Obama camp hopes to avoid 'circus'

Posted: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 2:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The Obama campaign called for unity at Saturday’s meeting, as aides said they hope avoid a “circus”-like atmosphere. Pro-Clinton protests, however, are expected outside the meeting.

“We are not encouraging our people to gather and protest,” Campaign Manager David Plouffe said in a conference call with reporters, adding this warning shot. “With a click of a mouse in the Mid-Atlantic, we could get thousands of people there. But in the interest of party unity we are not encouraging a protest. We don’t think a scene is helpful as we try to bring the party together.”

The campaign has sent an e-mail to supporters making sure that message is loud and clear, and Plouffe said there will also be a message on the Obama campaign Web site. "We're trying to send a signal that what we don't need is an unhelpful scene here at the close of the nomination fight."

They also attempted to juxtapose their willingness to compromise with the Clinton camp’s hard line on getting the delegates seated 100 percent according to the results of the discounted January primaries in Florida and Michigan. That’s something Plouffe said is “not a position people find terribly reasonable.”

“We don’t think it’s fair to seat them fully,” Plouffe said. “We both played by the rules. We are willing to give them some delegates. They’re out there saying no compromise. We’re saying compromise. And I thnk that’s where most of the party is.”

Obama is on a “healthy moral high ground,” said Obama supporter David Wilhelm, a former Democratic National Committee and Ohio superdelegate. “He’s acting clearly in the interest of promoting party unity. No Obama folks will be protesting. We’re not going to turn this thing into a circus. We’re willing to compromise.”

Former Michigan congressman David Bonior said, “We’re willing to bend and to go to get to where we need to to take on McCain in the general election.”

Obama supporters from Florida are hopeful for a resolution and sought to pivot to the issues of the economy, housing, health care and the war.

“Democrats are uniting in Florida behind Sen. Obama,” Congressman Robert Wexler said. “We hope that the DNC will take this opportunity to bring finality to the question of Florida’s attendance at the Democratic convention, and Sen. Obama supports a compromise to make sure Florida is in attendance and at the convention.”

Rep. Kathy Castor added, “I’m really looking forward to a resolution on Saturday and moving on to the general election. It looks like the rules committee is moving toward a 50 percent solution with full delegation in attendance. They’re on the right track there. The 50 percent number is in the rules, and that should have been the way the DNC should have handled it all along -- rather than put us through this rigmarole.”

“We need to come up with a compromise so we can move on from here,” Plouffe said. “There’s a lot of interest in both of these states in moving on to the general election.”

NOTES: On Clinton claim of having won the popular vote, Plouffe turned the tables and claimed the popular vote, saying Michigan and Florida should not be factored into that because Obama did not campaign in Florida and his name was not on the ballot…

Also, asked if the campaign is stockpiling superdelegates, Plouffe said, “That’s not accurate. We announce superdelegates as people commit to us. We are announcing them as they report to us. … We do not have superdelegates in our back pocket. The pace of movement to us, we’re very pleased by, but no that’s not an accurate statement.”

EXACTLY!!!! This is why I support Obama. The last adult left in this nominating process.

Based on current polls ...

Senator Obama  290 electoral votes
Senator McCain 248 electoral votes

Since you only need 270 to win ... he wins.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs.

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Cool, Calm, Collected, Classy, Clearly Cognizant and Capable of Compromise!
I truly hope that Obama supporters do not attend.  I think by not attending we are taking a much higher road.   I can't believe Clinton is encouraging what could become a riot.  Does she really have the best interest of the dem party or this country at heart?  I think not!  Who's the true patriot???
Sorry Sen. Obama, The circus will be in town, with the clowns leading the way followed by their ringmaster HRC.
Don't ya just love a good knife fight?!?  One ends up dead and the other wounded and maybe crippled. Go Dems! Unite in 08! Where do I go to retch?
I live in CT, trust me, if they needed me, Washington DC is available to me with a few hours drive.  I'd do it in a heartbeat to show my support for Obama. He is totally correct, if they put out a call or a click, they would have tons of supporters there.  They did not call or click so I am able to be home (or somewhat so) on Sat, which means chauffeur for swimming lessons, soft and t-ball and a No Child Left Inside event at a state park.  Which, of course, my kids are happy about (being here, not there).

But if needed, I'd be there.
Forget the circus, the real issue is McCain is barely a sideshow in the mainstream media:

I don't hear the Clinton people making any attempt to calm protesters.

Sounds like a plan, to me.

And would SOMEONE start pointing out with BIG arrows that the original decision to exclude FL and MI was approved by a rules committee LOADED with Clinton-supporters...including Howard Ickes!!!!  (Obama only had one supporter on the rules committee at that time.)

So,please...point out the hypocrisy of Hillary's ridiculous chant to 'count all the votes'.  (

Mine already doesn't 'count'--I'm from a caucus state.  And if I lived in FL or MI, it still wouldn't count--cuz I would have been one of the **millions** who voted in another party's primary or who didn't bother to vote since I was told it "didn't count" by Mrs. Clinton herself.)
More HRC strong-arm tactics. She's determined to force herself on us.
This is different. People saying they won't protest. And they are willing to compromise. How do you think the HRC supporters will feel protesting by themselves? I personally think more highly about Obama and his supporters for not wanting to make the meeting a circus.
Classy, classy.  Barack Obama & his team make me proud.  HRC's witch hunt is very sad. I use to admire her but not anymore.  White, over 50 Catholic woman who will Never vote for Hilliary.
Obama (liar) can't get his great-uncle's WWII record straight, anf he can't win a big state (Oh, excuse me, he did win N.C. and Va., but what about about those bedrock Dem. states like Cali., N.J. Fla.,Texas, Ohio, Penn. and Mass.?) The sad thing is Obama outspent Clinton 3-to-1 in Penn., and STILL lost by a landslide.

RACE CARD WATCH: How soon will Obama (and Axelrod) play the race card against McCain?
No protesting by Obama supporters.I think Obama is a true class act. I wish Hillarys camp was the same. Then may be the VP thing would have been possible . But no she is willing to kill the party or hope that Obama has a mishap. That is disgusting  and befitting of a unsavory people like the Clintons and the Bushs.
Obama has made a farce of the primary process since day one, what does another day mean.  David Wilhelm and Obama supporter who was mentioned in the Rezko Trial, has nerve to comment of the run to the White House, half if not more of Obama Campaign supporters have association with the Chicago/Illinois political arena.  "Pay and Play", policies of Chicago/Illinois politics.
The high ground! Obama the classy candidate.  That is the reason we will vote for him in November.  However if the election is stolen from him, my wife and I will cast our votes for John Mcain.  Hillary will never be president!!!!!
Obama is handling the meeting on Saturday the right way, but, as I'm sure he and his campaign know, he should be on the lookout for dirty tricks from the Hillary folks.  They cannot be trusted.
the only way to avoid a circus is for SD's to endorse Obama after Puerto Rico.
Clinton will do anything to split the party apart

I also have a dream
Obama puts mccain on blast
Hillary Blogs
Obamas resume
Want to know the difference between Clinton and Obama supporters
And Find out What has been bothering me

This and more on…

Obama, ever the voice of calm, reason, and confidence.

I couldn't have said it better myself, that Hillary did in her letter to SD's.
Pat Huntington NY (Sent Wednesday, May 28, 2008 2:03 PM)

That's for sure Pat. Nobody posts more boringly, and ineffectual as you.

HOPES TO AVOID CIRCUS ??  Seriously?

Rev. Wright and GD America???
William Ayers???
Tony Resko ???

This ought to be good for a laugh or two!  My advice to Sen. Obama... too little too late to avoid the circus!!  Come Oct. we as Americans will be subject to the best of the best of Rev. Wright and William Ayers!  WHY??  Ask the Senator!

WAY TOO LATE!!  Who's selling the hot dogs and popcorn, thats what I want to know!
I really don't get how HRC & her supporters can argue such garbage with a straight face.  Have they absolutely no morals???  HRC disgusts me -- but I just got to vent by voting early for Obama today in the SD primary. South Dakotans waited their turn--don't disenfranchise us by having no consequences to those that didn't.
The DNC needs to seat MI/FLA in a fair manner. Hillary wants to disenfranchise all votes not Clinton.

It is going to get ugly on the 31st.

Obama '08
Are you being racist what has obamma got to do with thye circus? You guys at MSNBZZZZZZ run your station like you run these posts POORLY
Poor Hillie has been cheated, demeaned, insulted, lied to, disrespected, had dirt kicked in her face, and has been referred to as a female.  Enough!  Go to dnc.org and tell Howard Dean to instruct the super delegates to make their decisions and announce them by the end of the primaries.  Maybe then Hillie can quit suffering so.
This is very sober and progressive thinking. It represents NEW politics, and real CHANGE. The clinton supporter... well the same old politics. BUT they will not succeed. Change has come to stay.

Chuck: where are super updates?
In other words," CLASS" pure and simple.
Just what are the pro-Clinton supporters "protesting"? The audacity of the DNC to follow its own rules to which both candidates agreed?

Give me a break!
Well, this will fit nicely into the history books:

Thousands of angry Clinton fans stormed the meeting hall and demanded their candidate be named the parties nominee or they will go home and take their ball with them!
Let's hope this can be resolved in a friendly way. PLEASE!!!!

Hillary—please go. You have so many emotional problems. Face up to them. And get help. "America the Beautiful" should not get caught up in you and Bill's personal fight.

You really made a lot mistakes—own up to them and move on! Take responsibility for your part in the problems of your campaign and your bad behavior.

Having you run our country is a frightening concept. You are not a team player and you are a HUGE liar. We have had enough of that. PLEASE GO!!!!!!

Glad to see Obama is taking the high road (again).  Unfortunately, Clinton's supporters will make this a 3 ring affair to remember!
We strip you of your votes in 2000 and you squeal and squeal but now who needs to vote say the obamma supporters just call it a draw sounds like 2000 one vote one person would be too hard for the demorats to understand ergo the mess that is the democratic primary
Who is presidential

Who is creating a "Circus"?  Who is Presidential?  Ickes and Hillary and Bill and Wolfston, Its time for you to go home. The party's over. Don't be dumb!

With Barack Obama, we can believe in our future again.
The Clinton supporters, outside, won't have a clue as to how the meeting will be progressing. We sitting at our computers will fare quite well in the information up-date department.

I too speculated that some Hillary committee members would abandon her, out of a sense of decency, just like many of her supers defected.
I don't see Sen. Clinton stopping until she gets what she wants - 100% representation.  Like she says, she isn't a quitter.

Unfortunately, I think she has only just begun, and we'll see her try to take this matter to court.

Be strong, DNC.  May cooler heads prevail.
What he is going to have to do is distance himself as far from the Clintons as he can after he claims the nomonation. The last thing he needs between now and November is the Clinton Clowns popping out of a little car and faining support. Thats the circus he'll need to avoid.
Smart.
I have tremendous respect for David Bonior.  I hope that Michigan, in particular, can be resolved in a way that benefits the Democrats in the fall.  It is a state much like Illinois, with a conservative rural portion and a more liberal downstate urban portion.  The democrats certainly do not want to lose it, and shame on Ms. Granholm for this mess, quite honestly.

Senator Obama and his team are letting the messiest part of this primary fizzle out, and good for them.  If the Clintons think it is in their best interest to encourage an ugly display by their people at this point, I can't understand why.

Isn't it time we all behaved like adults?
This is why Obama is clearly the better candidate.  He does not want to stoop to the level of the Clinton campaign.  They are going to look childiish and it won't put them in a good light.
Grace under fire. Refreshing, healing, uniting.
I am glad that Obamacans are not going to protest like the Clintonites. It is pretty low class to do that because there is enough pressure from the whole DNC to get this thing resolve. There is no need for external pressure because they know what they have to do and they will come up with a solution.

Clintonites should follow the Obamacans example and stay home and leave the rules and bylaws committee to do their job. It will be broadcasted live so watch it on TV and go to the blogs and make their opinion known.

Infact, email the DNC now so that they know what you want them to do.
