HRC: 'I am no shrinking violet'

Posted: Saturday, May 10, 2008 12:30 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
LOUISVILLE, KY -- Hillary Clinton touted her electability and commitment to the Bluegrass State as she was the only candidate to address Democrats tonight.

"The only way we can have a Democrat in that White House come next January is to win in November, and we cannot win unless we can win 270 electoral votes," she said. "Look at the map, figure out where we’re going to get those votes, and which candidate is more likely to be able to win those votes in November against John McCain. I have taken on the Republicans before and I have won."

Many speakers tonight noted the absence of Barack Obama. Terry McBrayer, a former state party chair and superdelegate, drew some boos from Obama supporters on hand when he said he contacted a local milk company to put Obama’s picture on a milk carton.

Clinton herself noted she was the only candidate to come, saying it was important "because Kentucky always picks the president." She later said, as she did in West Virginia earlier this week, that Democrats "for too long" have let states like this one "slip out of the Democratic column."

"Too many people felt our party didn’t speak to their values and concerns," she said. "Well I believe if you don’t stand for hard-working middle-class Americans you don’t stand for much. And it’s now up to the Democratic Party and our eventual nominee to make that case."

Clinton also talked up her middle-class roots and her reputation as a fighter, saying in the home of the Louisville Slugger that she would "always go to bat" for the middle class, because that is "where I came from."

"One thing you know about me is I am no shrinking violet," she said. "If I tell you I will fight for you, that is exactly what I intend to do."

Speaking before Clinton, Gov. Steve Beshear had some fighting words of his own. He tied the plight of the national Democrats to local ones, having reclaimed the office from a Republican incumbent last year. He said Democrats were "problem solvers."

"I can think of only one Republican that could be a problem solver," he added. "And that is Vice President Cheney, if he would just take George on a hunting trip."

Clinton sticks up for health care plan
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Hillary Clinton held a roundtable discussion this morning in which she made the case not so much for her campaign but for her plan for universal health care plan, which she called the “unfinished business of our country.”

Clinton drew distinctions between her plan and Barack Obama’s, but shied away from overly critical rhetoric.

“You have to have a seamless healthcare system which covers every single person,” she told a few dozen people at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. “My plan does, my opponents plan doesn’t. There are 600,000 uninsured Oregonians. Under my plan everyone would have insurance. Under his plan at least 220,000 would still be left uninsured. This is a big difference in this campaign. And really it’s not a difference of politics so much as commitment.”

Clinton was introduced by Jordan Kokich, who 14 years ago met with the then-first lady through the Make A Wish Foundation, and now works as an organizer for her campaign in Oregon. She and others talked about their experiences in the health care system and why they felt a universal plan was needed. Clinton argued that setting a goal short of fully universal coverage would make the effort less likely to succeed.

“We need a president who understands how tough this is going to be,” she said. “[Insurance companies] are not going to give up without the fight of our lives, because there’s too much money in it. Let’s be honest here. … I believe the time is ripe, but you don’t get there by setting a goal less than universal health care. You set the goal of universal health care, then you work to achieve it. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.”

As she works to sure support for her continuing in the race, the Clinton campaign issued a release saying that the fight for universal health care is the “driving force” behind her bid.

“One of the reasons I wanted to run for president was finish the work I started in ’93 and ’94, and to build on the work I was able to do in  ’97 and ’98 to help create the children’s health insurance program,” she said here. “I want to fix our health care system. That is why I’m running for president. And that is one reason why I hope voters in Oregon will support me.”

Consider this, please. How will Hillary's insulting characiture of the good people of West Virginia, fall on their ears? Just how will it play out?

How many of them will her words offend? Will it deflate some of them so that they lose interest in voting on Tuesday? Will she actually drive some to Obama? As ever with Hillary, there is going to be some negative blowback against her in the polls. If nothing else, we have seen through this primary how for her, at this time in her life, she is under Divine Judgment. What goes around, comes around on her so fast, that the rest of us barely have time to run, and take cover before the lightning strikes!
Hillary's been holding her rallies, in W. Va., on people's front porches, because she can't afford anything else.

The W.Va. vendors won't give her credit!

She's taken to packing her lunch with surplus peanut butter, and sugar sandwiches. She can't afford jelly, and suger goes farther.

She's been sighted with a tupperware cup, full of tap water, that she hides under her pantsuit, which she fills with people's water hoses when she get thirsty stumping in their yard.

Maybe not, but you are a losing violet.
I'm thinking that Washington Governor Chris Gregoire (female) would be a good VP match for Obama.
There is one thoroughbred filly and one nag in the race.  I'll take the thoroughbred over the untested, uncapable, unqualified, overly driven by the media candidate that is Obama.

Obama must not be president.
What a laugh that Hillary "Republican" Clinton wants to finish her unfinished work on universal health care that she abandoned almost 15 years ago.  She abandoned true universal health care for the medical insurance lobby's dream of mandatory health insurance just so they can rip all of us off.  She was a quitter back then and all this false hype about her being a fighter is just self serving campaign propaganda.

Go Obama 08/12!
chuch    Hillary has it wrong she is not a fighter, but a divider. Anything to win even if it destroys the party. dc
She has dismissed so many states as not important that it is hard to take her seriously when she claims that Kentucky & West Virginia are so important. It's over Hillary. Move on.
Hillary "Republican" Clinton is now just a "Shrieking Violet" trying to shout her way into fooling everyone she is so electable.  The fact is that she is not more electable than the presumtive nominee Barack Obama because she is the one who has lost the most races, lost the most p[opular votes and most importantly lost most of the delegates.

Go Obama 08/12!
If you have time , you should read Bob Herbert's column in the New York Times. It talks about the Clinton's exit from the White House,  pardons for the Rodham brother's clients, furniture that she and Bill took from the White House. They had to return it. While she may not be a shrinking violet she is a lot of other things
Math is not her strong point, but elections in primaries do not translate to wins in the General Election
Please tell her next time you see her. Also tell Mr. Ickes that if there is an October Surprise, it will be for the White Vote lady ( Bob Herbert's column is just a start ) but hopefully that will never happen.
Every state, Hillary campaigns in, is told it's the most important state.  The BS rolls so easily from her tongue.
She has lost, and yet she persists on this divisive tone. Why can't she get it through her thick skull that she has no chance? She should be attacking McCain.
SD's, end this sideshow.
Hey, Hillary, where was your commitment to health care reform from 1993 when your first plan failed largely your own fault until this year?
How about telling us what kind of meeting this was, before telling us that people were complaining that Obama was missing.  Was this a Clinton rally? A Kentucky Democratic Party meeting?  Was Obama supposed to be there?  Do you have a clue?

Often it helps to read your own stuff before you push that "submit" button.
HRC wants to finish work she started in '93-'94-'97-'98. What has she been doing for the last 10 plus years?

Bob, Chicago
"I'm no shrinking violet".

-Hillary

The code words here are 'I'm', 'no','shrink', and 'violet'.

Hillary, and Bill, preplanned for her possible need of a code blue type rescue, before she announced her bid to seek the Presidency, should the dreaded can of whoop pants be opended up on her. He would then know to come, and shut her down. Here's the breakdown:

-I'm = I'm way out of control, and can't stop myself

-no =  no closer to the nomination than Tonya ever
      was to the gold medal

-shrink = Shrink! I've totally lost it, Get my Shrink!

-violet = (Encrypted word for 'violence'), as in,

'on the verge of doing' !

Someone tell the Gimmick Candidate Carl Rove is on the phone, he has something to tell her.

From what I heard, the GOP dumped Hillary after Tuesday. They thanked her for her hard work and how she followed their every instruction but they declined her membership application to the GOP party, they called her a JUDAS

Hillary Clinton, The Gimmick candidate
Bill and Hillary, The Gimmick Family
Do and Say Anything "08
I am an Obama supporter, but I think that he is making a huge miscalculation in giving the appearance of " ignoring" West Virginia and Kentucky. Even though he is expected to lose those states handily, he should have campaigned there to minimize Clinton's margin of victory; to show that he is makiing progress in winning over those voters. I heard that she is up by staggering numbers, such as 30 to 40%. She will no doubt use this to augment her argument that " working calss white voters" do not connect with Obama. Ergo, he cannot win in November." My God, she WILL overtake him in the popular vote if those numbers hold up and she gets the expected one million votes in Puerto Rico. Obama cannot afford to let down his guard against this woman . I think that her strategy is to tout the popular vote , especially if she pulls ahead,( plus, that would give her more leverage to try to negotiate the seating of Florida and Michigan to her liking) and sadly, I suspect that the Clintons are working behind the scenes to make sure that  "something happens" before Oregon. Perhaps, another Wright encore? This woman has NOT given up and Obama had better realize that! The superdelegates are very wrong to believe that she will "play nice" and not try to further rough him up by staying in the race.
Why is she still saying she is the best???

She needs to take a seat. NO VP slot for you witchy poo
HRC: 'I AM NO SHRINKING VIOLET'

Oh, how well we know your size, and hue Hillary! We are not delusional.

MSNBC HEADLINE: "CLINTON: PLAYING THE RACE CARD?"

.........................................................................
Comment:

HILLARY HAS RUN A BLATANTLY RACIST CAMPAIGN.   HILLARY & BILL HAVE TRIED TO USE THE 'RACE CARD' AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

IF JOHN McCAIN MADE SUCH RACIAL ARGUMENTS AS HAVE THE CLINTONS --- BLACK LEADERS WOULD BE OUTRAGED --- THEY WOULD BE SCREAMING & HOLLERING ON EVERY RADIO & TV TALK SHOW DENOUNCING SUCH BLATANTLY RACIAL POLITICS.   BUT SINCE IT IS THE HILLARY CAMPAIGN PLAYING THE RACE CARD, ONLY A FEW BLACK LEADERS ARE SPEAKING OUT IN PROTEST & CONDEMNATION.

WHY IS DEMOCRATIC "RACE BAITING" OK?

I would just like to comment that in my opinion it is a very BIG mistake to be assuming at this point that Obama is in fact the presumptive nominee.  Yes, I know the math is hard for Hillary at this point, next to even impossible.  But, I think it is wrong to count her out.  If there is a way to pull this off, she will do it in anyway possible.  Never underestimate your opponent, we are talking about a Clinton here!  I am  a strong Obama supporter, and want him to pull this off, but it is NOT yet over, not until he reaches that  magic number.
She IS no shrinking violet. She is more like that stubborn dandelion that you can't get rid of in the front yard!
Yes yes hillary we KNOW your not a shrinking violet.
If you were you wouldn't be running for President.

I must say I get a kick out of the "electability" argument coming from HRC's mouth.
Can someone please tell me how she is more electable
as the runner up in this campaign than the winner?
How is she more electable running an old-style campaign? How is she more electable relying on an old coalition that just doesn't have the numbers?
How is she more electable than Barack Obama?
How is she more electable with negatives >50%. Half of which are people in her own party?
People have embraced Obama as a breath of fresh air in this campaign. They have also embraced him for the simple reason that he is not Hillary Clinton.
That's why he got my vote on Super Tuesday. That's why I'll vote for him in November.

Hillary says she has "a broader base of support" than Senator Obama.
She must be talking about her posterior, and ,thunder thighs because it isn't showing up in the popular vote tallies.
Before anyone accuses me of being a misogynist woman hater.  Let me point out that I'm all for a Woman President just not THIS WOMAN.

HILLARY - IT'S OVER.  YOU LOST.
I just have to go on about the Super delegates again.  I get it that some of them are representing areas that may or may not prefer Clinton.  But, the point is...it's not going to be Clinton.  If they would act like leaders and tout Obama, a lot of their constituents would follow their lead.  And then there are those who are no longer holding public positions.  There is no reason for them not to come forward and endorse Obama.  I guess they are afraid that poor, uneducated, white people won't vote for him. So they've also become victims of Hillary's scare tactics. (that is a scare tactic, is it not?)
The answer,  Democratic leaders, is to rally around our Candidate and show that they just aren't buying that crap.  Get a little pumped up and lets have a show of force.  If you're convinced that Obama is our new leader...that feeling and belief will be catchy.
Please hear my plea and the pleas of other democratic members.  Get it together!
Senator Obama stands for the general welfare of all of us, but especially the hard-working middle class.  Senator Obama is the only candidate who is offering us the chance to change Washington so that it again works for our long-term general welfare, instead of the short-term profit interests of some big business.

How do I know this?  This has consistently been his message from the beginning of this campaign AND Senator Obama takes no money from federally registered lobbyists or special interests PACS, while all of the other candidates do.  Senator Obama's campaign is funded by us -- so he is accountable to us.  Enough said.
I'm a hardworking white person.  I guess I am supposed to support Clinton.  I don't.  Her supporters are willing to ignore the corrupt behavior of Monica's boyfriend and his wife.  Hillary supporters are like Stepford Wives, blindly devoted to the Clintons, no matter what.  Obama is my choice.  He is far from perfect, but he looks very good in comparison to the terrorist pardoners.  Hillary wants back in the White House so she can steal some more furniture.  Looks like it ain't gonna happen!

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Senator Obama, please pick a female running mate, but not Hillary.  The first female on a winning presidential ticket should be a person with integrity.  That disqualifies Hillary Clinton.
What makes me crazy is that all the pundits and media are saying that the super delegates should not overturn the will of the voters.

I may be wrong, but based on the large blue states that she has won - if all the elected house members voted as their district did, and senators voted as their state did, and non-elected supers voted as their state did - she would be ahead in supers - enough to win the nomination. No one in the media is doing that math…to afraid to go there???

Hillary should run as an independant.....
There's a reason WV and Kentucky are among the last states to vote--our next president should NOT be chosen by a small group of old, uneducated white voters. It is making me really mad that this voting bloc has suddenly risen to the be-all and end-all of the Democratic Party, thanks to Hillary.

What about the rest of us elitist, egghead, white, wealthy, young and African-American voters who are Democrats and voting for Obama?
