HRC: WV a 'crucial turning point'

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
LOGAN, W.V. -- With the clock ticking, Hillary Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd here that tomorrow’s primary could be a “crucial turning point” in the presidential election, as she continued to play up the state’s significance for Democrats’ chances in the fall.

“West Virginia is a real indicator of which way the political winds are going to blow come the November election,” Clinton said. “This election we’ve had, this primary contest has been close and exciting -- the closest one anybody can remember. But the goal is to nominate someone who can beat John McCain in November. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

As proof of her claim, she repeated the statistic that no Democrat has won the White House without West Virginia since 1916.

“If West Virginia had voted for our Democratic nominee in 2000 and 2004, we wouldn't have had to put up with George Bush for the last seven and a half years,” she said. “I am going to work as hard as I can between now and the time the polls close tomorrow, because I want to earn your support.”

In emphasizing the role of a state where she’s heavily favored, Clinton is sending the message that her rival is not as sure of a bet in November. But her comments otherwise offered little in the way of contrasts with Obama beyond two areas -- her plan for a gas tax holiday, and her readiness on “Day one.”

“I don’t need a guided tour of the White House,” she said. “I know my way around, and I know we gotta get to work immediately, because we’re not gonna have a lot of time.”

Clinton also emphasized the economy in an area “where people understand what hard work means,” she said. She claimed President Bush’s policy was simply “trickle-down economics,” and that most people “feel like they’ve been trickled on for seven years and didn’t get much of it.”

And as her campaign has disclosed significant debt, she worked into her remarks some stories about how even people of limited means have been scraping together money to support her campaign.

“As I was coming here … shaking hands, a man handed me a check and said. ‘You keep fighting, this will help,’” she said. “And I know that if I have your help tomorrow, we will send a very clear message.”

"To me, there's no doubt, there's a movie to be made on this campaign, and made even objectively, Hillary would be the villain and Obama would be the hero."

That's a quote from an interview with Rod Lurie, director of The Contender and Commander in Chief, two of the most important films about women in presidential politics. The interview just went live at Film.com

I am a native West Virginian who was educated there then left the state to find a better life.  I suffered through innumerable jokes and insults over the years but was always proud of my state.  It certainly sickens me how the news media is covering Hillary Clinton like she really knows and cares about what is going on in WV--"hard work"--she has no idea.  I understand fully what will defeat Obama in West Virginia, and it was a part of the "better life" I was looking for--a life where people are judged by their merits and not color, religion, etc.  I genuinely feel Barack is the one who is more apt to remember these West Virginians in the long run.
Man, she's just a caricature of herself now, isn't she?  She's just making stuff up.  West Virginia is now a bellweather?  Democrats don't win without West Virginia?  Since when?  Rachel Maddow was quite correct in referring to Hillary as being "post rational", which is a very nice way of saying insane.
Yes and Bill know's his way around the white house to...Remember that Hillary...
She needs to keep the campaign going so she can continue asking for money to pay off her debt!
The Clintons will go to any lengths to win-even using racialism. Bill Clinton minimized Obama's victory in South Carolina by saying " Of course Jesse Jackson won here in 1984 ". He minimized the support from whites and other non-white groups. Hillary Clinton said after she lost Louisiana " Of course there are alot of proud black people in that state ". Now we have Sen. Clinton equating hard working blue collar people with white working people. She does not acknowledge that blue collar workers come in all colors. Some have voted for her. Some have voted for Obama. Had she and her husband not resorted to using racialism they may have kept more of their African-American support. My mother is 79 years old , a long time Clinton supporter. She now says that she could not raise her hand to pull the lever for Hillary. The Clintons' behavior reminds her of what she grew up with in North Carolina.
Give that man back his money Hillary!! The only thing that check will help is for more doughnuts and coffee. 20 million in debt, it's obvious the lady doesn't manage money very well.
She is talking to the wind....the change has come...accept the defeat....unite the desm
I thought Ohio was... oh wait, wasn't Pennsylvania?... or Indiana? No, I must be confused, it was West Virginia all along.
Obama is reconfiguring the electoral map.  What was true about "crucial" states no longer is.  Clinton is talking, but most of us have quit listening because we're already focusing on the general election.
So much for a graceful exit...
“If West Virginia had voted for our Democratic nominee in 2000 and 2004, we wouldn't have had to put up with George Bush for the last seven and a half years,”

ummm... WV has 5 electoral votes. A flip would have netted Kerry 10, still leaving him well short of 270. Gore would have still been 5 EVs short with a WV flip. Fuzzy math...
And didn't the Democratic nominee lose each time, too?
Ah, shoot. I was using current EV numbers, not the 2000 numbers. So it would have helped Gore, but not Kerry.
yawn, yawn yawn. we heard that before. this is not an entitlement.Get out and be graceful. americans are not that stupid. a state that favour you becomes the turning point and the rest 30 something states that u lost aint no longer matter. besides i forgot wv is a big state LOL> go home take a cup of coffee and accept that this was just not your time. besides Greed is not a good factor it reeks of desperation and ambition is not bad in itself but when u start to grasp at straws then am sure you need to take a hard look at the mirror and talk the truth to your self. quitting while u are ahead is way better than quitting without  merit. cheers and lets all work around the nominee . its his time and you cant change what has been ordained by the Almighty.
didn't she say last week that NC will be a "game changer"???
HILLARY MUST BE KIDDING WHAT WORLD IS SHE IN. GIVE ME A BRAKE! MY GOD THIS WOMAN IS A BORN LIAR AND HER PEOPLE NEED TO BE HONEST WITH HER SHE IS IN 20 MILLION IN DEBT.
Hillary and the press have to remember that the last time a Democrat won the White House without Missouri was in 1824, that's right--EIGHTEEN. Who won Missouri? Barack Obama.

We love you Hillary.

Please continue to fight for us.
You will fix our broken economy and health care system. Thank you
Come on MSNBC... is it really necessary to beat this dead horse? No matter what happens, the RED NECKS in West Virginia won't change the outcome of this nomination race... Who cares what West Virginia thinks at this late point in the race because they don't have enough delegates to even matter.
Hillary continues to misrepresent the truth in emphasizing the role of the state. Each State she appeals to becomes the "real indicator"  Please....
turning point for what its over all except hillary game to get money from people to help pay her 20 million dollar waste  if she and bill had 109 million in 8 years then why need everys 5+10S time get on with ge mccain or obama either better than more same clinton bush no differnce
She's gotten to the point of just being pathetic now. Pandering to West Virginia as being "the key" to the race. I thought she said something similar in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, etc. She's a complete phony whose only real ability is to pursue her own selfish ambition. Her and Bill make the pefect couple.
What message does she think she'll be sending tomorrow? Since when does losing every metric to a rookie make her a better candidate? The only thing she seems good at fighting lately is the inevitability of math.
If Clinton acquires the Presidency, we may as well begin calling it "The Spin House". This has been the tenth pivotal situation. Why will we need a lot of time to correct issues?

Moreover, managerial experts don't complain about time. They use it wisely. What happened after Super Tuesday? Poor planning i.e. poor use of time.

Being led by the ignorant is depressing.

Clinton=out of touch
McCain= more out of touch
Obama=the tip of the change iceberg

BTW, Africans did work for Whites in America for 300 years for without compensation or civil rights. Are they not hard working and blue collar as well?
The $109 Million Dollar Former First Lady taking money from the poor.  Think about it.
