Bush White House: Scott strikes back

How bad are things now for President Bush? The presumptive GOP nominee won't even attend multiple fundraisers where Bush will be in attendance (McCain only attended the one that took place in his own home state). Now, Bush's former press secretary has written a tell-all that just, well, trashes the West Wing. The Washington Post: "Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the American people with a sophisticated ‘political propaganda campaign’ led by President Bush and aimed at ‘manipulating sources of public opinion’ and ‘downplaying the major reason for going to war.’”

“McClellan includes the charges in a 341-page book, ‘What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception,’ that delivers a harsh look at the White House and the man he served for close to a decade. He describes Bush as demonstrating a ‘lack of inquisitiveness,’ says the White House operated in ‘permanent campaign’ mode, and admits to having been deceived by some in the president's inner circle about the leak of a CIA operative's name."

The New York Times: Mr. McClellan’s book … is the first negative account by a member of the tight circle of Texans around Mr. Bush… He is harsh about the administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina, saying it ‘spent most of the first week in a state of denial’ and ‘allowed our institutional response to go on autopilot.’ Mr. McClellan blames Mr. Rove for one of the more damaging images after the hurricane: Mr. Bush’s flyover of the devastation of New Orleans. When Mr. Rove brought up the idea, Mr. McClellan writes, he and Dan Bartlett, a top communications adviser, told Mr. Bush it was a bad idea because he would appear detached and out of touch. But Mr. Rove won out, Mr. McClellan writes.”

Politico, which broke the news of this book, adds, “Among the most explosive revelations in the 341-page book…:
--McClellan charges that Bush relied on ‘propaganda’ to sell the war.
--He says the White House press corps went too easy on the administration.
--He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be ‘badly misguided.’
--The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them – and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him the full facts.
--McClellan asserts that the aides -- Karl Rove, the president’s senior adviser, and Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff – ‘had at best misled’ him about their role in the disclosure of former CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity.”

To paraphrase Adam Sandler, this is something that should have been brought to our attention years ago.
so mcllellen the rat rats on his fellow rats, nothing new here just more proof of the lies and stupidity of bush/cheney/rove/mccant
The big news here is not that Bush, Cheney and other lied and deceived the nation.  The big news story is that someone as 'high-up' as McClellan is calling them on it.

Although, there will be some that argue that he's just doing this to sell his book.

lovin' this!
Who woulda thunk that republicans would lie to us. I'm shocked. Anyone care to vote republican this fall?
McClellan is a scumbag.  This is just retaliation because Bush didn't back his Mamma for Guvna in the last election.

gObama08!
Scottie doesn't know !

This is a belated attempt to wash the blood  of 4000 soldiers and 100 000 civilian lives lost in a propaganda-driven war.

You can't take it back Scottie. You were the face or the mouthpiece of that war.

Job ending......need money......wright a tell all book.
Better late than never, but people knew Bush and the gang was a bunch of thugs anyway.

Where are those republicans that posted on the Auschuwitz/ Buchenwald blog about Obama?

That is nothing compared to who you support...yeah...you supported Bush for 8 years and allowed him to demolish the constitution and tear down this country. HHUMMMM!   I guess people are better known by the decisions they make.
The truth keeps coming out slowly about how "Tyrant" Bush has mislead us purposely into the idiotic war in Iraq.  So nice to see McClellan now throw the Tyrant under the bus as was done to him.  Let's hope we get to hear more about the illegal activities of the worst president in American history!

Isn't it ironic that this criminal wrecking crew of democracy was supposed to bring back honor and integrity to the White House?

Go Obama 08/12!
Three words...

Wag the Dog

(if you've never seen the movie, go out and rent it now)
Can someone say "impeachment"?  I wish Congress could...

Yeah, he was the mouthpiece - but what did you expect?  That is what being a press sec. is.  Keep in mind, though, how fast GWB and his cronies tend to torpedo ANYONE who got in their way and actually speaks the truth.  Maybe he wanted to wait to write the book to make sure he was financially secure before they ruined him.

Not defending his actions, just a thought.
So now he develops a conscience....

When all the truth comes out about this administration we will be stunned about how close we came to a dictatorship.

The shredders will be working overtime till January.

Did people really not know this and have to be told by McClellan?  I thought it was pretty clear at the time it was happening. No surprise here, though David Gregory, who was the only one in the press that tried to call the administration on it's behavior must feel vindicated.
On another matter:
Dear Really:
Thank you for taking my quiz, for you make my point.  If you start out with a false premise in an analogy, your "analogy" is false.  It was not that Chamberlain talked with Hitler that causes him to labeled an appeaser, it was because he ceded land and lives.  But, he was not necessarily badly thought of in his day.  He served during WW 2 as a part of Churchill's War Cabinet.  He did not slink off into the dark.

Just because you say Senator Obama is weak does not make it so.  And just because you say that Chamberlain had no further role in the war does not make that so either.
Everyone knew shrub was lying like a rug, but it's nice to have an insider confirm what everyone knew. I'm frankly more interested in the men in the shadows, Rove and Cheney, the guys who REALLY run things, but leave no fingerprints. It's those guys I'd like to see indicted for treason in the Plame case. Bush lying is small change---everyone knew he was bs-ing the U.S., that's a no-brainer. Rove and Cheny are the real villains of this particular piece.
One of the biggest mistakes Bush made was having this twit as Press Sec. If he had someone like Tony Snow instead he could have prevented some of the lies from piling up so high. This "book" sounds like it could have been gleaned from the NYT op-ed pages. Kind of like that stock op-ed they keep around to have different people step forward & sign. This could just be another case of NewSpeak trying to "frame" something before it happens just like different reports from the past. Blast it on the headlines days in advance and never go back. Don't blame us for Bush when all you offered was Gore and Kerry.
I hope every American, particularly republicans and Bush supporters give serious attention to this news.  What a disgraceful coward Scott McClellan is...not for his turn on Bush but for his disregard of the truth.  If this man uses one cent of profit from this book for anything other than helping the families of fallen soldiers or victims of Katrina he's beyond contempt.
Bush and Cheney are the scumbags, McClellan is just an associate.
There is a God! There also is BAD KARMA, Bush is a lier & a loser, can't wait till he goes back his little Texas Town, they miss their idiot! They & the Bush family,& some Fox news guys make up the 27% that still support, now anyway!
Tell me again why impeachment was taken off the table?
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Mr. McClellan for exposing the truth that I know I have believed about the bush administration for a long time.  I have sat back in awe and amazement at how so many people could be decieved and led astray.  The evangelicals are the only reason bush was put back in office. The abortion issue is bigger than anyone campaigning recognizes.  That is exactly why the flip on mccain's stance.  Again, Thank you for telling the truth --I feel vindicated.  I haven't felt like I have had a president in 7 long years.  Bush has never been nor will mccain ever be my president.
Good on Scott McClellan!  He figured out what many already knew, and what we all know now.
Investigations, Investigations, and more Investigations, don’t stop until they are all in jail. I want justice!!!  I don’t want to hear talk of a time to heal this nation. That we should bury the past, that digging into this will only rip this Nation apart. Real healing will come with Real justice. We need to make sure no future Administrations ever attempts to do what these men have done. They need to be held accountable.
Now if only Fallon would write a book as well ;)
We are finally being told the truth of the corruption within our government and scarier, within the small circle of Bush's evil empire...I never voted for Bush because of his father's policies and past in the CIA and we as Americans should be fuming about our goverment using the horrors of 911 to invade Irag and the lies kept coming...Bush is worse than Nixon or any other president in US history... Is it really too late to impeach Bush and bring this whole administration to justice?
Class Warrior. I guess not everybody knew. Hillary voted for the war!
Anyone who still doesn't believe that Bush and his gang of thugs have been lying to us for the past 7 years are simply sheep in line for the slaughter...They have no mind of their own and would beleive that Bush is God if he told them so...What a country of fools we've become...
"Don't blame us for Bush when all you offered was Gore and Kerry"

Hahahahaha. Kinda like "Don't blame us for Hitler when all you offered was <someone better>." So you don't like Gore or Kerry, fine. They don't stink like Bush/Cheney.
It seems that it is impossible to exaggerate the dishonesty and incompetence of this administration.  How did the Republicans nominate such an unqualified person.  Way to go Scott, you may have just salvaged your last remaining molecule of dignity.
ANYBODY would have been better!Take responsibility.
Dave,
Neither Gore nor Kerry had the neo-cons menchant for warmongering.  Troll elsewhere.
When are we going to take the next logical step and prosecute these people for their criminal actions?
This is like a gangland story. A really nasty Bob Hoskins could play  Bush. This validates everything I felt, emailed and voted against during the two terms. We have no moral authority vis-a-vis other democracies or autocracies. The only thing that hasnt come out is Bush's possible involvement in rubbing out enemies.

How could over 50% of the people be manipulated so slimily over two terms? No, Virginia, democracy is not necessarily the best system(or even less worse than all the others) when money, greed, powerhungriness and psychopaths control things. For those of the evangelic bent and other readers of the left behind crowd, yes, Bush has been Carpathia and you supported him. Or, was he Lex Luthor?

Go, Barack and the new brooms to sweep out this garbage.
I'm surprised aren't you? Give me a break. Colin, could write the same truth as others, Gonzales, Rumsie could, but won't. It's worst than Nixon, people and you've waited for this? GOP and defenders, just sink with Bush, stay with McCain. Let's see Arie, Snow...are you next?
I don't think we'll learn anything we don't already know - or at least suspect.  We've got some major problems here in the US and I'm not sure that any of the candidates for president can clean this up.  The clean-up *must* be exacted by the people!  We have to take control of this situation, folks, or we're gone.  Simple as that.
It's nice to see there are only a couple of idiots posting here in support of Uncle Dick and W the Stooge.  I say impeach them both even if there's no time to finish it.  Then go for criminal charges.
It's a shame when you steop into the polling booth and vote against the worst candidate.  In the case of Bush vs Kerry I voted for Bush and given the same choices I'd do so again.
Seriously, this is WAY out of hand!
Valerie Plame outed herself when she made political contributions and listed a known CIA front as her employer. Furthermore, the identity of the "inside" man who was the first member of the White House Staff to "confirm" her "secret" identity was known the moment the investigation opened.

Scott is just looking to sell books and is telling the rabid public who buy such junk exactly what they want to hear. Most of the critics and pundits have no clue what a real dictatorship is.....
They left out one thing. GOD brings out the truth.
FINALLY a president we can now all agree is worse than NIXON!
Scott McClellan is only confirming what seventy percent of the country has already figured out. Bush and Cheney are brutal warmongers, pure and simple. I was saying that way back in 2003.  They cherry picked the intelligence and told lies and distortions to the American people.
Gee! That means that unrepentant liberals like myself and most of my friends had it right all along!  Whoda thunkit (except for, perhaps, most of the citizens of England, France, Germany, Australia....)
Many of these charges were obvious to many of us from the beginning; however, since the majority of you voted for this asshole, you got what you deserved and the rest of us got screwed.dpb
I say everyone protest the 2 party oligopoly and vote 3rd party in november.  I don't even care which 3rd party, so long as dem's and repubs know we're sick of the BS
The Amish have a solution for this.  Just shun the man.  Bush need never attend any fund raisers, after dinner speeches, or be asked his opinion on world affairs again.  Once out of office he should be forgotten.  His world should be limited to his ranch in Crawford which is the limit of his intellect anyway.  Given his ego, this would be the most painful judgment we could impose.
I'm sure the Bush Administration will go down as the worst ever.  Whether a republican or democrat, for the war or against, one should not be surprised to know Bush cares about "his pockets", "his good ole boys" and oil.
Three words - IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!

Actually, I would like to see this YANKEE President receive some, no, a lot of Texas Justice, hehehe.
it has been obvious since day one...we all knew this from the start.....congress knew it and approved it.....they still havent done anything about it......keep waving the flag while people die in iraq....let them die in vain and keep bush off the golf course.....i hate having a coward as a president...
you mean our boy Stretch could have done more reporting and less nuzzling with T Blossom?
