Clinton: Playing the race card?

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 9:25 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The New York Post: “Clinton played the race card yesterday as she dismissed Barack Obama as a candidate who will have a hard time winning support from ‘white Americans.’ It was the most starkly racial comment Clinton has made in the campaign, and drew quick condemnation from some Democrats.

“ ‘I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,’ she told USA Today in an interview published yesterday. She referred to an Associated Press story on Indiana and North Carolina exit polls ‘that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.’ She added, ‘There's a pattern emerging here.’”

Here’s what some said in response: “Muriel Offerman, a North Carolina superdelegate who has not disclosed her choice, said, ‘That should not have been said. I think it drives a wedge, a racial wedge, and that's not what the Democratic Party's about.’ Asked about Clinton's comments, Massachusetts superdelegate Debra Kozikowsi said, ‘That's distressing. I'm not even sure how to respond to that.’”

The New York Daily News: “Hillary Clinton misplays race card while Barack Obama is treated like rock star.” “[S]ome of her supporters -- including Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Manhattan) -- slammed the comments. ‘I can't believe Sen. Clinton would say anything that dumb,’ Rangel told The News as he headed to the House floor, where earlier he had embraced Obama. The bitter words came as both candidates looked ahead to West Virginia's primary Tuesday and pressed their talking points -- Clinton insisting she was in the race to win, while Obama argued he could have the nomination wrapped up when Oregon and Kentucky vote on May 20.”

Peggy Noonan also believes Clinton played the race card in her USA Today interview. "If John McCain said, ‘I got the white vote, baby!’ his candidacy would be over. And rising in highest indignation against him would be the old Democratic Party. To play the race card as Mrs. Clinton has, to highlight and encourage a sense that we are crudely divided as a nation, to make your argument a brute and cynical ‘the black guy can't win but the white girl can’ is -- well, so vulgar, so cynical, so cold, that once again a Clinton is making us turn off the television in case the children walk by.”

“‘She has unleashed the gates of hell,’ a longtime party leader told me. ‘She's saying, “He's not one of us.”’

John Edwards said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he disagrees with Clinton’s “white Americans” comment and that she's got to ask herself, "Where are the lines?" He added, “I think it’s fine for Hillary to keep making the case for her. But when that shifts to everything that is wrong with him, then we’re doing damage instead of being helpful.”

And did Edwards tip his hand on who he’s backing? He called Obama the "likely nominee.” And we’ll chalk this one up to his Southern accent, but he said he "voted for 'em on Tuesday.” (Sounded an awful lot like "him.")

Also… “I think Barack Obama’s doing pretty well without my help.” Edwards also said, “He is clearly the likely nominee at this point.”

Edwards said he may choose to publicly declare for one of the candidates, but he’s keeping it to himself “just for now.” He added, though, that he doesn’t think his endorsement matters except to “people like you all” [the media]. He wouldn’t answer if he and his wife, Elizabeth, voted for different people.

Here’s the New York Post’s headline to Charles Hurt’s column: “Desperate Hillbillies threaten to break up party.” “Well, now these racial politics have spilled out into the public and are splintering longtime, devoted Democrats into separate camps. It's become the ‘working-class whites’ versus the ‘eggheads and African-Americans.’

More: “With no one left to cry to, Sen. Clinton has gone nuclear and she's getting kookier by the minute. Yesterday she was toast. Today, she's looking more like scrambled eggs.”

Politico's Smith on Clinton's blunt talk about her white support: "Now, the press has talked about the race in these terms constantly, so I won't feign shock. But it's a bit strange to hear it so bluntly from the candidate's mouth, and probably not a great way to endear herself to African-American voters. And it's also noteworthy that the blunt talk on appealing to whites surfaces the day after the last round of primaries in which there's a substantial number of black voters."

The New York Times reports it's possible Clinton will give herself more money. "Clinton advisers said Mrs. Clinton was committed to spending more of her own cash on the campaign if necessary, although they spoke optimistically about a rise in fund-raising if she prevails in Tuesday’s primary in West Virginia." More: "Clinton had been increasingly relying on Internet donations this spring from new and small-amount contributors; the day after she won the April 22 Pennsylvania primary, the campaign brought in a record $10 million online. But Hassan Nemazee, one of Mrs. Clinton’s national finance chairmen, put the amount she collected online in the 24 hours after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries at only “$1 million-plus.”

Interestingly, the Times makes the point that Obama's big spending in PA for his nine-point loss actually may have dealt a devastating financial blow to Clinton. "Obama spent $9 million on television advertisements in North Carolina and Indiana, including a last minute $170,000 purchase in the expensive Chicago market, which extends into northern Indiana. By contrast, Mrs. Clinton spent about $4.7 million in those states, according to CMAG. Even more, said Evan Tracey, spokesman for CMAG, the fact that Mr. Obama was able to pump $10 million into media purchases in Pennsylvania in April, even though he did not win that state, forced Mrs. Clinton to spend $5 million, cash she could have used in Indiana and North Carolina.”

Yesterday, Terry McAuliffe said "seven figures." That doesn't quite confirm the million dollar Internet haul but...

During a three-state whirlwind tour yesterday of half of the remaining primaries, Clinton has altered her stump speeches on energy slightly to address the specific needs of those states, NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum notes. While Clinton emphasized coal technology in West Virginia (a topic normally included in a list but rarely specified on), she discussed wind power at more length in South Dakota. "When we get 52% of electricity from coal in the United States, coal is not going anywhere," Clinton said to applause in Charleston, WV. The New York Senator did emphasize the necessity for clean coal technology but assured the audience, which was sure to have included a good percentage of coal miners, that coal mining would not be eliminated.

None of the coal talk was anywhere to be seen in an expanded rally in Sioux Falls, SD four hours later. Instead, the focus was on wind energy production. "It's been said that America from the Dakotas down to West Texas is the Saudi Arabia of wind," Clinton said. "And, you know, that's not just Washington political hot air talking; that's actually a fact, that if we harness the wind coming off of these plains and we had an electric grid system with the distribution system to transmit it from right here in South Dakota across our country, we would be moving toward clean renewable energy."

Why go on? The New York Daily News: “Whatever happens, it's a profile in true grit. But why is she still in a race that with each passing hour appears more doomed? Admirers say she's genuinely driven to make America a better place. Critics attribute her doggedness to the consuming ambition, thirst for power and streak of narcissism she shares with her husband.”

“Movie mogul and Hillary Rodham Clinton backer Harvey Weinstein told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi he would stop fund-raising for Democrats if she refused to support new primary elections in Florida and Michigan, it was reported yesterday.”

Let's see if this gets 8 cycles of news spin. This did not come out of one of her surrogate's mouths; or her pastor's mouth - this came directly from the HORSE's mouth and it's sad. C'mon MSM I want to hear about this everytime I turn on my TV. I even want Dan Abrams to run a special over and over again this weekend (right before the election next week); I want Race for the White House to analyze, splice and dice this TODAY; I want HardBall to talk abouto it over and over. Keith O will speak truthfully about it so he's excluded from the rest of you. THANKS CHUCK TODD for at least printing the truth.
acts by a desperate women...talk down to the people that "support" her and offend everyone else. Sounds like a case of if I can't have it than you can have it.
Hillary is right.  Clinton vs. McCain is a Clinton win.  Obama vs. McCain is a McCain win.  Everyone knows that, except Obama and his supporters.

BTW, where did this guy come from?  He's scary, almost like the character in the Left Behind Series.  I mean, he has a militant wife who makes no secret of her dislike of whites; a militant pastor who also makes no secret of his dislike of whites, and while he may have a white mother/grandmother, it does not mean he is white and it seems to me both his wife and pastor are telling us what Obama really thinks and believes.  Really scary; and really upsetting to realize how many unitelligent, unsophisticated and uncaring voters there are.
Wow!!! I keep saying that she will say anything to get elected - But now we can add....... She will say many things to get "un-elected" as well. This women is dangerous and its time she crawl back under that Arkansas Rock.
HILLARY REMINDS ME OF A SOUTHERNER I HAVEN`T
SEEN IN NEARLY FIFTY YEARS."YOU`VE GOT TO BE TAUGHT"
FROM "SOUTH PACIFIC." SOMETIMES,BEING UNTAUGHT,
IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR MANY OF US.
  CARL COSIMO RIZZO I

Hillary Clinton will say and do anything to be elected president.  For some reason, she and Bill seem
to think it her right to be president and they will say or do anything to that end.  I can't believe how taken in people are by the two of them.
OMG...I guess all of this is the nuclear option Clinton's campaign was suppgesting.  Harvey Weinstein is odviously bought and paid for and as a democrate I believe his money is dirty and Pelosi should tell him to shove it!!

I hear several people talking about how the Democratic party allowing Clinton to get away with such horrible racially baiting remarks shows how lame they are as a whole and has Democrates looking to leave the party and vote for Nadder!! People are suggesting this campaign has proven the flaws with the 2 party system.

Supporters like Ed Rendell who count on the black and white vote for nomination needs to quickly separate himself from the Clintons and their race baiting!

Unless Superdeligates shut this thing down quickly the Clintons will continue to distroy race relations within the party.  The Democratic party has always been the party of inclusion...those superdeligates continueing their Clinton support suggests they agree with race baiting within their own party!

The Superdelegates need to come out NOW! They can end this stupidness by HRC.  I'm  really tired of listening to her make bigger fool of herself.  Let's get behind Obama and beat McCain!
she has a "broad base" alright; but it has nothing to do  with educated voters
Its a shame on how these politicians are so afraid to just talk facts. Why is it when a Caucasian American, which society is using the term "White American" uses data to show voter turn out, its called Racial?
If anyone plays the race card its Obama, he openly uses his race to try to sway voters. I watch him openly play that position in an interview. Those that take statements which come from data and think these remarks are racial, hold racism within their heart,; the comments themselves are not! our politicians should be ashamed of themselves, because they are in fact using their vote & his race to forward their political positions, not because they believe in him. He has offered nothing and cannot lead or unite anything, he has offered nothing but a staement that he wants to see change; we all do; but how? That is what he has not offered to America. Hillary is behind because of Florida & Michagan delegates are not being allowed to be used; how unfair is that? This historical election is going to go down in the history books as a failure once again. We look stupid abroad because two of our largest States cannot be heard. These Govenors need to be removed from office and the States forced to hold new Primaries. Its our Constitutional right to vote & the Democratic party should not be able to say we cannot. I cannot believe that people do not think this is a republican conspiracy to allow their candidate to be better positioned to run against the weaker candidate " Obama". It was also on the radio that Indiana republicans were asked to vote for Obama & then flip during the Novemebr election, fact or fiction? I guess we will only know the truth when Primary is held, now wont we? Those voters can simply say they changed their mind. Obama will never hold their votes nor will he pick up Hillary's supporters in a race  against McCain and the Republican party knows this. We are all in trouble here, it will end up being another 4 years of Republican rule.
Shame on Hillary1 Once again she played the race card and this quite brazenly.  She shows her true character, a person of very low principles in line with George W. Bush.

She needs to stop her campaign lest she do further damage to the Democratic Party and destroy it in the fall election.

She is truly pathetic wanting to win the presidency at any cost.  These remarks make her unfit to be the leader of our country and the leader of the free world.
If something remotely so stupid came out of Barack Obama's mouth - it would be like the "world is coming to an end" or something. The Clinton armor has cracked and their true colors are showing and it ain't pretty people. NO VP FOR HER EITHER PLEASE.
HER COMMENTS ARE DIVISIVE!!!!!!!!! AND SHE AS A PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL SHOULD BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD!! higher than what the press or the media folks are held to!
Wind power? Harness the hot air blowing out of Hillary and run the world. Hillary is the best thing in the world for the oil companies. Her comment about Bombing Iran drove the price of oil up . And then she spouts off about breaking the OPEC cartel and oil jumps again. I think she must be a closet republican who work for BUSH to drive up the cost of oil. She refuses to vote for drilling in America.
Oh boy...this is disturbing. I was pro Edwards and he got no media. I became pro Hillary and she was sometimes inspirational and others embarrassing, but she is an experienced intelligent (I thought!), tough and deserving member of my sex. So I stuck even when it was a little weird. But this one is too much. True or not, it's not a good way to argue for your place at the head of the party. Appealing to the worst in us is a shameful way to fight for your last hope. She should quit while she still has an ounce of dignity left. I am sad for her and all of us who backed her. She is digging her own and her husband's historical grave now. I am not crazy about Obama and less about his wife...but he is winning and fairly, and Hillary needs to accept that - get over her disappointment, and start working to get him in the White House as a good Democrat and more importantly a good American.
Obama is a lightweight. Not a black lightweight or a white one, but he just would be a disaster as president.
obama has already divide the Democratic Party and for mikia to talk about hillary clinton like she does is something else I remember watching mikia talk with michelle obama and michelle obama say black america will wake up and get it why is that any driffrent then what clinton said at least clinton was just qouting a Associated Press story on Indiana and North Carolina exit polls but mikia just like always is blowing it all out of wack but it's ok on the rev wright story for obama and michelle obama saying black america will wake up and get it
No outrage on the comments? Yes, but only "some". Where is the media? Reasons why she's almost untouchable: 1) She is a Clinton; 2)She is a Democrat; 3) a Woman. Nobody can play the race card except the Dems.
I know who I want to vote for, but it's getting so confusing, I don't know anymore. I would like to see Hillary win, but I think it will be a close race. It looks like M Cain will be the most nominee that will win, because Obama and Hillary are always fighting each and trying to out do the other.
every obama supporter wants to yell racism toward hillary supporters when they are voting 90% + for obama. how much more racist can you get than that over whelming number. and to call us racist is a joke. the national race will be just that a race election specifically for that reason plus the added j. wright ideology that obama listened to for twenty years. and WE GET CALL RACIST. you made the race what it is getting turned into. you only have yourselves to blame.
Okay... I think people (including Mrs. Clinton) are wrong to suggest that Obama will not be able to reach middle class, uneducated, white people.  Right now the party is divded and this are very heated, but come election time I think things will have cooled down.

Also... does it matter so much what demographic is voting for him?  He still has a larger number of voters in every category, so do we have to have another president who is seen as one for white, uneducated, middle class people?  Do the other folks in this country not matter?  I dunno.  I just think it's interesting how a spin has been put on what types of people vote and who really matters?  I think there will be alot of angry people who don't fit into that category if we just assume that only "they" count.  Don't all of us count?  Don't the numbers speak for themselves?
Not politically correct, but 100% true....
hmmm perhaps we can have her booked for the next episode of Intervention or Dr. Phil?
This is a deal that was struck when Bill got caught cheating. It doesn't matter how much money she pours into the campaign. He owes her! Her ego will not let her quit but pulling the race card is the last stand of a desparate women.Too Bad! Very Sad!
The Democratic party should tell Weinstien to keep his money,  Good riddance to him, celebrities do little to boost political candidates.  Hillary needs to go as well, the Michigan and Florida primaries do little in helping her get the needed number of delegates. I think she is out to ruin the party.
Sad, sad, sad.  How does Hil think that throwing blacks under the bus after the last black-centric primary is going to help her already hopeless general election cause in Nov?!  Blacks are already poised to walk away from her in lockstep if the nomination that Barack has EARNED is taken away from him.  This is somehow supposed to help her win back the community she can't afford to pi$$ off?

See you back in the Senate, Hillary.
Everyone should look in the mirror and ask themselves "Does Obama really have a chance if he's nominated as president?"  The answer in no.  I have followed most of the preliminaries, and Obama has taken the majority of the black vote, while Hillary has taken the majority of the white vote every time.  Do you think this will be different if it comes down to Obama vs. McCain?  They recently did a poll in Massachusetts, a strong Democratic state.  If Obama runs against McCain, it's dead even.  If Hillary runs against McCain, Hillary wins by 15 points.  What does that tell everyone?  Hillary didn't even open up her mouth, before this poll was taken.  So, I guess the state of Massachusetts is racist?
Hillary is pathetic! Now she wants to play the race card because she hasn't gotten the black votes that she depended on.Poor Hill-Bill, she thought that this nomination was in the bag and now she's desperate and in dire straits with money. She should win anything but a ride back to her house in NY/Arkansas. I think that at this point in the race she'll do and say anythng to fracture the Dem.party. She doesn't care all she cares about is winning. She won't win!!!
GO HILLARY!!! Tell it like it is.  The liberal media and blacks use the race card liberally (excuse the pun), whenever it suits their purposes.  Which seems like most of the time.
The Dems don't need the black vote.  Pandering to minorities is what has been killing them at the polls for years.  Once they make it clear that they aren't in the pocket of the minority vote, they will once again be competetive across the board.
I'm a hard working white male and I voted for Obama in my state's primary. However, I also believe that it will be difficult for Obama to win in November because of his race. No matter how flawed John McCain is, he will be supported by a huge number of so-called "independents" who will simply be voting against Obama because of his mixed racial heritage. I also personally know people who are going to vote against him because of his name. There are huge numbers of poor white people in this country who will be opposed to an Obama presidency simply because - in their opinion - he is the wrong color and has the wrong name. IDIOTS ALL!!!

We have a very very long way to go.
This is a definite double standard that white people can't state a truthful fact if the word black is in the sentence. Hillary should stay in the race so we can find out more about her and Obama. I fought for racial equality, as many of my peers did in the '60s and '70. I used to be an Obama supporter, but not now, since I have seen all the negativity in his campaign. He also does not answer questions that are asked of him. He goes off topic with his answers. His speeches lack substance, and do not spell out his plans and policies. LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS - THERE ARE NO CONCRETE IDEAS IN HIS SPEECHES!!
For once, she speaks the absolute truth, even if people don't agree, and yeah, maybe she should not have said it, nonetheless...it is the truth!
How can she represent people of ANY COLOR in good faith if she feels this way.  Plus the polls show Obama has won Nebreska, Wyoming, Kansas, Wisconsin, etc....so these are not the results from the races, it is the way SHE FEELS and New York is a very diverse state so how can she represent the people of color.  When she was sworn in it she swore not to discriminate which I feel she has deminstrated she can not do so I ask who is going to ask her to step down and maybe start a small business with Sptizer and David Duke.  American and America needs to join against this hatred and work together with ALL OUR brothers and SISTERS and prove to ourselves and the world why we are the Super Power of Alll Super Powers.  Not because of our differences but Our Similarities!
The elephant(the race card) has been in the room for a long time and has finally been unleashed.
Her comments may have not been politically correct but they were in the vernacular of a teen "spot on."
Not only do Americans vote along party lines, some also vote along racial lines.  We can do many things regarding this election; we can further divide along racial lines or we can begin to have the courageous conversaton about race.  The latter is long overdue.
Hillery has ran the Whitehouse once what make you people think that she can't do it again?  Don't make the fatel mistake of voting for Obama just because he's black.  All of his answers to important topics has either been changed or left you with a undecisive answer.
she has a "broad base" alright; but it has nothing to do  with educated voters
When is enough of her enough?? Two weeks ago.  Simce no one is contributing to her campaign, will someone please give her enough money to buy some clothes. If she is not gay, why does she try so hard to look like it.  Wear a dress for Gods sake.
Can you imagine that the prissy Mrs. Clinton would use the race card at this stage of the campaign.  The next step for her, out of desperation, is to stomp her feet and use the "N" word to describe Senator Obama.  Or, has she and Bill already done that behind closed doors.  The whites who have voted for her should be insulted by the fact that they are considered to be "uneducated".  They may not have the book learning that she has but they do have common sense and are capable of making important decisions (to vote for her).
This game of chess is over for Mrs. Clinton as Senator Obama so graciously proclaims "checkmate."
Oh please people, shut UP finally.  What is the difference of what the media says when they do "polls" its just that she said it out loud. People are classified everyday, like working class, black, white, man, woman, younger voters, gays, lesbians, etc. so why is it bad now...People are grouped up so they know which people to campaign more to, thats obvious....B Hussein Obama has been winning people people are too scared to admit they want to prove so badly that this country isn't racist that they vote for him just to relieve their guilt, they look past that this man is not qualified, that he has lied about jeremiah wright, that he associates with william ayers, that his wife is angry, all kinds of stuff people just ignore.  Obama says what people want to hear, but I don't HEAR what he's saying...thats because he isn't really saying anything, he's preaching, he's more of a motivater then a president.  And ED, why does Hillary have to wear a dress? Thats the kind of thinking Hillary is up against, sexist bull, men so threatened by a strong woman in a higher position then them, this country is not ready for that nor will they ever be, women are treated worse then blacks, but when will this country accept that?
On thing most commenters here seem to be missing when they write things like "Hillary's just telling the truth"; "Why can Obama say he has the Black vote, but Hillary can't say she has the White vote?" is that that's not the racist part.  The racist part is this: "Sen. Obama's support among WORKING, HARDWORKING AMERICANS, WHITE AMERICANS, is weakening again..."   She's implying that non-white Americans either don't work, or don't work hard.  THAT'S racist.  (She's also implying that the educated people, the one's who've "completed college", and are supporting Obama also don't work hard.)
Racial equality will be attained whe 1/2 of blacks vote for a white president and 1/2 of whites vote for a black president.  Neither one because of the color  of the man or woman  bit because they think its a better choice for ther country.
Something is wrong in america, how fast we forget all the good that President Clinton did, even though his last years he was fighting impeachment, the race cards as people call them began when Obama decides to run as a candiate, simplly put he is a black man, and Hillary is a white female, people are reading to much into what is being said, candiates will defend themselves if attacked or they think they are being ridiculed, to me Hillary was just speaking about what the polls show or seem to show, that white americans would not support a black man. How silly this is all getting, we must look at ourselves as individuals, but remember always we are of the "human race". stay safe and just remember to vote.
I cannot stand the arrogance of the Clintons. They think the presidency is their birth right. Americans of all races know what the country needs and that is why Obama is doing well
Will someone please tell Mika to leave politics alone. The show this morning was yet another example of news commentaries heavily tainted by personal feelings. Mika on the MSNBC Morning Joe Show crossed the line with Clinton bashing. Senator Clinton made no racial remarks.  She stated poll facts that have been reported for weeks. When Senator Obama says he has the support of the African American vote, is he not being racist. In my opinion, Mika and MSNBC has been very pro-Obama since the beginning of the campaign. At least Joe, being the consumate politician, has been trying to report both sides of the issues re both Clinton and Obama. Thanks Joe! In past shows, I have been disgusted with Mika, feeling that she is there simply to look cute and be a straight man to Joe. Her performance this morning shows that she is an intellectual  lightweight, better suited to The View but not suited to the Morning Joe show.
Why has Hillary Clinton been able to get away with paying the race card and no one in the news is all over it. If this was Obama they would be playing it over and over. But for some reasons the Clinton's can say and do anything and get away with it. She says she is for all the people but it seems what she really means is she is just for white people.
This statement goes to show the actual feelings most candidates have, Republican & Democrats, for the American voting public.  They will say or do anything to get elected and then not follow through.  We need to vote them out.  Give someone new a try.  We have better choices than this....
Someone name Rupert made a comment about Rev. Wright. First, I don't agree with what he preached about. But I can tell you this. That man did not go in his church and preached those kind of sermons every Sunday. If that was the case, he wouldn't have had any members and the media would have been all over it (more than they were).

So you need to come up with something else.
Mrs. Clinton knew exactly what she was saying.  It was a calculated comment.  The Clinton campaign has been canvassing superdelegates since Tuesday's vote  and has probably learned something new.  The superdelegates who are elected officials are going to vote for the candidate who won in their district or city.

So without their support she can't win the nomination.  It looks like Michigan's delegation will be seated with Mrs. Clinton having 10 more delegates than Obama.  Therefore the contest is for all intensive purposes over.

I have never seen where, Obama say's something about White folks and he gets away with it, even his Pastor is ignored. Hillary makes a truthful statement and watchout, she is termed a racist, hateful etc, When we had a Clinton in the White House everyone was working and he left a surplus in the coffers, now we are broke, China owns our treasury bonds and are as I type threatening to sell them to the highest bidder
Wake up America, put our people back to work and send all the poisons back to China, I am tired of having an Indian ask me about my bank account etc.One told me he was from New Deli. Our people need that work and there are people that would be willing to work over here.
We have had enough of GWB and don't need another one in office, Mc Cain is just another Bush, 100 years in Iraq, come on, wake up people.
