McCain: The next Zell Miller?

Posted: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 9:22 AM by Domenico Montanaro

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Joe Lieberman writes that “Obama, who, contrary to his rhetorical invocations of bipartisan change, has not been willing to stand up to his party's left wing on a single significant national security or international economic issue in this campaign. In this, Sen. Obama stands in stark contrast to John McCain, who has shown the political courage throughout his career to do what he thinks is right – regardless of its popularity in his party or outside it. John also understands something else that too many Democrats seem to have become confused about lately – the difference between America's friends and America's enemies.”

“There are of course times when it makes sense to engage in tough diplomacy with hostile governments. Yet what Mr. Obama has proposed is not selective engagement, but a blanket policy of meeting personally as president, without preconditions, in his first year in office, with the leaders of the most vicious, anti-American regimes on the planet. Mr. Obama has said that in proposing this, he is following in the footsteps of Reagan and JFK. But Kennedy never met with Castro, and Reagan never met with Khomeini. And can anyone imagine Presidents Kennedy or Reagan sitting down unconditionally with Ahmadinejad or Chavez? I certainly cannot.”

The Washington Post covers McCain’s attack on Obama on Cuba. “Sen. John McCain stepped up his assault on Sen. Barack Obama's foreign policy credentials at a rally in Miami yesterday, criticizing Obama's willingness to talk to Cuban President Raul Castro and other hostile foreign leaders without preconditions. But McCain's argument was undercut when a 2006 video emerged of former secretary of state James A. Baker III, a prominent McCain supporter, saying that "talking to an enemy is not in my view appeasement."

Will Bush once again tag-team Obama? Per NBC’s Kevin Corke, President Bush today will deliver remarks in the East Room commemorating May 21st as a "Day of Solidarity with the Cuban People."

In a speech in DC yesterday, Democrat Joe Biden had some tough words for President Bush and McCain on the subject of foreign policy. “The first thing last week revealed is an emerging, ugly pattern of political attacks masquerading as policy,” he said. “It started last month, when Senator McCain said: ‘I think it's very clear who Hamas wants to be the next president of the United States. So apparently has Danny Ortega and several others… If Senator Obama is favored by Hamas, I think people can make judgments accordingly.’ His surrogates repeated the charge.

“Then, last week, the President unleashed a long distance swift boat attack on Senator Obama and Democrats in the Israeli Knesset… What is stunning is that this is the only president I know -- and I've served with seven -- who would engage in this kind of activity while overseas in the Knesset. What is disheartening is that John McCain, a man I admire, endorsed the President’s remarks instead of repudiating them.”

Biden then concluded, “When it comes to the most urgent national security challenges we face -- Iraq, Iran and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- last week made it clear that stylistically and substantively, there is no day light between George Bush and John McCain. They are joined at the hip. There would be no change with a McCain presidency and so there will be a real choice for Americans next November.”

Lieberman should just come out and announce his switch to the GOP.

He's already got his lips planted on their butt anyway, might as well go the rest of the way.
Um, Zell Miller was a Democrat who becamed cured.
If anyone believes that Joe Lieberman will help McCain to bring any Democrats to his side, he is sorely mistaken.  Lieberman is a joke and viewed as a traitor to Dems.  He seems to care much more about the security of Israel than the welfare of the American people.
Obama's foreign policy is probably more stupid then Jimmy Carter's - and thats saying something. The man doesn't seem to have a clue to the history of why our foreign policy is what it is today. Obama, if we are so unfortunate to have him as president, would be pushed around like a rag doll by the dictators from, as Obama states, "these tiny little countries". The man is clueless. This is a change we can do without.
Yeah let's trust "Traitor" Joe Lieberman about sleeping with the enemy.  It's about time the ignorant masses start listening to us liberals since we're not the ones who have screwed up this country so badly, that would be the conservative lunatic fringe.

If it weren't for us liberals there would be no democracy named the United States of America because the conservative Tory Traitors wanted to keep on being boot licking lackeys of King George.  Now "Traitor" Joe is the new boot licking lackey of our current "Tyrant" George.

Go Obama 08/12!
I think that if Bush continues to 'tag-team' Barack Obama it only fuels the fire of anti-Bush (and by default, anti-McCain) sentiment amongst voters.

Oh, and if John McCain is the 'new' Zell Miller, shouldn't he challenge Chris Matthews to a duel?  Now THAT'S playing Hardball.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Khrushchev said of America, "We will bury you." Does Joe Lieberman not consider that anti-American?
I can't believe Joe Lieberman was ever the VP on a Democratic ticket. He just makes me shake my head and wonder what happened to him.
Bush will be as much help to McWar as an anchor would be to a swimmer.  White, working class (who provide the bulk of our military), think about THIS kinda crap when you vote!  It'll be your kids glutes on the line!
It's painfully obvious that "Warmonger" Bush's diplomacy of not talking to our enemies without them caving in to his preconditions first has gotten nowhere.  "Bush Hugger" McCain will continue this losing diplomatic battle and lose us the diplomacy war which will just lead to more real war, more dollars wasted, more brave soldiers dead and our economy tanking.

It's obvious that Barack Obama is the only candidate with a realistic diplomacy plan which will work despite the delusional attacks by a grumpy, clueless, mean old man.  Geez where's McCain's handler, "Traitor" Joe Lieberman to whisper advice into his ear?

Go Obama 08/12!
Mr. Arrogance (BO) does like to TRY to compare himself to JFK and Reagen. What a joke!  But, let's think about JFK meeting with Kruschev. JFK rushed right off and met with Kruschev in Vienna. Within one year, the Berlin Wall was up. In another year, nuclear mislles were setting in Cuba pointed toward the US.  Experts believe that JFK showed weakness when he rushed off for that meeting.

June 10  Independents Day--Clinton supporters change party affiliation to Independent to send en masse message they will NOT vote for Obama.  Tell everybody you know. Post on every website.
What a twisted point of view, Lieberman has! It's a lack of courage that has Obama voting as a progressive? Maybe Obama has been voting his own mind and conscience, Joe. Maybe he doesn't agree with your paranoid positions on behalf of Halliburton and Blackwater.

I always hated Joe. He was pathetic against Cheney ... it looked like he was taking a dive during the whole campaign. Next to Ralph Nader, Joe Lieberman is most responsible for the last eight years of hell.
Lieberman is a mccain lapdog bootlicker, mccain is a bush lapdog bootlicker, and bush is a saudi lapdog bootlicker. VOTE DEMOCRAT!
Do not forget that Bo is a replica of Martin Luther King jr. and all other famous men and women also.Wonder who he realy is?
Joe Lieberman should start shopping for a place in Haifa.  He's cooked in politics in this country.  And you can bet he won't get a job in television.  Of course Rush could always use a little side-kick on radio.  And there's an audience that doesn't know trash from hash.
Q1: If McCain had all this time to get his campaign in line, why did it take himself until now to figure out the conflicts of interest w all the lobbyist influence on his staff?

A1: Better questions is, what if Hillary would be the nominee?  He wouldn’t have fired a soul.  He did this purely because just as Obama out-Democrat’d HRC, Obama will out-reform McCain.  As soon as it became clear that Obama was in, Mr. Integrity started purging lobbyists.

Q2: Beside the besmirch on McCain’s credibility and integrity, what does this mean long term?

A2: If he were to be Pres, he would hire all those lobbyists back.

Straight talk, my ash.
To - June 10th Independents Day  NObama

I switched to Independent already!  It was all about Hillary too!  Disliked her so much I did not want to be associated as a Democrat.  Switching back as soon as Obama is the candidate.  Thanks for heads up!
Mr. Obama is a patriot and good citizen. His big problem is summed up in one word: naive. If it should happen, I dread the day he dialogues with our enemies.
And today we read that Israel is negotiating with Syria, and the talks are being mediated by Turkey.  Which means Israel, about which Joe Lieberman cares more than anything, is negotiating with a terrorist state.  How's he going to explain that one?
I absolutely dispise that hack Joe Lieberman to the core.  He's definitely not a democrat.  He's a disgrace and yes, he does put Israeli interests ahead of American ones.

I know most fellow democrats agree on this.
DemocRATS, you never change
It is a sad day in America when supporters of a candidate who lost are so selfish that they would hand the election to the republicans.  Kinda' shows what type of candidate they support.  It is bad enough to be a democrat or republican before they are an American, but because their candidate did not win they are going to pout and sulk.  It's not about the candidate it's about what is good for our country.
I'd like to tell you Republicans something about this issue, but that would be appeasement.
Sam Mills,

How has the Bush foreign policy worked for you for the past 7 years? Happy with the situation in Iraq? Happy that over 4,000 American lives have been lost? Happy that Bush has borrowed $3 TRILLION dollars from China to fund his stupid war? Happy with gas prices at $4/gallon? If you can say yes to any of these questions, by all means cast your vote for McCain....he's likely to start another war with Iran. That should make you gitty. However, if you want someone who will promote diplomacy rather than the "cowboy" effect, take a look at Obama. At least he's intelligent. Go Obama '08
I must say to June 10 Independents Day you are truly amazing you didn't get your way so you will vote for four more years of war, with our brave men & women getting killed and dreadfully injured.  You will vote for four more years of our jobs and companies, that provide our mitlitary hardware, moving overseas.  You will vote for more tax cuts for the wealthy.  You will vote for Supreme Court Justices like Alito.  You will vote for global warming. You will vote for privatized Social Security.

Like I said you are truly amazing!!!!!
Carrie Webb: Um, Zell Miller was a Democrat who becamed cured.

Thomas: Cured of what? Democracy?

It is ok for Israel to talk to Syria?
It is ok for The US to talk to China?
It is Ok for the US to talk to Korea?

But It is not OK to talk to CUBA, IRAN, or Venezuela??? you people are twisted if you think the BUSH way is the right way. What, you are OK with y-our President begging for OIL???? LOL
We Respect Hillary, do you? Will you vote in November, like she will????????????????????????????????? Obama ‘08
Well, having seen Zell's verbal attack on Chris Matthews, I'd say he and McCain have about the same temperament.

I'm just waiting for McCain to blow up - massively - about something, some time during this campaign. He's too much of a hothead when things don't go his way.
Looks like the Bush/McCain team is, again, trying the fear tactics over Cuba.

"Fool us once, shame on you, fool us twice, shame on us!!!"  The politics of the 19th & 20th centuries won't work in the 21st.

Now that Raul Castro has made some movement toward easing restrictions on the Cuban people, it seems to be a good time to begin negotiations.   Bullying is NOT the way to influence others.
The way i see it Mccain's & Lieberman's foreign policy is ONLY based on protecting Isreal. Why should the USA keep on lossing it's young men & women for a country that can protect it's self.
Nobama: June 10  Independents Day--Clinton supporters change party affiliation to Independent to send en masse message they will NOT vote for Obama.  Tell everybody you know. Post on every website.

Hey Buddy, as an independent, I dropped out of the two-party system for a reason... not as a gimmick. If you want to do something as a gimmick, leave us out of it. The problems we have with the Republicans and the Democrats are serious to us. Take your bullsh*t game somewhere else. Thank you.
"Talking with an enemy is not ncecessarily appeasment"  James Baker III.
I can imagine Kennedy talking to Kruschev, and Reagan talking to Gorbechev---because they DID! They talked to enemies who were capable of laying nuclear waste to us and the rest of the world, to a man who declared "we will bury you".  Neither president appeased these enemies, but they DID make known to them what the U.S. expected and wanted of them.  And, eventually, through diplomatic dialogue, they got it. Bush can "tag-team" Obama all he wants, until so many people point out how badly his cowboy non-diplomacy has screwed up the world, and then maybe he'll stop out of pure embarrassment.
Joe Lieberman hates all the Arabs and Muslims and only cares for Israel and the Jewish people.  Lieberman is, in my opinion a devote racist and a sympathizer the Israeli agenda.  Joe Lieberman doesnt even seem to care  what the American people think, much like George Bush and John McCain. Israel is just as important to the world as is Iran, Syria, Egypt and Australia, get it.
Joe Lieberman lost his democratic nomination and ran as an independent to lock up the Republican vote.  Lieberman is a traitor to his party and seems to be on his way to becoming a traitor to his country.
Joe Lieberman has 1 agenda only as a representative of the state of CT - to be the sole watchdog of the state of Israel. We all support the safety and protection of Israel, but when you abandon your party and walk side by side with a man who embodies the expansion of war in the Middle East with no negotiations - it is insane. Can he not see that Israel is less safe with these policies. CT needs to wake up and see that Joe Lieberman does not represent them. In Rhode Island we have a former Republican Senator named Lincoln Chafee (now Independent)who took a stand against the war (the only republican to do so)and still lost his seat to a Democrat. This was a man with integrity who stood up to the Bush policies. Joe Lieberman is man with his own personal agenda. Dump him CT.
Lieberman = snake oil salesman, hawk, whiner.

Defense and foreign policy experts agree that one of the most significant threats facing the U.S. is loose, unsecured nuclear weapons at risk of falling into hands of rogue nations and terrorists.

Good thing Obama successfully worked on legislation to deal with this while the country otherwise lost control of foreign affairs and safety under Bush II.
MCCAIN: THE NEXT ZELL MILLER?

A provocative title, but why doesn't the article make that link? Is the author a fraidy-cat? McCain *may* become the next Zell - given a little time, but the article does nothing to make the case. If you're going to make a flame-thrower headline, back it up with an argument! Geeze!
I am so tired of the spammers on this board who have nothing positive to say about Hillary Clinton or John McCain, but who come here specifically to try to drive a wedge through the Democratic Party. Look, everyone deserves to be heard, right? And that includes all you prankster ***holes, right? Well then, it includes me now, too:

John McCain is an alien robot made up of reconstitutedd stem cells ancient Hucckabean metals. Only the Sword of Romney, welded by the ancients (all of whom were young when the McCainbot was built) can slay him.

C'mon, that's at LEAST as believable as the idea that someone who really loved and supported Hillary Clinton is going to vote for John McCain over a Democrat who shares most of her views.
when new senate will be sworn on in January, Senate Democrat who will add supposedly 5-6 seats shoud immediately exclude Liberman from their caucas, strip him of all leadeship positions he has, and announce never to accept him in their caucas. He is traitor he is not Democrat, never was and sholud be treated by Democratic leadership accordingly.

It is the year of the Rat BTW , sorry to burst your bubble.
This should be very interesting.  I think we're looking at Obama's VP!!  I think it would be an unstoppable ticket.

The cure for democracy would be monarchy , I guess your happy with King George ? Zell Miller was a nut and from Georgia to boot. I'll take democracy anyday over monarchy. Repugnicans don't know how to share and need to be sent to the corner for quite time
I am from Connecticut and the Democratic party here hates JOE LIEBERMAN!He is an arrogant traitor. When the party voted him out , he would not leave and got elected in by the Republicans. Now he's attached at the hip to Bomb Bomb Iran McCain. He is so out of touch. I am embarrased he represents our state.
So let me get this straight!  There is a small "banana republic" in the Caribbean, where they still drive 1950's auto's, they just now are getting cell phones, they are dirt poor, we have a military base on one end of the island, and yet we the United States are deathly afraid of Cuba. On the other hand the "largest" Communist country in the world, China, is our largest trading partner, and their investments here is about the only thing keeping our economy afloat but we LOVE them.  I say engage Cuba just like Nixon did in China if you want it to become a more free country.  Not engaging them does nothing.  if you do what you have always done you will get what you always got!  It's time for our foreign policy to become more mature.  Obama is right!
Joe Lieberman is on my list of people who should just shut up and go away.  Why does he hate America so much?
TO: JTS

Just like Mr. Obama, you have no idea what the word "appeasement" means.
it is way past time for Connecticut to recall Joke Lieberman.
Marsha, I don't understand your comment.  Much like the great Slo-Bama, you have contradicted yourself in back-to-back sentences.  You say that someone who supported Hillary who doesn't want to vote for Obama is selfish and will hand the election to the republicans.  Then, in the next breath you say that they should be Americans before tied to a particular party.  How does voting for Obama BECAUSE he's the Democratic nominee, mean that you are not tied to a party?  Did you ever consider the possibility that Obama doesn't represent their values or beliefs or that they have questions about who he really is and what he really supports?  But he's Obama...EVERYBODY loves him.  Except racists, right.  They're the only people who just are blind to the bright shining light that is Obama.

Obama is NOT good for our country!
As a Connecticut Democrat who has had the pleasure (or more recently, displeasure) of meeting Joseph Isadora Lieberman on more than one occasion, I can say that while he is a nice man, he is a bumbling fool.

His own party disowned him in a primary election, forcing him to run as an independent, simply because the republican's wouldn't take him either.  Now he thinks with all his grandiose speeches in favor of McCain that he is going to woo democrats or Hillary Clinton supporters to John McCain?  The party doesn't even like him, so what makes him think he can sway anyones vote.

As a Democrat who is a Hillary Clinton supporter, I surely will not be voting for Barack Obama nor John McCain in the upcoming election, but instead will allow the Democratic party to reflect on the mistake it made in ever allowing people like Joe Lieberman into the party, and then handing the reigns over to someone like Barack Obama.
What Joe L refuses to acknowledge is that the way he approves of doing things on the international scene has been and is an utter failure for US interests. That is why Obama will be the next president and why Joe will be demoted in the next Congress.
For heavens sake, just look at McCains voting record, One would have to be brain dead to support this warmonger. It is unimaginable after 8 years of the stupidest president this country has ever had to vote for more of the same. McCain voted (8) EIGHT times against raising the minimum wage, his votes have cost americans jobs,He voted AGAINST the GI Bill, NOW that's supporting our troops!! He and Leaperman are happy to supply the bullets but no more educational benefits. They support the troopers dying for a lie, but to hell with their families.
