Delegates: Obama picks up two more

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 1:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The Obama campaign announced that California DNC Member Ed Espinoza has endorsed the Illinois senator as well today. So far today, it's a net of Obama 4-0. Obama: Espinoza, NC DNC Member John Gage, Reps. Donald Payne of NJ and Peter DeFazio of Oregon. Clinton: Rep. Chris Carney of PA, but she lost lost Payne.

The NBC delegate counts:
PLEDGED: Obama 1,590, Clinton 1,426
SUPERS: Clinton 273.5, Obama 266
TOTAL: Obama 1,856, Clinton 1,699.5.

* There are 255.5 undeclared superdelegates (about 50 of which are not named yet).

* Since the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on Tuesday, it's a net of Obama 10-1 in superdelegates.

* Obama is 169 away from the magic number of 2,025.

*** UPDATE *** For those asking, Vernon Watkins was already factored into our count.

do not pay attention to BIGCUZZN......I am African American and I am proud of what America is showing me...that there is hope that white, Latinos, Asian,AA,Native American, etc. can come together for a common cause

Besides...I question whether BigCuZZ is truly "Black"  Let's stay focus on the real issue....repairing out great country!!!!!
Will someone on MSNBC please do a story on how ridiculous the “Super-Delegate” process is for choosing our democratic nominee?  Think about it… they are theoretically supposed to be the failsafe in case the voters go crazy and choose some who would be terrible for the party.   But over 200 of them made their endorsements before the primary season even began!  Some of them follow the will of the voters as their states’ primary happen.  Some of them basically sell their endorsements to the highest bidder (promises of future positions, help with their re-election, whatever).   Some of them refuse to make an endorsement no matter what because of their desire to stay “neutral”!!   What the heck is that??  Why are they a super-delegate if they won’t even make a selection??!!   And some of them simply can’t make up their minds, even after 15 months of getting to know the candidates.  This process if beyond screwy.  It’s embarrassing.  Howard Dean – please read this and get rid of this stupid system for next time.  Just let the voters decide.  We’re apparently pretty good at that.
To: DIARY OF A MAD BLACK MAN IN AMERICA

I was very touched by your post.

I am white and I support Senator Obama!
Because he is the best "person" to lead our nation and help heal the divides we have.
What's racist is when white people say they won't vote for a black candidate just because he's black, or when blacks say they won't vote for a white candidate because he's white.  We can now see clearly that many of Hillary "Republican" Clinton's supporters are from the Bigot Brigade.

Go Obama 08/12!
169 delegates away.

If Obama picks up a modest 102 pledged delegates in the final primaries, then he will need only 67 super delegates from the remaining 255.5 super delegates; he will need only 26% of the remaining super delegates to win the nomination. That is, if the rules do not change.
Another super delegate for Obama - from Hamas.
Hi BIGGCUZZN,

I'm not going to email you these comments, I'll tell you and everyone else right here.  Hillary Clinton is a lyin' sack of s*** and will use any political ploy she can to try to steal this election.  The recent remarks to USA Today are abhorrent racist remarks and should be comdemned by all Democrats.  As a 50+ white I am offended and would slap the sh** out of her if I could.  Her remarks are irresponsible, condescending. racist and race-baiting.

The intent is clear, she wants to turn latent racist tendencies against Barack Obama to gain votes in WV and Kentucky.  If I lived in those two states I would be very offended at what she is implying, that dumb whitey can be gamed into voting for her because the other guy is black.  What a crock of crap!

I have written to my two senators to tell them about this and I urge everyone else to do the same.  It's time for Hillary to hit the road, and don't come back, her career is finished.  It's absolutely despicable!
Hi Diary of a mad black man.  Thanks for your post.  I am a white older woman for Obama.  I am horrified, but not surprised by the Clinton's racist attitudes and ashamed of any whites who would not vote for Obama because he is black.  The recent banter has been to the affect that the blacks voting for Obama are racist....what a crock!  It's not racism, it's racial pride.  They have voted for many white candidates over the years and would again, if Barrack was a piece of sh*t like McCain and Clinton.  I know they are going to the issues first and feeling pride in Obama second.  I totally get it.  Yesterday, when the Larsen superdelegate pledged to Obama, I thought...Yes!  There is a fine smart guy of scandinavian decent using his head.  I don't feel that I am a racist, I hope not.  I have much more respect for decent African Americans, Indians and  Asians than for the white trash Hillary Clinton is.
Way to go Obama!!  We will take America forward.  This will be a truly historic time and America will be better and stronger.

Obama '08
Obama is leading in every election Metric now and Clinton is leading in denial.
I think more of the super delegates should be stepping up to the plate. What are they scared of? Let's beat the Republicans. We have real issues and problems and it's time to move on. Yes we can!
As a 54yo WHITE Republican, I am proud to say I support Obama. After watching this country go down the tubes for 7 years one would have to be brain dead to support 4 more years of sheer stupidity.

Go Obama 08 12
Why are supers staying uncommitted? My guess is that if Clinton takes this all the way to the convention, then the only people there who the media will want to talk with are the neutral ones. And what politician doesn't calculate what will get him or her a little extra exposure?

Again, just my guess.
I wish some of the big name superdelegates would have the backbone to finally come out and declare for Obama.  There arguments for staying neutral become less logical every day. Thanks to the SD's who have had the courage to endorse!  Obama!!!
One has to wonder; how many millions of American's will be on Hillary's enemies list after this nominating cycle?
Especially the folks in the MSM that refused to continue saying that Hillary was the presumptive nominee after Iowa the way it had been for the year prior to Iowa.  If only the MSM had not been so biased against Hillary by reporting all of those meangless results from meaningless states then Hillary would have wraped this up long ago!
I read Obama's book (the 2nd one).  I support him because he is clearly an intelligent man, who understands history.  When presented with a situation, he will always make a better decision because he appreciates the consequences of his actions.
Come to Florida, Obama;  we want to see you!

Go Obama!
His true Magic Number for Super Dels is not 169 - he just needs enough of them for the upcoming May 20 Oregon primaries to not only give him the majority of elected delegates, but to also put him at 2025. If her can do that then the confetti drops on May 20 and she is *out* of runway.

How many Supers between now and May 20 does that really take? About 90 more in the next 11 days.

THAT is the real number to watch.

RE: TRUTH !!!

THE TRUTH ABOUT SEN. OBAMA  --IN HIS OWN WORDS AS WRITTEN IN HIS BOOKS!!

AMERICA WAKE UP and DECIDE WHO YOU FEEL IS THE BETTER CHOICE TO LEAD OUR COUNTRY !!

Below are a few lines from Obama's books ' in his own words:

Does is appear he wants to unify our country as he has been saying.

Pay close attention to the last statement from his book.

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'

From 'Dreams of My Father ':  ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela.'

From 'Audacity of Hope' :  'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'
Congratulations Barack!!!  We are so proud of you.  Lets crush the Republicans in November!

Proud Democrat

Obama '08!
McCain will wilt like a prune during the campaign. He's actually struggling to keep up the pace.
MSNBC kindly post this -

The thing is the African American community actually have an African American candidate this time around. It's OK to admit it. I myself am a minority - an Asian. I can understand the enthusiasm of supporting someone your own race to the highest office in the land. It's not like it happens every 4 years that there is a nominee of the same color as you. We're not white people where this thing is a normal occurance.

I think it is hypocrical not to admit that.

It is actually brave to be objective about another candidate and consider them favorably if they are running against someone you would consider your own people, your own color and race. That's just a human thing. The sooner we admit that, the better it would be.

About gender, I have to say it matters too. I admire Hilary for her strength as a woman. You don't see a whole lot of them in her position. And how she dealt with her personal issues. That takes guts and courage.
Women are suppose to be the weaker gender, admit it or not, that is always at the back of our heads. For someone to achieve as much as she did and proven that to be not necessarily the case, that demands respect.
The first woman to run for the Presidency - and came really close to getting it at that is just an icing in her cake.

Appreciate them both for who they are and the history they made - still making.

I would say enough throwing mud from both sides. This occurance doesn't happen every day. Like her or not, you have to be proud that she's an American just like you. Appreciate that you have two terrific individuals to choose from - and don't be afraid to admit the presence of the elephant in the room - Obama is black and black people are voting for him, Hilary is a woman and most women voted for her.

We get either one, it's a win win situation.

Dem's in 08!

My Hispanic Brothers, and Sisters,

Why are you still blindly giving you support to Senator Clinton?

Are you not deeply offended by her remarks, which dismissed you out of hand yesterday, stating how the white vote was the most important?

She is treating you with the same Clinton attitude of ownership, that her, and Bill always held over the African American vote.

They had their share of the Black vote, until Bill offended them in SC. Good for them. They had the good sense to know that they had been trashed, and were rightfully insulted.

I am supporting Senator Barack Obama. You should too!

He does'nt take us for granted. When Gov. Bill Richardson endorsed him, he was so honored, they spent the rest of the day doing historical interviews together. Gov. Richardson's endorsement gave Obama even greater momentum. It was another turning point in his candidacy, which was a great push for him .
We support Barack James Earl Carter Dukakis McGovern Hussein Obama!
Weathermen just pledged to Obama. It is a flood!
If Obama has said Hillary can't win blacks, he would have had to denounce and do a medley of jumping through hoops to placate her.  Superdelegates
need to not be so afraid of the CLintons...

Game over.... Go Obama
To all closet super delegates for Hillary- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come out now before its to late.
Obama is unelectable! Our party is about to grab defeat from the jaws of victory!
Yes Hillary ran a flawed campaign, and yes she underestimated Obama in the begining, but since Feb. the only states he has won were with large African American base. That just won't be enough in November.
I acknowledge that Obama played by the rules and even that it will be unfair to him to take the nomination away but the ends justify the means.
Our country can't have 4 more years of McBush! If you all come out now it won't look so bad in the end.
Hillary will get some momentun then win most of remaining primaries. Seat Fla. and Mich. as a matter of princple which will sanitize what needs to be done a little more.
Your all there to use your judgement and in the end you know in your hearts that she is our only hope.
She is smart, qualified, and would as Lanny Davis says be our best nominee! Obama is a sure loser. Again this is not fair to him but must be done.
Please - all superdelegates come now before its to late. You can save the party!
As a 56 year old college educated, self-employed white man I find Hillary "Republican" Clinton's recent remarks racist and divisive.  Like a spoiled rich brat that doesn't like the way the game is going she now wants to take the ball and go home and cry for the supers to make things work her way.  I don't want the poorly educated white bigots who gave us 8 years of the Bush/Cheney tyranny deciding our country's future for another 4 more years of the same.

Go Obama 08/12!
