Obama's 'Auschwitz' mistake

Posted: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 5:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The right-wing blogs have been abuzz over Obama's comments yesterday, at a town hall in New Mexico, that his uncle had helped liberate concentration camps, and was among the “first American troops” at Auschwitz. The blogs and the Republican National Committee have hit Obama hard, criticizing him for not knowing his history -- that the Soviets, not the Americans, liberated Auschwitz.

The Obama camp admits the mistake, saying Obama meant Buchenwald, not Auschwitz. “Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II -- especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said. “Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically.”

Here is what Obama said, while talking about post-traumatic stress disorder afflicting veterans, per NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum: “I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps, and the story in our family was is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn’t leave the house for six months, right. Now obviously something had really affected him deeply but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain. That’s why you know the, this idea of making sure that every single veteran when they are discharged are screened for post traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need, that’s why its so important.”

And here's video.

The RNC wrote this in response: “Barack Obama’s dubious claim is inconsistent with world history and demands an explanation. It was Soviet troops that liberated Auschwitz, so unless his uncle was serving in the Red Army, there’s no way Obama’s statement yesterday can be true. Obama’s frequent exaggerations and outright distortions raise questions about his judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief.”

The RNC also provides a link to the Holocaust Museum to show the Soviets liberated Auschwitz.

But in its statement today, the Obama campaign said the candidate’s great uncle, who the campaign says was his grandmother’s brother, was a member of the 89th Infantry Division, which liberated Ohrdruf, a subcamp of Buchenwald. The campaign also provides a link to the U.S. Holocaust Museum, but this a description of the 89th Infantry’s part. It also provided a separate link to the 89th’s role here.

Republican geography:

One mole hill = one mountain

What else have they got ?

John McCain, endless war
Typical Obama. He just reads what ever Soros or Moveon tells him to read.
Man, if this is all they've got--this is gonna be a cakewalk!!!
Obama is a liar - -- Anyway the wind blows

It is no secret the people he likes to have around him are racists and haters.

He has LOST THE JEWISH VOTE!!

He is grasping at straws.
Obama will just brush off his shoulders and say this happened a long time ago, and who really cares anyway.
Okay, it's been substantiated so lets move on. It's ashame hardly anyone ran the story about all of the lobbyists managing McSame's campaign, but let there be one little mispeak on Sen. Obama's part and all hell breaks loose.
How desperately petty can you get?

NOw this is a misspeak and it came with a quick unequivocal apology and correction with the facts and not with any "its someone elses fault i got it wrong" or "its someone elses fault they are upset at this small lapse that no one should care about ..."

If we are playing that game, why not replay dear old Joe Lieberman coaching Mr. McCain ... and then watch the clips of him repeating the mistake AFTER HE WAS CORRECTED!

Woops ...

Can you say...grasping at straws?  I knew you could.  Let's see how much Fixed News replays this...and what type of negative spin they can use. You know..."FIX News Network" ?...where a newsperson...purposely stated that both Osamma (BinLaden) and Obama should both be shot.  Now there is professional, humanistic new reporting.
There goes the RNC again. Confusing Obama with facts.
The DNC is trying to elect this joker Obama president. He will use a teleprompter thought his entire presidency if elected. Thank God he doesn't stand a chance against McCain
Ah ha! This is hilarious.

Perhaps the RNC and those blogger dolts should be more concerned that their nominee doesn't understand current events, like the difference between Shia and Sunni.

If this is the best they have, Obama's going to crush McCain.
Further proof that the Obama Trauma doesn't know what he is talking about. He accused Hillary. Now he stands accused.
Ah yes...continue to deflect GOP. The fact is that Obama's uncle served bravely, liberated a Nazi concentration camp and came home with PTSD. That Obama named the wrong concentration camp does not change the fact that Obama supports the care of our veterans and Bush/McCain don't care what happens to them once they're no longer part of the military apparatus.

And let's be honest...this isn't even close to confusing Sunni with Shiite.
Where was Lie berman when he needed him?
Damn good reason not to vote for him. He does not know the difference between Auschwitz and Buchenwald.
He made a mistake.  Buchenwald, Auschwitz; they were all atrocities against humanity.  A mistake like that I can accept as it's a historical mis-statement about something over 60 years ago.

Now, confusing Shia with Sunni as Sen McCain has done on at least 3 seperate occasions - well, that concerns me a lot more than Obama's WWII gaffe.

CUB FANS FOR OBAMA
Lets see, the choice is John McCain, War Hero, or Barack Obama, Total Zero. I pick the former!
Its funny that the Republican Party states that Obama needs to brush up on his history when they still believe that invading Iraq was a good foreign policy move.
another obama lie..........He probably had no idea anyone would have the "audacity" to check on his story
Yeah. Go after him on that.  It seems a bit much for it to have ended with Barack admitting a mistake.  Where does the RNC turn to now?
You call this news?
THE REPUGS ARE PATHETIC!

CAN'T TALK ABOUT ISSUES, BECAUSE THEY HAVE NONE!

HIS GRANDFATHER'S BROTHER WAS A HERO!

YOU REPUGS ARE THE REASON 4000+ MEN AND WOMEN SOLDIERS ARE DEAD!

DEAL WITH THAT FACT!
'...the Obama campaign has, for the first time, really, begun to bank delegates. Sources close to the campaign estimate that as many as three dozen Democratic superdelegates have privately pledged to announce their support for Obama on June 4 or 5..'

As many as 3 dozen....
(that's 36 for all you 'hard working' Clintonistas)

GAME OVER !!

Have fun at the convention Hillary !!

From Huff Post:

'...Obama Campaign Banks Superdelegates
27 May 2008 09:08 am

In June of 1984, the day after California handed Gary Hart a last-minute victory and New Jersey, thanks to Hart's having insulted the state, voted for Walter Mondale by 15 points, Tad Devine, Mondale's chief superdelegate counter, was ready. Worried that Mondale would not meet his pledge to end the primary season with a majority of delegates, Devine and his team made a "frantic" series of phone calls to undeclared party leaders; by noon, a few dozen superdelegates endorsed Mondale en masse, taking the wind of out Hart's campaign forever.

Neither the Clinton nor the Obama campaign is clear what the DNC's rules and bylaws committee will do on May 31; depending upon how or whether they re-allocate delegates, Obama could wind up within to 20 to 30 votes of the nomination -- a situation rectifiable by a piddling performance in Puerto RIco, South Dakota and Montana -- or more than 100 delegates short, requiring solid performances in those states plus a few dozen superdelegate endorsements to put him over the top.

To prepare for that eventuality, the Obama campaign has, for the first time, really, begun to bank delegates. Sources close to the campaign estimate that as many as three dozen Democratic superdelegates have privately pledged to announce their support for Obama on June 4 or 5. The campaign is determined that Obama not end the first week in June without securing the support of delegates numbering 2026 -- or 2210, as the case may be...'

John McCain, Endless War
Auschiwitz is not the only lie from Obama this weekend:

Obama Obfuscates on Chavez & FARC

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/obama_obfuscates_on_chavez_far.html
You guys actually dedicated that much space for THIS?

Pathetic. He mixes up Auschwitz for Buchenwald and the RNC thinks "raise questions about his judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief."

But John McCain frequently mixing up Sunni & Shi'ites is okay?

Hmm.. =/
>>> But in its statement today, the Obama campaign said the candidate’s great uncle, who the campaign says was his grandmother’s brother, was a member of the 89th Infantry Division, which liberated Ohrdruf, a subcamp of Buchenwald. Eh, Barack. John McCain served in the Vietnam War, was a war hero, and endured 5.5 years of torture to serve his country. Also, his son now serves in Iraq. So, rather then embarrass yourself like you did here, lets keep the fact that you haven't served this country in any real capacity to yourself.
Sorry OBAMABOTS, Obamas new marching orders for you are not going to work. Your messiah has not the experience nor the plan for this country of ours. McCain has shown to more centralized in his political career than almost all Republicans. He even considered once becoming a Democrat. The gig is up. Obama simply put is not qualified let alone his other issues.

I would also like to add that Obamabots continually try to post that all of the fatal flaws of Obama are okay and that all democrats are good with it. I have yet to find a living person who is aware of all of Obama's issues i.e. Rezko, Wright, Black liberation theology, Moss, Ayers, Hamas, Auchi, Faraquan, Members of MOI working on his campaign staff, Michelle, Sexist comments, bittergate, naftagate, aruglagate, sweetie x 2, Not proud x 2, meetings with Iran, and on and on and still supports the fella. Nice try once again Obama minions. These issues are a huge problem and do matter to the majority of TRUE BLUE DEMOCRATS and TRUE RED WHITE AND BLUE AMERICANS. Did I mention Obama has no experience worth mentioning? Hillary supporter for McCain.  Proud to be an AMERICAIN.
A candidate who cannot get elected is being nominated by a party that cannot be defeated, while a candidate who is eminently electable is running as the nominee of a party doomed to defeat.

In this environment, McCain can win by running to the center.
Perhaps the RNC is trying to detract from the core of what Obama was saying about his uncle's experience:

War is traumatic and leaves deep scars on our veterans.

And we have a whole new generation of traumatized young men and women as a result of the unnecessary war we are currently engaged in.

THAT is what we need to be paying attention to.
Boy oh boy do the RNC really have Obama in a tough spot or what?

NOT!  This is stupid.

So McCain is a 'politician of change' because he, the RNC, and their surrogates will attack anyone over everything?

This is more Bush/Rove politics, and not surprisingly - most of McWar's people worked for Bush at some point in the past 7 years, the ones that didn't, worked as lobbyists on behalf of foreign dictatorships like Mayanamar.  Quality folks McBush has surrounded himself with.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.....HEY ERIC V in TEXAS:

What is the connection between Soros and Obama, name one concrete fact that they have ever even associated with eachother?
"I had a uncle who was one of the..." -- Obama

Haahaha.
Caught in the lie. Obama's mom was an only child.
Obama knows all about fundraisers that closed to the press. That's when his 'bitter' comment originated, and all the white middle-class voters exited his campaign.

Donna Sumners, San Jose CA (Sent Tuesday, May 27, 2008 5:43 PM)

It was so closed to the press that they got audio from it.

And white middle-class people are leaving his campaign. It's uneducated racists that were never there in the first place.
CitizenJ

_________

It was an Obama campaign worker that was upset with the tone of Obama's speech that leaked the audio to the press. I know, we're confusing you with facts.
My late father in law was part of Patton's Third Army and was one of the first to liberate Dachau.  The images haunted him for decades and it took about 40 years before he would speak of it to anyone.

As usual, the right wing missed the main point, and went for the minutae.
Obama has the cheapshot repub artists against the ropes, jabbin 'em, and landing big blows all the while. They hang in the corner reaching out to swat, and miss him with the weakest of punches, about once per round!

Obama, the heavyweight, is in the ring with a flyweight.

The bell won't save your sorry platform, wimp behinds.
You're going down.

If that's true, then Billary should fire her writers. Talk about inciting the dim bulbs she claims are her base. Uneductated, low income, like she's pandering to a certain group, you think?
Great. Another non-news story that will get blown out of proportion by the media, with "interested parties" standing with their knickers in a twist and paraded by the republicans, ad nauseum. Can we talk about healthcare, the tanking economy and the fact that I can barely afford to fill up my gas tank?!? Sheesh...
Forgiven- It is still a Nazi concentration camp, they killed Jews at both.
Seems like an honest mistake.
Why sure, yeah, Buchenwald sounds just like   Auschwitz. It even rhymes.

..and now it's his great uncle?
Here comes HILLARY!!! Time to blast this!

or Pat Buchanan. "I tell you Obama is unelectable."
Barack Obama's team..... Ready from Day One

From Huff Post:

'...AP: Obama's Political Team Out-Organized Clinton

NEDRA PICKLER | May 24, 2008 02:20 PM EST |

WASHINGTON — Call them Kool-Aid drinkers. Political romantics. Starry-eyed dreamers.

But as the marathon Democratic primary campaign nears an end, Barack Obama's staff is on the verge of vindicating its belief that the eloquent black freshman senator from Illinois was a unique candidate who could win the Democratic nomination in one of the biggest upsets in presidential politics.

The band of Obama loyalists who imagined that could happen have stunned even themselves with their success against Hillary Rodham Clinton, who appeared to have wrapped up the nomination last year, before any votes were cast. Now, they face a new challenge with the impending nomination and campaign against Republican John McCain.

If they succeed, many team members could be helping run the country eight months from now. Presidents often appoint campaign advisers to top administration jobs.

The team was led by calm and focused campaign manager David Plouffe; their strategy was inspired by the candidate's experience as a community organizer. They built a campaign designed to accomplish what other political sensations like Gary Hart and Howard Dean failed to do _ turn the energy and excitement of the Obama phenomenon into long-term results.

"I think everyone knew realistically that he was starting as an underdog," said longtime friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett. "But I don't think he would have started down this path with a team that didn't think he would win. It was going to be an uphill battle, but in the end I think we were all confident that it could be done and that he could do it."

Matching Obama's organizing background, the team has roots in conducting on-the-ground congressional campaigns across the country. Many top aides were groomed by former House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt and former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle instead of by the Clinton wing of the party. Clinton's team was built with Washington and New York operatives.

From its experience in congressional races, the Obama team understood firsthand the extent of Clinton fatigue in the heartland and the lesson of the 2006 midterm elections: America wants change.

Obama's chief directive for hiring the more than 700 staff members who eventually came to work for him was: No Drama Allowed. Obama's even demeanor is reflected in the advisers closest to him. While Clinton's campaign divided into conflicting power centers whose emotional disputes leaked publicly, any fights in the Obama campaign were kept in the family.

Plouffe embodies Obama's vision _ a steady and unemotional number cruncher averse to the limelight, able to tune out noise and focus on the moves needed to reach the end game. Plouffe was the mastermind of Obama's long-range campaign plan that looked beyond the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday primaries that Clinton had predicted would deliver the nomination to her. He dispatched staff to states that Clinton's campaign overlooked, particularly small caucus states where intensive organization produced wins that swelled Obama's delegate lead.

A Gephardt guy, Plouffe had worked on campaigns that went broke, so he was notoriously cheap. Obama attracted a talented staff willing to work for much less than they could have made with Clinton. Plouffe carefully minded the bank account to preserve enough money to keep running after the wildly expensive Super Tuesday contests while Clinton's campaign went broke. She had to lend it $11.4 million to stay afloat.

In the month after Super Tuesday, Obama won 11 straight contests and took a delegate lead that Clinton has not been able to erase.

That's not to say Obama's campaign plan worked flawlessly. The initial plan was to turn a win in Iowa into a win in New Hampshire that would make his nomination unstoppable, but Clinton defeated him in New Hampshire and the campaign dragged on for months.

Now the team must reunite the fractured party and introduce Obama to a whole new swath of voters as he takes on a well-known war hero with bipartisan appeal. The campaign is rapidly adding new people, like experienced communications strategist Anita Dunn, who is married to campaign general counsel Bob Bauer and recently joined Obama's inner circle.

Obama's other closest advisers:

_ David Axelrod, a former newspaper columnist who shares Obama's talent with words, is the most experienced and visible political strategist. An idealist who exudes enthusiasm for his candidate, Axelrod helps buck Obama up on the road. Also from Chicago, he can play down-and-dirty politics with a Midwestern smile.

_ Jarrett, who has helped guide Obama's entire political career, brings blunt assessments only a longtime friend can provide. Jarrett has known the Obamas since before they were married, when she hired Michelle to work for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Known to be cool under pressure, she stepped up her campaign role last fall when Obama was a distant second to Clinton. Bringing a fresh outsider perspective, she held staff accountable.

_ Pete Rouse, who has run Obama's Senate office, is known for loyalty and a self-effacing manner. Rouse brings expert knowledge of Washington to a team based in Chicago. He protects Obama's standing in the capital city and has brought in other D.C. operatives, particularly from the Daschle fold where he used to run things.

_ Robert Gibbs, who has been at Obama's side since his Senate campaign, is communications director. A Southerner and tough fighter, Gibbs is a passionate defender and can channel the candidate's thoughts. He's also among a few who can frankly tell Obama what needs to improve.

_ Michelle Obama, the candidate's wife, is his closest confidant. She often says, "I'm not his senior adviser, I'm his wife." But she also talks about how dinner conversations about their family are what's in his mind when he's crafting policy. She's the ultimate truth teller to the candidate; he calls her for feedback after debates. She has led the campaign's outreach to female voters: As a lawyer and hospital executive, she provides evidence that Obama respects strong women even as he's campaigning against one.

Another crucial adviser is Steve Hildebrand, who oversaw state-by-state efforts to run up Obama wins. Other key team members are finance chairwoman Penny Pritzker, finance director Julianna Smoot, policy director Heather Higginbottom, scheduling director Alyssa Mastromonaco, deputy communications director Dan Pfeiffer, national press secretary Bill Burton, economics adviser Austan Goolsbee and foreign policy aides Anthony Lake and Susan Rice.

Wow. Much ado about NOTHING. Does the McCain camp really expect people to be outraged by this? If so, they'd better start destroying video tape of the 1,001 things McCain's flip-flopped or flubbed in the past four years.
I am very glad the RNC and who ever else is making a big thing about this.  I would have never known.  I am happy this fact came out; it only helps Obama with the agreement, that he is an American, and from a family who has fought for this country.  Like Obama is doing now.  I am proud of every American who has fought and/or died for our Country.  RNC I believe you are making a mountain out of a molehill and you are going to regret it.
Even Barack makes a small mistake from time to time.  Even though he mistakenly referenced Auschwitz his story is still correct because his uncle did fight in WW2 and did participate in freeing a concentration camp at Buchenwald.

The repugnant ones will always try to make a mountain out of a mole hill because they have little else to yap about.  Maybe they can talk about "Warmonger" McCain's unlucky and incompetent combat record in VietNam that caused him to be a POW.  Talk about a waste of taxpayer money, the taxpayers paid a lot to train this phoney war hero just to lose two jets to fly one unsuccessful combat mission.
This is not a big deal. It's wording. Of course the blogs are a buzz...when are they not.

lessons in brevity: http://www.mofata.com
Obama misspoke.

Let's move on folks.
Eric Valez, Texas: '...Typical Obama. He just reads what ever Soros or Moveon tells him to read...'

And yet, he managed to KICK THE CRAP OUT OF HALLARY !!

Watch out John McCain !!

John McCaine, Endless War

Of course the right-wing blogs are all atither because Obama gave the name of the wrong concentration camp; beats addressing him on issues. 'Cause, really, when they're screeching this loudly over something so inconsequential, you know their '08 campaign's gonna be running on fumes.
RNC grasping at straws again.  Deperate.

I can't figure out what the fuss is all about, the General Election has already been decided.  Obama will win by a landslide, barring any really stupid mistakes.  With the exception of a portion of those Clinton-Democrats who are either racist or just too darned stubborn to vote for the guy who beat their girl, the far-left is going for Obama and the far-right is staying home because McCain is not their man.  That leaves the moderates to decide this one, and unless they are racist (which would sort of make them un-moderate) I think they are going to lean for Obama, not McCain, because Obama is still a sensible choice even if you're a moderate, plus he doesn't have the uncontrolled emotion/foul mouth factor or the doddering old man factor that shackle McCain.
