Obama expects more scrutiny of McCain

Posted: Sunday, May 18, 2008 5:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
GRESHAM, OR -- McCain will be getting his fair share of scrutiny from the press, his potential general-election rival Obama said here today.

During an event with mostly senior citizens, Obama was asked why the presumptive Republican nominee had not had to deal with much media scrutiny on issues like the Keating Five scandal. The voter felt the Illinois senator’s past had gotten all the focus. Obama said he thought part of the reason was that McCain’s candidacy had been written off several months ago, but that he had been able to come back and wrap up the nomination relatively early in the primary season, and that much of the focus had been on the exciting Democratic race.

“I would expect that the press will submit him to the same scrutiny that they are submitting me -- and if they don’t, I’ll have them talk to you because I can tell you would object,” he said. “I think people will lift the hood and kick the tires with John McCain, just like they do with me and just like they’ve done with Sen. Clinton. I think you’re applying for the presidency of the United States of America, then by definition you have given up your privacy and basically I think people are gonna want to know what you’ve done in your life and what you stand for.”

Obama, who was introduced by his wife Michelle, used his opening remarks to talk about fixing Social Security and encouraging Americans to save more money. He called the entitlement program "one of the most successful programs in our history” and said it was the difference between a comfortable retirement and potential poverty. He said the government had an obligation to fix it, and he criticized McCain for his support for a plan to privatize the program.

"We already know what the Republicans will be running on. John McCain has already said that he supports private accounts for Social Security -- in his words, "along the lines that President Bush proposed,” Obama said, adding that he thought privatizing the program was a bad, costly idea. "Sen. McCain’s campaign went even further a few weeks ago, suggesting that the best answer to the growing pressures on Social Security might be to cut cost-of-living adjustments or to raise the retirement age. I think there is another option that is fairer to working men and women. We have to protect Social Security for future generations without pushing the burden on to seniors who have earned the right to retire in dignity.”

Obama proposes adjusting the cap on the payroll tax (so that wealthier people pay more to help seniors) and eliminating income taxes for retirees making less than $50,000 a year, as well as transferable automatic workplace pensions that would allow employers to match employee savings.

McCain camp spokesman Tucker Bounds responded to Obama's hits. "Barack Obama's response to our slowing economy is to raise taxes on job creating investment. His response to high gas prices is to raise taxes on oil. With his lack of experience, it should be no surprise that Barack Obama's response to the problems facing Social Security is to raise Social Security taxes, while making misinformed partisan attacks. His proposal for billions upon billions in tax increases on Social Security is just another example of his weak economic judgment. John McCain has been clear about his belief that we must fix Social Security for future generations and keep our promise to today's retirees, but raising taxes should not be the answer to every problem.”

Obama has a strong lead in Oregon, while Clinton is almost sure to win Kentucky on Tuesday. Although he often says the race is not yet over, most political observers believe the Illinois senator’s lead in pledged delegates is insurmountable. He also leads by every other major metric -- popular vote, states won, and superdelegate endorsers. And Obama expects to be able to declare that he's won a majority of pledged delegates after the Oregon results two days from now. Still, exit polls have consistently shown Clinton outperforming him when it comes to winning over older voters, a group he hopes to make headway with should be become the nominee. This was his second recent trip to an assisted-living community.

The candidate spoke for about 10 minutes and spent some 45 minutes taking questions from a mixture of seniors and younger people on topics including Middle East peace, education, immigration, and the declining dollar. Surprisingly, he was not asked about his health-care plan, usually a major concern for older citizens, until about 30 minutes into the Q&A. He explained his coverage plan in much the same language his rival, Clinton, talks about her own proposal.

He ended by looking ahead to the general election, asking people to pay attention to the differences he lays out between himself and McCain, should he become the nominee. "John McCain wants to continue George Bush’s policies," he said. "I hope that once you take a look where we stand on the issues, that you’ll choose to support me, even if you are a Republican, go ahead choose to support me in this election.

What, more than anything, makes Obama special?

Barack Obama's campaign, his candidacy, is about us, for us, by us. It is time for a presidency that is about us. It is time for a presidency where we are partners and beneficiaries, instead of pawns and victims.

With Barack Obama, we can believe in our future again.
Not much to scrutinize. Obama hasn't done anything is his politcal career. Chicago? Highest crime rate to go along with the highest taxes. Illinois? The state is in shambles, both financially and with corruption. Seeing Obama was Chicago's and Illinois's star pupil, they elected him to the senate, where he has done, nothing. And somehow he constantly talks about the future - when he's done nothing of worth in his past. The man is a total fraud.
Check out the Real John McCain. Compilation of a lot of his contradictory statements. Very revealing.

This is an exciting time. Barak Obama is about to help Americans see the real John McCain. The SnL(Savings and Loan scandal) John McCain. The warmonger, no economic strategy, angerholic John McCain. The flip flopper, I will be whoever I have to be John McCain.
Everyone deserves to make choices based upon honesty. Grandpa has a lot to answer for.

Go Obama!
With Obama we'd be getting the second term of Jimmy Carter or the first term of Mike Dukakis. I guess we could all have malise then.
If Obama doesn't choose Hillary for a running mate, we will not win.
I am so glad Obama is talking about saving Social Security.  You know, I think this is the most troubling issue facing old and young alike. How about taking the money we are using to kill Iraqi children to do something for human beings at home.  Or are we going to dwindle to a second or third world country, with most of us living in tents and cardboard boxes?
McCain has been around for so long and it is BO who needs a scrutiny. He has been voting from the far left of liberals, gun control, anti-abortion, Rev. Wrights 20 years of anti-American radical preaching.

The media pundits have been giving him a free ride. We need to know about his past and him personally.
Can you hear McCain coming down the hall, "flip flop, flip flop, flip flop, flip flop.....Boom, I fell down and I can't get up".
For the older generation (who vote every election) the future is now.  We don't have time to wait for dreams to come true.  Hillary won't make us wait.
Privatization will cost nothing and take the burden off the gov't. Obama wants to give to the seniors, so does McCain. Obama wants to put retirement out of reach of the middle class and overtax the upper class, those who worked harder to get ahead. The harder you work, the more you deserve. You don't work (able bodies), you don't deserve.
Todd Spivak of the Houston Press has documented how Obama accomplished next to nothing in his first six years in the Illinois legislature.------

Then Emil Jones Jr. an African American with thirty years in the legislature made Obama a sponsor of 26 bills that became law.  This is how BO portrays himself as a highly successful legislator.------

This is just like giving him the ball at 1 yard line.-----

Has Obama repaid Jones?  Yes.  He has provided tens of millions in earmarks for Jones' district.  As to such actions, Jones famously said: "Some call it pork; I call it steak."------

Michelle Obama's salary at University of Chicago Hospitals when her husband won the US Senate seat was $121,000.  Within weeks of his swearing in, her salary went to over $320,000.  The following year Obama did an earmark request for $1 million for her employer.------

BO has used bombastic high-flown language to fool millions of people by poetic promises of change.  In reality, he has taken considerable money and support from all sorts of corporate and other special interests. I can still recall his bitterness remark of working class in meeting with billionaires in San Francisco.
you want change vote D you want dollars vote R
PUH LEEEZE!!!

MSNBC, you may as well give up the pretense! Everyone knows you're the Obama News Network, so call yourselves by your real name (ONN)

From day one, you, Huffington, Time, et al have already proclaimed Obama the Messiah (more like the anti christ).

This man is the epitome of old school politics. He IS clever, I have to admit. He calls his oponent a "hypocrite", especially after he makes a hypocritical statement. He is smooth as a snake!
Bush and McCain should explain why they dislike the American People so much.

Bush and McCain should explain why they dislike our American Soldiers so much

Bush and McCain should explain why we are still at War in Iraq and not focus heavily on Afghanistan

Bush and McCain should explain why they would talk ill against American Citizens while on Foreign Land

Bush and McCain should explain why they dislike all American having affordable Healthcare.

Bush and McCain should explain why they dislike women receiving equal pay.

Bush and McCain should explain why they are willing to bail out Wall Street while regular American Citizens are suffering.

Bush and McCain should explain why the Oil Companies are making record profits while regular Americans are struggling to keep up with the cost.

Bush and McCain should explain why they have a lot of explaining to do.
Dear MB.A
EVERY one should read front-page article this Sunday about Obama. CONCLUSION:Extraordinary life of a ordinary Amerian. I read his story to my childeren!
even if you do not like him. It is realy revealing
The Press won't scrutinize McCain...if they did attack him that they have Obama, Obama would thump him in November.
McCain policy do not help the poor and middile income groups. He is only for the rich.
The GOP should worry about the Obama Campaign's "Vote for Change" and the "Obama Organizing Fellows" programs.

The electoral map is going to change drastically this Nov.

McCain = Third Bush Term

Obama 2008!
Obama shows much sensitivity to the middle class and the poor. These two groups have been virtually ignored during the Bush regime. I am looking forward to Tuesday when he is expected to get to the finish line with the most pledged delegates overall. I gather the party wants this primary to go the distance and perhaps use these primaries to test their strengths for the general election. My concern is Hillary continues to incur net debts in each campaign she runs and at the end of the day; who is going to pick up these tabs? Will she dig deeper in the Clinton coffers to cover her expenses or will she look to Obama for a bail out. If her supporters continue to unjustifiably lambaste Obama on the Internet he should think twice about rendering her any financial assistance. Some are so rude and bellicose sprouting bile, a whole bag of lies and sporting empty pockets! If you are coming to the Obama campaign with hat in hand you should show respect.

Keating Five.  "No" to a Martin Luther King holiday (until he needed blacks to vote for him).  Admitted "dummy" on economics--macro or micro.  Admitted "C-" student, like Bush.  Wife who will not say where here $100 million investments are.  Pandering to Latinos after shifting around on immigration.  Voted for the Iraq debacle.  "Bomb, bomb, bomb."  Basically McCain is another know-nothing (and proud of it) smarta**, like Bush.  we like that kind, so he'll probably win.
Barack is for all people. For the first time I remember I AM PROUD of myself to be able to be part of 2008 presidental history. To have leaved the last 8 years with Bush, we can now have  hope of change with Barack we can be part of the system. As my husaband & I retire in the next couple of years we will be able to mable to mae it with the tax cuts for under 50,000.
All people change their minds in their lives. The difference with Obama is that he changes his mind if he thinks it will cost him the election. Seeing his raw anger recently shows that he is not the nice guy I thought he was. He came across as scary mean- and attacking on a level I hadn't seen. I am not going to vote for  him now- something inside of me just says he is the wrong one.
