GOPers stomping mad over prospects

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Lots of very glum faces among House GOP members this morning as they emerged from their weekly closed-door session. The political situation is not good, and they aren't even trying to deny it.

Rep. Tom Davis stomped on the concrete floor of the Capitol basement when asked by reporters about Republican fortunes at the moment.

"This is the floor," he said, by way of explanation. "We're below the floor."

Inside the meeting, Davis had just presented his colleagues with what he said was a 20-page memo outlining his prescription for a way out of this mess. He did not offer details to the press, yet did not spare the party and the president scathing criticism in his public comments.

"The president swallows the microphone every time he opens his mouth," Davis said.

He believes Bush's staunch opposition to the Democratic housing bill and the SCHIP bill, for example, is hurting rank and file. Look at yesterday's vote on the SPRO, where Republicans defied the president in droves. Lo and behold, the White House says today that it will not veto the bill.

Today is also the day when the House takes up the farm bill, which the president has promised to veto. It’s expected that this will become the second veto of Bush's administration to be overridden -- though the farm bill has more of a parochial dynamic than the national political one.

Asked if he thought there should be a change in House GOP leadership, he brought up the 2006 election and the loss of Congress, then wondered aloud why, when "the plane is being flown into the mountain," there has been no change in direction.

A major target of internal GOP criticism is Rep. Tom Cole, who runs the House campaign arm of the party. He emerged to tell reporters that there is "concern" within the party, yes, but, looking for a silver lining, he pointed out that John McCain is running far ahead of the generic GOP approval rating. He then spoke of the need to "re-brand" the party in the likeness of McCain, which may be a tall order, since many rank-and-file conservatives have reviled McCain for years for his transgressions against party orthodoxy.

The parlance of marketing has, of course, overrun the business of politics (and news media), and here again Cole spoke of the unpopularity of the GOP "brand." He says, as does House GOP No. 2 Roy Blunt, that the Democratic candidate yesterday in Mississippi, Travis Childers, is pro life and pro gun.

"Both candidates ran for what Republicans are for," Blunt pointed out. That leaves open the question of why the Democrat won the race. The "brand" is the most common explanation.

House GOP leaders huddle at 11 a.m. today. That will be watched closely for any possibility of a coup or insurrection against leadership in the wake of this third consecutive loss of a GOP seat.

What's the problem?

RINOs like Tom Davis are the problem.  Fools like Tom Davis, who think that the key to Republican success is for them to act like Democrats, are the problem.  The sooner that idiot leaves, the better.
The natives are growing restless.

"The president swallows the microphone every time he opens his mouth," Davis said.

OUCH!  That's gotta hurt!
Conservatives are not merely conservatives.  They're dinosaurs.
Yes, the GOP should re-make itself in John McCain image.  Time to update and abandon failed ideas.
Well, if the Republicans stuck to the "Original" tenants Rebuplicanism (small govt, non-interference in peoples private affairs, fiscal responibility, etc), they would not find themselves in this mess...
20 pages solution??? I'll give the GOP the nutshell solution.  This is a Democracy.  Those with the most votes have power.  You get the most votes by either persuading voters your positions are right, or by adopting positions that the voters believe are right.

The GOP can no longer persuade, as Bush has shown what happens when their policies are actually implemented.  The GOP needs policy positions that majorities of Americans agree with.  Until then, they'll keep going down.
America is waking up to what Republican Family Values really are:
Apathy, Callousness, Greed, Self Serving Self Interest,
Narcissism, Inhumanity, Death, Looting, Plundering.
"...he brought up the 2006 election and the loss of Congress, then wondered aloud why, when "the plane is being flown into the mountain," there has been no change in direction."

So, I guess they are finally realizing what most of the rest of the nation has been saying for a while now...

Bit late though. It's risky to change the way you do business the day before things go before the review board. We'll see if they can pull it off before the general...
If you put bells and whistles on a pile of dung, it's still a pile of dung!  Try doing what the people (your bosses) hired you to do!  Take care of THEM and tell K Street to take a long walk off a short pier!
The GOP will say it's because they're not conservative enough to hang onto the true believers. Back in the real world it's because the GOP message is that what worked in 1908 for the country will work in 2008. Finally enough Americans are waking up to the fact that this just isn't true.
Hmmmm, maybe they should admit their numerous mistakes and present a plan to do better. That might work a little better than "rebranding". But that's just me.
The Party of the Pachyderms is in serious trouble.
This is good news for the Nation.
This is also a reminder of what happens when a Political Party gets drunk on their own hubris.
Maybe it is time to impeach Bush. That would make millions of people very happy.
"Lot's of very glum faces among House GOP members"

GOOD! Now their faces match those of the average American, facing an endless, pointless war and an economy in tatters.  Glad you're finally waking up, GOP, now get ready to pack your shtuff.

Change is coming! Obama '08.
Ha!  you silly guy's had it coming and you simply followed that idiot in the whitehouse down the hole.  As sketchy as Bill Clinton was towards the end of this term, you guy's are making him look like a friggin saint. What did you think would happen?

See you in 4 years when the Dems either fix it or give you another shot at the trough.
The GOP is currently in a situation of their own doing.  Perhaps if they would have listened to the will of the people instead of THEIR "illustrious" failure of a leader, maybe, just maybe, they wouldnt be "below the floor."

These idiots know how to do nothing but pander to special interest groups and dig up dirt on the Clintons, of course people are sick of it.
If you rebrand the party in the likeness of John Mccain you will lose the whole party.  My people have voted Republican since Lincoln.  I refuse to hold my nose and vote for these people.
Republicans plainly are out of touch with America, more than I have ever seen anyone. Leaning towards the rich and using people's fears and hatreds can only last so long. The truth is Americans are good people, so you can appeal to their negative side only for a short time. Hopefully America remembers for a good long time. I think they will, if Obama does a decent job. It will be contrasted against the foolish disaster that is Bush and say 'never again.'
Hmmmm.  I wonder if HRC thinks she can steal red state voters from McCain due to the Repub "brand?"  I wonder if all those red-state, low-information, undereducated, downscale, working-class, cultural values voters (like the ones in WV last night) would consider her real stance on abortion and guns if she were to run against McSame in the fall?  To white working class voters:  you gave us Bush for 8 years.  Please go home and play the Who's "We Won't Get Fooled Again" 89 times on your CD player - if you even own one.
Watch the Republicans start to act like Democrats before November....hey, maybe we'll get out of Iraq sooner than we thought?  I can see it now: McCain standing very alone on the national stage as he urges US presence in Iraq for 100 years.

None of this looks good for the GOP.
Let 'em have the Congress. We'll take a vacation and let the left drive the country down. What have democrats given us since they took control in 2006? We have a weaker dollar, higher gas prices, no legislation on education or health care, the stock market is the only aspect of our economy that isn't a punchline, and mortgage companies are STILL able to offer adjustable rate and no-money-down loans that ignorant people can still sign up for.

And for whoever always say, "vote for jobs, vote for the economy, vote with your head" or whatever it goes, I did. In 2006. What did it give me? How did it change America?

Oh, and I forgot my personal favorite. WE'RE STILL IN IRAQ. I voted for the promise that it would end, and since I voted for a Democrat-led congress, it has approved three spending bills for Bush, one of which financed a SURGE. THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WE WERE PROMISED.
It is possible for HRC, but it's not likely. Math, it is what it is.

As of Wednesday, May 14, 2008

(omitting FL and MI)

There are only 424.5 available delegates (189 of which are elected) remaining to get to 2025

BHO needs 145 or 34.2% of the total remaining delegates
HRC needs 306.5 or 72.2% of the total remaining delegates

IF you count FL (as is) and MI (as proposed)

There are still only 424.5 available delegates remaining to get to 2209

BHO needs 201 or 47.3% of the total remaining delegates
HRC needs 317.5 or 74.8% of the total remaining delegates

IF you count FL (as is) and skip MI

There are still only 424.5 available delegates remaining to get to 2130

BHO needs 181 or 42.6% of the total remaining delegates
HRC needs 307.5 or 72.4% of the total remaining delegates
Oh gosh...The GOP 'brand' is about as popular as Chinese toothpaste these days.  And you guys said Obama was too far 'left' to have coat tails...boy you MSM guys  look funny when Obama proves time and time again he can when told he can not.  The General will prove this to be true as well.  Oh by the way those GOPer's know damn well what's  beneath that floor but not to worry we will be sure to send the ice water.
Insisting and declaiming loudly is no substitute for the truth. Did the GOP really think that the American people were a bunch of idiots? A better and more immediate question is whether the Democrats will make the same mistake. Beyond that, much will depend on whether the American people remain interested in the political process. The GOP overplayed a sorry hand.
HILLARY AND HER SUPPORTERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS ARTICLE AS FACT...

ANYONE CAN BEAT REPUBLICANS THIS YEAR

IT WON'T BE HARD WHEN BUSH'S APPROVAL RATING IS IN THE TANK. AND 3 HOUSE SEATS HAVE SWITHCED TO DEMS

THEREFORE HER SPIN IS BUNK!

OBAMA WILL EASILY WIN AGAINST BUSH'S 3RD TERMER...MCCAIN

LETS GET ON WITH THE GENERAL AND KICK THE REPUBLICANS BEHIND IN THE FALL!!

LORD KNOWS THE REPUBLICANS HAVE KICKED OUR BEHINDS THESE PAST 7 YEARS
The reason you are below the floor is the war with no end.  Failure support troops once they found Osama Bin Laden and an overall disrespect for rank and file Republicans.  If you want to see what your future looks like take a look at the Chicago/Cook County Republican party.  They have over 100 delegate vacancies going into the state convention and will not allow anyone to participate that doesn't support the City or County Chairman.  Here is some advice, change the name of the party to the Nazi party.  You'll get more votes.
re the gop:

"you reap what you sow."
I wonder if Hillary Clinton supporters ever get tired of being wrong.  This is three straight times that a Democrat has won a seat in a heavily Republican district.  It started in my home state of Illinois, when Bill Foster beat Jim Oberweis in Hastert's district.  Obama campaigned for Foster.  Hillary Clinton did not, because she was not asked.  Oberweis made Obama an issue in the campaign, trying to link him to Foster.  Foster won the seat by a large margin.

Now we have the Mississippi race, where another Republican trys to tie Obama to his opponent.  Same result.

Not only will Obama win the nomination, he will also beat McCain in November.  Hillary supporters are trying to use "the rules" to explain why Obama cannot do it.  What they do not seem to understand is this:  Obama is changing the rules.

Obama/Anyone but Hillary Clinton in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.

It doesn't much matter if Democrats gain seats by adopting Republican viewpoints and standards.  That leaves no one to fight for the other 50% of the country who strongly and clearly disagree with their tired old viewpoints and rhetoric!  What is the sense in having two parties if they both represent the same point of view?"
Make sure you tell the whole truth MSNBC. The Democrat that won in Mississippi ran on a gun rights, anti-abortion platform. He merely out-Conservatived the RINO. As the GOP tried for the "big-tent party" which has been a failure the Democrats are falling in the same trap. Most people don't care whether there's a D or R by their name as long as they get the job but what will happen, as with the R's, the D's will run into their leadership roadblocks.
Rasmussen Reports has acknowledged what objective voter already know: Barack Obama will indeed be the Democratic nominee for President in 2008.

Per Rasmussen Reports...

"Rasmussen Reports will soon end our daily tracking of the Democratic race and focus exclusively on the general election competition between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Barring something totally unforeseen, that is the choice American voters will have before them in November. While we have not firmly decided upon a final day for tracking the Democratic race, it is coming soon."
