McCain: Ditching Hagee and Parsley

Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008 9:19 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Post previews the release of McCain’s medical records. "Sen. John McCain's 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam undoubtedly changed the course of his life. But now that he is 71, that remote trauma seems unlikely to shorten his life span or to lead to mental or physical conditions that are not already apparent. That is the implication of a body of research on the lifetime effects of captivity and war trauma and the anecdotal experience of the small group of naval aviators imprisoned with McCain at the notorious ‘Hanoi Hilton.’”

More: "The most obvious effect of McCain's captivity is in his arms. He broke both of them and a leg after ejecting from his bomber in 1967. Inadequate treatment of the injuries, as well as torture by his captors in Hanoi, left him with a decreased range of motion in his arms -- evident in the shrugging appearance of his shoulders. At the prison, which received its sarcastic Hanoi Hilton nickname from the Americans held there, McCain was repeatedly beaten, bound and placed in prolonged solitary confinement."

"Sen. John McCain on Thursday repudiated the presidential endorsement of the Rev. John Hagee after learning about a sermon in which the megachurch pastor from San Antonio declared that God allowed the rise of Adolf Hitler because it resulted in returning Israel to the Jewish people,” the Washington Post writes. "Mindful of the controversy that ensnarled Sen. Barack Obama, his possible opponent in the November election, McCain tried to draw a distinction between his link to Hagee and Obama's ties to the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who was the pastor for many years of the church Obama attends in Chicago. Wright's incendiary remarks about the U.S. government have dogged the Democratic front-runner for months.

"I have said I do not believe Senator Obama shares Reverend Wright's extreme views," McCain said in the statement. "But let me also be clear, Reverend Hagee was not and is not my pastor or spiritual advisor, and I did not attend his church for twenty years." He added: "I have denounced statements he made immediately upon learning of them, as I do again today."

The Los Angeles Times: "McCain, who is viewed with suspicion by many conservatives in the Republican Party, had actively sought endorsements from evangelicals. He has had a rocky relationship with evangelical leaders, notably calling Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell ‘agents of intolerance’ in the 2000 presidential campaign."

Just asking: Did McCain's anxiousness about evangelical support allow him to not vet these pastors? Did his campaign's lack of experience with dealing with some of these evangelical folks allow these folks to slip through the cracks?

On the eve of the release of hundreds of pages of his medical records, McCain fired off a particularly deep dig at Obama’s age and experience, NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann reports. "For a young man with very little experience, he's done very well," the senator from Arizona jibed at a rally in Stockton, CA. "So I appreciate -- with his very, very great lack of experience and knowledge of the issues -- he's been very successful."

For the second day in a row, the Washington Post examines the lobbying career of a McCain supporter and volunteer with the last name of Black -- specifically, Charlie Black's wife, Judy Black. "His wife, Judy Black, is a national co-chair of the fundraising group ‘Women for McCain,’ and she has a vibrant lobbying practice that includes a foreign client and several companies with business before the Senate Commerce Committee, where McCain is a senior member.”

“Judy Black works at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a firm that earned $12.9 million in lobbying fees last year. She is listed as an agent of Dubai Aerospace Enterprises, whose partners include the government of Dubai, according to forms filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Since 2004, she has also represented telecomunications companies AT&T and Global Crossing Ltd., which have matters before the Commerce Committee. At one point on the campaign trail, Charles Black joked with reporters that deciding to leave behind his lucrative lobbying practice and volunteer full time for McCain left him to seek an allowance from his wife."

More: “Judy and Charles Black have complied with the policies, according to a senior McCain campaign aide who requested anonymity because he is not permitted to make public comments. Judy Black is one of ‘hundreds of people’ who are both lobbyists and volunteers, the spokesman said."

The Washington Post also editorializes on this anti-lobbyist purge going on with both McCain and Obama. "The McCain campaign has been tossing overboard a lobbyist a day to comply with an anti-lobbyist policy written by, yes, its lobbyist-turned-campaign manager. The Obama campaign seized on the issue to portray the McCain campaign as bought and paid for by lobbyists, then found itself under fire for having a looser policy than the McCain campaign when it comes to lobbyists who volunteer for campaign work. This is, as we suspect both candidates know, a silly exercise. Lobbyists are a symptom of a larger problem that can't be fixed by turning them into political pariahs. The real problem is the distorting influence on public policy of moneyed interests; lobbyists are merely a particularly efficient delivery vehicle for the money that candidates need to satisfy their fundraising habits. The most effective cure would be to free lawmakers of this addiction by providing for public financing of campaigns, a solution that is, admittedly, a long way off."

The Hill notes how McCain could benefit if some troops, as Gen. Petraeus promised, are  withdrawn from Iraq before November. "Petraeus, the top U.S. general in Iraq, told the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday that he expects in September to recommend additional reductions in U.S. troop levels in Iraq before he takes over Central Command, where he will oversee troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He did not specify how large the cuts would be, but is expected to offer another assessment on Iraq troop levels about a month before the presidential election."

After making his presence known in the presidential race last week during his visit to Israel, the Wall Street Journal reports that Bush plans to keep quiet and stay out of the campaign as much as possible.

What a shocker. Never thought McCain would diss the evangelical right like this. Or is a temporary bout of political gamesmanship? Likely...

http://www.political-buzz.com/
The Hagee thing is disappointing.

Hagee says something offensive about Catholics, and that's okay. But when someone finds a clip about Hitler and Jews, then McCain rejects his endorsement?

Someone should remind McCain that while the Jewish vote is significant in Florida, the Catholic vote is significant in something like 30 states. Nationally, nearly one out of four votes will be cast by a Catholic.
Rev. Hagee has his right to dream up any crapola he wants..
Did his follower's money speak his mind...?
Maybe Hagee needs to retire...
As Christ said, "give all your money to the poor and follow me"...I don't think Hagee will do that..
there's an enormous need to feed the flock the teachings of Enoch...son of (Mc)Cain...(the one that killed his brother Able)
John McCain is an angry old jerk.  His policy, I know I'm old and I don't know anything, so I'll attack Obama.  Geez, he is just like Dick Cheney.  Wake up American, McCain is an incompetent politician who doesn't give a rip about anyone but himself and his perfect little blonde wife Cindy, who he chased around while still married.  The problem with McCain is he is stupid!  The lack of ability to have a dialouge or simple discussion will constantly remind people of Bush.  Um, I don't know the answer so I'll say something nasty about my apponent, because that way I won't have to answer the question.  McCain is no Regan, he is a combo of Cheney and Bush.  The worst two people to ever run this country.  When will the media start to actually cover his flip-flops, lack of knowledge on the economy, judgement, and everything else.  Probably never, becuase they look at him and say oh, he reminds me of my grandpa.  I can't be hard on him.  The media has sucked during this campaign.  You guys are doing about the same type of job on this as you did on the run up to the Iraq war.  You should all return your degrees and walk away ashamed!  It's like a bunch of highschool students spreading rumors and the greatest lines, but never asking the question is it true?
Hagee, and Parsley,

Now you know, hateful preachers that you are, that fire, and brimstone singes both ways.

So, how do like your behinds fried? Regular, or extra crispy?
It's about time that "Hypocrite" McCain rejects and denounces all of those evangelical christian lunatic fringe pastors that spew hate, especially all those gay bashing ones.  I get a big laugh at how screwed up Parsley is regarding why our country was founded.  Obviously he's clueless thinking our country was founded to battle Islam.  That is total blasphemy!

I think "Warmonger" McCain has to explain why he wasn't in Washington DC yesterday to vote on the Iraq funding and GI Bills.  He has no right dissing Obama about veteran's benefits when he can't bother to vote on the issue.  That Senate deadbeat can't even bother to show up for work to even bother to vote for our soldiers which shows just how much he doesn't care about our soldiers or vets.

Go Obama 08/12!
You know, fundamentally I am ready to move on from Hagee and Wright but I can't help but note that Obama got very heavy-handed treatment from ALL quarters about Wright whereas a lot of it are tired of all the distracting CRAP by now and so McCain may get close to a free ride on Hagee.

It just seems like business as usual with the Republicans getting away with acting like they are morally superior (a notion to which I reject).  But clearly we all should pivot on the CRAP issues and go to more substantial ones so we move on.  I give the Dems the high road on this one.  We all know where the Republican 527s will go.

Obama for our best future.
He actively courted these spiritual terrorists for their endorsement, so that their radical extremist supporters would help propel him into power.

McCain should be embarrassed to death to have sought any association with these men.  Didn't he say that he would not meet with rogues or terrorists?

Liar.

Political Hack general Betray-Us is doing nothing but playing politics trying to make his surge look like it's working.  To now say he thinks that some troops may be able to pull out around September is nothing but pure politics and a big lie to help the repugnant ones in November.

What happens if around the time our surge brigades pull out and things blow up bad during the hot summer months in Iraq as they're likely to be?  Why does no one mention that part of the reduced violence is due to General Winter when things quiet down in Iraq every winter?  Notice how they're heating up again as the weather turns warmer.

Go Obama 08/12!
Lobbyist scum like the Black's is why so many of us hate the repugnant ones for how they've wrecked our democracy.  That is why Barack Obama will beat "Lobbyist Lover" McCain.

Time to take back Washington DC for the regular Americans.  Time for the rich and greedy to stop getting all the breaks they just don't deserve.

Go Obama 08/12!
McCain has made a big mistake here and it will hurt him in November. He should have done what Reagan did - not explicitly seek the endorsement of any religious whack job. That way you aren't forced to reject them later on - an act that is far more damaging than the endorsement itself. Expect the already flaccid enthusiasm of the GOP base to be suppressed further. With Bob Barr added to the mix and he may have no choice but add Mike Huckabee to the ticket.
Thank you Paul that is my thoughts as well. The thing that cracks me up is the medias excuse for McBush , it was not the same relationship as Obama. True it was not, that is why it is sad that McBush took so long to distance himself from these clowns. I am a Christian and I find these guys deeply offensive. I also dont believe that McBush or Obama should be held to the words of someone else. I have had pastors that I did not agree with but still attended the church.
Mccain is a fraud and a hypocrite.
What took him so long? By the way I am looking forward to how the media are going to cover McCain's pastor issue. Are they going to apply the same standard?

Again, the media are being bias when it comes to the treatment of McCain. He sought the endorsement for a year by courting the evangelical despite their radical views. McCain not only sought Hagee's endorsement but share his views.

The question we should be asking McCain is, what took him so long? Why did he seek the endorsement in the first place? How about his judgment when it comes to whom he associate himself with?

Lobbyist who represents dictator is running McCain’s campaign. How can we trust him when he has lobbyist running his campaign? Why didn’t McCain voted for the GI bill? If he cares about Military indeed, why did he not support the GI bill?

Uh... why does the title mention Rev Rod Parsley? He still accepts his endorsement, even though Parsley verbally attacks the religin and nation of Islam.

Correct this immediately, please. It is a fallacy.
Am I missing something?  Nowhere in the article can I find mention of McCain denouncing Parsley (whom he has referred to in the past as his spiritual advisor), as stated in the headline. Time to update the article?
Um, where does this article mention Parsley being denounced???
Hmmmmm, wonder why Senator McCain couldn't take his lumps like a man without trying to deflect back to the Rev. Wright saga?

He needs to take RESPONSIBILITY for the choice HE made to get in the bed with two well know right wing zealots in a cynical effort to win votes. That is what LEADERS do.

The more I learn about Senator McCain, the more it seems like he is not at all like the image he has worked so hard to create.
mccain is too old and unstable to be president.
Lenny Bruce once said that any preacher with more than one suit is a fraud.  McWar and his minions are all charlatans!
To compare the Pastor Hagee situation to the Rev. Wright situation is absurd.  McCain had no personal relationship with the guy and didn't sit there for 20 years listen to him spew hate and intolerance.  Obama may have repudiated the guy, but he's yet to offer a decent explanation of how he listened to him for two decades plus.
Come on FirstRead...he has not denounced Parsley as far as I can tell.  Let's update now, please.  Shoddy journalism
Well, well, well, it looks like the neocon attack ads on President Obama will be futile. Move-On is going to have a field day with the old man in the GE. The old man has managed to erode whatever support that he may have gotten from catholic as well as jewish voters. Simply put.....the old man has a REAL PROBLEM!

If McCain is to old then Obama is too young and Obama has no experience. He would be just like Bush.Obama speaks like some preachers no details.

So with his associations to right-wing nut-job pastors, McCain has alienated Catholics and Jews here in America. The world Islamic press is already railing that McCain will be treating Muslims fairly if he becomes president. What about the millions of Muslim-Americans right here?
***Please remove Parsley's name, his name is nowhere in the article and McCain has not denounced him.

I guess we have to wait until Parsley is caught on tape saying something about "people who matter" to John McCain before he denouces him.
There was not one, but THREE flame throwing pastors that McCain associated himself with.  Does everyone forget him giving a commencement speech at Liberty University to appease Falwell who is also a agent of intolerance until he died?

I can't fathom how Wright got two months of coverage (and still comes up repeatedly in conversation), plus a 1 hour special on MSNBC, but McCain going out of his way to associate with equally vile men (on THREE ocassions) doesn't even get covered for a full segment on most of your shows.

The first excuse was that these guys didn't have sound bites (which was proven false).  Then the excuse was that McCain wasn't members of their church, when Parsley was his spiritual mentor even though Wright was never Obama's.  Now it's basically the media giving John McCain the benefit of the doubt and somehow the nation cares more about his health records.

What's the difference between Parsley screaming hate-filled things into a camera and Wrigth screaming hate-filled things into a camera.....other than their race?

Its good that McCain (eventually) denounced Hagee after the clip about Hitler and Jews surfaced. However, there are a millions of votes to be casted by Catholics and Muslims who are dismayed that clips insulting them and their religion did not move Senator McCain to denounce those who made such comments and who McCain actively sought.

PS: I also couldn’t find the article mentioning Parsley being denounced – why the incorrect title??

Again, a clear sign that Americans ARE as fickle as the europeans and others think. So many of you are dumb enough to follow Billary and Osbama all the way to the gas chamber. I think McCain made a terrible mistake in denouncing these Pastor's endorsement without listening to their entire comments and not just a brief sound bite. American politics have gone to the 30 second bite. Nothing else matters. No one wants to do any deeper research- guess that would take some work. So fickle.
dude, eric, give it a rest. you're just as hateful as those you say are the most hateful. tolerance is a two way street. if you aren't going to say anything meaningful or constructive, then don't even post. your remarks have grown very tiresome.
[Political Hack general Betray-Us ...
Eric, Salinas, CA]
--Interesting choice there.  I kind of thought the Betray-Us/Petraeus juxtaposition was a clever play-on words.  However, I can certainly understand and agree with the point that calling the main General a traitor during a time of war goes far too far--unless he truly was treasonous, which no sane person would accuse Gen. Petraeus of.

--It is also an interesting choice to call somebody (Obama) an 'appeaser' from foreign soil (G.W. Bush).  People make all sorts of false connections (Wright/Hagee), but these are actually akin.  And both sides think they are correct to make such statements but that both statements are not fair to be lobbed at their respective side.  I find it all very curious.

"He did not specify how large the cuts would be, but is expected to offer another assessment on Iraq troop levels about a month before the presidential election."
--Oh look at the timing.  Coincidence, maybe ...  It does, however, seem like General Petraeus might be somewhat in bed with the politicians.  I don't know.
I guess these preachers see someting in McShame that they like and fells he must have the same thoughts.
Exactly where would McCain be if he did not have his war record, would he be senator? Dont't be fooled by the hype !!!!!!!!!!!
