McCain fires back on foreign policy

From NBC's Mark Murray
While Obama today blasted McCain over his campaign's ties to lobbyists and linked him to President Bush's foreign policy, McCain fired back, questioning Obama's foreign-policy judgment and experience.

"After Senator Obama's own advisers and supporters backtracked from his stated desire to hold summit meetings with the leaders of the world's worst regimes, Senator Obama himself has begun to reinterpret his stand," the Arizona senator said in a statement. "He now claims that some 'fear' to 'negotiate' with the likes of Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who has called Israel a 'stinking corpse' or Ayatollah Khamenei, who called Israel a 'cancerous tumor.' I have news for Senator Obama: I have met some very bad people before in my life. It is not fear that drives my opposition to unconditional meetings with Ahmadinejad, Khamenei, Kim Jong Il, and Raul Castro; rather it is my clear understanding that such a course will fail to eliminate the threat posed by these rogue regimes. I don't fear to negotiate. Instead I have the knowledge and experience to understand the dangerous consequences of a naive approach to Presidential summits based entirely on emotion."

"The question before the American people is which candidate is best able to secure the peace for the next generation of Americans, a peace that will keep our nation safe, prosperous and free. Senator Obama's desire to meet unconditionally in his first year at the presidential level with Iranian leaders is reckless, and demonstrates poor judgment that will make the world more dangerous...

"Senator Obama has consistently offered his judgment on Iraq, and he has been consistently wrong. He said that General Petraeus' new strategy would not reduce sectarian violence, but would worsen it. He was wrong. He said the dynamics in Iraq would not change as a result of the 'surge.' He was wrong. One year ago, he voted to cut off all funds for our forces fighting extremists in Iraq. He was wrong...

"We continue to face challenges in Iraq, and we have a lot of work ahead. Yet the American people must ask whether we are more or less likely to succeed there if Senator Obama has his way. Each of these positive developments in Iraq is the direct result of the new strategy that Senator Obama opposed. Senator Obama consistently predicted the new strategy would fail, and at every step events have demonstrated his judgment was consistently wrong. He now says that he intends to withdraw combat troops from Iraq -- one to two brigades per month until they are all removed -- regardless of the conditions in Iraq, irrespective of the consequences for our national security, and despite the best advice of our commanders on the ground. He is wrong again, and the American people deserve a President who has the strength, judgment and experience to keep our country safe and secure."

*** UPDATE *** The Obama camp sends along this response from the Illinois senator: "While I always appreciate hearing the news from John McCain, he should explain to the American people why almost every single promise and prediction that he has made about Iraq has turned to be catastrophically wrong, including his support for a surge that was supposed to achieve political reconciliation. While John McCain offers his poor judgment in supporting George Bush's war and a failed foreign policy that has left us less secure, I will continue to make the case for a new foreign policy that deploys all elements of American power -- including tough, principled and direct diplomacy. It's stunning that in such a lengthy written statement, John McCain could not articulate a single new idea that hasn't been tried -- and failed -- over the last eight years."

Whatever McCain!!!  You are OLD news and you know it!!
Well.... Why is it that Senator McCain won't negotiate firmly with Iran?  If he isn't afraid, what is it?  What is the alternative to strong diplomacy?

Does Senator McCain want to attack and occupy Iran?  If so, get ready America for a draft, because that is the only way we could do that.
"blah blah blah... bomb bomb Iran"

Ugh.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
After releasing the statement, McCain promptly fell asleep and let loose in his "Oops! I Crapped My Pants".
why does McCain care about the next generation,he has not shown us that he does. if he cared he would have not voted for the war that has kill so many of our next generation of fathers and mothers. if he cared about the next generation he would have not alined him self with GWB. and further more he is 71 years old, does any body think he really cares about the next generation. and i new stragety in Iraq, my god man the war is not going to be won, you should know that, this is the vietman of the 2100. just like vietman, we should not be in iraq.
Newsflash to McCain: It is not commanders on the ground who lead the armed forces.  It is the commander-in-chief.  Since it's been more than a few years since your last civics class, the commander-in-chief leads the armed forces.  And guess what?  The President is the commander in chief!  That means, yes, yes, that the President leads the armed forces.  Listening to commanders on the ground is vital, but FOLLOWING commanders on the ground is ignorant.
Obama's going to negotiate with terrorists!  BOOGA BOOGA!  He's going to take your guns!  BOOGA BOOGA!  He hates America!  BOOGA BOOGA! He's waah wa waaah wa waaaaaah wa!  Woo wah waaaah woo wa wa!  Zzzzzzzzzzz...

Get ready for an Obama presidency Repukes!
I like this G.E. posts -- Obama and McCain go back and forth saying essentially the same thing.  It's good because by the time we get to August, we will know exactly where each of them stands on the ISSUES, which is what is important.

Question: Why are you guys giving HRC so much spotlight as if the following weren't true:
1) Pledged Delegates - Obama
2) Super Delegates - Obama has majority so far
3) States won - Obama
4) Most Votes - Obama

You guys treat him like he is a distant second.

I know you guys are catching **** from the other campaign, but right now we want to get to some General Election stuff.
Hey McBush,

We all know what YOUR foreign policy plans are:

100 OR MORE YEARS OF WAR!!!!!!

And we all know what YOUR economic plans are:

PROMISE OF 4 MORE YEARS OF GWB ECONOMIC FAILURES!!!!

MCBUSH PROMISES 4 MORE YEARS OF GWB!!!!

4MORE YEARS!
4MORE YEARS!
4MORE YEARS!

No thanks McBUSH, I can't afford that.

Obama 08
WOW. McCain just handed Obama's butt to him in a paper bag.
Obama's toast against this war hero in the general.

If Obama is the Democratic Nominee, The Republicans will chew up and spit out this inexperienced neophyte.

MSNBC who is in the tank for Obama probably won't publish this comment.

Way to deflect, McCain.  Now, let's get back to the question at hand and the lobbyists.  I especially want to know how the heck you "didnt know" 4 of your top staff memembers had various dictators as clients.  Tell me that one Mr. National Security.
So old and tired... the thing's McCan't uses against Barack. Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel has already slammed McCan't for this. How many more times will we hear it this summer?
Hallucinating again?
Old man yells at cloud.
Yes because by refusing to talk to Iran, Cuba and North Korea they are much weaker countries today than eight years ago. Oh wait...that isn't true and in fact two of them are thisclose to becoming nuclear states. Meanwhile we STILL haven't captured or killed Osama bin Laden. Stay the course, right McCain?

If it's naive to think that we should do something different when what we've done so far has been a complete failure, then I'm damn proud to be naive.
Distortion, distortion...

"...he intends to withdraw combat troops from Iraq...regardless of the conditions in Iraq, irrespective of the consequences for our national security, and despite the best advice of our commanders on the ground.."

That is the biggest distortion of Senator Obama's position yet. He has said again and again that he'll be as careful pulling the troops out, as careless as they were put in in the first place.
"...While I think we all agree that the voters from MI and FL broke the rules, disenfranchised themselves and brought all of this misery and woe upon themselves..."

Correction - WE did not have a say in this.  This was decided by the DNC.

BTW - The RNC penalized states for holding their primaries out of turn - IF every vote counts, shouldn't we count them too?  Oh wait - HRC wasn't on their ballot...she should have been...
McSame is a joke.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
*Rolls his eyes* Of course the surge reduced violence in one part of Iraq.  When there are more guns pointing, people tend to back down.  Doesnt change the fact once they start leaving the violence will resume since this administration, one McDolt wants to continue, has never bothered to actually adress the problems in Iraq.  Security at the barrel of a gun is false security at best...
John, how do you know it wouldn't work? We must be willing to think out of the box to find common ground that will help lead us to a satisfactory resolution. Your way of thinking, as is George Bush's, is not working. In todays world, we have to be open to all situations and be prepared to do things differently.

Nothing gets accomplished if all we do is throw brickbats.
The world has changed so much in a few short years, no longer is America considered a friend to emulate or a foe to fear and we have done it to ourselves.

Read Thomas Friedman's column in todays NY Times and follow his suggestions for other books to read.

Wake up, America, research the sound bites and push for a better country.

OBAMA '08
Kennedy negotiated with the Soviet Union.
Nixon negotiated with China.
Carter negotiated with the middle east helping bring peace between Israel and Egypt.
Reagan negotiated with Iran.
W Bush negotiated with Syria and North Korea.

Instead, McCain prefers to act like the British in the 1700's.  McCain's behavior is everything that George Washington opposed.
"The question before the American people is which candidate is best able to secure the peace for the next generation of Americans, a peace that will keep our nation safe, prosperous and free. Senator Obama's desire to meet unconditionally in his first year at the presidential level with Iranian leaders is reckless, and demonstrates poor judgment that will make the world more dangerous"

Typical repub headgames.   BOO!!!!

The only ones in being convinced by this argument are people who think the Iraq war was a good idea. As far as I can tell there aren't many independents or Democrats left in that boat.
If status quo foreign policy is working out so great, why are our foreign relations in the toilet? This isn't just a question for McCain and Republicans, but for everyone. What do they call it when you do the same thing over and over and expect different results?
Still, once again I say... There is nothing wrong with meeting these leaders.  They are LEADERS of different countries that WE have to acknowledge their exhistance.  We can not ignore them like McNutt seems to suggest and let them fly more planes into large hi-rises in our country and then ask WHY they did it.  Maybe I don't know this, but why is Israel the epi-center of the Middle East?  I understand they are our allie and we have interest over there, but they are also an independant nation that governs itself.  If they were attacked, I think that it should be the concern of NATO to handle, not just the US as was the case in Iraq.  We have to STOP thinking like we are untouchable and the tough guys...that is the sign of being a Bully.  Like all bullies in the world, it won't be too long until someone knocks you down.  Open the talks and find out what our differences are and if a diplomatic solution can be found.
Who are these very bad people McCain worked with other than all of those lobbyists on his staff?
"After Senator Obama's own advisers and supporters backtracked from his stated desire to hold summit meetings with the leaders of the world's worst regimes, Senator Obama himself has begun to reinterpret his stand," the Arizona senator said in a statement. "He now claims that some 'fear' to 'negotiate' with the likes of Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who has called Israel a 'stinking corpse' or Ayatollah Khamenei, who called Israel a 'cancerous tumor.' Any other questions?

Senate Quorum Call....Will the Senator from Illinois cast his vote please?

(oh Jeezz what do I do now)....ummm....PRESENT!!

Seriously,  any other questions?
I'm not worried about Iraq. We need to get out and focus on our OWN country.
Okay, Obama campaign. It is time to attack McCain about economics and healthcare.  What about the permanent tax cuts for the top 1%.  Spin this stuff back to the economy.

Stop falling for arguments that are McCain's strength. He is going to continue to attack on foreign policies.  Attack him on his weaknesses.

Vote democrat 08!!

That's right. We need peace so rather than talking, let's go fight a few wars. That shows great judgment.

Let's not have a third Bush term.
Obama/Hagel '08
Why first read is posting McCain's come back in full. You guys did not even post half of Obama's speech in Fl today?? what's up with this double standard?
Please if you want to be be true honest journalists, then give us the whole picture and not one half.
Here is my prediction for the 2008 election:
Obama WILL win, despite all the plotters. He has our power, the POWER OF THE PEOPLE, something very few people had before.
I say declare war with all of them and take them out completely.  If we do that, then we don't have to talk to them at all and we don't have to argue about it anymore.

What was it I said?  No seriously what did I say? [Joe Lieberman whispers in my ear] That's right, bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran!
"Obama is a liar, and he is full of crap.
LIFELONG DEMOCRAT & MILITARY VET WHO WONT SELL OUT TO OBAMA (Sent Wednesday, May 21, 2008 3:53 PM)"

Whoa - way to make your point.  Just state something dogmatically and don't back up any of your views.  Nice.  Debate class must've been fun for you too?
What a choice. Go with existing policy under McCain or don't go with the existing policy under Obama and his wealth of seasoned advisors.
Obama is right!! We'd be better off with Saddam in a nuke race with Iran. Why can't you understand that? geesshhh
Senator McCain is absolutely incredible. Here is a man who is parroting the vision and policies of the "current resident" at one moment and the next speaking as if he has a coherent plan or policy for foreign policy the next. Imagining that staying the course of George II is anything but disasterous, is living in wonderland.
McCain, How many men and women need to die in Iraq before you admit that maybe your party is at fault?
And McCain and Bush have been right?  Please give me a solid example where.  Anyone, anyone?

At least Obama is willing to explore other avenues besides threats and bombing.  McCain can't even get the Sunnis and Shiites right and if he doesn't think it's important to learn enough about the enemy to learn who we are fighting then how can we be confident with anything that comes out of his mouth about who is being naive?

I hope McCain keeps this going because he is showing just how much of an idiot he is.
I think Hillary's pants are bigger than Al Gore's.  It just won't work.
He said the dynamics in Iraq would not change as a result of the 'surge.' He was wrong.

The dynamics of the war in Iraq as a result of the 'surge' has not changed. We paid the militia for a ceasefire...The same militia that was killing our soldiers before 'the surge"...that's not a plan!
Senator Obama told you not to drive the truck into the ditch!!
Only an IDIIOOT will say that Obama was consistently worng on Iraq.

McCain's vote for IRAQ WAR equates to :

McCain's Judgement = ZERO
McCain's Vision = ZERO

I have just proved: McCAIN IS an OLD_FOOL with ZERO Judgment and ZERO Vision.
errr Senator McCain Iran is an Islamic Republic and not a Democracy....Iranian President Ahmadinejad is in charge of NOTHING under the Constitution of Iran he must answer to the ruling clerics on every decision of state.  FYI "Old Man Yells at Cloud"
Talk first, then shoot if we must.

Shoot first, then make excuses and shift the blame.

Your choice. Vote in November.
"Senator Obama has consistently offered his judgment on Iraq, and he has been consistently wrong."

WTF

70 or 80 something percent of Americans dont support this war.  And before you even utter the word "so" out of your lying horrible mouth, I ask you:Who has been wrong McCain?  the last time I heard (I suspect they are not announcing these grim statistics anymore) the average age of the soldiers dying in Iraq was around 24.  24!!! (My co-worker just turned 24, a lovely young woman in the PRIME of her life.) There have been over 4000 American deaths (not to mention other nationalities) in Iraq and yet America gains nothing but debt.
I'm willing to take my chances with an idealistic upstart who'll try diplomacy first as opposed to a hard-nosed establishment-type who'll shoot first & ask questions later.
