Hillary invokes RFK assassination

Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008 4:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
This might not help the Hillary-for-veep chatter... The New York Post writes, "Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama. 'My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it,' she said, dismissing calls to drop out."

"Clinton made her comments at a meeting with the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader's editorial board while campaigning in South Dakota, where she complained that, 'People have been trying to push me out of this ever since Iowa.'"

Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded to Clinton's remarks. "Senator Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign."

NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli notes that Clinton said something similar the day after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries. "Sometimes you gotta calm people down a little bit. But if you look at successful presidential campaigns, my husband did not get the nomination until June of 1992," she said. "I remember tragically when Senator Kennedy won California near the end of that process."

In fact, the specter of assassination was first raised in this campaign on January 8, when a Clinton introducer, a retired teacher from New Hampshire, brought it up before Clinton spoke. "If you look back, some people have been comparing one of the other candidates to JFK, and he was a wonderful leader. He gave us a lot of hope," the retired teacher said. "But he was assassinated, and Lyndon Baines Johnson actually did all of his work and got both the Republicans and Democrats to pass those measures."

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithe just said to a group of reporters in South Dakota -- including Memoli -- that this is "one of the more ridiculous" issues that has come up in a long race. The campaign, he said, will soon send out an official comment.

*** UPDATE *** Here is the official statement from Elleithe: "She was simply referencing her husband in 1992 and Bobby kennedy in 1968 as historical expmales of the nominating contest going well into the summer. Any, any reading into it beyond that is inaccurate."

*** UPDATE *** Here is what Clinton said in a quick avail: "I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation, particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever. My view is that we have to look to the past and to our leaders who have inspired us and give us a lot to live up to and I'm honored to hold sen. Kennedy's seat in the United States Senate in the state of New York, and have the highest regard for the entire Kennedy family."

OK, I have been trying to give the Clintons the benefit of the doubt, but this bit of insanity does it for me.

please make them stop.
OMG!  Do any of you Clinton supporters have a defense to this???  This woman isn't just immoral--she's AMMORAL!!!
NOTE:  To Clinton's chagrin, there is VIDEO of her making this invocation which will be playing all weekend long on this long family weekend.  YOu can get the video on the Arbus Leader website and, soon, I am sure, on YouTube
It is ridiculous Mo Elleithe, saying that Clinton should stay in because you know other candidates have been assassinated before the convention.  This is sick that Hilliary Clinton would even raise this as a reason for her to stay in the race.  She has gone absolutely crazy!
Is this real? This woman is....I don't know what to say. The DNC....What! This is unbelievable. END THIS NOW!
Are you kidding me?  Please have someone escort this woman to the nearest exit.
This is not a "ridiculous issue"  and the fact that they can say that with a straight face should give anyone pause.

When do the superdelegates step in?   This has become a nightmare, in my opinion

How can she go any lower?  SD's, wake up!   She needs to be put into a straight jacket, strapped to a stretcher, and wheeled feet first to the nearest psychiatric facility.   This woman needs to be put away and now....Please!!

I HATE HER
Every time I think she can't stoop any lower, I am proven wrong. Hillary Clinton is despicable. The SuperDelegates new to quit being such cowards and endorse Obama now.

If this doesn't shut up all those people claiming  an Obama/Hillary ticket is a "dream ticket" then nothing will.

It is absolutely disgusting that Hillary would try to use the assassination of RFK to advance her already pathetic arguments, likely requiring a response from the Kennedy family, especially in light of what they are already going through.

She is either a truly vile human being, or she needs mental help.

WHAT A STATEMENT

THIS IS HOW SHE REALLY FEELS

I HATE HER

How can she go any lower?  SD's, wake up!   She needs to be put into a straight jacket, strapped to a stretcher, and wheeled feet first to the nearest psychiatric facility.   This woman needs to be put away and now....Please!!
That is just flat-out scary. I guess we're finally seeing the "real Hillary."

She keeps that up, she may have to watch her own back in NY.
shameless
Hey Patty, what's your retort to this one!?
I do have to agree with the Obama campaign.  How does this really come into the campaign?  Have there been any viable threats against Senator Clinton?  If there have, don't encourage more.
Hillary has lost it.  Bi-polar disorder .. anyone?
Simply Shameless.
My God, she has no shame. No way in hell should be anywhere associated with Obama's campaign. She needs to be escorted to her room, and given her meds.
Domenico and Mark I came on looking for you guys to write this one up and please forgive me !! That B&tch has lost her F*c*ng mind. She is basically trying to invoke some moron to carry out her wishes. For her to even go there is unreal and uncalled for, even if that is the reason she is staying in she should not have broadcast such a statement. I will say this once and for all Hell No She Should Not Be His Vice President. With her making that statement I do believe that he would have to have a cup bearer food taster and a body double with her demented behind in the VP slot. Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton and all of the Clinton Campaign should be ashamed to have a candidate that will do and say and imply anything to get elected, knowing this man has had death threats.    Obama 08
Senator Obama you are in the prayers of me, my family and friends may god protect you and your family.
This is unreal.

"Hand the nomination to me, even though I can't win, because you know the black guy's going to get shot."

The Clintons have done and said enough insulting things throughout this campaign to keep me from ever supporting any member of their family in any political endeavor for the rest of my life. This is abhorrent. The supers need to shove her out of this race, now.
It's official, Hillary Clinton is the devil. She has no shame, no integrity, and will stoop to anything to win. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE make her stop. If you don't stop now we will really begin to get nasty. I'll fire the first shot.BADLY STAINED NAVY BLUE DRESS.
Just when you think it can't get any sillier, this self-centered woman goes and tops herself again! No SNL parody could ever be this sharp and this true!
I compare Silly Hillie to Humpty Dumpty...except Humpty was a nicer person.  Humpty wouldn't ever use his supporters anger and buzz out sexism as the reason for getting tumbled when in fact the other candidate just happens to be extraordinary and has simply run a better race.  Silly Hillie used to have my respect, Humpty still does.
I am becoming increasingly concerned that she is trying to steal the nomination with the ties and connections she and her husband have established over the last 16 years.  However, I take some solace in my belief that Senator Obama is savvy enough to be able to short circuit any attempts to overturn the will of the people.  Her most recentcomments are only the latest in a series of very unfortunate developments.
Clearly, Hillary Clinton should NOT be on anyone's list as a possible VP.
Her rapid descent into irrationality disqualifies her for the presidency, and perhaps even holding her Senate seat. I have had enough of this horrible, amoral woman. It's time for the SuperDelegates to shut her up and sit her down. She no longer deserves a place on the stage. She's one of the crazies now.
If the Dem Leaders do not step in now I will have lost the last bit of respect I have had for any of them.

This is an utterly unbelievable statement from Hillary. I'm still sitting back in my chair staring at the screen in amazement. This cannot go on!

And don't any of you Clinton supporters even dare try and defend her on this one. She has lost it!
That thud is the sound of my jaw dropping.
Anything to stay in the news cycle. Unreal. Truly, unreal.

Oh my... sad.

I have been trying to be nice to her lately on my blog and with my comments but she really needs to stop.
Anything referencing the assassinations that the United States has faced generates a strong emotional response in the public. It goes without saying, that a lot of people are very worried about Obama's safety. To not recognize that the American public hasn't yet completely healed from the assassinations of the 1960s is to be out of touch with the pulse of voters. Since Hillary is very savvy, her comment makes one wonder whether she did have ulterior motives.
This woman is SICK, absolutely SICK....

For her to bring up with no conscience the assassination of RFK and compare it to the possibility of Obama as a reason for staying in the race is absolutely horrible.  I am literaly sick to my stomach because of her words.
ABSOLUTELY REPULSIVE.

It is inconceivable that she would not be aware of the implications of a statement like this. The issue of Obama's safety has been widely discussed and pondered, and for her to make a comment like that, and use the notion of his possible assassination as a justification for her to stay in the race, is just beyond reprehensible.

I'm shocked right now. Shocked.
Sociopath!!
The Clintons went over the line a long time ago, this is just a reminder.

WELL, WELL WE TOLD YOU CLINTON PEOPLE WE TRIED TO TELL YOU!  I GUESS SHE WILL NOT BE GETTING THE V.P. SPOT NOW!
I don't think that Sen. Clinton was suggesting or encouraging anyone to attempt assasination against Sen. Obama, but the fact the she has twice used this "historical" example of a prolonged nominating contest shows that she has considered this a possible way for her to be nominated.  I'm sure the thought process if something like, well I'll stay in the race so that is he gets assasinated I'm positioned to step into his place.  To me, it is the ultimate in calculated, cold ambition for power to consider your opponent's possible assasination in your future planning.  I become more uncomfortable with her by the hour.
SHE'S SUM AS SIMPLE AS THAT COME ON SUPERS SEND THEM PACKING!!!!!
What a disgrace to the Democrate party and all the people who has rallied behind Hillary. Shame on You HILLARY. The Leaders of the Democratic party should be outrage now with that comment to invoke the death of some, so you can get the nomination is the lowest any human being can go. Then again Hillary has no ethic, so that is expected of her.
this is so incredibly bad...if the DNC does NOT censure her NOW...oh God...she's insighting a lunatic to make her case for presidency based on the assasination of her competitor?! i swear, if i didn't know better, i'd swear she was still a republican dressed in a democrat's clothes...she's trying to KILL the party that made her husband...retribution for Monica? who the f cares...IF this is the behavior of a woman scorned, i'd rather she just torch his precious library and leave the rest of us to reconstructing our country...WITHOUT HER OR HER MAN.
How dare her bring up Bobby Kennedy's assassination.  She is beyond pathetic.  This is especially hurtful after this week's announcement that Teddy Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.
She should be reported to the FBI.
Hillary's new campaign slogan..."Like a vulture over a dead body, I'll be ready on day one"

Given the Kennedy family's recent tragedy, she has the nerve to make this insensitive statement today?

Come on Clinton supporters, explain this one away with some logic.

Super-delegates, wake up and get rid of this monster.
maybe this is her way of conceding that Obama has beaten her.
this statement is not new to the Hillary campaign, her bloggers continually reference these kind of remarks and worse.. She has not silenced them and now she is repeating those suggestive remarks..This woman is absolutely losing it...When she was called a monster, she was wrathful and had the person who said that be made to step down...can you imagine the hell that would rain down if this were said in reference to her..Please DNC...End this insanity.
What a despicable human being you are hillary. Enough is enough already. Now super delegates should have her evicted. We hope Obama never picks her as a VP that will be his biggest mistake.
She is sick and should be removed from the public view.  Why anyone would want such a lunatic within 100 miles of the White House is beyond me.  I literally think she has lost all sense of judgment and should be taken away to a rest home.
Basically there is a REDNECK Manchurian Candidate out there, and he was just given the go-ahead.
I thought I misread the statement, I just couldn't fathom that she would even go there!  Wow.  The fact that she felt okay saying that, even remotely suggesting that assassination of a presidential contender could create an opportunity for another, its just flabbergasting!  This woman has no regard for anything but her own ugly ambition, at any cost.
