’s support for Obama.

Here's a portion of that interview:
DOUGLASS: …Hillary Clinton has been continuing to campaign today, yesterday, throughout West Virginia and the other states that she is seeking to win, making the argument that she wins with certain kinds of voters -- blue collar voters, Catholic voters, and Obama does not. Do you think that as she continues to press the case that he can't win, that she's doing damage to him as a candidate?

CLYBURN: Continuing to press the case seems to me to be in search of a self-fulfilling prophecy here. You know, we all know anything that continues to be reinforced in the minds of voters, tends to take on a life of its own. I would hope, as I have said before, that the candidates will continue to press their case on their own behalf. …

LD:  ...She was quoted today in USA Today describing her strengths against his weaknesses, and she said about herself, quoting from a news article, she was talking about a news article, but Senator Clinton said the following -- that Senator Obama's support among working, hard working Americans, white Americans is weakening again. And whites in both states who have not completed college were supporting me. There is a pattern emerging here, she said. What's your reaction to that quote?

CLYBURN: Well, I don't think that carries any more weight than anyone who will argue that the fact that she only got 8 percent of the African-American vote in North Carolina indicates that she cannot get African-American votes in the general election. …. If we buy into that and we buy into the conventional wisdom that no Democrat wins the presidency getting only  8 percent of the African-American vote, then what does that to say for her prospects in the Fall? So I think that we have to be very, very careful with all of this. And I really believe that this is the kind of stuff that I had been talking about with tamping down the enthusiasm of young people, because scores and scores of non-black young people have gotten involved in this campaign this year. They are very excited about Barack Obama, for whatever reason. A lot of it, nobody can really fathom, but it's happened. And I think we would do well, as Democrats, to welcome the support, welcome the reactivation of African-Americans, welcome the re-involvement of young, White Americans, welcome all of these people into our fold and give them some positive messages to carry forward and not keep talking about what may or may not be the other person's drawbacks. …

DOUGLASS: Well, so I have to ask you Congressman, because you are an uncommitted … it's been said by many, and I think it's pretty clear, actually, that the only way that Obama … can get there is with the help of superdelegates. You certainly sound like you are leaning in his direction, why not just endorse him?

CLYBURN: Well, because I'm still House Majority Whip, Nancy is still Speaker, Rahm Emmanuel is the Chair and Steny Hoyer is the leader, and we've all decided to maintain neutrality. Now, I think part of the problem that people have with some of what I've been saying, thinking that it's not really the expressions of neutrality, there's a big difference in being neutral in this race and being proud of one's race. I'm very proud of what Barack Obama's done. When I sat in those jails back in the 60's in South Carolina – dreaming about growing up, dreaming about becoming an adult, dreaming about having children, and grandchildren – I now have a 14 year old grandson, and he is very proud of Barack Obama. I'm not going to sit down and watch anybody marginalize my grandson's dreams and aspirations. And I'm not going to see anybody go out and just absolutely nullify the energy and time that my daughter, youngest daughter, put into Barack Obama's race.

This young lady started going to his office at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, every day after work, staying there to 11, 12 o'clock at night, and apologized to me for having to follow her heart for fear that it might disrupt my neutrality. So when I look at this daughter of mine, I look at this grandson of mine and see the pride in their faces -- I'm just not going to have anybody just tamping that down, and so that's why I spoke up. Because I'm going home on weekends, and I go to these College campuses, as I will be this weekend, I'm going to Voorhees and do the Commencement there, I'm going to Tuskegee in Alabama and do Commencement there on Sunday. These young people are looking at me saying, are you graybeards in this party getting ready to go into some room somewhere and nullify everything we did in this campaign? That's why I started speaking out. I kept saying, let's lower our voices -- Bill Clinton, please chill out. Stop saying things that will upset the most loyal constituency that this party ever had, African-Americans.

Rham Emmanuel endorsed today.
So eloquent! I have much admiration for the leaders in the Democratic party right now. I admire Rep. Clyburn's ability to be neutral but proud. His description of his grandson and daughter are lovely. Cynics talk about drinking the punch and following blindly. What I see is a renewed passion to take responsibility for the state of our nation! There is nothing blind about that. I also admired how Rep. Clyburn addressed the USA today "white" response from Sen. Clinton. Not enough people have been asking her that question... "Given her logic, she would surely lose the African-American vote in the fall. Without that constituency no Democrat has ever won the White House, how would she?"  Answer us that Hillary?
Get used to it - Hillary Clinton and her campaign were vastly over rated.

Now all she reminds me of is a wife who won't accept the fact that her marriage is over. It's pathetic really.
I thought he had switched his support from Clinton to Obama last month?  You said in the first sentence that he's "undeclared".
So Clyburn thinks Hillary's nomination will disappoint blacks and young people.  What about blue collar workers, women, and older Americans?  It is those people who have supported the Democratic party over the years.  Can we not expect some allegiance from our party?  Young people are looking this time at a so-called rock star, blacks are looking at a black candidate (since when have they voted in such large numbers before)so the Party is going to throw the rest of us under the bus?  How could they permit such an unqualified person to run and expect us to support him?  He is not a Colin Powell who would be a viable candidate.  We cannot let this unexceptable person become president.  Even John McCain is a more acceptable alternative to us.  He is more of a centrist.  He is not Bush and with a democratic congress can be controlled.  In these trying times we cannot afford a president-in-training.
HillaryBillaryBully is so selfish that she will rather see McBush winning rather than see the black dude, that came from nothing, become President.Guess what....you are a loser from the worst kind.A loser that cannot accept losing and will go in a suicid mission just to prove her point. You are a sort of a terrorist and such us, you will be persecuted by the American people. You just put an end to the Clinton legacy in an infamous way. You can only dream to be a president like Obama and the majority of the American people have already decided that.So just go away...do not poison the democracy of this Country that for the first time in a long time has the opportunity to have a Leader, a true leader that will fight for all us and will not just feed us lies (sniper fire..gas tax..) just for winning votes. Stop insulting all of us, American people, we do not deserve this. For so long we have been used and missused, for so long we had to bent over and over at the point that we cannot almost get up anymore.WE ARE BITTER with the failed system that over and over has taken advantage of us and bringing us to the point that as one of the most powerful nation in the World we are still facing the hardship of everyday living. Please open your eyes and realize that the time for change has come and do not bs us by saying that Obama will not win in November, because you know how fed up is this Country with the republican leadership. It will take a suicide bomber like you to put a stone on the future opportunity of this Country by voting in november for McBush.OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!!
If Obama went around saying things like..'
."hard working men support me."  They are the base of this party!

Mothers everywhere would be holding their daughters tightly and proclaiming Obama an arrogrant PUKE!

Clinton is an arrogant ass!

I am ashamed of her!

As a mother of muti cultural children I take great offense at her comments and am ashamed of her a a mother and a women!

It is Hillary who is not hard working!

The American public has taken care of her and Bill since they finished college.

They have been on public assistance their whole life and it is time for them to get a job like the rest of the hard working Americans!

Get out Hillary!  Leave America in peace!
How about devastating women, seniors, hispanics, Catholics, working class whites, etc?  How about that?
they are most loyal to whom?Bill and Hillary have worked hard most of there lives to improve there lives  as they have for others. The first thing Obama did was tell fellow blacks how bad they were and there loyalty went out the window. My relatives didnt bring them here. My relatives came 2 generations ago .But the generations that were here worked and died to bring them to freedom.Whites did that.Whites worked with MLK.Blacks that are here are I think a lot better off than those that were left behind.Better off than if they were still in there native country.Obama wants a dialog than lets do it.African Americans and other blacks (they always seem left out)have freedom to prosper ,to travel,to vote,to hold office. They could go back to home countries if they wanted.I hope they feel better off here.I was proud we had made so much progress cause we worked togeather. Along comes Obama and devides the party and country so bad I think it has been sent back decades. Threats of riots if he doesnt win are not in anyones interest. It doesnt hold the interest it did in beginning for sure.It is devisive. This is like Obama sending hecklers to all Hillarys and Bills events to stir up trouble. That shows WV it isnt over by a long shot. They wouldnt be that worried if they were so sure.Lets let everyone vote and lets do it like Americans. This should be posted cause it says yes we can discuss this at least we still have that left.
Please Bhillary...go away...
I like this guy, possibly one of the most even keeled responses I've read to this whole mess lately.
H.R.Clinton could care less about African-Americans.  She has gotten blatant.  She has gotten truthful - She has, is and will continue to play the race card.  It is the only card she is holding.  It is truely shameful - she glorifies the fact that only the truelyl uneducated will support her.  I, an American of Color, find that offensive and I am not white.  How droll.

Sen.Clinton has dellusions of Black America turning a unified cheek if she is nominated. She will be surprised when we do not. Too nasty, too often, to revealing of her true intent towards peoples of color.
Obama will never get my vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rep. Clyburn, with all due respect sir, the Clintons aint listening to you.  I understand your neutrality point, but I think it's time you made a point there sir. It's time for a change! It might be the Obama slogan, but we Americans are deamanding it now!
Please, superdelgates, put the Clintons out of their misery.

They are clearly acting like the spoilers now, and will not stop until they ruin the party.
Dear Americans of WV and KY,

If you are going to vote for Hillary:
Just shut your senses of skin color and read what Rep Clyburn said and see if you can explain, not to anyone else, but to yourself why majority of you would still vote for Hillary even if she has no chances for the Nomination. See if your conscience can justify.  I know you are all GOD fearing people. Ask yourself if your justification is acceptable to none other than the ultimate Judge who created all mankind to be equal.

Just a humble request. No replies needed, but do channel them through your conscience to the ultimate authority if you have to.

God bless not just America, but the whole world.
Nicely said Rep. Clyburn! This refutes most sensibly the Clinton camps claims of electbility.
Senator Clinton is at a crossroads right now.
Will she continue her quixotic quest for the White House and damn the consequences?
Will she do the right thing, and ,bow out gracefully, and, work to elect Barack Obama?
I hope she does the latter. I fear she'll keep on doing the former.

Question: How would people react if Senator Obama were to say that Hillary Clinton has the Deliverance Vote? Ah now we're getting somewhere!

Dear Wise Sir, This middle-aged white working class woman LOVES you and knows you are sooooo right to say this. Please, haters everywhere, if you love your children and grandchildren, listen up...
Ed Espinoza, the California superdelegate blogging as Mr. Super, goes for Obama

what is that 4 today?
CONGRATULATIONS! for speaking truth.  I think the passion on both sides of the isle has gotten way out of control to the point of disruption and hate.  I hope that this country can see how behavior affects humanity.
Thank you Rep Clyburn, for pointing out that the African American vote is just as important to the party as the white vote is.  Without either one we will not win in the fall.  The Clintons have done good things within the party, to move it forward, and we thank them for that, but now is the time for Sen. Obama to move us into the future
How elegantly said.  It is the young that shall lead.
White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, Midlle Easterners, it doesn't matter, they will be young and they will change this world we live in for the better.
Thank you, Mr. Clyburn.
At the beginning of this race to the white House, I was open to both of these candidates. Then Hillary started to fill her Campaign with dirty Nuances. this is when I turned away from her. The truth of the matter is, none of the people that I communicate with
like Hillary, there's a lot of hate in it for her.
Despite Clinton's recent "electibility email," the superdelegates are quickly shifting to Obama.

So far today, Obama has picked up:
Rep. Donald Payne (NJ) who switched from Clinton to Obama
Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR)
DNC John Gage (MD)
DNC Ed Espinoza (CA)

For the week, Obama has picked up 15 superdelegates (inlcuing 2 who switched from Clinton).

Clyburn is no "undeclared" representative; he's been an Obama de facto surrogate from the beginning of the Democratic primaries.

Black racism cannot trump the Democratic nomination process.  Obama's lead in delegates, superdelegates and votes is due to the black racism in voting against Sen. Clinton.

Obama does not have the requisite number of delegates for the nomination; he has no presumptive lock on the nomination.  The Democratic nomination process is still in progress and concludes when all of the remaining states have voted and the superdelegates select the best qualified candidate using their independent judgment.  Sen. Clinton is the best qualified presidential candidate and she must continue her fight for the future of America.

Qualifications must be the unyielding principle, similar to the rule of law, for the presidential nomination.  There is no "backroom deal" in the unyielding principle of qualifications.

Swiping the nomination from Sen. Clinton with the premature end of the nomination process is a subversion of the Democratic nomination process and this will result in Obama’s crashing and burning in November and the Democratic Party a train wreck in November. I will vote McCain.  McCain will be president and it will be four more years of Bush under McCain.  Black racism must be defeated.
Clyburn is the one who is making this a `Race Issue.
Bra-vo.
__________

Clayburn’s statement is truthful, objective and non-political.

Although I understand how very difficult it is for Clintons to accept the prospect of loosing  the White House I too am concerned about dividing the people in our country.

It also seems psychologically important for Hillary to win West Virginia and Kentucky no matter what the cost. Yes, I worry about Hillary’s state of mind because there is no clear logic supporting her behavior.

But that said, I would like to ask Obama supporters to please be kind(er) to Hillary. Only you, can help him to unite this country by taking the high road.

And, if Hillary’s supporters do not want to join in uniting  the Democratic party and will not vote for Obama, so be it.  Life goes on.
as a black man im offended by the clinton's who we did not want to believe are racists...however in light of recent and previous statements out of their own mouths i am convinced that a big F..K O.F is in order!!!!

now i call on all whites to stand up and speak forwhat u believe...but be HONEST! there's more respect for a known racist than the many of you who are secret "card-holders";yet you act like its all these other things when in fact the only problem you have is that MR. OBAMA IS BLACK. AND IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL ANY BETTER HIS MOTHER WAS WHITE/BUT WAIT!MAYBE SHE WASNT WHITE ENOUGH BECAUSE SHE MARRIED A BLACK MAN!

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

IF YOU WANNA STEP UP I WILL LISTEN: BIGGCUZZN@YAHOO.COM
I would hate to see the United States of America go in the backroom and change the will of the people in out democratic society.
FR: what the hell is going on here today? I've been waiting hours for all of the posts to appear.
I love that Rep. Clyburn cogently asked if Hillary thinks she can win the election with 8% of African Americans. His words should inspire Clinton to reasses her driving ambition to be president and the viability of her dream at this point. I'm 69, white, college educated, I want to see a woman president, but not this round. I fervently support presumptive nominee Barack Obama and I'm eager to cast my vote for him in November.
A great man.
Only certain white voters really matter? Un-American.
He's 100% correct. Does Hillary's current 8% among African Americans mean she'll get that in the general? If so, she is totally unelectable.

She has NO arguments left. Even Rahm Emmanuel today said Obama is the presumptive nominee. Seems like everyone realizes that except Hillary and a few of her blindly devoted supporters.
Hillary's campaign is like the Iraq War, neither is winnable but the people who lead them can't see that truth
I don't know about any body else but I was just brought to tears by Rep. Clyburn and his words and I am a white working class american woman. That's all she wrote for me. I truly think if the Clintons think this is acceptable I am here to say it is not.
God Bless America!
My comments never get posted either.  But I have no hope that the Democratic party will be fair.  They should never have allowed such an incompetent person to run.  They have put their hatred of the Clintons above the good of the United States.  I hope to god that fairminded, thinking persons will abandon the party.  Our years of support mean nothing to them.
I am a white and I get it.  His comments brought tears to my eyes.

The Clintons cost the Democratic Party their House and Senate majorities in 1994.

Now, the Clintons are trying to cost the Democratic Party the presidency in 2008.

Leave it to the Clintons to destroy the party for their personal gain.
