Clinton: Playing the race card?

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 9:25 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The New York Post: “Clinton played the race card yesterday as she dismissed Barack Obama as a candidate who will have a hard time winning support from ‘white Americans.’ It was the most starkly racial comment Clinton has made in the campaign, and drew quick condemnation from some Democrats.

“ ‘I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,’ she told USA Today in an interview published yesterday. She referred to an Associated Press story on Indiana and North Carolina exit polls ‘that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.’ She added, ‘There's a pattern emerging here.’”

Here’s what some said in response: “Muriel Offerman, a North Carolina superdelegate who has not disclosed her choice, said, ‘That should not have been said. I think it drives a wedge, a racial wedge, and that's not what the Democratic Party's about.’ Asked about Clinton's comments, Massachusetts superdelegate Debra Kozikowsi said, ‘That's distressing. I'm not even sure how to respond to that.’”

The New York Daily News: “Hillary Clinton misplays race card while Barack Obama is treated like rock star.” “[S]ome of her supporters -- including Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Manhattan) -- slammed the comments. ‘I can't believe Sen. Clinton would say anything that dumb,’ Rangel told The News as he headed to the House floor, where earlier he had embraced Obama. The bitter words came as both candidates looked ahead to West Virginia's primary Tuesday and pressed their talking points -- Clinton insisting she was in the race to win, while Obama argued he could have the nomination wrapped up when Oregon and Kentucky vote on May 20.”

Peggy Noonan also believes Clinton played the race card in her USA Today interview. "If John McCain said, ‘I got the white vote, baby!’ his candidacy would be over. And rising in highest indignation against him would be the old Democratic Party. To play the race card as Mrs. Clinton has, to highlight and encourage a sense that we are crudely divided as a nation, to make your argument a brute and cynical ‘the black guy can't win but the white girl can’ is -- well, so vulgar, so cynical, so cold, that once again a Clinton is making us turn off the television in case the children walk by.”

“‘She has unleashed the gates of hell,’ a longtime party leader told me. ‘She's saying, “He's not one of us.”’

John Edwards said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he disagrees with Clinton’s “white Americans” comment and that she's got to ask herself, "Where are the lines?" He added, “I think it’s fine for Hillary to keep making the case for her. But when that shifts to everything that is wrong with him, then we’re doing damage instead of being helpful.”

And did Edwards tip his hand on who he’s backing? He called Obama the "likely nominee.” And we’ll chalk this one up to his Southern accent, but he said he "voted for 'em on Tuesday.” (Sounded an awful lot like "him.")

Also… “I think Barack Obama’s doing pretty well without my help.” Edwards also said, “He is clearly the likely nominee at this point.”

Edwards said he may choose to publicly declare for one of the candidates, but he’s keeping it to himself “just for now.” He added, though, that he doesn’t think his endorsement matters except to “people like you all” [the media]. He wouldn’t answer if he and his wife, Elizabeth, voted for different people.

Here’s the New York Post’s headline to Charles Hurt’s column: “Desperate Hillbillies threaten to break up party.” “Well, now these racial politics have spilled out into the public and are splintering longtime, devoted Democrats into separate camps. It's become the ‘working-class whites’ versus the ‘eggheads and African-Americans.’

More: “With no one left to cry to, Sen. Clinton has gone nuclear and she's getting kookier by the minute. Yesterday she was toast. Today, she's looking more like scrambled eggs.”

Politico's Smith on Clinton's blunt talk about her white support: "Now, the press has talked about the race in these terms constantly, so I won't feign shock. But it's a bit strange to hear it so bluntly from the candidate's mouth, and probably not a great way to endear herself to African-American voters. And it's also noteworthy that the blunt talk on appealing to whites surfaces the day after the last round of primaries in which there's a substantial number of black voters."

The New York Times reports it's possible Clinton will give herself more money. "Clinton advisers said Mrs. Clinton was committed to spending more of her own cash on the campaign if necessary, although they spoke optimistically about a rise in fund-raising if she prevails in Tuesday’s primary in West Virginia." More: "Clinton had been increasingly relying on Internet donations this spring from new and small-amount contributors; the day after she won the April 22 Pennsylvania primary, the campaign brought in a record $10 million online. But Hassan Nemazee, one of Mrs. Clinton’s national finance chairmen, put the amount she collected online in the 24 hours after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries at only “$1 million-plus.”

Interestingly, the Times makes the point that Obama's big spending in PA for his nine-point loss actually may have dealt a devastating financial blow to Clinton. "Obama spent $9 million on television advertisements in North Carolina and Indiana, including a last minute $170,000 purchase in the expensive Chicago market, which extends into northern Indiana. By contrast, Mrs. Clinton spent about $4.7 million in those states, according to CMAG. Even more, said Evan Tracey, spokesman for CMAG, the fact that Mr. Obama was able to pump $10 million into media purchases in Pennsylvania in April, even though he did not win that state, forced Mrs. Clinton to spend $5 million, cash she could have used in Indiana and North Carolina.”

Yesterday, Terry McAuliffe said "seven figures." That doesn't quite confirm the million dollar Internet haul but...

During a three-state whirlwind tour yesterday of half of the remaining primaries, Clinton has altered her stump speeches on energy slightly to address the specific needs of those states, NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum notes. While Clinton emphasized coal technology in West Virginia (a topic normally included in a list but rarely specified on), she discussed wind power at more length in South Dakota. "When we get 52% of electricity from coal in the United States, coal is not going anywhere," Clinton said to applause in Charleston, WV. The New York Senator did emphasize the necessity for clean coal technology but assured the audience, which was sure to have included a good percentage of coal miners, that coal mining would not be eliminated.

None of the coal talk was anywhere to be seen in an expanded rally in Sioux Falls, SD four hours later. Instead, the focus was on wind energy production. "It's been said that America from the Dakotas down to West Texas is the Saudi Arabia of wind," Clinton said. "And, you know, that's not just Washington political hot air talking; that's actually a fact, that if we harness the wind coming off of these plains and we had an electric grid system with the distribution system to transmit it from right here in South Dakota across our country, we would be moving toward clean renewable energy."

Why go on? The New York Daily News: “Whatever happens, it's a profile in true grit. But why is she still in a race that with each passing hour appears more doomed? Admirers say she's genuinely driven to make America a better place. Critics attribute her doggedness to the consuming ambition, thirst for power and streak of narcissism she shares with her husband.”

“Movie mogul and Hillary Rodham Clinton backer Harvey Weinstein told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi he would stop fund-raising for Democrats if she refused to support new primary elections in Florida and Michigan, it was reported yesterday.”

FOR A GIRL WHO CLAIMED A FEW WEEKS BACK TO BE RAISED WITH GUNS SURE DIDN'T KNOW WHICH END TO POINT THE BARREL. OF ALL HER COMMENTS THIS "{WHITE AMERICA}" WILL BE AS WISTON IS OFTEN MISQUOTED "THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE ....." CHEER UP HILLARY YOU MIGHT BE FREED TO ENJOY MOTHER'S DAY. '
Sen Clinton reminds me of the last desperate days of Richard Nixon.
Why is it every time Hillary speaks the truth the Obama team and the bias news media cry race card when the only people that have played the race card in this campaign is the Obama team Obama used it to get the block vote of the blacks in this country and he used his silver tongue to get the young votes in this country.......I am 70 years old and a life long democrat but i will vote republican this fall if Hillary is not the nominee and so will all my family.
Why does the Democrat party think that blacks are the only people in there party .....they had better get smart they have more than likely lost an easy election in November and I say good for them I am pulling out of the party and will get as much of my family to do so as I can and that won't be hard after this race is over and Hillard does not win!!!!!!!!!!
the fat lady is warming up !!!
ms. pelosi need to tell harvey where to go and the shortest route to get there. there are others that will help fund the democratic party besides him. Besides , when did he decide that he has enough power that he can threaten or blackmail the speaker of the house as well as the american people. To hell with this guy.
I have always been a strong supporter of the Clinton clan. I am an African American and more hurt than mad by these comments.
This is a woman who wants to ignore democratic
process and popular vote and be selected despite
the will of the people.  Hello??
Up to 21st century race still divides us on decisive events. How can we really unite to stand?
the fat lady is taking the stage and warming up her vocal chords , I think I hear: " the party is over , turn out the lights ".
And people try to say it is not a race promble in america. When is pastor says something about race the media is all over it. Here is some one running for the highest office in the land. Some one we trust to look out for us and she say. That Obama can't win the white voters. She should just go and be with Mcain that's who she is trying to help win. If she can't have it. Then she dam sure don't want obama to have it now if that is not being races then what is.
Clinton shows her true colors, and they are "WHITE", shocking!!!!
Not that I would ever approve of her as President but, would the stories get the same twist if Obama said he thought he had the black vote?  We all know he does (for the most part).
All Americans please read these committments you have to have being a member of Barack Obama's 20 year+ church. "www.tucc.org/about.htm". Pay attention to #4 and the bottom line. They read "a non-negotiable committment to Africa". ??? This is America not Africa. Also the bottom line reads "the black value system". We need a President with there commitment to the American people. With an all color value system. Please dont be fooled, read it for yourselves, at their website. GOD SAVE AMERICA and ALL HER PEOPLE!!!
I used to support and respect Hillary. I used to think she had the right to continue to the end in her primary run. She has turned into McSame with her old style politics and she is willing to be the spoiler. I support Obama now. It seems he is the only one that is trying the hardest to win fair & sqare, save the Democratic party and not play slash and burn politics. He is more presidential than any of the other two. At least he hasnt sold his sole like Hillary and McSame has.

Hillary, give it up before you go down in history as the great spoiler. You have burned your bridges now you are throwing gasoline on any hope of a VP spot. It would have been nice to see both of you in the White House, but now I think Obama even concidering you as VP would be a huge mistake. I still like Bill but he killed Gores chance and in all truth bears sole responsibility for Bush being in office and this country being in the shape it is in. I would not like to see Obama's chances to leave a historic legacy end in a Bill clinton screwup like gore suffered.

It is truley a shame you had to throw away the chance to be the first woman vice president in history. It is a bigger shame that you just did not have the long term vision to do what is right for this country, our party or the Americas people. Every one of the continders that dropped out did so with honor and grace knowing that by doing so they could have a second chance. Your throwing that away now by trying to blackmail Obama into paying you to stop destroying the party and our chances at the presidency. Shame on you!

I have no doubt Obama will be a great president. He does have the vision to know exactly how his legacy will effect black, minority and even female Americans for generations to come.
Hillary Clinton is a narcissistic, classless, prude. This has to be the stupidist thing that she could have done to herself, especially as vulnerable as her campaign is right now. She is finally being exposed for who she truly is.
Simply amazing, especially should someone, anyone, acknowledge the fact that the population of NC is approximately 80% white and IN is approximately 90% white. Negative comments on Clinton's remark relating to the 'broad base' should be questioned as to their lack of respect for the constituent's intelligence regardless as to their educational level. Why should one get away with stating that they best represent the country when they have not received an overwhelming majority of the broad base vote. Sounds like Clinton does not want to have to reject becoming VP.
I certainly hope we are not going to condemn Hilary Clinton for her comment.  I think what she said is an obvious fact.  Not necessarily meant as a racist comment.
Hillary did use race because she is scared of
Obama and her goal of becoming president.
WE ALL KNOW IF OBAMA HAD SAID THAT IN REGARD TO THE BLACK VOTE, HE WOULD BE HISTORY. IT SEEMS LIKE HILLARY IS SAYING THE UNEDUCATED PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY ONES DUMB ENOUGH TO VOTE FOR HER. NEWSFLASH, I AM A 60 YEAR OLD HARD WORKING ITALIAN/INDIAN REPUBLICAN WOMAN AND I AM NOT DUMB I LOVE OBAMA. HE HAS MY VOTE, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO VOTED FOR THE WAR AND COST THE USA 4,000 OF OUR LOVED ONES OR WHO IS SO SELFISH AND UNTRUTHFUL AND VICIOUS. I CAN'T SEE WHY PEOPLE ARE STILL LETTING HER HANG IN HERE, SHE IS RUINING OUR COUNTRY THAT I LOVE AS WELL AS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
When you are a loser.... you speak as a loser
Selfish, arrogant, negative, divisive Clintons! As a Democrat, now I understand why the Republicans hated them so much. Unfortunately, I have to agree with them now. Someone said years ago that the Democrats lost the South for generation. If they let the Clintons keep going with this mess, the party will African American voters for a generation. Man up Howard Dean and take control of this situation!
Obama cannot win, not because of race but, because of his lack of expierence. The country is in a terrible mess and we don't need on the job training right now. We need expierence. I like obama and I think he will make a great president but, its not his time. Mccain will beat him in the presidential race and we don't need a mccain in the white house.
Harvey Weinstein's threat is typical of old politics in this country. If you don't do or say what I want, I will not support you. Weinstein is trying to buy Hillary's way into the White House. They want yo change the rules since things did not go as they planned.
of course she did!

do you hear Barack saying "her support from African Americans is virtually non-existent!"? NO.

And what Clinton has apparently overlooked is that she WOULD NEED AA support in November, and Barack's been doing MUCH better with the white vote than Hillary is doing with the AA vote...

really, she's grasping at straws now...
why does it surprise anyone that race is part of this issue... it is gonna get ugly... the only good part is that "W" is not running again.. if so, race would already beat the whole thing down
What Hillary said is pretty much plain and simple fact - but the media will wring it out to no end trying to make as many headlines as possible - I am a joe blow white american and would not vote for Obama under any circumstances now or ever.
fairly pathetic to suggest Hilary is a racist now! This is pure boredom!
it was so sad to hear hillary play the race car yesterday.she sound desperate she sounds like she can win with out blacks ,since it was blacks that give her husband two terms.
I do find the double- and even triple-standards regarding the unspoken rules for talking about race discouraging. When Obama discusses his small gains into white voter demographics is he being racist? Should he become the nominee, or even the president, will the need to follow these unspoken rules continue? Will votes on legislative issues that might have racial implications be viewed along racial lines? Will a President Obama unwittingly unleash a Pandora's Box of unspokens? Can anything get done in that type of environment?
It was widely reported that Obama got 98% of the black vote in NC.  So what in the world is wrong with Hillary talking about the white vote???
With her latest racist comment, Hillary has clearly displayed in public what she intimately believes in. In desperation, she is now calling on whites to be racists. It's insulting to both Whites and Blacks, and to the principles we stand for. We want to move forward, she wants to move backward. Instead of lifting the country up, she wants to sink the country for her own selfish interests. What kind of leader will do such an awful thing? Clearly, her behavior does not show leadership.
I am black and am not offended by Senator Clinton's remarks, she told the truth.  If BLACK or AFRICAN AMERICAN can't be used around Senator Obama then the Presidency is not for him.  He has to have a tough skin and so does the media.  There will be worst things said and worst things done to him by all of you who tend to make the statements of Senator Clinton an issue.  As a voter, I am sick and tired of all this mess... people like you all are splitting the party.  When you really think about, you make Rev. Wright's point.  Right now I am a citizen who is terrified.  If Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are truly interested in the people of this country and not just interested in the GLORY of holding the position as President of the United States, then hell, quit putting a wedge between them by all of YOU ALL's negative comments.  Let some of us DUMB and STUPID citizens (the way you make one feel) speak.
This is another morning of pundants gone wild again.  Peggy Noonan, David Schuster, and Mika on the MSNBC Morning Joe Show crossed the line with Clinton bashing.  Senator Clinton made no racial remarks.  She stated poll facts that these pundants have been reporting for weeks.  In addition ,I would say when Senator Obama says he has the support of the African American vote (and he has) he is being racist. Mika must have had cotton in her ears, because Jon Edwards said he agreed with her statement. Lets take a look at the MSNBC Morning Joe Show and Political Coverage team. OH MY GOSH it is predomiantly "WHITE."  Oh, they do bring in African Americans to comment. Mighty "white" of them!  Joe you should never let Mika alone with your show.  MSNBC has been so pro-Obama at the beginning of the campaign, that I almost quit viewing.  But then Joe started making nice with Senator Clinton or at least fairly.  Thanks Joe!  I have been disgusted with Mika , but today she was more disgusting. I would rather watch BILL-O than Meeka!  I am caucasion, 59 years old, college educated, disabled American Veteran and female.  I have been a democrat all my life and support Senator Clinton with great pride and I would walk through the Gates of Hell for her. I will not vote for Mr. Obama, unless Senator Clinton is on the ticket.  If Bill and Hillary would change to a third party ticket, they would win hands down.  I will not support John MaCain, but if not Hillary than Ralph Nadar.  Sorry Morning Joe Show Mika crossed the line this time, you have lost this viewer.
I refuse to believe that Hillary didn't know she was making a statement that could divide the Democratic Party. She couldn't have been more transparent if she had walked up to John McCain, shook hands, and told him good luck in November in front of a national TV audience.
I guess Hillary thought she couldn't win the Democratic nomination with out making that distinction. I hate negative politics, and this is why. I was willing to blame the Republicans for the way they would always characterize Democrats.
Well, I am a hard working, white American, middle class member that will vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming general election, even if Hillary should get the nomination for the Democrats. My disgust, with the process, is so adament that for the first in my 60 years I will write in a candidates name. If I must!
Thanks Hillary, for renewing my anger.
SHE HAS BEEN PLAYING THE RACE CARD FOR A WHILE. SHE WILL SAY AND DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED. WE KNOW HAVE A DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE PLAYING THE RACE CARD AS WELL AS MIMICKING CONVERSATIVE REPUBLICANS.
It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out in the media, particularly in light of the media storm that was generated by Sen Obama's "bitter" comment.  Sadly, I just don't think this will become as big of an issue for her as "bittergate" was for him.
i can not believe that it is a race card when Hillary speaks of the support of white americans, but not when Barack gathers support from african -americans.
Yes, of course she played the race card.  Most politicians will go to great lenths to win an election.  When they are behind they play the race card, the sympathy card, scare tactics and other little games in an effort to win - newsflash: many of them will even tell lies (gasp)
It is not a surprise that this was said given all of what has gone on.  This is as bad a bringing Wright up again or saying "shame on you" comments.
Hillary is really getting desperate and she is too smart to say such a thing.  I am a supporter of Obama, but if he loses the nominee for President, I would not have a problem voting for Hillary.  It's time for Democrats to control the White House.
I thought Hillary was smarter than this. Sure, she'll say that it was just an innocent mispoken word, but she and Billy have a way of doing this all the time. ex prez Bill played the race card when he said he had an office in Harlem, and Hillary barely escaped sniper bullets with Chelsea.

This is the kind of junk that's really beginning to make the Dems look totally stupid.
Going back abit when both candidates were declaring their faith. Mrs. Clinton stating what a devoted Christian she is. Well, do you just accept "words" or should her life be backing up her claims."Lying" seems to be taken very casually by her. Example was her tale about Bosnia.Does the United States want a president that lies so easily?
This makes me furious!   What do you call Obama getting 91% of the black vote?  Is that not the RACE CARD?   How about Obama predicting that he will get the black vote, and catering to the black vote?  Is that not the race card?  And that's OK????  I AM FURIOUS OF THE DOUBLE STANDARD IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THIS IS THE TYPE OF POLITICS AND WORLD THAT OBAMA WILL BRING US.   HE CAN TALK ABOUT RACE, BUT NO ONE ELSE IS ALLOWED TO.   OBAMA WILL DIVIDE OUR COUNTRY.
The lady is driven and desperate.  It is a competitive race and sometimes you have to pull out all the stops.  But at some point you have to stop and ask yourself if it's worth going down the drain..........
Hillary just states the facts, and is slammed as a racist. The Honorable Rev. Wright spews lies and outright racial hatred, while Obama looks on.....for 20 years, and Obama is the "Uniter". You tell me which way is up, it's too hard to determine any more, with the insanity that has become the new America.
I don't think John Mc Cain will have any problem determining the racist with thousands of Rev Wright video/soundbites flooding the airways in the weeks before the election.
I think that it is truly apalling the way Senator Clinton has used the race card here.
Does this country need a divider or someone who can inspire UNITE!!! A Presidential candidate should never utter words that divide the people of this country--- A Presidential candidate should never utter words that serve to seperate each and everyone of us from each other--- How can superdelegates support such an individual, an individual that is taking us back to the slavery era!!!

Regradless of what the media and stats predict a Presidential candidate should never utter words such as"I've got the whites, the working-whites"-- she should be held to a higher standard!!!!!!!
The latest race leakage from Hillery's mouth betrays her intense desperation to become President, with
such unstately delution clearly saying "if I can't win,let my Party and everybody go to hail". This is strange and unexpected.
What does it take to get the "pious one", Clinton, to shut up, go home, and do the job that she SO wanted and rooked the citizens in NY to give to her so handily.  Enough Mrs. Bill....
To those that are writing in this article that say that what she has stated is the truth--- yes indeed the stats should that to be the case to some degree, but she SHOULD BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD and she should not be using the stats to make her case.

Furthermore, her statement is not accurate! His numbers with the white voter have been building while hers with the black voters have NOT! Do you hear Obama making a case against her given the fact that she isn't attracting the most loyal of democrats in this country, the black community, of course NOT! --- HE'S HOLDING TO A HIGHER STANDARD!!!
