Obama fires back at McCain

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
BILLINGS, MT -- Obama responded to McCain's criticism of recent comments the Illinois senator made about Iran, linking the presumptive GOP nominee to what he called the failed policies of George Bush.

Obama said both Republicans' stance that Iran must meet a list of preconditions before engaging with them directly was "naïve, wishful thinking."

He also hit McCain hard on his ties to lobbyists, portraying him as someone who does not understand that lobbyists play a negative role in Washington politics.

In a speech in Chicago this morning, McCain said Obama had downplayed the threat posed by Iran when the Democrats said yesterday in Oregon that Iran spends much less on its military and would not stand a chance against the United States in the instance of a conflict -- and that America should be open to negotiating with the country from its position of strength.

McCain said Iran produced the deadliest explosive devices used in Iraq to kill American soldiers, supported terrorist groups, was bent on Israel's destruction, and was intent on acquiring nuclear weapons. The Arizona senator also argued that meeting with Iran's president without preconditions would legitimize a dangerous leader on the world stage.

Obama hit back hard. "John McCain, he’s said, ‘Oh, Obama doesn’t understand the threat of Iran.’ I understand the threat of Iran. But what I know is that the Soviet Union had the ability to destroy the world several times over, had satellites spanning the globe, had huge masses of conventional military power -- all directed at destroying us."

Obama went on to talk about the threats Iran poses, citing many of the same points McCain has. He argued the "Bush-McCain policy of fighting an endless war in Iraq and refusing to pursue direct diplomacy with Iran" was to blame for Iran's strengthened position and suggested McCain wanted to double down on Bush's policy rather than dealing with threats like nuclear proliferation.

"John McCain is right that the greatest threat we face is a terrorist with a nuclear weapon -- that’s why when he was busy supporting a war against a country that had no nuclear weapons, I was busy in the Senate working with Republican Dick Lugar to pass legislation to secure loose nuclear weapons and loose nuclear materials around the world!"

And Obama again used the experience of past presidents to argue that America should not be afraid to negotiate with our enemies. "The Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear weapons, and Iran does not have a single one. And when the world was on the brink of nuclear holocaust, Kennedy talked to Khrushchev, and he got all those missiles out of Cuba," he said. "Why shouldn't we have the same courage and the competence to talk to our enemies?   That is what strong countries do -- that is what strong presidents do. That is what I will do as president of the United States of America."

Obama asked what Bush and McCain were afraid of when it came to dealing directly with Iran. "Demanding that a country meets all your conditions before you meet, before you meet with them -- that is not a strategy. It is just naïve, wishful thinking," he said. "I'm not afraid that we will lose some propaganda fight with a dictator. It's time for America to win those battles because we have watched George Bush lose them year after year after year."

On lobbyists
Obama also continued to draw a contrast between himself and McCain on the matter of lobbyists, hoping to take advantage of the news that the presumptive GOP nominee's campaign had severed ties with five aides in recent days because of their lobbyist work.

"After nearly three decades in Washington, John McCain can’t see or won’t acknowledge what’s obvious to all of us here today -- that lobbyists aren’t just part of the system in Washington, they’re part of the problem," he said. "John McCain gave a whole speech about what he’d do to make Washington work, but he didn’t even mention the corporate lobbyists who are the main reason it doesn’t work. He says he’s against earmarks. Well, who do ya think is slipping in those pork projects into all our laws? He says he’s against waste. Well, who think, who does he think is promoting waste in government? He says he’s for opening up government. Well, who do you think wants to keep it closed?

He said the McCain campaign was being run by lobbyists and that it was being paid for with lobbyist money. "Sen. McCain has been a candidate in this race for more than a year, but it was only in the past few days, when stories surfaced publicly about his lobbyist aides and their clients, that Sen, McCain took any action to curb their role," he said. "An adviser who’d been lobbying for big energy companies was removed. So were two others who’d done work for the military regime that’s stopping aid from getting into Burma. And just yesterday, John McCain’s national finance co-chair had to resign after it was revealed that he lobbied Senator McCain and others on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia. I’m glad Sen. McCain's taking these steps. But it’s noteworthy that two of the most influential corporate lobbyists in Washington have taken time off to run his campaign. And they are still at the helm today."

Poor McCain. He's desperate to do something to negate Obama after Obama's 75,000 plus supporters made his rally yesterday look like a small country.

That's got to be pretty frightening to an old man, who barely has the support of his own party.
When has talking been synonomous with those who are "naïve, wishful think[ers]." This is absurd rhetoric.

A Dissertation on Disillusionment: http://blakeneven.blogspot.com
Yep Yep Yep ~~~ The General election has started! Get him Obama!!!
I think McCain loses this fight. The sound bites are coming off as:

McCain: "Don't talk to people we don't like"
Obama: "We can talk to anyone because we have a position of strength".

Will American voters really buy into the stupid idea that not talking to bad guys accomplishes anything but more war?
Hooo Boy!

I knew that the Republicans were going to be TOASt this year but I didn't realize just how easy it was going to go down.

McBushMcSameMcLobby and the rest of the GOP thugs are going to end this before it really even starts.

They can't make a move without reminding everyone that McBushMCSameMcLobby is really just 4 MORE YEARS of the some old failures that we have had.

The GOP must be living in a "fairytale" if they think we "don't care" or that we don't realize McSame is attached at the hip to Bush.

They think things are bad now, after losing 3 "republican strongholds"  just wait!!

GOP is OLD, STALE, CRUSTY TOAST!!!!!

Obama 08
You just got worked McCain......yikes
Everyone, we'd better wake up!  Diplomacy has ALWAYS been wise, and that's not changed, when possible.
This McCain fellow is sounding waaaay too much like a war-lover.  I do not care what anybody says, we DO NOT NEED A WAR-MONGER IN THE WHITE HOUSE.  I don't care if the remaining sd's DO switch to Clinton; McCain needs to be retired.  You hear me!?
McFlop doesn't have a clue!

I guess that's why the republicans are running tired ads about Michelle's patriotism.  How sad!

Not this year, bring it on McFlop!  You are not ready for this {can} the dems are going to open up...I can't wait!
I have four important questions for Bush, McCain and the GOP!

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush’s invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying less for gas now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

If you answer these questions truthfully, is there any way you want to continue down the same foreign policy blunders of the last seven years?

This is a not a difficult question, most 3rd graders could answer this one.
Dialog with our enemies; you know we use to do that once upon a time in this country.
When we had competent leadership in the White House we always tried diplomacy.  Do you remember when?

FDR talked to Russia - Murderess Dictator Stalin to defeat Hitler
Kennedy talked to - Nikita S. Khrushchev removing missile bases from Cuba
Nixon talked to China – Communist threat; so we could end the war in Vietnam
Regan talked to the USSR – Evil Empire that wanted to bury our children.

Diplomacy, diplomacy you see it is always cheaper to talk first before you bomb and lay waste to our enemies.  Just think we may have been able to save over 4000 American lives in Iraq, and saved 12 billion a month if we kept talking.

We can not force our ideology on other countries beliefs; it has been proven trough out history!  If you want to use nukes or gasoline fire bombs and wipe out most of the population like we did in Germany and Japan it may have worked then, but now the rest of the world would think we are insane!

The one thing about Saddam Hussein he took no S**T from any of these people that are controlling Iraq now!  Yes he was a nasty dictator that used the chemical weapons that the US gave him back in the 80’s to kill Kurdish threats and Iranian Solders. You see Saddam Hussein seen these people as threats to has regime and government, he knew how to handle these people.  Further, Iran was scared to death of him and did not dare to step foot Iraq.  We could have used Saddam Hussein as a puppet if we were smart!  We could have paid him to do our dirty work with Al Qaeda and Iran like we did in 80’s when Regan was president.  Bush does not know how to think on that level he is to arrogant and stupid to know he had everything going for him after 9/11.

You see by keeping Saddam Hussein in power until we got off of fossil fuels would have been the smart and prudent thing to do.  We could have positioned ourselves to deal with him on another level at a different time.  Bush just made the most bone-headed foreign policy mistake in our countries history hopefully the next president can get us out of this mess.

Obama 08
DO YOU STILL THINK OBAMA CAN'T THROW A PUNCH?!!! DON'T FORGET HE IS FROM THE SOUTHSIDE OF CHICAGO!!
McSame is PROMISING 4 MORE YEARS OF GWB FAILED ECONOMIC POLICIES!

McSAME is PROMISING 100 MORE YEARS OF WAR!

McSame is PROMISING 4 MORE YEARS OF GWB!

4 MORE YEARS!

4 MORE YEARS!

4 MORE YEARS!

NOT THIS TIME McBUSH!!!!!

Obama 08
Suck it up Oh-bomb-a boy. You are destined to be worst than Bush if ever you win the presidency. You will be running the country on training wheels along with your lackey old-politics Democratic cabinet.

Give me a break! Enough of being a hypocrite because talk is cheap...

Go McCain!
Go Obama!!!  And you people thought the guy was soft, he can't stand up to the republicans!??  He just didn't want to attack a fellow Democrat!!  THAT is the deal!!  Democrats have nothing to gain by teraring each other down!  they are supposed to be on the same side!  That was Hillary's fatal mistake.

McCain; you can pick your face up now. LMAO
SO much energy.

I'd be surprised if McCain's team wasn't huddled in a corner cowering from such amazing influence.
WOW!  If the Republicans thought they were going to Swift Boat Obama this year, then they failed to realize that they were going to get LEFT flanked!

Obama is hitting back and he's hitting back hard with ONLY the facts on the issues and none of that personal garbage.

He's right, if Bush and McCain will throw Obama under a bus for talking to our enemies, will McCain throw Kennedy, Nixon, W. Bush, Regan, Rice, and Gates under the bus as well?

The world is waiting on you to respond from the HYPOCRISY EXPRESS Mr. Mcain!
Oh sheesh...I thnk McCain just got a text on his 'jitterbug'...Obama is making fillets out of your campaingn.   I can't wait for the debates.  It is so over for Bush III.  Is it clear yet that this is no Kerry, Gore, Mondale cookie cutter Democrat yet?  Wake up, McCain MUST do a perfect ten to win this, even with the media's use of kid gloves on the Republican nominee.  He is no Mary Lou....
Oh, this is getting good!!

John Kerry, take some notes.   You need to grow a couple of you know what.

Vote Democrat 08!!
Good job. Speak the truth. It is not negative campaign to discuss the truth and pointing out what the voters have been noticing for some time. It is about time that the democrats fight hard and speak for the people.
Watching Obama and McCain is better then watching old
clips of John McEnroe (spelling?) and Jimmy Connors
going after each other during a tennis match.

Two good reasons for Hillary not being Obama's Veep:

The Clinton vs. Paul trial WILL include Hillary to
testify right after the Nov. nomination.

Bill and Hillary WILL do everything they can to make
sure they are in the White House instead of the Veep
mansion.

Obama '08
To all Clinton supporters that think Obama is not tuff enuff or that he cant fight for you. Take notice he just isn't in the game of bashing a fellow democrat. He is very tuff and will fight to win for all of us democrats. It is very close to time for us to circle the wagons and support the Democrats nominee be it Obama or Clinton. Dont believe that this guy is not a fighter , and dont believe that McBush would be a better choice.  Bush and McSame are tied at the hip . Vote Democrat.
Rip him up Barack!
He is a fossil and will crumble under the press scrutiny!
Where was this Obama months ago?!? If he had hit Clinton this hard and this well the Democratic Primary would have been settled LONG ago!

It's great to see a democrat who is filling to fit back and not give the republicans an inch on National Security! It's about time!
The 1st debate is gonna be incredible. I can't wait to see the old man straining to look for a telepromter that won't be there. Repubs are really going to have something to worry about.
body SLAMMED!!!!!!!
BOO-YAH!!!

Obama '08
Wah, wha, wha.

Bush and his failed foreign policy is identical to that of McCain't: if they hate us who cares why?  Let's bomb them into liking us!

Middle East peace is a fairy tale.  Even if Israel didn't exist the arabs would find something to kill each other about (like the Sunnis and Shiites are currently doing in Iraq).  At best we can do damage control and we won't be able control anything if we keep ticking them off and killing their relatives.  It is the land of posturing, eye-for-eye and martyrdom and we keep giving them reasons to posture against us, kill us, and throw suicide bombers at us.

We need to get out and talk with them in words that they culturally understand.  Will McSame do that?  Absolutely not.  He won't spend two minutes learning the culture he wants to push our agenda on.

Obama, on the other hand, has the intelligence to do it.  Will he find a way to deliver peace to the middle east?  No, nobody can.  He appears to understand, however, that the way to do so is to find out what, if anything, can dissuade the leaders from trying to annihilate each other and the only way to do that is to talk with them.
On this one occasion I have to disagree with Sen.Obama. I believe the greatest threat to our country is another leader who lacks wisdom, vision, and integrity. The last thing we need is another war mongering, loose cannon, stubborn short sighted man in the W.H. I'm more afraid of where the dirction this country is going than I am of any terroist threat. OBAMA 08
It is funny that McCain does not realize what is going to hit him.  His way and Bush's way does not work.  It has killed over 4,000 people, cost untold amts of money, put us in debt to China.  We are well on our way to being a third world country and McCain is afraid to talk to people.  How pitiful.  Obama has shown the world what he is made up-strength!  Only someone who is sure of themselves and the American People can be secure telling the truth.  We have been lied to for so long it is a breath of fresh air.
McCain's campaign is one big lobbyist free for all. He has sold his soul for these influence peddlers. If McCain is elected, our foreign policy will be dictated to us by Saudi Arabia and the totalitarian dictatorship of Burma.
His lobbyist most likely have ties to the Bin Laden family; his lobbyists already work for Saudi Arabia.
Think of our foreign policy being determined by Bin Laden! I'd rather not.
This McCain fraud is dangerous to the security of the country.
I wonder where the dog and pony show the Pentagon was going to put on last week went with those 20,000 pieces of "evidence" of Iranian help to the terrorists in Iraq they touted for several months?  Oh that's right when some real military experts looked over the "evidence" they found not one single piece came from Iran.

Naive, not trustworthy "Bush Hugger" McCain is working with "Warmonger" Bush to fool us into thinking we need another war, this time with Iran.  We see the same foul runup to war with the same bombastic rhetoric and outright lies we saw before we got suckered into going into Iraq.

We don't need any more stinking false wars meant to keep the repugnant ones in power and our country in poverty.

Go Obama 08/12!
President Bush/Cheney/McCain and their conservative Republican cronies have been feeding this country with their hog wash propaganda of terror, hype, fear and Republican patriotic feeding frenzy to control the hearts and minds of a misled and gullible nation for the last 7.5 years.  Consider that Bush/Cheney's  fiscal and foreign policy has been nothing but platitudes in face of the blaring economic terror situation in this country, while all the while giving away the store to their corporate friends.

President Bush/Cheney/McCain's foreign policy has produced zero, zilch results. All Bush has done is read speeches, invade countries, caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and pushed up the price of oil from $30/barrel in 2000 to $127/barrel now.  Heck of a job Bushies.

President Bush/Cheney's last attempt to lower the price of oil was to go begging to convince the Saudis to increase oil production, the Saudis said NO. Now what, are we going to invade Saudi Arabia?

Our MBA President and his Cohorts have given us over $4 trillion federal deficit, over $13 trillion national debt to the Chinese, Arabs, Japanese/others, the lowest ever value of the USD, and the costliest war at over $17 billion a month for the Afghanistan and Iraq.

72 year old Senator McCain with his senior moments coming more frequently will give us more of the same. The United States of Corporate America, a government of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations, paid for by Republican values voters who don't understand that they just voted to send their jobs overseas, and to reduce the time that they can collect unemployment while looking for a minimum wage job.
The Obama campaign announces that Alaska superdelegates Cindy Spanyers and Blake Johnson are with Obama.

POW!!! Does Mc Cain really think people are just going to roll over and believe him. This is good that the Obama is striking back quickly and with substantial force

OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD
A great response by Obama!!! McBush stands no chance.

Obama '08
McCain has changed positions so much, no one at this point should take this charlatan seriously:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y395Tftgz0E
#894 out of 899 in his class; preferential treatment because his daddy was an admiral allowed him to be a pilot. He was a North Vietnamese collaborator according to the Vietnam vets he was held with:
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/index.htm
Now this fraud has the nerve to bill himself as a foreign policy expert. I would venture his lobbyist staff members will set his foreign policy agenda, with aiding and abetting from all their nefarious and notorious clients. This is from moveon.org:
http://pol.moveon.org/charlieblack/video.html#facts
This man has been bought through his staff by foreign governments, and is a collaborator to boot!
He has no moral credibility.
I cannot wait for these two to have a debate. What the hell is John McCain going to do when he has to answer questions? You know, without a prompter? Or will he demand to be given the questions beforehand? I cannot wait until we count to see how many times he says "my friend".  All of the republicans need to voted out of office, and democrats, if they have anything to do with lobbyists. We need to take our country back. And if the republicans want to talk about what Michelle said, I hope somebody gets the records on what John said to the Vietcong, and then get Cindy's records. You know, the drugs. And her stealing. And don't forget the adultery. They ought to shut up.
I just love the way Barack Obama doesn't mince words in exposing the lies of "Flip Flop" McCain.  It's so much fun to watch him run rings around the grumpy old man who yells at clouds.

It will be so good to rid ourselves of "Lobbyist Lover" McCain and his democracy hating lobbyists.  It only proves that he hates democracy when he surrounds himself with so many lobbyists who want to destroy our democracy in favoir of the current totalitarian dictatorship.

Go Obama 08/12!
Good for Obama.

How McCain can think that the instant nuclear obliteration the USSR could have rained on the USA is not a much greater threat than Iran can dream of being is a sign of the fear mongering the Bush GOP has fallen prey to. Without an all powerful boogie man, their foreign policy is shown for the abject failure it is.

Yes, Iran has political interests in conflict with those of the USA but they have little to no capability to project power beyond the Persian Gulf. To say anything else is just lying to the American people.
Oh, please, Obama. Don't go bragging about the work you did in the Senate and compare it's effectiveness to the decisions made by our President and it's effectiveness. You have already expressed that the reason you want to go ahead and run for the White House is because you can't get accomplished in the Senate what things are on your agenda.
Is mr. obama really thinking that just talking with a country(anti usa)without any conditions is the way our government works? I'm very sorry for his thinking and have great doubts about him becoming president. I haven't heard anything positive from him concerning international politics. He is an inexperienced senator from the midwest and dosen't have foreign experience. He is not ready for the presidency of one of the most powerful countries on this earth.
Obama is no John Kerry... I like John a lot but Obama is more directly aggressive against the slimy Republican attack dogs.

He represents what we need in leadership as Democrats... he is charismatic, smart and tough!

Plus, he speaks what the American people need, the TRUTH. That has been in short supply for 8 long years.

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
Like I said Mccain, quit pickin fights you can't win!
Keep talking mccain - the more you talk the dumber you sound! Can't wait for the debates! Even the repubs have to realize how bad mccain is!
Keep it up McCain, your silly comments make me more determined to support the democratic party. We are a laughing stock to the whole world. Please don't shortchange the American public. We are as mad as hell and not going to take you and your Republican's bullying any more.
It shows true weakness and cowardice, to be afraid to sit with your enemies w/o preconditions.
McCain is in clear support of a Bush 3rd-term.  We have a bunker-mentality concerning foreign policy.

We expect our enemies to cease and desist their actions and their own saber rattling before we will meet with them.

This is madness.  In other words, more of the same rhetoric we've heard for the past 8 years.  What McCain is afraid of is that meeting with our enemies might do some good.

He confuses diplomatic dialogue as appeasement.    It's simple:  We outlay our concerns and then employ the carrot and stick approach.  Even if it does not work, so long as we state our case and draw a line that our ememies must not cross (example, Israel's security), we've made progress in restoring our name in the world.  And the world will take notice of our more positive approach.

Anyone who has traveled overseas during this administration knows exactly what I'm talking about as far as how we are viewed.

I respect very much Sen McCain's service to country and his sacrifices.  I have no doubt of his concern for our safety as a nation.

But he is so out of touch.  He's looking at the world with blinders on.  He is not seeing the big picture.

And as far as the domestic concerns are concerned....I'll leave my comments on that issue at another time.

CHANGE IS NEEDED.
What are McCain and Bush afraid of, indeed?  THEY are the fearful ones.  Strong, confident nations (like strong, confident people) aren't afraid to talk to their adversaries.

What a breath of fresh air it will be to have a president who is not afraid to treat even our adversaries like human beings!

Sen. Obama writes in his book "The Audacity of Hope" about the "heart" of his moral code, learned from his mother, which makes it very clear how he views the world:

"She disdained any kind of cruelty or thoughtlessness or abuse of power...Whenever she saw even a hint of such behavior in me she would look me square in the eyes and ask, "How do you think that would make you feel?"

Otherwise known as The Golden Rule...and words to live by when dealing with your next door neighbor or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

I want the man who lives by that moral code in the White House!!
McCain, who prides himself as ready to be the Commander in Chief seems to have forgotten some of the basic rules.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

You lose nothing from talking to your enemy, You lose much when you plan in ignorance.
