Obama vs. McCain

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 9:29 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Boston Globe: “Obama and John McCain have pledged a civil campaign, but a war of words erupted yesterday over McCain's suggestion that the terrorist group Hamas prefers Obama for president. Obama, taking a tougher line with the presumptive Republican nominee, said McCain was trying to smear him and was ‘losing his bearings.’”

“Losing his bearings” drew the ire of McCain senior adviser Mark Salter, who penned a sharp memo, ripping Obama for what he saw as Obama blatantly invoking McCain’s age. The New York Post called it “Mac age rage.”

"Losing bearings" has nothing to do with age.  The Obama camp was simply responding to a baseless attack accusing Obama of securing the 'endorsement' of friggin' HAMAS.

How is that keeping the campaign POSITIVE Senator McCain?

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Mark McCain,... he is a man of double standards. Wait for the Obama McCain contest. The man will flip-flop more than Hillary. Just wait...
since bush/cheneys invasion of iraq has been the biggest recruiting tool for hamas the truth is that hamas would prefer another war monger in office and mccant being bush/cheneys bff will only help hamas recruit more terrorist to their ranks.
McCain is Bush in other clothing and Hillary Clinton sounds more like him every day.  Take a look at Peggy Noonan WSJ's comments where Clinton tried to divide us racially in a USA Today article yesterday!  For Clinton to attempt to divide us by race is deplorable! She has ruined any chance to be the "leader" of a very diverse country. And, do the white folks who voted for Obama (I'm 64, a woman and a white worker) not count?  Iowa, Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Illinois, etc., etc..  What a crock and what a desperate move to appeal to the Limbaugh's of the world.  SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR LEGACY IS NO MORE.  Obama will win the nomination and folks like me will put him in the White House.  Women, men, all races, all ages and all say to HECK WITH YOU CLINTONS!
Gobama. Don't let McCain get away with fear-mongering. Nip it in the bud, just like this.
It’s impossible for B. Hussein O. to win the election. He’s unelectable. He will suffer the same fate as Mike Dukakis. Everyone here is entitled to believe what they’d like regardless of the facts - but the FACT is, he will not get ENOUGH of the support of the white voters to win in a general election. He just can’t win, as Paul Begala said, just by getting the AA & the “egghead” vote. The numbers, the NUMBERS don’t support his win in a general election. Hillary is without question a better candidate (meaning a better chance to win the general election) and if I’m a republican, I’d do ANYTHING to make sure that Hussein gets the Democrat nod. He is actually the savior of the Republican party as much as I hate to say it.
Oh Please! Losing your bearings means losing your direction or your way to most people. People getting upset over this silly. Obama did not say losing his marbles which is what they (McCains team) are trying to imply. People need to get a grip!
One of the definitions of "bearing" according to Webster's dictionary is "direction or position in relation to something else."  Losing his bearing has nothing I can find to do with age. Are we starting this again...taking things out of context? Let's not go there because as you know we can list things said by McCain out of context also.
Is anyone really surprized that Hamas prefers Barrack Hussein Obama to win the election?
John McCain - think that he can sneak in comments that he knows are inapproipate and then think no one is smart enough to see through it.   Not this time...You republicans are not going to get away with your slick and sly non-sense.  We will respond to it in every shape, form or fashion.  YOU will not say one thing and then smear the next.  This is not 2000 and you "old head" Republicans are not going to get away with anything.  SO, stop your bickering and expect a comeback response EVERY SINGLE TIME.  YOU will not get away with breaking the rules this time.

We Democrats are not going to help make this easy for you ; you don't run a damn thing here..the playing grounds are level.  So don't come into this campaign thinking your are in charge....because you are not and you will never be for at least the next 8 years.
Senator McCain has lost his ethical bearings.

How anyone could give deference to this garbage is beyond my comprehension. Many republican, mass media and pundits simply do not get it yet.

These old personal attacks are worn out relics of the politics of the past. If the candidate does not speak to the real issues they are going to be dead in the water, just like Clinton last Tuesday. If you bet against the intelligence of the American people as has been done in the past you are going to lose.

I hear how Senator Obama has no experience.

No experience driving this country into a ditch over the last 8 years maybe.

Vote for more pandering about gas tax holidays that will do nothing but give big oil a huge profit and give the consumer little or nothing, that puts us further in to debt, that lets our infrastructure continue to disintegrate, that throws 100s of thousand of people across the country out of work?

Vote for supreme court judges who will set the country back 50 years on basic rights of its citizens and allows politicians to use the Constitution as toilet paper?

Vote for a continued never ending war in Iraq that does not make us safer nor address our real enemy in Afghanistan?

Vote for wire taps, torture, suspension of Habeas Corpus and dictatorship?

Vote for people who promote Xenophobia, religious intolerance and homophobia?

Not me,

My vote is for Senator Obama.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHY you do not give the WHOLE  TRUTH about Obama??????? Please read HIS OWN WORDS...
Let's get the truth out!
Subject: A few lines from Obama's books "In his own words: You decide and research

This man wants to be our President  of the United States of AMERICA and control  Our government.

Below are a few lines from Obama's books ' in his own words:

Does is appear he wants to unify our country as he has been saying.

Pay close attention to the last statement from his book.

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'

From 'Dreams of My Father ':  ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From 'Dreams of My Father':  'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela.'

From 'Audacity of Hope' :  'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

Well, first of all, 'losing his bearings' was not an age-hit.  I haven't talked to one person who heard the comments and picked up on an age-thing at all.

But if you want to claim it was age, then fine.  Age is a legitimate issue for a 71-yr-old man taking the presidential office--and on who won't even release his medical records, which are known to have some big issues in the past.  Asking about McCain's health (and age) is as relevant as asking for his tax returns!!!

And lastly, thanks to McCain's man for once again bringing up the age problem.  ...Since NOONE 'got' that message til Salter restated it that way.
Wow, I saw Obama's response 10 tens and never once thought it was an attack on his age.

That's a good one.  Nonetheless, Obama is right about condemning McCain for what he said.  McCain is trying to tie Obama with a terrorist group.  This in my opinion is the most un-patriotic thing an American can do to another American.  It is my belief that callinng someone un-patriotic is in itself un-patriotic.  Shame on you John McCain.
McCain WILL run a negative campaign, with his temper there is no way that he can keep from it.

Obama on the other hand may not have to run a negative campaign. Like Clinton, McCain will probably handle that for Obama.

McCain is a flip flopper. He speaks from both sides of his mouth, all the time. Yes, he is a war hero. Yes, he has experience. Yes, he is Bush term III. Yes, he has no clue on the economy. Yes, he wants to overturn ROE v. WADE (a woman's right to choose.)Yes, he wants to privatize health care and make us pay. Yes, he's for a gas holiday ( that will ruin our roads , cost 300,000 jobs and will increase demand for oil - raising its global price.) Yes, some HRC supporters say they will vote for him over the junior senator from Illinios ( voting against their own interest and better judgement). Because of the excitment created in the democratic party, our numbers have grown and outpaced the GOP by a wide margin. Even if some dems won't vote for our nominee, we'll still hold a far superior numerical advantage to the opposition. Who is excited about John McCain? I respect my elders; however, my grandparents can't relate to my issues, they just remember the good ole days. The truth is the good ole days, weren't all that good. The GOP will attach and attempt to destroy sen. Obama. The same old politics will not work this time. The people are more aware today and are closely following their canidate's actions. We don't want dirty politics. we want an honest debate, on the issues that matter. America can and will move past hatred and division, and racism. Politics used to be boring, that's why the majority of the electorate was older. Times are changing, and we want a differant type of politics. Young america doesn't care about race, color, or creed. We care about the issues and who can meet them. McCain or Obama, make your case.... we are listening!
Well it shows how good Obamas word is. For NOT!Hamus leader did say he would like to see Obama pres. What is the big surprise here? Obama's friend Carter went to talk to them and prob told them of Obamas greatness and how he may be there friend also. They know about his endorsements from Wright ,Farrakhan,Ayers,Black Panthers, and many more that are buried for now.He has the muslim for politics endorseing him and fund raising for him.He is what he is and he can try all he wants .These people dont stand behind him cause h eis against what they all stand for. Anti American and Anti jewish state
Ok this let's us all know who smart the McCain camp is.   Had nothing to do with his age.  And they brought it up to keep that on people's minds.  STUPID!!!!
Maybe “Losing his bearings” was not the right words (he “misspoke”) but McCain’s words are just as annoying.  Call it a draw and move on.   We’re all kind of sick about putting words in other people’s mouths and dissecting words that only a political can distort their meaning.
I think McCain and his campaign are super sensitive to the age issue for good reason.  McCain is a flawed candidate from the beginning.  His age is issue #1, his economic policy is lame, his temper is a BIG issue, and I question his ethical, his moral, and his intellectual ability to lead this country.  He has a horrible personality and I see no way he will be able to repair the damage to this country's world image.
Ok so it's ok for McBush to try and link Obama to a terrorist group on supposition. Then when Obama defends himself he is check this new one out (playing the age card )against McBush. Johnny Boy said he wanted to play nice, or was that he wants Obama to play nice while he treats him like a pinata. I think loosing his bearing was in reference to the Straight Talk Express loosing it's sense of direction. This is realy sad that the republican party has to make mythic statements about a man to try to gain an advantage.
Barack Hussien Obama-choice of terrorists both foreign and domestic
I intend, to try, and enjoy this next stage of the campaign. I have confidence in my candidate, and his team. I have renewed faith in the wisdom of the American people.
What the hell does that have to do with age??? Mark Salter is getting confused here, he is thinking of the phrase "losing your marbles," which is NOT what Obama said. A "bearing" is a direction, a course heading. To "lose your bearing" means to lose your way or to go off course, and was specifically referring to McCain's declaration of running a clean campaign.

Quit trying to make something out of nothing.
Losing his bearings....is not an age related remark.

For McCain to think it was, is a sign of his weakness and his willingness to fight around the 'margins' rather than stand-up and fight on the real issues.

A fight he will lose.

Anyone who thinks he can get thru this GE without his temper exploding in some very public venue does not know McCain.

I'm 66-years old and if McCain feels that words like "losing his bearings" has anything to do with age, then he is way too sensitive and is looking for a fight in all the wrong places. Losing his bearing when talking about him smearing someone is the same as saying his moral compass needs to be adjusted. The fact that he has already forgotten that he said he was taking the high road is more of an issue of age. Is this like him forgetting where he left his keys?
oh come on... i don't know where they got age out of that 'lose your bearings' comment. it just show their own irrelevant insecurities. i didn't even think about it until they tried to play victim and pull that out of a hat.

by losing his bearings, could it perhaps mean that McCain has compromised so many of his old views and beliefs to "fit in" as a Republican nominee? that he lost his bearings by losing his convictions and setting them aside all for political gain?

stop crying wolf McSame!!!
Unfortunately for McCain, he did not realize that Sen. Obama does not have the same need to handle him with "Kid Gloves" that he did for Sen. Clinton.

My take on this is; since McCain started it with the smear, he should be the one to respond personally to Obama putting him in his place. He has after all stated that he would not run this kind of campaign.

Oh, and by the way folks; he really is old; why would you bring it up?
Sounds like round one goes to Obama. Why in the world the McCain camp insists on reminding people their candidate is old is beyond me.
Don't get into the game of offended victim with democrats. It's a waste of time and you'll lose. Don't waste time on cheap shots like Hamas supports him either. You could go after him on domestic drilling, but HEY you don't support that either.
Give me a freakin break!!! Do people in the news only listen in snippets? Do you guys ever take the full context of a comment or do you adjust to make a story. If you actually listen to the comment in context Senator Obama was speaking to the type of campaign that Senator McCain promised to run and that his comments concerning Hamas were not consistent.
Obama may as well drop of the race for president. He doen't have the support of the baby boomers or the over 60.There is no way in hell that this country will have a black president especialy one that is so dumb he can't even talk without saying AH.How in the sam hell can we elect Obama. He has been a senator for three years and has said that he never got into Washington but he knew it needed a change. If he never got into washington how in the hell would he know that. His change is turning the WHITE HOUSE into the Black House. This country will never have a black man telling the Whites what to do.He has no experienc.Of course the Alqueda hopes he wins.If he wins they know this country will be a great targetbesides obama is a muslim because his spokes person hs said that Obama is a muslim but not practicing one.get that pracricing one.He is the Anti Christ and if elected he would bring great harm to this country.
Typical repubs, whine and cry about anything and everything, regardless of what they say. I don't really care about mccain's age, it is his hypocricy and ignorance that makes him unqualified to be president. Mccain = bush.
McAgeRage better get over it.  The guy s in his 70s, and known to have a mean temper.  You think those things won't come out in the general, despite his already losing his bearings from his pledge of civility?
What a laugh that Cindy McCain, the elitist beer bimbo, says her husband won't run a negative campaign.  Then ofcourse her addled brain husband starts the negativity that Hamas supports Obama.  I find this laughable since Bush/Cheney/McCain are the best poster boys for firing up new radicals the Muslim extremists have.

Go Obama 08/12!
"Losing his Bearings" is a lot better than when he "Bears his Losing" in November.
"Losing his bearings" is not a judgement of age.  Methinks the lady doth protest too much!

Why are the Hamas comments bad?  It's all code words.  I'll explain it...and I'll use small words so Republicans can understand...

Premise #1:  Hamas BAD!

Premise #2:  Hamas like Obama!

Premise #3:  If Hamas like Obama, Obama BAD!

Senator Obama is correct in pointing out that he and McSame have the same view of Hamas...

...but we all know the GOP has never let discussions of policy interfere in their attempts to undermine a candidate.
of course Hamas is going to prefer Obama.   Inexperience and his already indicated position of weakness and lack of diplomatic skill would definitely be preffered by our enemies(hamas will never be freindly to the US).

they would be disturbed by Mccain as he is much more experienced in the world arena as well as have=ing the resolve of a former warrior who has been through the most stressful situation that a human being could be placed in; held captive by hostile forces.

in my opinion Obama and his naive approach would reduce the US to a laughing stock of the world.   you think that the world does not respect the US at present,  it is because they fear our great power.   Obama would reduce our stature by showing weakness to our adversaries and detractors.  No way he's getting my vote.   NObama.    Mccain 08  all the way!!!
I saw this on the news last night and it was kinda funny how McCain's group jumped on this.  Now if Obama said something like "Oh, Senator McCain is just getting senile with his comments."  Or "His grey hair is affecting his brain" then an argument could possibly be made about the age issue.  But what McCain said about Obama and Hamas is the same fear tactics that has peppered this presidential race from day one.  It just sounds like paranoia to me.  I guess everything that comes out of any candidates mouths about McCain will be seen as a knock against his age.  I guess age is more of a fear for McCain's camp than it is a weapon for Obama's.
lucky enough to be married to heiresses worth over $100 million.

If the middle class is knee-capped and not able to bear the burden of completely financing the government while the rich get to keep their tax cuts and receive future cuts, who is going to pay for anything?

If the good paying jobs are moving over seas, who will be able to afford to buy anything?

If the Republican version of "Free Markets" means socialized "losses" and privatized "profits" a la Bear Stearns? Who is going to pay for this?

You can't keep cutting middle class income, threaten social security, allowing pension programs to be raped and gutted, and still expect the middle class to pay for everything. If there is one more "let them eat cake" moment coming from the Republican Party, there will be an uprising and it will not be pretty. You can kick an electorate only so many times before they come back fighting.

I don't know which is worse, Hillary's campaign mismanagement and debts which keep her from paying for the union labor that she uses or John McCain using taxpayer subsidized prison labor instead.
I have questions for Senator McCain, since not all of us are lucky enough to be married to heiresses worth over $100 million.

Mcsame will soon find out what HRC has also found out over time; that Obama has little trouble dealing with these half baked attacks. Not because he's a master spinner but because his simple common sense responses show how ridiculous the attacks are.
That said, peace is a lot cheaper than war in terms of both life and wealth. The terrorists are more likely to listen to someone like Obama who they say they "like" as opposed to Mcsame whose policies are expensively similar to Bush. If Hamas likes Obama, he will find it a lot cheaper to protect Israel, and Palestine I might add, and that's a good thing. Yes, I can hear the right wing neocons retorting that this is a naive position. I would just remind them that nobody is born a terrorist, so their attitudes are not set in stone. At one time this country also considered Nelson Mandela a terrorist. Dick Cheney still does!

Hey FR, post this. Every voice needs to be heard!
McCain is about to find out how the so called nice guy Obama runs his nasty campaign.  The end of divisive politics? Yeah right.
I don't understand why everyone is saying Obama said things about McCain when McCain said the first comments.  What Obama said was true lets face it McCain is old, but what McCain said is just a radical statement about Obama trying to get the people to believe that Obama is connected to Hammas which we all know by now is not true.  You always want to state fact that are true.  Age may be a sensitive subject but when you throw stones you have to be ready to be hit back.  Everyone is feeling sorry for McCain for the statement but lets face it............
In sailing, we say we lost our bearings when we get off course. I know Senator McCain is rightly concerned about this age, but I hope he isn't going to apply an age-filter to every remark Senator Obama makes. I'm anxious for a debates on real issues.
I would encourage readers to watch the entire CNN/Wolf Blitzer interview with Sen. Obama, as well as his address in Raleigh NC following his primary victory there. His intelligence, composure, and policy prescriptions will make him our next President. I'm the proud son of a Vietnam-Era combat veteran, and I respect John McCain as a man, but I can't afford 4 more years of Bush-style Republicanism, and neither can most Americans.
White guys for Obama!
think the argument that Obama cannot beat McCain the funniest joke I've ever heard. There are many reasons that all the pundits, media & Hillary Clinton herself are overlooking. For starters, remember back when the primaries took place the democrat registrants doubled & sometimes tripled the GOP's registrants in almost every state.Even if Obama lost half of Hillary's supporters(which consisted some of the Rush Limbaugh effect), Obama would still be challenging for McCain to overcome. Also I seriously doubt by the fall, the numbers that defect would be even close to the numbers now while tensions are so high.Secondly McCain's base support is amonng older white Americans.I think Obama can carry the majority of young/middle age white votes, black vote, & probable even over half the latina vote. Not to mention he will be very competitive with the other minorities such as indians, arabs,& other immigrants because of his peaceful regards to other nations.Age will also play more of an important role once the debates take place.Once you have a stout vibrant Obama at the podium going toe to toe with his GOP rival, it will make McCain look febble, old, & stagnant.A picture can be worth a thousand words.Lastly, we all know John McCain isn't the best on the debating front.Everytime he opens his mouth he seems to says something stupid to eliminate one core group at a time.Prime example, his 100 years of war eliminated the young voters since they are more nuanced in terms of thinking of other countries around the world.Next, McCain is working on killing the women vote invoking judges that threaten Roe vs Wade. Then to top it off he's killing off the working class supporting Nafta.Believe me Obama has been taking notes, & you best believe Obama will be hitting those talking points one after another.Meanwhile John McCain slow on his feet will probably add one gaffe after another to the list.I don't think americans should put all their eggs in the McBush basket.I think Obama will be happy to have this debate with John McCain!
John McCain act's as though he throws no stones. It's politic's at best. When Obama takes the White house they will nit pick and scrutinize every little move he does. The republican party think's they do no wrong and are such christian do gooders....If that's the case quit trying to look for the bad in people but uplift the good.
McCain has a very condescending air where Obama is concerned. He gives me the impression that he always thinks, "how dare this young, up-start think that he deserves anything more than I do?"  He reminds me of my uncles, who fought me tooth and nail in our family business because of some perceived notion that nothing I could bring to the table was valuable because they were older and supposedly more experienced. Its like wresting our future from the cold, withered hands of the past.
Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.
