Flor-igan: Protest time

Posted: Thursday, May 29, 2008 9:26 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Both the New York Times and Los Angeles Times note that the Clinton campaign is not discouraging protests on their behalf on Saturday, while the Obama campaign is doing just that. "Clinton loyalists are expected to demonstrate outside the hotel. The Obama campaign has urged its supporters to stand down. ‘We don't think it's a helpful dynamic to create chaos,’ said David Plouffe, Obama's campaign manager. ‘In the interest of party unity, we're encouraging our supporters not to protest.’”

Here's more from the Washington Post: "Saturday's pro-Clinton event is being co-organized by the Women Count PAC -- founded by five top Clinton supporters, including longtime friend and fundraiser Susie Tompkins Buell -- and a coalition of disparate other groups working under the umbrella of Count Every Vote '08. Organizers said that they expect people to come from 26 states for the rally, as well as some major celebrity speakers, and that they are receiving logistical assistance or other support from the pro-Clinton United Federation of Teachers and Emily's List.”

“Count Every Vote '08 first came together in mid-March to lobby Democratic superdelegates on behalf of Clinton. Allida M. Black, project director and editor of the Eleanor Roosevelt papers at George Washington University, joined with Tompkins Buell to start Women Count PAC two weeks ago. They raised more than $250,000 and used the money to buy newspaper ads, including ones that ran in the New York Times over the weekend calling on female readers to attend Saturday's rally."

“[T]he Democratic National Committee issued a statement that said the lawyers' memo was not an official recommendation,” the Boston Globe writes. “‘The staff analysis is intentionally neutral; it does not make specific recommendations,’ the statement said. ‘The analysis lays out a rules framework for each challenge, and the issues raised within each challenge. The analysis maintains that the RBC did have proper authority and jurisdiction in imposing the 100% sanction. The RBC had wide latitude in that decision.”

“‘The document also examines the 50% automatic sanction and how to implement such a sanction: Under this scenario, one option would be to reduce the total number of delegates by half; the second option for consideration by the RBC would be to reduce the delegation's votes by half, so that each delegate gets a half vote,’ the statement continues. ‘We look forward to a thorough discussion of these issues at the Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting this Saturday, May 31st in Washington, DC.’ Senior Clinton aides disputed the notion that the DNC lawyers memo requires punishing Florida and Michigan with the loss of at least half their delegates, saying that was only one option available to the rules committee.”

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step in if necessary to make sure the presidential nomination fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama does not reach the Democratic National Convention -- though she believes it could be resolved as early as next week,” the San Francisco Chronicle writes. “Pelosi predicted Wednesday that a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said ‘I will step in’ if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries."

Do realize that Pelosi probably holds sway over anywhere from 20-40 superdelegates…

Here is an idea....MI and FL knowingly broke the rules.  Punish them, make them sit out this one.  Atleast they will get to vote in November.  Case closed.

Pelosi is a coward, she is all talk but if it came to it would never act.  She could end this whole thing today with her endorsement of either candidate but she wants to drag it on so the party gets more news coverage (good or bad)

McCain 08
Bully Clinton wants  to strong-arm the committee into giving her the nominaton.
Pelosi will step in if necessary?  who does she think she is, scalia?
Of course she is not going to tell them to stand down.  It is ridiculous and embarassing to be a woman because these women are behaving very childish. There is going to be a soultion, maybe not the one they like but the issue will be resolved.  I think it is a shame that Ms. Clinton is not acting more maturely on this matter.
if people are upset about theri vote not counting in Mi and FL, blame Clinton. Her campaign manger Ickes and MCAuliffe voted to strip MI and FL of their delegates. They created this mess with their rules, not Obama. It amazes me how people fail to acknowledge Clinton's campaign mangers created these rules. If they cared about voters rights, they should had never voted to strip these states of their delegates. They also created the rule of stripping 50% of the delegates for states that have moved up their primaries. Wake up and stop believing their lies.
Where was Team Hillary when the DNC was originally deciding whether or not to sanction FL and MI for moving up their primaries? Oh, that's right - every single one of the Clinton committee members voted FOR the sanctions.

I guess they were for the sanctions before they were against them.
Clinton and her people are actively trying to destroy Democratic chances for the fall. Even if these primaries (neither of which was valid because everyone was told they wouldn't count, which dramatically affected the results even in Florida) are given to Clinton the way she wants, she will still not be the nominee.

BTW: If Puerto Rico's "popular vote" counts in that talley then shouldn't all the commonwealths and territories like the Virgin Islands as well as Democrats abroad?
The great Nancy Pelosi will STEP IN! I thought that kind of pompousness was the exclusive domain of the Clintstones. How many of the 20-40 SDs in her little flock of sheep are still uncommitted?

And of course, that is in "late June". What will her greatness be doing this Saturday when Hilarious Clinton supporters are running amok?
Hillary is hellbent on destroying the democratic party, or at least any chance we have at waging a cohesive and unified campaign agst McCain in the general election. Which works out just perfect for her; IF Obama loses, she (and Bill) can gloat - "I told ya'll so!".

Pathetic.
flor-gians are going to make a fool of themeselves again and thats the only reason I will be watch the rules and bylaws meet.

I Have a dream

Let's not support such old piliticking. This is old and belongs to the archives. Such nonsence should not be promoted!!
I hope this doesn't get messy....

http://thepajamapundit.com/
I find this whole situation disheartening.  Not because the votes won't count.  Because someone is being allowed to use an issue that she and her campaign signed off on and then blaming it on someone else that had nothing to do with it.  I find it disgusting that some people seem to forget the facts of the situation.  Are the American people really this dumb?  How many more years do we have to go thru this type of crap??
It's a real kick to watch this who-ha...those that want a resolution are behind in all counts and those that are in front are watching them shake...
Sign of true leader...let the loser gaffee themselves to death.... compromise or go away...
HILLARY CAN STOP THIS .
BUT SHE WON'T.

That shows her character. She doesn't care about anybody but herself.
AND thats why she was rejected by the voters. She lost.

plain and simple.
Nothing to do with gender ... it her CHARACTER !
Senator Obama rather than support a revote in both States months ago decided it was in his best interests not to do so!!

So here we are..."divide and conquer" politics from the great "unifier"...this is ludicrous and this whole fiasco can be laid firmly at his feet!!

He wants to represent some of the American people, some of the time...that's NOT the kind of President we need!!!

Remember, one of the main points of his campaign was that he wasn't a politician...something new...the kind of change we were all looking for!!  This is so pathetic it's beyond comprehension and yet, millions of people are buying this!!!  How appalling!!
If it wasn’t crystal clear before, it now is –unless they want a bloodbath in August and a defeat in November, THE SUPERDELEGATES MUST ACT NOW TO END THIS THING.

Seems as though many of the protesters are throw-backs to the 1960-70's..The times they are a changing..I speak as a 71 year old woman, who protested the war, worked for civil rights, women's rights etc. but have now moved on and not gotten stuck in what is seemingly an out of date agenda..Surely, a woman president one of these days, but not Hillary...and speaking of misogyny as they whine about so insistently, last time I looked Nancy Pelosi and Donna Brazile fit into the female gender..oh well,I guess as usual, they want it both ways..hmmmm
Protest is what Democrats do best. Leadership, ideas, and statesmenship, not so much.
Don't underestimate Nancy Pelosi. She has the well being of the party at heart.  She believes the candidate with the most pledged delegates should get the nomination, i.e. Barack.  She is strong enough to stand up to the Clintons.  Her stake in the fight. To get more Democrats in the House of Rep.  Her influence goes wide and deep.
Saturday will be a bad day for feminism -- I feel sorry for the next woman who runs for national office--everyone will be so sour on women candidates after Hillary. She is belittling her candidacy by whining, crying faux foul on sexism, boo hooing her way to sympathy votes, even throwing the Democratic Party under the proverbial bus. I just hope they don't appear to be a rabid mob. As a woman, and feminist, I am embarrassed by Hillary and her followers--they should be ashamed that they aren't able to lose with grace.
Every vote should be counted.  And every American should protest until every single vote is COUNTED.  "No matter which candidate it may benefit."
'Ah, those white male, blue collar working class voters that Barack needs to convince to join him, and his supporters, will not be impressed with Hillary, and her out of control, screaming, angry mob of menopausal crazies, furiously frothing at the mouth, over an irrational cause.

Before you ponce, I am a 57 year old women going through the change of life, and I know first hand how it affects your emotions, so save it.

Once again, Hillary's tac has backlash written all over it.
Every vote should be counted.  And every American should protest until every single vote is COUNTED.  "No matter which candidate it may benefit."
Clinton has to be the sorest loser in recorded political history.  has she no shame?
HILLARY ROVE CLINTON:THE WHINER BULLY
I wonder if all of this confusion would be happening if the shoe was on Obama's foot??

Also has anyone given any thought to the fact that Hillary Clinton is trying to steal the nomination from an African American who has waited 300 years to be given the same respect and credit that white folks take for granted.

Barack has EARNED THIS the hard way by using his brains, and resilience.

Think about the affect this is having on 13 million Black folks in this country.

THINK ABOUT IT!!!!

Why does Hillary need make such a distrubance...It makes people dislike her more and more...All they are doing is hurting the police force who have to keep peace...and so it goes...how much does Hillary give a darn about people...listen up people....that is what the Clinton do have have done...it has nothing to do with anyone of us...it's ALWAYS has been about them!!
They don't give a flying hoot about Michigan or Florida...only about what is in it for them!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
Absoultely no doubt about it . . . Clinton has laid the groundwork to fight this thing all the way to the convention floor and has every intention of fighting on after next week

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rachel-maddow/clinton-to-the-convention_b_103078.html

As already reported here earlier today, the Clinton campaign will not accept anything but a 100% seating of both FL and MI with MI's "not-Clinton" delegates all going to her carefully hand-picked MI delegation

Even after Obama clinches the final number of delegates next week, she will appeal the DNC ruling on FL/MI all the way to the convention floor

And make no doubt about it, the Republicans will fan the fire all the way to the convention and then still have the gall to say that the winner "stole" the nomination

Congratulations Democrats . . . you idiots have just assured us of 4 more years of Bush/McCain and a Supreme Court that will roll the calendar on civil rights back 100 years

un-freaking-believable!!!
Desperation, thy name is Hillary.

C'mon already.  I'm from Michigan and everytime I read another article on this, I feel sick.

Of course HRC is not discouraging protesters - then she can hog all the free press for herself and her supporters.

She's going to take this to the convention.  Just brace yourself.  Terry McAulliffe (sorry if I spelled that wrong) said we'd have a nominee by June 15.  They'll weasel out of that statement, too.

Lanny Davis was on MSNBC this AM talking to Mika - sounds like they are gearing up for a fight.

MSM - do us a favor and stop covering this woman after the primaries are over.  Maybe she'll get the hint.  I doubt it, but one can hope.
Some of Clinton's supporters have pushed her as the best VP candidate for party unity and a strong ticket. If she's the best for unity, she can prove that by asking her supporters to stand for unity instead of protest.  The elections are almost over and the party needs to come together.
I am so disgusted by this whole charade!  SUPERS--Please hurry and do something.  It has gotten ugly...  It has gotten on my nerves...  I'm about to have a breakdown...  Are we to be held captive to the Clintons...  Please rescue us and the party...

This debate over Florida and Michigan is Hillary's attempt to cheat, lie and steal her way to the nomination. Harold Ickes, her campaign manager, sits on the DNC committee and should not be present in Saturday's meeting. The DNC should not have given in to this Clinton circus, she would never have started this new campaign 'every vote should be counted' if she was ahead in the primary and everyone who can think or read knows this. The super delegates need to put a stop to Hillary's nasty campaign now regardless of the pressure big donor's are putting on the DNC.
Here's a better idea for Pelosi - go do your job for a change.  how is it that a president can violate the constitution, and lie to congress and the citizens and NOT BE IMPEACHED?  It's because the dems in congress have no "testicular fortitude". Yet, they allowed a democratic president to get impeached for purgery about something that was no one's business any way.
It is so sad that Hillary is making a spectacle out of the democratic party, and preventing us from unifiying against McBush. Poor OB, he can't focus on McSame until he gets sore losers Bill and Hillary out of the mix.  In the end, Bill and Hillary's thurst for regaining power will hurt the Dems
Can someone tell me what obama supporters have to gain by participating in the protest? Other than uniting with millions of people who lost their voice in this primary, they have nothing to gain. Why don't obama do something unique for a change. Despite his unite bumper sticker, he has done nothing other than divide. Why don't they come together in a democratic society and support the millions of people whose voices are lost? Oh, I forgot, that would mean he may stand a broader chance of losing the primary. If he was the only person running for president, I still wouldn't vote for him.
Why would her supporters be protesting this process?  Are they against the committee coming together to make a dicision?  Anyone else?

Its funny how often I see a Clinton supporter commenting on the cult-iness of Obama supporters.  Really?

I think if the Clinton reps at Saturday's meeting are unreasonable and make it look like a circus, you will then see the other super delegates step in and put this to an end.

I hope the committe reminds the Clinton group that they were part of making this situation in creating and agreeing to the rules.

I saw today where they are now going against the 50% cut becuase they claim that when the Clinton campaign reached out to the Obama campaign about re-doing FL and MI, they declined and so they somehow think they should now get 100%. Didn't both state decide on their own that it wasn't possible to do a revote? More shinanigans from the Clinton team. Who do you think will be the first one to write a book on this campaign. My guess is Penn and we'll really get the dirt on Bill and Hillary.
Carol in CA

I am a Floridian and I love how you who live in other states think you are the end all be all of the FL primary.

So Why don't you in the words of Keith Olbermann "Just shut the H*ll up" with regards to FL.

As one other Floridian noted in a comment yesterday we did not have a revote because
Comment is as follows:

For all you people who dont live in this state the revote was actually stopped by Florida democrats, because they could not raise the funds in time to do a revote here (20-30 million dollars).  and we have never had a mail in ballot, so Floridians could not get that together properly in time for August conventions.  Dont believe me, read some of the papers here in Florida.  counting the vote as is disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of voters, think about that.

Above was a comment by another Floridian however I agree.

So Carol speak for your own state.  And leave comments about Florida to Floridians
I think Pelosi's grandstanding is too little too late. Hillary's supporters have lost the point of the election--it's to get a Democrat elected, not to tear down the party by protesting about the civil rights on one candidate. Under Hillary's baton, these people now believe that it's Hillary or bust. And it looks like bust.

The DNC, Pelosi and the SDs sat on the sidelines too long. The general election is being lost with each passing day as Hillary's self-serving shenanigans are allowed to continue.
What gets me most about HRC is her rampant and disgusting sense of "entitlement".  It's almost as if she feels it's against some cosmic law for her NOT to get the nomination, even after the fiasco and farce of her husband's run.  She was all pomp and confidence before this circus started having (what she felt) was an extremely comfortable lead in numbers and personal support...and then the wheels fell off.  Now they're scrambling to find a way to look better than they are, all the while touting some nonsensical parameter as if it's carved-in stone-gospel.  "Leading in the popular vote"...it's amazing that she can say it with enough conviction that not only does she believe her own diatribe, but her supporters do as well...to the point that when she *does* lose this nomination (and she will), her supporters will most likely riot, which is sad.  This was her chance to show the country that maybe she was cut from different cloth than her husband (not that I'm a fan of either of them), instead she's more than likely showing where he got it from.
