Play of the day: Obama plays Taboo

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 2:01 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
SOMEWHERE-IN-THE-SKY-OVER-AMERICA -- Life on the campaign trail is often grueling. The 20-hour days, the ubiquitous turkey sandwiches, the constant travel, the never knowing where you're going to be the next night -- not to mention hearing the same speech over and over and over again. Exhausted reporters complain, exhausted staffers get snappy and sometimes even a 757 can start to feel too small.

So after a particularly punishing stretch of campaigning, with a five-hour flight to Oregon to look forward to, the traveling press settled down for a few rounds of Taboo yesterday. For those that don’t know, it’s a game by Hasbro that is perhaps best described as verbal charades. Players pull a card showing a key word, phrase or famous person's name that they must get their team to guess. The card includes a list of words that can't be used in trying to elicit an answer. Take the word "Aggravate," in this case, the forbidden words would be "Annoy," "Pester," "Antagonize," "Irk," and "Harass". You get a point for every word you get and your team loses a point if you say one of the taboo words. The other team uses a buzzer to indicate when you've done so, and there's a plastic hourglass as a timer.

Reporters have taken to playing the game during long trips and this time the Obama staffers -- including the senator himself -- joined in for two rounds.

The sometimes-heated match led to quite a few funny exchanges, especially since the secret trick to the game is using common points of reference and shared experiences, of which there are many on the trail. Often reporters use lines from stump speeches, recent events and the names of candidates, their spouses or other political figures to get others to say the right answer.

At one point the key phrase was "White House" and the reporter giving the clue said, "Barack wants to live there." The team shouted the correct answer and Obama laughed.

During another turn, the key word was "California" and a reporter said, "This is where Sen. Obama said his "bitter" comments." The other reporters shouted San Francisco, then the Bay Area and a few other words before eventually guessing correctly, at which point Obama joked that he had come to the back of the plane get away from such issues, not to be reminded of them.

Early on, the senator managed to get his team to guess "Cockatoo" by talking about an animal that flies, can mimic human words and has fancy plumage.

Later, when Obama's word was "Revolution," his clue was that this was something Thomas Jefferson called for from time to time. As if sensing a collective "huh?" from his team, he quickly concluded the clue was "too obscure" and instead said the Beatles sang a song about it, which elicited the correct guess.

It was the first time the often media-weary Obama has played a game on the plane with the traveling press and was, therefore, a noteworthy moment, especially since in recent months, Hillary Clinton has taken to chatting with reporters more and more on her plane, both on and off the record, and John McCain is known for his willingness to engage the press.

The game was not without frustration and even a few four-letter words at times of unforced errors, and there was an odd moment at one point when a staffer attempting to get teammates to say the word "gap" gave a clue to the effect that "gay people shop there." The team guessed a series of stores: Obama said, Abercrombie & Fitch; another person said H&M and eventually someone said The Gap.

The competition was feisty, but light-hearted, with lots of buzzing, some trash talking and lots of laughs. In a stunning turn of events, staffers won both rounds, but reporters vowed to have a rematch.

Not reported was the game segment in which the reporters got the word "bearings," and for some inexplicable reason none of them thought to use the word "age."
Thanks for showing for once Obama's human side!
This was actually a refreshing read. I always enjoy reading about these unscripted moments. It doesn't matter which candidate either. It's just nice to know there is a more human side to pols.
We are sensing alot of hate in this forum.

Why are people still not ready for change? What will it take! Wake up Stupid!

the fact that FIRST read is posting this on the Friday before a primary is the surest sign of all that the nomination battle is over!
Just watching a video of what you reporters have to go through while covering the political news is exhausting.  Thank you for all your hard work, keeping us up to date on breaking news, and sharing this delightful story. (No posting please)
To The Wright Choice,

Obviously, you know how to read.  But clearly, you can't comprehend what you read.  And, clearly, you are a very closed-minded person who lacks empathy.  Because, if you pay close attention, you hear the inner turmoil of someone who is struggling to find his own identity. Way too often, people of mixed heritage are not fully accepted by either side of their heritage, and struggle to identify with someone.  Read your history.  Oh, sorry, you wouldn't understand it if you did. But you sure know how to look for those sound bites.  ARe you related to Sean Hannity or something!!???
OBAMA NEED TO GO TO WVA, OBAMA STILL NEED EVERY VOTE HE CAN GET, TO STAY AHEAD AND FAR AHEAD, DO NOT GIVE HILLARY A CHANCE SHE CAN STILL WIN, BECAUSE IF SHE DO NOT DO GOOD IN WVA I BELIEVE SHE WILL DROP OUT.

HILLARY NOT TRUSTABLE, JUST LIKE DISBARRED BILL, THEY MISPOKEN MUCH TO OFFTEN, UNTIL THOSE MISPOKEN WORD BECOME DEVIOUS LIES.

DENOUNCE HILLARY AND BILL AT THE POLL, SEND THEM TO HARLEM.
Hillary is trying to inflame black/white tensions in this country and playing divide/conquer by putting the Hispanics in with the Whites.

She is just as bad as Jeremiah Wright.

It is time for the Democratic Party to disown the Clintons and Jeremiah Wright.

She is just as bad as Jeremiah Wright.

It is time for the Democratic Party to disown the racist Clintons and Jeremiah Wright.
Firstread, as journalists who are using editorial power to filter these comments, I think it is your responsibility to do so in a reasonable way.  Your editorial approval to comments means you have in some way blessed the comments as a worthwhile addition tot he debate being had.  By allowing lies and false implications such as those by "The Wright Choice ??" to be posted under your watch, you impugn your own reputation and insult our political process.
You know Patty SD, CA - you say you will vote for McCain in November after you say that you will vote for Obama in another blog.  Well, remember what state you live in - we here in CA never go red.

Lastly on the HRC money issue - my GOP friend's husband donated $10 to HRC campaign.  Of course, since my sister's dog is the campaign mascot for the OBAMA 08 campaign, I was upset as was she about him dolling out their money to a losing campaign.  Since she is voting for OBAMA, she made her husband recoup that $10 and stood over his shoulder while he got the reimbursement. So that is 1 million minus $10.00.

LOL
What is with all these bitter Hillary supporters?  Are we really that competitive in this country that we cannot put our competitiveness aside for our own good?  If you all honestly think McCain is the best choice in this election because YOUR candidate did not win the nomination, then you deserve what you get for the next 4 to 8 years.  And I don't want to hear anyone complaining.  REALLY!
What a great story of the "Taboo" game. Sadly, those that want to slam Obama will find a way to twist it.

On a serious matter, how can the DNC believe that anything other than a 50-50 split of FL and MI can be fair? Obama's name was not even on the ballot in MI but more to the point in FL Hillary's won simply because she was a known entity and for no other reason. There wasn't time to know anything about this Senator from Chicago, but we had 8 years, lots of dishonesty, an impeachment and mysterious happenings which are still forbidden to discuss regarding the Clintons. Hopefully, assuming the nomination is not stolen from him, Obama will not even consider Hillary as veep. The Clintons should be kept as far away from the White House as possible.
All of you Obama haters must be the uneducated ones the media and statistics talk about.  Shame on you for showing that you are truly her uneducated voters. In case you are unaware they do offer day and night classes for the uneducated.
From 'Audacity of Hope' :  'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

What?  I just read that book, literally just finished it yesterday and I don't remember seeing that sentence anywhere.  And I'm guessing this post is inaccurate in many of its other quotes too.  Stop lying.  Just be glad BO is too decent to not push how close Bill Clinton was to Rev. Wright when he needed to look like a Christian.  What hypocrisy.
Bill-

I agree.  He may lose WV but he's the nominee and he can't be tentative about going to every state in the Union.
I enjoyed the report on Taboo.  Keep throwing in human interest stories.  But I would also like to see a serious report on the likelihood of some of these so-called Clinton supporters actually mattering in the Fall.  They keep claiming they'll vote Re-pub and sink Obama, but I doubt there are that many stupid, vicious racists in her camp to make much difference.  Most people who support Clinton are passionate but reasonable Democrats who will in the end, support their party. Plus, Obama's pulling huge numbers of Independents and decent America-Loving Republicans to sink anybody's nasty swift boats.  So goodbye to the Hatemongers--go vote for McCave and be damned.
Bill S, I completely agree.  I live in the capital city, but his visit would be best received in the coal fields, or in central, rural counties that have lagging economic engines.
MSierra,
Good post. As an Iowan, I was a little disappointed Biden didn't do better here, but still would love to see him as VP or Secretary of State.
Oh and little off subject...also as an Iowan, I feel a little bewildered about the arguement of electability based on popular vote, though that is falling from Clintonian spin because she is behind there too.  Senator Clinton LOST here and several other "unimportant" caucus states, which, correct me if I am wrong anyone but we are not counted in the popular vote numbers.  So, go ahead and argue Senator Clinton is close to Senator Obama in popular vote and should remain and make sure you "disenfranchise" the caucus states in your arguements.
President Thomas Jefferson, founder of my political party I believe, expected better than the messes we've seen this nomination process.  As a party we fellow Democrats attack each other and party members and supporters threaten the party for selfish reasons.  All three of the candidates are US Senators, show a little respect please.  President Jefferson would also be appalled by the current "media" I believe as well.  Life is not dedicated to attempts at destroying each other and misinforming the public.  Get your facts straight and inform the public as per your job description. (This is not directed at this story or FR for that matter, just frustration.)
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." -Thomas Jefferson
To Pete - Albany, NY:

Good work on your part.  Unfortunately, you are one of the few people posting here that actually read.
MSierra, SF -

May I add that Barrack should get a VP who is an expert in Economy and Foreign Affairs - for he sure could use an expert for his lack of knowledge and experience.

Folks, note that the VP is a very important spot. Don't undersestimate it. For whoever it might be could be President in 8 years.
Can not believe you all are making so much of a simple game among friends who are just trying to relax for a little while.  With all the problems of the world and all the things Obama as well as Clinton are trying to accomplish. You should be ashamed!!!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24533370/

Hillary lied to the American public AGAIN.  Her campaign actually raised a little more than $1 million on the day after Pennsylvania, not their $10 million dollar goal.

This shows a pattern that would definitely continue in the White House.  The Clinton's lack the moral fiber to be there.
Democrat
----------------------

Dude, Can you read??

Anyways, people don't like Clinton 'cos she lies unreasonably, and is stubborn. So even when she doesn't, people think she is. Unfair? Maybe... But, i can't judge.
I find it hard to believe that people still looking at color, heck Obama is 1/2 white so why can't he be white... the fact that he must choose a race is racist itself, but if silly folks  want to continue Bush policies go ahead and don't complain about hard times. Mr. Bush is an oil man so now that oil is sky high he loves more money for him when he leaves... the idea that blacks are the driving force to  Obama's success is stupid we only make up about 12% of america so must be some smart people of other races that's supporting him too... remember this the world is watching us so how can we export hope to another country with conviction as they watch how we treat our fellow countrymen...
Obama and his staffers beat the press - the word-masters themselves - at their OWN word game - think about that! There won't be any dummies coming into the White House. Goodness, Hillary can't even remember "Bosnia" and "NAFTA" while McCain can't figure out "Sunni" and "Shiite".
Hey patty,sd,ca - I am a fairly FAT white middle class older woman who has a job and I am signing!!!!

Time for you and the CLINTON'S to pack it in!

Spoon fed useless tripe by a censored and moronic bunch of groupies. No wonder Bush has been able to execute an illegal and unethical, costly vengeful war of aggression to kill thousands of USA soldiers in service of oil companies and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis fighting for freedom.

The fourth estate is showing evidence of its sell out. I hope Obama fed them snacks and soft drinks.
I heard Obama has 20 people on his speech writer staff, but enquiring minds want to know whether he's hired Matthew, Mark, Luke and John yet.  And will Mary Magdalene be in the intern pool?
Wow...for an article that is pretty silly in nature to get the first three responses is just sad.  Do the anti-Obama people just wait in the wings to write pointless drivel?
Dear MSNBC: You have allowed "patty, sd, ca" to voice her very negative and most often nasty comments day in and day out. I think most people are getting really tired of her tirades and would prefer it if you choose comments that are more reasonable.

You really should stop encouraging these people to use First Read as a place to spew their hate. You do have some responsibility you know.

It would be nice if you printed these comments instead of patty, sd, ca. I am from California and she is giving us a bad name.
Now that the end is in sight, Obama shows he can kick back and have fun.  Too many people have taken this contest too seriously for too long. Some are venting on this not-so-news-worthy news item. Too bad.
Obama the candidate that is unqualified and ill-prepared.

Obama the elitist.

Obama the media driven candidate.

Obama the candidate that was given a pass on everything.

Obama the protege of Wright. (they are on the same page).

Obama the "bittergate candidate".

Obama's wife who thinks Americans are mean people.

Obama who threw his Granny under the bus. Where is she by the way????

Obama the friend of Wright (not to believe  what he has said about that).

Obama the man that should not get the nomination(guess the DNC wants another lost).

Obama the guy who can not and must not be elected.

I am a Hillary supporter and would never vote for Obama.  He scares me to death.

Wonderbama should have had the senate CHANGED by now.  He has been a senator for approx. 40 months and has done next to nothing.  Some wonderbama he has turned out to be.

To Bill S.  Yep!!!  Obama should take his nose-up-in the-air arrogant self on down to WV and KY.  I am a mountaineer too and they can spot a phony a mile away and then some.

Obama is phoney, phony, phony and those are his good qualities.

"" I wonder how long before someone from Hillary "Republican" Clinton's gang of terror whines that Obama's use of "Cockatoo" was directed at her.  Come to think of it the description of "an animal that flies, can mimic human words and has fancy plumage" best describes the closet republican.  When I think of Hillary though the only flying animal that describes her perfectly is a flying pig, and only when pigs fly will she get nominated!

Go Obama 08/12! ""

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Eric, That was cheap on your part. It's one thing to support Obama, and I do! - but no need to insult Hillary as such. Exercise some refrain. I know we are all dealing with heated moments and increasingly exacerbating and emotional times when we have to deal with the Clintons, but still we must remember that she is a democrat - albeit probably selfish in most of our minds, but still a democrat - hence one of us.
Like it or not, in January 2009, there will be a swearing-in ceremony for PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.... Two people are interviewing for the most visible job in the United States and only one of them will get it...Baraack Obama will NOT be able to solve many of America's social problems BUt he won't do any more or less than the present administration?....what's more he has the will and political wisdom to attempt to use as many bi-partisan measures as possible?  You DO know that's why the Federal Government can't accomplish ANYTHING, because the corrupt two-party system spend ALL of their time thwarting each other's bills/amendments etc. and catering to the 'special interests' that fund their re-election campaigns?...Go Barack GO..................
You know, First Read ... you need to remind people that these are just BLOGS and NOT FULL NEWS ARTICLES ... so you are allowed to talk about trivial observations from the field in addition to "news tidbits" with some commentary ... people are not getting it ... well ... people in a particular demographic that is apparently a "swing" group ... yes you need to help them out here ...

Keep having fun! ;-)

Free Press my A## they play games get fed listen to his stories and fawn all over him how will they OBJECTIVELY report on him as president probably the same way MSNBZZZZZ helped bush take us to war,as friends of the president not the forth estate.MICA SHUSTER AND TIKI(ZFOX NEWS) BARBER all gushing Obama how ameturish.
But Bill.  The polling in WVA sounds insane.  What's up with your home state?  Thats a hell of a lot of irrational a*# people. I do everything a can not to hate of clinton supporters.

But clintons is a trip.  She was and is "off-the-chain." Bosnia, taxes, changing the rules, treats distroy the part, the race card, the kitchen sink and still talking about working on a back door way to take nomination.

Finally, leading a ring of supporters down this racist path just to find a a voting block then threating to overthrow the democratic process and say screw the tens of millions that voted againt her.

Bill those fools WV got some serious issues.  You don't and every one else that i actually met from the place seem cool, sort off, but my God.  I grew up and Michigan. I can dig the hate in OH and i understand PA was a little rough in tumble. But WVA man... I think you should go to some of western red sates and work with people that are a little less hostile.
ONLY A LOSER WOULD LOSE WEST VIRGINA AND KENTUCKY SUCKER FREE where are all the people of color at his campaign stops all you see is a sea of white standing behind him isnt he proud of his 955 hold on blacks maybe he is using them and the cities will be just as bad under obama as BUSH thenj think of how BILL CLINTON was refered to as the first Black it wasnt made up by white people must have been the 5% that vote for hillary TIS IS RACISM at its best 95%
HEY PETE obamaa always has sometthing bad to say about the USA.THANKS FOR BACKING THIS UP.
Dear Wright Choice,

Please take a chill pill, and that goes for your CAPS-LOCK key too!  It was just a *game*...

And BTW, if you start practicing right now, by January you might be able to say "Pres-i-dent O-ba-ma."
