Despite absence, McCain battles Obama

IRVINE, CA -- Today, McCain's pick for "Person of the Year" -- Gen. David Petraeus -- was appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, of which the Arizona senator serves as the ranking member. Also, a GI bill that McCain actively debated came to the Senate floor and was passed as part of a larger war-spending bill.

But while Obama and Clinton both left the campaign trail to return to Hill, McCain happens to be in, well, California, where (among other things) he's attending a town hall with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A McCain spokesman said the Arizona senator's absence was due simply to a scheduling conflict. "We have a schedule that is set far in advance," spokesman Brian Rogers said. (Per a Senate Armed Services press release, the Petraeus hearing was scheduled eight days ago, on May 14.)

But McCain's absence didn't stop the Arizona senator from sparring with Obama over an education bill authored by Sen. Jim Webb, a Vietnam vet who might be a possible Obama veep pick.

McCain, a fellow vet, tried to amend that bill last week after raising objections to the Webb plan, which offers education benefits to service members that would be so attractive that some Republicans (including McCain and President Bush) were worried that the Armed Forces would face declining retention rates as a result. McCain's version failed after being tabled by the Senate last week. But today, the Webb measure passed as part of a larger domestic spending bill.

On the Senate floor today, Obama blasted McCain's opposition to the Webb bill. "I respect Sen. John McCain's service to our country. He is one of those heroes of which I speak. But I can't understand why he would line up behind the President in his opposition to this GI Bill. I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the president more on this issue. There are many issues that lend themselves to partisan posturing but giving our veterans the chance to go to college should not be one of them."

McCain, however, shot back with this fiery response, which included a sharp jab at the fact that Obama didn't serve in the military.

"It is typical, but no less offensive that Sen. Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of," the Arizona senator said in a statement. "I know that my friend and fellow veteran, Sen. Jim Webb, an honorable man who takes his responsibility to veterans very seriously, has offered legislation with very generous benefits. I respect and admire his position, and I would never suggest that he has anything other than the best of intentions to honor the service of deserving veterans. Both Sen. Webb and I are united in our deep appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives so that the rest of us may be secure in our freedom."

McCain added, "And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Sen. Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did."

McCain is an elitist hypocrit. When we consider all the perks, and benefits his Naval, and Senatorial service have afforded him, it is outrageous that he should stand in the gap forbiding a generous benefits package for his fellow servicepersons as well, who are currently risking their lives for his, Dubyah's, and Clinton's criminal war.
Wait a minute!

McCain is opposing the bill to better the veterans' lives because he understand what it takes to risk one's life for the country while Obama supports it because he never fought in wars and hence has no understanding of the sacrifice?

What is wrong with this old fool? Where is the logic?

Hey, McPain, not all veterans return to family and spousal fortune you cold bastard. Meanwhile your running mate, yes Dubya - the draft-dodging moron, never fought in wars either and you agree with all his dumb foreign policies.

Go home old fool.
"Im John McCain.  Since I served in the military I can tell you without a doubt that they do not want or need a free college education"  ---John McCain
TR on the Ickes post . I went to that link and yes it seems to be very acurate that is what The Clinton Camp is doing. She is mad because he told her Hell no The Dream wont Flow. To be Honest I am getting really sick of Johnny Boy McBush getting  free ride from the Media.  The only reporters with the Brass sets to call him on his junk are Chris Mathews, Keith Olbermann and Dan Abrams so good job MSNBC now it's time you guys call Hillary Clinton on her SH*t she is really starting to stink up the party. I guess her and her campaign dont understand that we voted for Obama because we are tired of the Politics of distorting the truth to fit a need, and if she was smart enough to see distortion like some of us are she would have never voted for the war in Iraq.So before I vote for Hillary if she is successful in stealing this nomination. I will give my foolish vote to the biggest fool of them all Ralph Nader.
McCain did you forget your GI benefits have been  generous to you; or did you forget to take your Ginkyo for your memory?

This action is more reason for changing the current regime.

Forget the presidency too, McCain.

Obama 2009-2016
Hey, Obama, get off my lawn!!
All that self-righteous temerity and yet no e3xplanation as to why McCain isn't there to vote to support the troops....
Congress will reject the Jim Webb GI Bill. The reason
is simple. Jim Webb is a DEMOCRAT!

McCain is just showing how little he is by taking pot
shots at Obama. He's probably still bent because his
GI Bill idea got shot down.

BTW- has anybody read the article about the Hillary
supporter who tried to bribe the Young Democrats of
America with a mill to support Hillary?

Why are the remaining SD's not endorsing Obama? I've
got a few ideas.

SD's--- if Hillary is allowed to steal this Dem nom,
the Democrat Party is finished.

I am not even going to respond on Ikes earlier Obama
gets no delegates in MI bullsh*t!

Obama '08
McCain's backhanded compliment to Webb constrasts starkly with his insult to Obama -- I can't think that this was unintentional-- as well as completely unworthy of someone like John McCain.  Is this an example of the famous McCain temper?

His rants and ravings scare me. How would he react to an enemy nation challenging his authority?
The Democrats are willing to sacrifice the election. Good job superpussies.

I can't understand why John McCain believes , Obama and Jim Webb's GI Bill is too generous. I'm a ' War Vet ' myself and this country ask a lot of its men and women to go to war for.

To die , leave a family , come back to be manacled in some cases , mangled and psychologically spent.

McCain better take his head out of his duffle bag and act like he knows what's up.
I personally take exception to McCain's war record.

Firstly, prior to being shot down and captured he was awarded medals every General or Admirals son would have been awarded in a time of war. I doubt seriously if they were actually earned. Maybe they were but I've seen it happen to other mediocre progeny (Patton's son to name one) so it's not a stretch to believe it happened in his case.

Secondly, he refused an unconditional release by his captures, denying valuable intel to his leaders regarding conditions, his fellow prisoners and quite possibly the location where they were being held. His duty was to escape and I think an unconditional release qualifies.

Get off the hero stuff! He was no Audie Murphy! He served, he got a multi-million dollar plane shot out from under him and he was captured. Not a stellar performance by any measure.
So McCain:

In all that bellicose you didn't answer. Why wouldn't you support Webb's Bill.

Don't let him get away with this Bull Obama. Who cares if McCain served in the military and was a prsioner of war. That does not make him right or approrpaite for the Presidency. Don't let them play this "you were not in the military" garbage on you.

Is McCain therefore saying that all males and females in this country who do not and did not serve in the military are second class citizens or that they should take a back seat to him on what we feel our country should do for veterans simply because he did serve at one time. That's BS and everyone knows it.

You might respond Obama by saying no, I did not serve in the military but I was raised by a single mother which is something you would not understand McCain or know anything about, and thererofore I understand how important it is to help people in need at certain times i ntheir lives including returning vets with their college education.
As a former military enlisted veteran. You have to understand John McCain's stance since he was a military officer.  Officers make very good money as compared to the regular joe blow enlisted person.  To be an officer you have to have a bachelors degree or higher.  To be an enlisted person, you just basically have to have graduated from high school and not have too much trouble with the law..  So if you actually allow enlisted personnel to become educated, then they will realize how much they are being taken advantage of for the sacrifice they make.  I mean I don't consider John McCain a hero.  He had a cake walk compared to the men (during his time)on the ground or actually doing the real work.. He flew a frickin aircraft..  He probably crashed and was taken captive.  Not that he was on the ground in a jungle somewhere, i mean give me a frickin break.. he is a joke..
McCain is just upset because he made a doody in his Depends and Cindy was too busy shopping in Beverly Hills to change him.
In the last election, a genuine war hero, John Kerry, was smeared by supporters of George Bush. They said it didn't matter ole' George never saw combat. This year, we are supposed to obey "General" McCain because he suffered as a POW during the Vietnam War. I respect John McCain's service, unlike the Swiftboaters who smeared Kerry, but I don't think his service automatically qualifies him for the Presidency.
