Obama's 'Auschwitz' mistake

Posted: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 5:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The right-wing blogs have been abuzz over Obama's comments yesterday, at a town hall in New Mexico, that his uncle had helped liberate concentration camps, and was among the “first American troops” at Auschwitz. The blogs and the Republican National Committee have hit Obama hard, criticizing him for not knowing his history -- that the Soviets, not the Americans, liberated Auschwitz.

The Obama camp admits the mistake, saying Obama meant Buchenwald, not Auschwitz. “Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II -- especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said. “Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically.”

Here is what Obama said, while talking about post-traumatic stress disorder afflicting veterans, per NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum: “I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps, and the story in our family was is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn’t leave the house for six months, right. Now obviously something had really affected him deeply but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain. That’s why you know the, this idea of making sure that every single veteran when they are discharged are screened for post traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need, that’s why its so important.”

And here's video.

The RNC wrote this in response: “Barack Obama’s dubious claim is inconsistent with world history and demands an explanation. It was Soviet troops that liberated Auschwitz, so unless his uncle was serving in the Red Army, there’s no way Obama’s statement yesterday can be true. Obama’s frequent exaggerations and outright distortions raise questions about his judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief.”

The RNC also provides a link to the Holocaust Museum to show the Soviets liberated Auschwitz.

But in its statement today, the Obama campaign said the candidate’s great uncle, who the campaign says was his grandmother’s brother, was a member of the 89th Infantry Division, which liberated Ohrdruf, a subcamp of Buchenwald. The campaign also provides a link to the U.S. Holocaust Museum, but this a description of the 89th Infantry’s part. It also provided a separate link to the 89th’s role here.

Jump on Obama because his uncle helped liberate a different concentration camp.

McCain=Endless War in Iraq.
I am sick and tired of people beating up on Barack Obama. Obama knows very little about what has happened outside of his district in Chicago, but yet people try to trip him up on trival things like this stuff! Who cares who liberated who in a war that happened more then a 100 years ago?!?

Obama/08
If the Repubs drop this then maybe the Dems will drop the McCain Iran confusion.  I'll just wait for the endless loop of Lieberman whispering into McCains ear.

Charlie Payne was the brother, of Obama's grandmother.
He was Obama's great uncle.
Here is what our soldiers saw.
Imagine if you saw what they saw.

No, he said Auschwitz because it stirkes the loudest chord and feeling ... just when he said the Selma, Alabama marches of 1965, that happened FOUR YEARS AFTER he was born in 1961, were the reason his parents could overcome racism to have him. And where did he say that, you ask? Selma, AL. ( There are plenty, but that's the worst one for me because it's directly related to my family. )

He says what's convenient to manipulate his audience's emotions. He's lied more in a couple years than most politicians do in a decade.
Obama is just not electable. This is only one example.  He will be made mincemeat of during the general.  Hillary would be a much stronger candidate.  Other than his good oratorical style, there really is nothing to elevate Obama over other Democrats and, indeed, much to relegate him to the unelectable bin.  Once again, Democrats have chosen style over substance.  Estimates by the RNC of a 50-point electoral victory for McCain seem very realistic after comments like this. Anybody can make a mistake, but not if you have no gravitas to withstand it.
Yea, Obama makes a factually incorrect comment ABOUT history. Bush and McCain factually make incorrect HISTORY.

Please let all of us know when the RNC figures out the concept of degree.
"Obama misspoke.

Let's move on folks."

Why don't the other candidates get that free pass??
wow... if this is the best the RNC can pull, Dems will be cleaning UP this November.

Obama + Fillibuster proof Senate = Change We can Believe in!
McCain the collaborator dares to speak on this topic?

Cheney the chickenhawk? Please. Bush 2, Mr AWOL?
McCain has nothing else to talk about.
"Why sure, yeah, Buchenwald sounds just like   Auschwitz. It even rhymes.

..and now it's his great uncle?"

This man's uncle liberated a concentration camp!  That is something to be celebrated and the republican idiots are all in a tizzy because he didn't call his uncle "great uncle" and got the name of the camp wrong?  Did you get the point of the story at all?  That we aren't respecting our servicemen, that their sacrifice is worth more than what we give them. Obviously you didn't because you sit there and nitpick over word choices.  Pathetic.  Seriously a shame that the whole point of the story is lost on you people.
Mike T,
Type in Earl Hopper/McCain and see what a war hero he was. NOT! He gave secrets to the enemies and crashed 5 airplanes. He got his injuries from the crashes.
McCain is not sure if it the Jews were held in Iran or Iraq or Afghanistan. Hillary thought it was a band of disoriented Bosnian Snipers that liberated Auschwicz. Both of the former would tell it as if they faced grave danger or were personally held as P.O.W's there.

Obama made a mistake and AMAZINGLY...that is right folks...AMAZINGLY is owning it right away! Neither of the other two criminal thug idiot losers would be so quick to admit fault and correct themselves. McFossil had to be corrected by another politician WHILE ON FILM!
This is no big deal.  Obama's not perfect.
OK, Barack Obama cited Auschwitz instead of Ohrdruf.  Does this make his uncle any less a hero?  Before those at the RNC cast any aspersions on Barack Obama's uncle, I would ask who the hell are they to attempt to smear the heroic legacy of the man?  What are their credentials anyway?  If this was brought out by some punk nosed political strategist with no tie to the events in question then the RNC is sinking to Clintonesque lows in their tactics.
