Hagee apologizes to Catholics in letter

From NBC's Bethany Thomas and Domenico Montanaro
Controversial McCain endorser Pastor John Hagee, who has come under fire for comments he’s made about victims of Katrina as well as the Catholic Church, today apologized to the Catholic Church with "deep regret."

Hagee sent this letter to the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue, a controversial figure himself, apologizing to the Catholic Church for insinuating the Catholic Church was or had been anti-Semitic and referring to it as the “great whore.”

He says, “I am writing in a spirit of mutual respect and reconciliation to clarify my views.

“Out of a desire to advance greater unity among Catholics and Evangelicals in promoting the common good, I want to express deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful. After engaging in constructive dialogue with Catholic friends and leaders, I now have an improved understanding of the Catholic Church, its relation to the Jewish faith, and the history of anti-Catholicism.”

He goes on to say that his comments were, in part, out of "...my zeal to oppose anti-Semitism and bigotry in all its ugly forms.... In the process, I may have contributed to the mistaken impression that the anti-Jewish violence of the Crusades and the Inquisition defines the Catholic Church. It most certainly does not."

He goes on to note that "there were thousands of righteous Catholic - both clergy and laymen -- who risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust," including Pope Pius XII.

In reference to his "great whore" comment, he writes, "...I better understand that reference to the Roman Catholic Church as the 'apostate church' and the 'great whore' described in the Book of Revelation is a rhetorical device long employed in anti-Catholic literature and commentary."

He adds later, in his defense, that his ministry has done some pro-Catholic works, like buying the property where the home of the Ursuline Sisters of San Antonio was for his ministry's school when the sisters "were on the verge of losing their home ... and allowed them to continue living in their home free of charge for twelve years."

He makes this closing appeal, "It is this sense of Christian fellowship I hope to reestablish with Catholics with whom I and all Evangelicals must unite to be a voice for life, the family, marriage, and Christian values to our nation and the world."

*** UPDATE *** The Democratic National Committee responds and is unimpressed with how McCain has dealt with Hagee.

"Reverend John Hagee today apologized for his offensive comments about Catholics. Despite spending a year courting Hagee's endorsement and refusing to distance himself from the controversial pastor, John McCain reportedly played no role in the apology. McCain has repeatedly refused to publicly denounce Hagee's discriminatory comments about women, African-Americans, America Muslims or LGBT Americans or renounce Hagee's endorsement."

DNC Communications Director Karen Finney writes, "Now that Reverend Hagee is apologizing for his anti-Catholic comments, does John McCain think that Hagee should also apologize for his other comments? If so will he have the courage to say so publicly? Unless John McCain's idea of being a new kind of Republican includes cozying up to radicals who compare women to dogs, hold racially insensitive fundraisers and call one of the worst natural disasters in our country's history God's punishment, he should renounce John Hagee's endorsement immediately. Given John McCain's history of putting political calculations ahead of his principles, we're not holding our breath."

This is not an apology.  This is a psuedo-apology.

"I want to express deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful."

I'm sorry that YOU found me offensive.  Blech.

GOOD JOB MCCAIN!!! GREAT POLITICS....TWO YEARS TO LATE, LONG OVER DUE!!!!
Two Words.

DOUBLE STANDARD.
I think he did a good job. I am a Democrat who supports Obama but am glad that the man stepped up to the plate.
McCain with the nudge...
And the victims of Katrina - where is their apology Pastor Hagee?
It is time to RECLAIM the Bible from the Right.

As a Christian, it is important to recognize that these hateful, intolerant comments and "leaders" are not in-line with the teachings of Jesus - and they do not speak for all Christians.  Instead of loving one another as Jesus taught us, they spew acid from their tongues.

Hagee, Parsley, Pat Robertson, and Ann Coulter are wolves in sheeps clothing!  They are false prophets!
does anyone buy this? REALLY?
Too little, too late!  And anyway, how about apologizing to the gay community about your outrageous comments blaming Katrina and like natural disasters on God's wrath against the gays.  Hagee is still a troubled evangelical, and McCain's continued acceptance of his endorsement, which he is honoted to have, makes McCain as bad as Hagee...an anti catholic, homophobic, anti semite!
Can't wait to hear Pat Bukkkanen's take on this--as obsessed as he is w/the Wright "controversy." He does seem a little bummed lately now that McCain doesn't get to run against HRC.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Out of desperation for the Republican party.  The GOP forced Haggee to wright this or he wouldn't get any more of their money.

The sad part is, I use to be a republican but Bush ruined that F O R E V E R.
This must be a sign from God that the Dem primary is ending and the spotlight will be on him and McSame. Seems like he's doing a little pre-emptive fence mending. If this will be the only fence for McSame to hurdle life would be grand for the Republicans.

However, most of us who have suffered through the past seven and half years will not be swayed by any Republican tactics....Not this time, so clean out your closets some more Sen. McSame and let the games begin.  You have no idea how much support Sen. Obama has, we are strong...very strong.
John Hagee and Rod Parsley are FALSE PROPHETS!
THIS IS WHERE YOU MEDIA TYPES STEP IN

This is where the DEMS are hurt by not being solidly behind their nominee and focused on the General Election.

The DNC should be blasting this attempt by Catholic leaders to whitewash the Hagee smears and the lack of a full repudiation of Hagee by McCain.

I will count on the media, including you FIRST READ, to conduct the same vigil on Hagee that was conducted on Wright.

We know that Hagee still holds these views and this letter is a political coverup.

The underlying issue remains to create a fantastic story if the media wants to pursue it: what are Hagee's true feelings towards Catholics? Have they changed at all? And why won't McCain repudiate Hagee and reject his endorsement?

Inquiring minds want to know.

And any sense of fairness and decency will compell the Mainstream media (less FOX News of course) to hound McCain and Hagee non-stop for the answers.
Bill Donohue...he apologized to Bill Donohue.

If you're going to apologize for calling the Catholic Church "The Great Whore" wouldn't if be better for your letter to be addressed to, oh, I don't know, maybe Cardinal Bernard Law or maybe all the way to the top by addressing it to Pope Benedict?

But you instead choose Bill Donohue...a wacko in his own right.

Whatever.
this is all POLITICS- Hagee has in no way changed his beliefs.

The RNC knew this could be a problem for McCain in the general and they applied the right kind of pressure to get the desired response.

Now, when they bring up Wright in the general- they have the 'yeah, but Hagee apologized and had a change of heart' excuse

Pure politics- and- Pure BS

-I wonder if after Nov. will his change of heart reverse?
John Hagee's hateful and intolerant views are not Christian "values"!
To all of you Whores um Catholics I am trully sorry for this week.
Of course, the media won't play any of the MANY clips of Hagee or any of the other famous Republican pastors and all their absurd, tyrannical remarks.
BTW- Good Response DNC
Maybe the DNC should stay out of this one.  I can already see the McCain campaign's reaction,  "Maybe the DNC should instruct Senator Obama to demand apologies from Reverend Wright regarding his inflammatory comments to white Americans or his insensitive discussion of the worst attack on American soil, etc., etc."  You know what they say, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."  Unless they want the Wright circus again, they should have just left it alone
McCain will apologize as soon as Obama apologizes for attending Wright's church for 20 years.

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves!"

Matthew 7:15
Maybe the DNC should stay out of this one.  I can already see the McCain campaign's reaction,  "Maybe the DNC should instruct Senator Obama to demand apologies from Reverend Wright regarding his inflammatory comments to white Americans or his insensitive discussion of the worst attack on American soil, etc., etc."  You know what they say, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."  Unless they want the Wright circus again, they should have just left it alone
He apologized for his Hurricane Katrina remarks too . Then a week later he took back his apology. I trully have a hard time seeing godd move through a man like this. Just like the Great Jimmy Swaggartand Jimmy Baker, This man is making a mockery of God.
Rev. Hagee don't you think you should apologize to the people of Louisiana for saying that Katrina happened because of a "GAY" march.  Vengeance is mine saith the Lord.  Hagee....you better watch out for bolts of lightning.  We are all GOD's children.
Maybe McCain doesn't give a crap because he understands that someone unrelated to him doesn't speak for him.

I was irritated that the Wright issue got to be what it was, and it irritates me that this is blowing up too. As far as Obama/Wright goes, we ALL have that crazy uncle or weirdo buddy who says and does some really weird crap, but sometimes you just have to observe good old fashioned respect. Obama, I don't like you. But I empathize, and I give you a pat on the back.

And as far as McCain/Hagee, I'd just shut up and move on if I were McCain too. If some guy started spewing a bunch of crap but then quietly stood in the background, let him stand there. Smart move. The last thing McCain needs to do is give Hagee a reason to get on the airwaves all pissed off. As we've seen from Obama's unfortunate happenings.

I wish we could just have candidates submit resumes, submit voting records, submit financial records, submit written platforms (preferably bulleted to save me some time and let us vote. I wish the RNC and DNC and the media and all of the candidates' stupid buddies would just shut up. Too bad wishes don't come true in politics.
We must reclaim the Bible!  The fundamentalist Christians have twisted Scripture to justify their hate and intolerance.  The Word teaches us to be loving and accepting; to show mercy and humility.

I want to know if LIFE is so sacred that the unborn must be protected, why do Huckabee and George W. Bush support capital punishment?

Wow. So we should forgive him as easily as we "forgave" Wright, right?

Let's see if there's going to be a public lynching as they tried to do for OBAMA'S political career.

This is OBVIOUSLY a political ploy to save McCain. But what disgusts me most is the fact that the MSM took great pains to ignore his statements and in large part, white america has ignored this as well.

The great white double standards in the nation are completely unfortunate and utterly ridiculous.
Oh please democrat party. You act like you approach things from some moral high ground. Go spread some more hate of those who might have more, and contempt for those who have less. We've really enjoyed watching your sexist racist vs: the racist sexist battle this past year.
The old man will not be getting a pass in the GE. The old man and the rest of the Neocons need to learn to take it like they can dish it out. I'm sure they are going to be whining about the attack ads in the GE. Hypocritical F@#$%s!
The Rev Wright responds and is unimpressed with how Sen. Obama has dealt with the Wright controversy.
After they way the RNC and the media equally flaunted Rev. Wright all over the world stage I bet this won't half the scrutiny and repudiation it deserves. What a bunch of hypocrites.
Why do preachers on the right get to say whatever they want all day and all night with no reprecussions. The GOP candidates were practically falling over each other to get Pat Robertson's endorsement and he is so hateful. Whatever happened to God is love?
I hope the DNC and Obama start hitting harder on McCains Crap.  He has this rep as a Maverick, but when you look at his voting record he votes party lines almost always.  Talks the Maverick Talk but Walks a different walk.  The straight talk express has officially lost its bearings.

Obama 08/12
"My name is John Hagee and I am a Congenital Liar." Hi John! says the crowd. I have now gone 2 minutes without lying. (by the way, I love to lie). Boy have I convinced that crazy wacko Bill Donahue that I was just kidding about that whore thing......

Oh, David Vitter (my dear friend) loves whores!

My newest and bestest friend Johnny Mac just loves me!

Man are you guys fools!
Yeah, where are the video clips of Hagee tyrants to run 24/7 round the clock? Fair is fair.
I can tell you that Hagee is only trying to apease McCain and his kronies. He DOES view the Catholic Church the way he described it in his earlier comments and has held that position for YEARS. He is as big a bigot in his own regard as any of those opposed to MLK or any other minority.

Save your breath Hagee. You are mimmicking Hillary...we know you are lying when your lips are moving!
I accept Reverend Haggee's apology to me.  Now, I want him to stop urging his supporters to start the apocalypse -- doesn't this man realize that his words might have consequences?  Does Reverend Haggee truly want to see more than 2/3 of the world dead?  Once Reverend Haggee stops urging people to cause the apocalypse I might consider him as a sane man.  Until that happens, I cannot imagine WHY Senator McCain would seek this man's endorsement for over one year and why he would continue to accept it.

Also, please MSM do NOT endlessly loop Reverend Haggee's incidendiary comments -- you might help him to gain supporters and his language of destruction is VERY DANGEROUS.
This "apology" is as phoney as it gets. This guy STILL hates Catholics, Jews, Gays, Blacks, Katrina Refugees--basically everyone that doesn't look, worship and act just like him.

Most Catholics will see this for what it is--Republican desparation politics. Republicans only pretend to care about Catholics when the chips are down. They use their famous wedge issue of abortion to cover up the many anti-Catholic positions taken by the Republican Party on unjust wars (Iraq); treatment of immigrants, Social Justice for the Poor, the Death Penalty and a host of other issues. But Catholics are finally seeing through the charade.
The Catholic League is run by a bunch of Republicans anyways. I am surpirsed why the Catholic League didn't come out more often publicly to attack McCain for receiving Hagee's endorsement. This apologe is phony, until the elections are over.
And after the Presidential elections, Hagee will come out again and blast Catholicism! A leopard can never change its spots... everyone knows this is just hogwash and insincere!
Chuck all of you in the media have done us a GRAVE disservice by hounding Barrack for so many weeks about Wright but NO COVERAGE WHATSOEVER about HAGEE or ROBERTSON!!!  This is THE FIRST story you've run about this cretin only AFTER the "apology" thereby giving the GOP a way out in the GE!!  You Bias is Frustrating!  I spent soooo many weeks pleading with you guys during the Wright fiasco to do a story about Hagee and Robertson but no you wanted to pound Obama into the ground " . . . the story that won't go away . . .".  What did I get?  No posting of my comments and to my chagrin NO HAGEE or Robertson stories!  They during the Wright fiasco reiterated their debase views saying far worse things about 911 that Wright ever did but you guys were silent!  Your bias is sickening!!  What is it?  You guys want to go easy on the "War Hero"?  He gets off with gaffes like leaves on the wind meanwhile you guys parse every single word that comes out of Barrack, Hillary or Bill's mouth!!??? Good response DNC!  Don't let this die!  Keep hammering him on it!  I'm so tired of the double standard, kid gloves and the hypocrisy!!  GO DNC!!!
What a half-hearted apology...so he doesn't think the Catholic Church is the "great whore" now but thinks it will become the "great whore" in the after-life.

That being said, I really could care less about the views of a candidate's pastor - the candidate, not the pastor, is the one on the ballot.
Today on the news was an article about Einstien, and some letters that he wrote going up for auction. The letters are about his belief in religion. In the note, written the year before his death, Einstein dismissed the idea of God as the product of human weakness and the Bible as "pretty childish."
Couldn't agree more, so these flare ups about someone pastor, be it Obama's or McCan'ts, are really a waste of time, paper, ink and effort. Lets move on already and let the religous nuts destroy each other because that is what they do best.
McCain and the Republicans are trying to avoid a Jeremiah Wright-style event in the fall with this.  I mean, why else would Hagee have done this??

But it won't work.  If the Republicans try to pull the Wright issue out again in the fall, the Democrats will hit back with this - and hit hard.  If you read Hagee's stuff, his positions are just as offensive as Wrights.
Donahue is NOT a representative of the Catholic Church so its ridiculous that Hagee apologized to him.  In reality, they're both right-wing tools, Donahue just happens to proclaim himself a spokesman for Catholics.  Perhaps when he actually apologizes for the remarks instead of the reaction to the remarks, an open letter to Catholics or a letter to the U.S. Conference of Bishops may be more appropriate.
Double standard indeed.Obama was "hammered" because of what somebody else said and John Mccain gets a free ride.I'm starting to wonder if america is truly a country of forward thinking people who can except a women or african american as they're next president?John Mccain will do nothing more then continue the geogre bush policies of war.
The Hagee issue has been out there for a while!  Why has no one picked it up and run with it like Rev. Wright??? The words from Rev. Hagee are just as "damning" as those from Wright!  I am a 51 year old African American, registered Independent voter who is now supporting Obama.  Why is this not news?  Why is there no film clips of Hagee's sermons?  Why is no one questioning McCain about his supporter?  Just goes to show who's really in charge of the media and this country...Maybe old, crazy Rev. Wright is on to something!  The American media is fair and balanced in it's reporting.....LMAO!
And another thing...
Is it just me...or are all of these radical ministers (I USE THE TERM LOOSELY)...RELIGIOUS NUT JOBS just using a racially charged primary season to vent their denominationally held, and toxic I might add, views of what a perfect society ought to be?

We really ought to be scared if it is these people who are shaping the moral compass of our youth.
