The end game: The scenarios

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 9:33 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Post's Balz writes, "Party strategists sketch out at least three scenarios for a possible end to the Clinton campaign. The cleanest envisions Clinton suddenly deciding the race is over and, for the good of the party, deciding to suspend her candidacy. That could happen after next week's primary in West Virginia, which she is expected to win easily, or the following week, when she is expected to win Kentucky and Obama is favored to win Oregon."

"The messy scenario would see Clinton continuing her campaign all the way to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in late August -- arguing that she would be the stronger nominee against Sen. John McCain -- and mounting challenges before the party's credentials committee over the seating of Michigan and Florida delegates."

"At this point, neither the clean nor messy endgame seems likely -- to strategists in either campaign or to other Democrats watching the race. Clinton vowed to stay in the race but also has pledged that, if it is clear Obama has the nomination sewn up, to support him and work to unify the party and defeat McCain. That suggests the third scenario, that the race will not end until June 3 or soon after. Given what she said Wednesday about staying in until there is a nominee, and given the likelihood of rapid movement of superdelegates to Obama once the primaries are over (if not before), Clinton could declare the race over at that point.”

“A fourth scenario envisions Clinton being forced suddenly to suspend her campaign because she is out of money. Already she and her husband have lent the campaign more than $11 million. In addition, the campaign as of April had reported debts of about $10 million."

The Los Angeles Times notes how there's no clear path to victory for Clinton, nor a clear path to the exit. “One Clinton aide said Thursday: ‘There is a profound sadness’ among the staff. ‘I don't think anyone sees that there's a clear path to victory here.’”

“Richard Schiffrin, a national finance co-chairman for Clinton, is scheduled to meet with other fundraisers and her next week. Schiffrin said he would tell her: "Let's look at the situation as it exists and think about whether there's a credible path to the nomination, and if there isn't, what's Plan B?’”

“He added: ‘The bottom line is she's going to make a decision that in my view will be in the best interests of the party and the country.’”

The New York Times’ editorial page, which has endorsed Clinton but has been equally critical of the tone of her campaign, fires this warning shot at Team Clinton: “We believe it is her right to stay in the fight and challenge Senator Barack Obama as long as she has the desire and the means to do so. That is the essence of the democratic process. But we believe just as strongly that Mrs. Clinton will be making a terrible mistake - for herself, her party and for the nation - if she continues to press her candidacy through negative campaigning with disturbing racial undertones. We believe it would also be a terrible mistake if she launches a fight over the disqualified delegations from Florida and Michigan.”

More: “Mrs. Clinton claimed in an interview with USA Today that she would be the better nominee because a recent poll showed that ‘Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again.’ She added: ‘There’s a pattern emerging here.’ Yes, there is a pattern - a familiar and unpleasant one. It is up to Mrs. Clinton to change it if she hopes to have any shot at winning the nomination or preserving her integrity and her influence if she loses.”

Campaigning in Oregon yesterday, Clinton said, per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli: “People say to me all the time, ‘Well are you going to keep going?’ Well yes, of course, I’m going to keep going. And why am I going to keep going? I’m going to keep going because you keep going… That’s what you do, if you believe that the future can be better than the present. I believe that with all my heart. As I look out at all of you, I know, we can turn this country around.”

Memoli also notes that, given its mail-in ballot, Oregon is a much different primary contest. Voters already have their ballots in hand, and by some estimates, most have already voted. For those still waiting, Hillary Clinton has some ideas. “I hope that you’ll really pay attention to this campaign,” she said. “Those of you who’ve already made up your mind to support me, send it in. If you think you’ve made up your mind to support my opponent, wait a while. Keep thinking. Keep listening. Keep watching. Keep hoping for that debate, which would really make it a very clear choice that you’d be able to see as we talked about the issues that affect Oregon.”

Clinton also made note of the fact that she’s accepted an invitation from the state party to debate, and even offered to do so on short notice. “They asked would we be willing to debate, I said absolutely, any time anywhere,” she said. “I heard that my opponent just changed his schedule, he’s going to be in Portland tomorrow. I’m going to be in Portland tomorrow. I’ll meet anywhere for a debate… And I’m sure we can set up so that the people who asked the questions, you know, asked questions that were substantive about where we stand on the issues.”

WSJ lead editorial is headlined the "Clinton Divorce": "Truth be told, this was always a marriage more of convenience than love. The party's progressives never did like Bill Clinton's New Democrat ways, but after Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis they needed his epic political gifts to win back the White House. They hated him for their loss of Congress in 1994, but they tolerated Dick Morris and welfare reform to keep the presidency in 1996. The price was that they had to put their ethics in a blind Clinton trust. Whitewater and the missing billing records, Webb Hubbell, cattle futures and "Red" Bone, the Lincoln Bedroom, Johnny Chung and the overseas fund-raising scandals, Paula Jones and lying under oath, Monica and the meaning of ‘is.’ Democrats, or all of them this side of Joe Lieberman and Pat Moynihan, defended the Clintons through it all. Everything was dismissed as a product of the ‘Republican attack machine,’ an invention of the ‘Clinton haters,’ or ‘just about sex.’

The gloating editorial ends: “It took 10 years, but you might say Democrats have finally voted to impeach."

I certainly hope so.  The Clintons are fairly well-known for having large political egos.  I hope those egos don't get in the way this Novemnber.

Doubtful.  She will do what is best for Hillary Clinton, as she always does.
Ouch.
Mabe all three will drop out then  we can find someone a lot better. Well that wouldn't be to hard.
The scenario is this.......

1) Clinton lost, Obama wins
2) General election starts and Obama makes McCain look silly.
3) Obama wins election.

Fairly simple scenario to me.

You boomers are all so MEAN to each other.  Phew.  TGIF, America!  Go-bama!
The Democrats are denial if they think this nomination isn't going to be a floor fight at the convention. The Clintons have been the leaders of the Democratic party for nearly 18 years, they aren't going to give up this nomination without a fight. And they should fight. Obama has skated through the nomination process without an real examination of him, his ideas, his background, or his policies. Only in the last month has that examination begun, and the result is he's losing most of the states primaries. He is unelectable.
Seems like the lions are circling and snarling over who gets the first bite at the carcas.  Seems like the WSJ has staked out first dibs.
HRC.... Is in the wrong party she sounds like a REPUB.
in tone and style.
Hillary Clinton deserves a job within the Obama
Administration....Let's see..

DOG CATCHER, Blue Collar inspector, older women
evaluator, white skin tester, sun tan oil/ SPF specialist or street cleaner...

Don't you think America?
HRC's campaign might not be so financially strapped if they didn't have "HIS" and "HERS" jets criss-crossing the country.  And like McCain taking advantage of his wife's corporate jet, is it Bill's foundation picking up his T&E?
The money bothers me, so does her continuing to bash Obama and the playing of the race deck.  But the money really bothers me.  Her campaign is massively in debt, no other candidate (well, most others) would have the resources to go on at this point.  She doesn't have the money to go on except for her personal wealth, which she is loaning her campaign.  Is she not going to require that this money be paid back...is she going to hamstring Obama trying to raise money for the general?  What about the little guys she's "borrowing" from, the unpaid vendors?

Its just a big old mess.

Obama for our best future.
HRC.... Is in the wrong party she sounds like a REPUB.

The Clinton exit strategy will seem less important, I'm guessing, when the media gets tired of thinking about it.

We've transitioned from the media perpetuating that we've had a race since Wisconsin, and maybe since Virginia, to now a media fascination with a Clinton "death watch."

At some point, the media will realize the voters (i.e., viewers) pivot faster than television "journalists" think, and will more quickly focus themselves on Obama v McCain. Once that realization sets in, Clinton will be discussed less, and her plans for an announcement will become a secondary story.
I wish I believed Clinton would make a decision based on what was best for the party and the country, but I just see that big, quacking ego up there and wonder whether she's just too compelled at this point to stop anytime soon.  Let's hope so, for everyone's sake.
I see evidence that Hillary will take the messy road all the way to the convention! She is behaving irrationally now and will continue so. White, female, middle-aged, low-income, evangelical and for Obama, Hermine Middletown PA
Hillary "Republican" Clinton needs to show us Democrats that she's a team player and quit while she's not so far behind.  The longer she drags this primary farce on the more she loses respect from the majority of us.  The longer the supers sit on the fence the longer McCain has to campaign without getting blasted properly for his numerous verbal gaffes and flip flops.

Go Obama 08/12!
The best scenario would be for the super-d's to get some guts and endorse Senator Obama.  He's won and she's hurting the party.  Open your eyes.  Don't be so sure the wounds Clinton's inflicting are capable of being healed.  She doesn't care...she's shooting for 2012.
HILLARY IS LIKE A 'SPOILED CHILD' WHO CANNOT 'PLAY BY THE RULES OF THE GAME' ................

And She KEEPS THREATENING to Take Her TOYS and NOT SHARE THEM WITH OBAMA.

HILLARY IS P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C.

'THE END GAME: THE SCENARIOS'

the end game scenarios have already been played out, obama won, move on, and please make pat buchanan take his meds, he still thinks hillary is in the race
WSJ quote is fabulous, and just about sums it up!
Impeach faster!  Time to move ahead.  No time to stay entangled with the lowest common denominator.

Let's be better than them...

When Hillary gave her statment, early Tuesday, at that car racing venue, saying that she would wait, and see what the voters have to say after the polls closed, I felt that it was over.

I feel relaxed, and will not let the Clinton's shenanigans upset me anymore.
I did not vote for Slick Willy because I found him lacking in character and integrity and Hillary and he are obviously a perfect match.  The Clintons are despicable - turn the page.
We can only hope that Senator Obama does NOT pick Sen. Clinton as a running mate. That would almost insure his demise. After all people who get in the Clintons way have "fatal accidents, commit suicide," or wind up in prison. The Clintons are yesterday the Obamas are today AND the future. The future we want for our children and grandchildren. The Clintons CAN NOT be trusted. Also she will have to give all her time and energy to the campaign funds fraud case all 3 Clintons are involved in.
I hope that Obama does not take this woman for granted. At the risk of sounding paranoid, I do NOT trust her one iota and I think she still has some dirty tricks up her sleeve. I believe that manipulation,  blatant lying,  "spinning", and deceitful machinations are what has kept her in the game; NOT toughness or grit. I am a psychologist and I can tell you guys that she is not delusional.  I truly believe that she still has some plans to try to derail this guy's campaign and convinve the superdelegates that he is unelectable because he has known some nut cases in his life. Also, I hope that Obama does not make some strategic mistakes at this point, as she will pounce on anything. I heard that Barack will not even campaign in West Virginia. I hope that this is NOt true or else Clinton will characterize this as being another example that he does not care about the average, hard-working American. In short, she will try to reignite Bittergate if he just ignores West Virginia and Kentucky, even though we know that he is concentrating on Oregon for practical reasons. She will say, " See, he knows that his message doesn't resonate with the working class, so he does not even have the guts to come here." He should not allow these states to go uncontested and just allow her to run up HUGE numbers in these states. Go, Obama!!
Why is the media ignoring the Clintons fraud case?????
Why are my comments NOT being posted????
Since the Clintons are loaning money in great sums to the Hillary Clinton campaign, it would be nice for the electorate to have a better understanding of the source of funds. The Clintons disclosing their 2007 Tax returns and schedules would help.
I support Sen. Obama, but understand Sen. Clinton's singlemindedness in finishing what she started.  She seems to believe she is carrying the torch for all women, and she is also doing this for the history books. However, her methods of bullying her way through this campaign are extremely disturbing.

I wonder if the New York Times regrets endorsing her?
Hillbillys don't worrie "Those so called supporters"White People" are going to line up and throw there hard earned money at you. These people slay me They have over a 109 million in there pocket from the former prez lobbist speeches he gives overseas and right here(The Peter Paul) case comes to mindOpps sorry that was a campaign fraud case.He took a bundle from him.Do you think that the hillys care about anyone but them selfs.Keep talking no one is listening. The only reason they won't quit is there plan is to destroy Obama to help her good friend McCrusty. Then it will be the hillbillys back for another try.
why are the sooperdoopers not all making their pledges? What do they know that we do not? They must know we are all waiting on baited breath for their decisions.
Of course there should be an Oregon debate!  Senator Obama has not been fully vetted and there are still important questions to be asked:

1. What's your favorite color?
2. Why did the chicken cross the road?
3. If a tree falls in a forest and nobody's there to hear it does it make a sound?
4. Boxers or briefs?
5. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

PLEASE...what's the point?
Hillary will not run out of money. The chinese dishwashers haven't made a donation in months. They're flush with cash.
I think that the Clinton’s are getting what they deserve. Having said that, why are people upset about what Hillary is saying and not commenting on the fact that in many places Obama is receiving up to 90% of the black vote. What that says is that 90% of blacks will not vote for a white woman when she is running against a black man.

After so many years of playing the race card against others it is good to see how racism is now tearing up the Democratic Party.

Democrats have also demagogued the “class” card and this too is now biting them on the behind.

The liberal MSM which has long schilled for these bozos also shares the blame for helping to trash what was once, many decades ago, a political party a person felt proud to belong to.
End game should be Obama dropping out.

Sound good to me.
“He added: ‘The bottom line is she's going to make a decision that in my view will be in the best interests of the party and the country.’”
--He means she will look out for her own interests.  She certainly has not demonstrated as of late that her interests lie in either the party or country.  Once again, I'm fine with people looking out for themselves, just be honest about it.  Clinton's ease at hiding the truth and building up a cover is probably THE reason that turned me off from voting for her.  She lacks honesty, integrity and unfortunately my respect.
MSNBC please post this -

My heart truly goes out to Hilary. I do believe that she is the better candidate. The crucial states confirmed that. Her campaign made some crucial mistake. I would forever blame Mark Penn on that. Obama had the proper support and the right people in his campaign - thanks to the 14 former Clinton staff members.

I can only hope and pray that after all the mudsling the media and Obama's bloggers threw at her, that she gets the respect she deserves after all these.

Many bought into the Republican argument about the Clintons - they shrewed, cannot be trusted, etc...
She passed on running in 2004, she finished her 1st term as a Senator, her attendance in the Senate is exemplary while campaigning compared to the other two. She has served this country well and for sure will continue to do so in whatever capacity she can.

I am appaled by reading this site and the others. How Obama supporters had branded her names, etc... while Obama preach to bridge the gap and become a uniter. How is that possible when you can't influence your supporters to do exactly that?

I wish him all the luck in the coming elections if nominated. I sure hope that he has toughened up and learned from Hilary's training. Those are kid gloves by the way. And that no surprises from his closet comes out to haunt the dems in November.

This is from the heart. Hilary you have my highest respects and admiration. All the best come what may. Continue to serve the country even if few remembers it or appreciates it.
The clear path is to gracefully concede that her candidacy was eclipsed by another powerful, if not better, candidate with a resonating message that was more attractive than hers.
Is she graceful?
Does she really care about the country and doing the best thing for her party?
The next days and weeks will tell us.
Don't be stupid.  Just listen to her.  She will scorch the earth, killing, burning, and "OBLITERATING" everything in her path.  She has always acted the part of the spoiled child. We all know what happens when a spoiled child does not get her way--a tantrum.

scorched earth
Very well written blog. Good insihgt. Nice writing.

Just amazing to me how little patience media types have for the political process.  The "flood" you seek IS underway, just happening over more than one news cycle.

Caution is warrented because no one wants the media to claim Obama won this only because of super delegates.  Appearances matter, and all concerned want it to be the voters in Oregon who push Obama over the top.
This is to the foolish politician who signed that letter.
She did not come from behind to win Indiana like Hillary states she did.  It is a lie.
Also, Had it not been for Rush Lim. Fanatic Chaos followers Obama would have won Indiana.
Exit Polls show that 7-8 percent of Hillary's votes came from the Rush Limb. Fanatics, who want to destroy the democratic party.
As politicains, I would think you would be smarter.

If Hillary would go ahead and pick Monica Lewinsky as her running mate, that would keep Bill busy and out of the way. Then all she would need to do, is promise to wear a KKK robe and hood if she thinks it will get her more votes.
Holy God!!! This WSJ editorial is a bit honest even for me.  My goodness.  I wonder how long they have been waiting to write this obituary.
Billary,

Stop!!! Go home!!! Bow out gracefully......And stop with the racists comments. So tacky and shameful.
Hillary,

You will be able to laugh at all of these Obama supporters when he bombs in the GE, you told everyone that you are more electable against McCain and you will have the last laugh...  Hopefully after 3 failed attempts at the White House they will grow up and vote on electability and not Idealism..
GO AWAY HILLARY!!!!  JUST GO AWAY, YOU CAN'T WIN, GO AWAY BEFORE YOU HAND THE PRESIDENCY TO MCCAIN.  ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, JUST GO AWAY!!!!!!!
It's over will someone please show Mrs. Clinton the door!
I like how she just keeps spending money, and going more and more in debt.  But lets not forget that she wants Obama in the end to pay it all off for her, even the money she has put in.  Where is that fair his money should be used to help him become President.  And look at it another way, she can't keep with in a budget now what was she going to do when she had control of even more money.  I think we should not help her out with money if she keeps spending and making the debt more.
Stepping down? Why?  There are more primaries. The race issue perpetrated by Obama really translate that the backbone of Hillary's support...poor, white, uneducated, middle class Americans do not vote for Obama cause they are racist or dumb.  Just like they try to paint the Clintons as racists.  Obama and his machine support the idea so the superdelegates reason they cannot deny the black candidate.  Do they think those dumb poor white people are all racist anyway and will blindly support him this fall to stop McCain?  Their real fear is that Hillary is right, she is best to face McCain...that's the reason for the attempt of the media and the Obama machine to paint the Clintons as racist.  Well guess what, Hillary is right.  I for one resent being called a racist for my future vote for Clinton and Obama will not have my vote in November.  I see his vague promises and lies for what they are and not some new panecea for change with my interest at heart.  His claims of being above the fray and then stoops even lower with the flippant tones in his voice each time he talks about Hillary, his blatant misrepresentation of Hillary's plans, his outright lies and all done with an arrogant air.  Then justifying that he cannot be an elitist cause he was raised by a single mother and came from poor beginnings.  His arrogance is nothing but elitist.

Hillary's desire for the oil companies pay the federal taxes for the summer is no answer for long range goals but pandering for votes is rather elitist.  People on the edge and having trouble affording commuting and eating may have a few more meals with the few bucks saved.  Of course those purporting it as pandering can afford to wait on long term fixes and justify it cause they are not thinking about the person hurting right now.  Is that not elitist?  So many tactics and acts by Obama continue to appear elitist to me.
