A potential compromise

From NBC's Chuck Todd
I have hesitated reporting on every rumor we've heard about a potential compromise in the Florida-Michigan delegate dispute, but there's one plan circulating that seems to be gaining momentum.

This plan would halve the votes for all of the Florida delegates, netting Clinton 19 and, more importantly, counting that popular vote. But Michigan's primary results would not be accepted and, instead, that state's delegates would simply be split 50-50 between Clinton and Obama.

All of the delegations, under this compromise, would be seated in full, but each delegate's vote would be counted as 0.5, including the superdelegates.

Again, this is just one rumored plan, but it's gaining enough support with some that I figured it was worth reporting. Who knows, by tonight, a new compromise plan will become the plan du jour, but for now, get familiar with this idea.

By the way, should this compromise pass, it would mean the new magic number for nomination would be 2,118.

Whatever the number after FL & MI are settled, Barack has more than enough Super-D's in the bank to END THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL and send Hillary Huckabee back to New York ... Thank God!!!

"...by tonight, a new compromise plan will become the plan du jour..."

That would be the "plan du nuit".
What's the bottom line for each campaign?
FedUpDIMWIT, Washington, DC:

I think someone who continues to support a candidate who is corrupt, lies, and has enough scandalous baggage to fill an ocean liner is the "ignorant" one. You "Cling-On" supporters keep edging her on even though you know she's not going to win the nomination, which will only further divide the party and this country, but you don't care about that do you???   She couldn't care less about you and your misplaced infantile admiration.

OBAMA, 2008!
Counting the popular vote? Why. I'm confused by that line since it's entirely meaningless as far as the rules are concerned.
I don't think that this compromise would be badly recieved by the Obama camp; since he has already demonstrated a willingness to do this in the past.

Clinton's camp is another matter altogether. Since this wouyld not "win" her the nomination, look for her to fight this.
I don't like the plan especially about the popular vote which I believe is unfair. Obama did not campaign and others did not vote assuming their vote will not count. With that being said, I think the deal should be accepted which will allow everyone to say that the election is fair and within the rules of the DNC meaning the delegates will be halved. Second, it is time to be truthful about the popular vote argument of Clinton which is false. Her arguement disenfranchising caucus states. I thought Clinton says every vote should count.
The real question now is IF HRC agrees to this now, what prevents her from changing the goals again at the convention and demanding a vote on the floor?

To trust her to keep her word about this is just too bigger stretch based on her past record of agreements.

Geoff
I like to find out about all potential comprimises.  Keep 'em coming.
Yes, by all means, count the popular vote.  However, this is a contest for delegates.  Terry McAuliffe said so himself this morning while being interviewed by Andrea Mitchell and I about chocked on my coffee.
I suspect Obama will obfuscate some more and Clinton will be blamed.
Summer is here!!!! Barack Obama is the democratic nominee.

I went out and bought 3 WWII spy novels and can't wait to sit back and escape from Hillary Clinton and Lanny Davis.

Wonder what the magic number is for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays? Now there's a great comeback if ever there was one.

Hillary would be our nominee by now if Florida and Michigan waited their turn to hold their primaries, say, on super tuesday, and they were fully counted, because Hillary would've won them, hands down, giving her a clear super tuesday victory, and unstoppable momentum.  She is only losing the nomination because of a quirk in party rules, which is artificially benefitting Obama...he is simply unelectable in the general, and any Obamabot who can't grasp that is simply drowning in the kool aide!
Sounds like a plan to me........So let it be said so let it be written........No matter what plan they come up with she still cant catch Obama in the pledge delegates...Geeeeeeeezzzzzzz.....Ok now I get it is despiration just part of a womens make up....Could a women answer this for me.....Cause the race has been over long time ago.......And by the way Altogether Now

Repeat after me:

"GOOD MORNING PRESIDENT OBAMA".......OUR ONLY CHANCE TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK.....AND BRING OUR TROOPS HOME....4100+ DEAD AND RISING.........NO MORE DOA'S.......BUSH\CHENEY = WAR CRIMES.....
Seems fair enough.

Chuck -

I am all for whatever compromise they can work out that the Clintons and their supporters will not protest all the way to the convention. I am disappointed that it will ultimately be unfair to Obama, as neither vote was contested - but as long as they move on and put the issue behind us I am all for it - as it won't change the eventual outcome either way.

Anything at this point!

Can you guys at FR extrapolate any fair popular vote numbers from the caucus states Obama won? It seems unbelievable that Hillary will have "an" argument that she has won the popular vote, but was defeated by delegate math (which make perfect sense to most of us - but think of her supporters). I beleive any coverage of her beating him in the unfair calculations of the popular vote undermines our chances in Novemeber.

Good work as always -
Hopefully this will be the end of this mess.  My question now is how will the "pledged delegates" be selected and what will stop those "pledged delegates" from acting like "superdelegates" and switching allegiances?  Also, I forgot but can you list the number of MI and FL superdelegates again?....And for the super bonus could you list who they're leaning toward?  Thanks.
Here's a compromise. Count the peoples vote!!
Is everyone else as sick of hearing about Florida and Michigan as I am? This is ridiculous! They broke the rules and now the whole party is in an uproar, people are planning demonstrations and TV is providing wall to wall coverage! What is wrong with this picture????
When you report on the possible compromises (and the eventual solution) can you print a revised / projected delegate count so we can see what the impact of the compromise and it's effect on the "magic number" will be
I read a story about Senator Obama playing "Hardball" in chicago politics--I'm glad to know it. Now is the time for that necessary quality to come forth. Playing by the set rules is a "change". Most policticians ignore them, break them or try to re-write them during the game.
I hate the democratic party with full passion, though, i intend to vote for Obama in the fall. The party is being controlled by special interest and Clinton's hack. The party has no leadership whatsoever. They are spineless.

Why are they trying to rob Obama of this nomination? Why are they changing the rules at the middle of the game? Why is media fueling this controversy?
This just in...

Daily Kos has an article that Nancy Polsi said she would step in and NOT allow this to go to the convention for a floor fight... I sure hope that's true because this SOCIOPATH needs to take a long rest!

WHAT an embarassment to the fine thinking woman of this country - this coming from a 40 something educated woman who can't wait to see Obama as POTUS come January!

OBAMA ROCKS!
absolutely absolutel not.................

You dont' reward the Super Delegates for Breaking the rules

Din't the DNC Lawyers say the must split the Delegates by 50% just like the Republicans did and are not complaining?

50% and Equal Split is the only fair and equitable solution.

MI & FL Broke the rules and they should not be rewarded for it.  Sen. Clinton gave her word and took it back, she should not be rewarded for doing that.  Sen. Clinton's only interest in FL & MI is to use these states to get what she wants.

If the Lawyers are correct and they don't follow the rules BY CUTTING THE DELEGATES TO 50% IN EACH STATE you can be sure there will be a LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST THE DNC FOR BREAKING IT'S OWN RULES.

I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THE COURTS WILL NOT THROW THIS SUIT OUT.

AS LONG AS THEY PLAY BY THE RULES EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE.

MILLIONS WILL FILE THIS LAWSUIT IF THE DNC BREAKS IT'S OWN RULES.  FAIR IS FAIR.
If this passes, it will set a new precedence...that anytime you are loosing in an election, you can alter the rules in order to get more votes, regardless of what you pledged to do (or not) previously (and before you were loosing).  I can't believe this is being allowed.  This says alot about our so-called lawmakers.
If this is true, why has'nt Hillary called off her 'Broad's Brigade', or 'Vigilante's for Votes', plan?
Give her the WHOLE thing!  It's not going to matter in the end as Obama will still have the delegates needed.

This way FL and MI get full representation and EVERYONE is happy.

Shame on Gov. Granholm of MI for being 'cute' by defying the DNC moving up the primary.

It's different in FL as the state's Gov and Legislature is solid GOP.  We could expect Charlie and the good-ol-boys in Tallahassee would try to disenfranchise the voters by forcing the primary ahead of Feb 5th.
Nice try, Chuckie - but this will blow up in your suntanned face as I think Obama could still pull out FL in the General.
Either way - both states' voters got hosed by the state, not the candidates or DNC.
I empathize with the VOTERS, so go ahead and seat all the delegates...THIS TIME.
But the DNC needs to enact something so this can never happen again otherwise future states/candidates can 'game the system'.

CUB FANS FOR OBAMA
Why change the rules? DNC this a bunch of bull she agreed to the rules of the contest!  Never and I mean never has any contest chnge the rules so the other team can catch up!  What does this tell the children of America it's ok to cheat and change the rules as needed!
This is a good solution....I have a question. If the Clinton's appeal the decision, and Barack gets past the 2026 delegate next Tuesday. Can he as the nominee seat all the delegates ?
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT THE ACTUAL NUMBERS WOULD BE RIGHT KNOW IF THIS PLAN IS THE ONE THAT IS USED, FOR BOTH CANIDATES
This is such a mess...I am tired of all of it.  Hillary Clinton....is a disgrace to our Democracy.

The sad thing is - others are playing into her delay tactics...the nerve of her trying to fix the game to her benefit and totally disregard the rules that she and other had already agreed upon.

I don't care....I will never vote for Hillary Clinton..I will vote against her in any and everything (and just for the record - it has nothing to with her being a woman- for all you women movement members) at all cost.

I thought about staying home if she stole this nomination...but I would gather my friends and any others to vote for the other guy ..just so she can lose..she don't deserve the Presidency.

Thank you and GOD Bless America
The Democrats really need to quit jerking around the voters of Michigan and Florida and count the votes for each of those two states. How in the world a couple of dozen of the elitist Democratic leaders can determine the fate of these voters is a mystery. Democrats need to stop disrespecting the voters.
Hey, just when is that recssion supposed to get here?
Even if Hillary ever acts as though she is ready to support Obama as our nominee, I would never trust her, and Bill, if she is veep, until January of 2017!
To Chuck Todd:

If this compromise gets legs, then how many delegated would  Obama and Clinton recieve.  That is in Michigan if the split is 50-50 then how many delegates does each receive.  In Florida, How many delegates would go to Obama and to Clinton?

Also playing the numbers game, If Obama received 40 of the remaining pledged delegates, plus the Michigan and Florida delegates, then how many will he need to put closure to the nomination?  I don't care if you post this message, but Obama nation would like to know the significance of this compromise. Thanks
If that works, FINE

Michigan and Florida SHOULD BE PUNISHED for violating the DNC rules

If you don't punish them, more states will break the rules in the future

48 states followed the rules... they should count

and hats off to the voters of Iowa and NH.
they really seemed to take their choices seriously
They should remain as the first two states

Let the small states go first
If Michigan and Florida want influence next time, let them vote on Super Tuesday

It WAS the Democratic politicians in BOTH STATES who decided to break the rules...
Why not disqualify ALL their Super Delegates ?

And don't think Hillary is your friend Michigan and Florida voters....
Guess who she's looking out for ....
Everyone knows that at the end of this Obama will be the nominee. It is a very sad state of affairs when the country Democrats hand the general election over to McCain. All of you who trash talk Clinton were probably not even old enough in the 90's to understand what kind of world we lived in then. As to the Obama biased media, I blame you for the loss of the Clinton campaign. You, "mass-media" have flamed the fires for every attack on Clinton.

As to the "superdelegates" how much are you being paid to endorse Obama? How far up Obama's rear end are you? Are you so far up his rear that you do not see that he will lose against McCain? I believe the system should be changed to reflect the popular vote and do away with all this delegate, superdelegate idiocracy.

Does it matter in the long run that Obama holds the black and young vote? I think not, because they won't be the one's coming out in droves to vote, it will be the people that got shut out, those who supported Clinton, they will be the ones who decide the race.

Clinton '08 or none at all.
Can't see why my idea hasn't gained any traction ... it's the perfect compromise between honoring every vote (no matter how tainted) and honoring the rules.

Seat the Florida delegates based on the election (including the Edwards delegates), but do not seat the superdelegates from Florida. Or Michigan. Rules need to have consequences or we look like a party of weenies. But the voters shouldn't be the ones who lose out, it should be the DNC members and the members of Congress from those states who should be honored to take one for the team.
whatever...I hate Obama, and therefore, will vote Libertarian this year.
How do you score a baseball game, by the number of hits or the number of runs?  Let Hill have the most number of hits with the popular vote but Obama has the most runs with the delegates and that's how the game is scored.  Obama gave up a few hits at the end knowing he would have enough runs and started working on the world's series game.
The solution to this whole mess...who cares?  This is Ralph Nader's year!
The Super Delegates are not stupid.  They know that if Hillary gains the popular vote from some kind of compromise this changes nothing.  It's not as if this is new information, it hasn't swayed them so far and everyone knows what the vote in these two states is.  The Super Delegates are politicians and know that there is no fair way to figure popular vote when there is a combination of Caucus and Primary states, add into that mix that Obama was not on the ballot in MI, many people stayed home in MI and FL and any clear thinking person will not put too much credence to the meaning of "popular vote” At least Obama is willing to compromise, Hillary is not, another personality trait we don't need in a president.
That seems fair enough.  Clinton and Obama were on the ballot in Florida (although, he being the unknown at that time obviously didn't help) but Michigan was obviously a farce with Hillary being the only name on the ticket.  Hopefully her supporters are reasonable people and want to move on so that their candidate doesn't look like a fool and can be appointed to VP or a cabinet position...or the Supreme Court.

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/
And this nonsense that the popular vote is more important than delegates is hooey. It apparently only matters to journalists and the Clinton campaign. Everyone else counts delegates.
Dear voter,

There is nothing "fair" about the insane Democratic Party rules as they stand.   We need to return to winner takes all so that we can avoid this nonsense in 2012.
Cinton-Supporter Protests will commence in...

...3...2...1...NOW!

Senator Clinton and her campaign have the right to appeal the RBC's decision if they don't like it but if Senator Obama hits whatever the new magic number is after Tuesday don't be surprised to see the new troika of Reid, Pelosi and Gore step in and call this.
Clinton, and her half-baked fanatical supporters are on a mission to destroy this party, and our country.  This is really a sad situation.

OBAMA, 2008!
"Hillary would be our nominee by now if Florida and Michigan waited their turn to hold their primaries, say, on super tuesday, and they were fully counted, because Hillary would've won them, hands down, giving her a clear super tuesday victory, and unstoppable momentum.  She is only losing the nomination because of a quirk in party rules, which is artificially benefitting Obama...he is simply unelectable in the general, and any Obamabot who can't grasp that is simply drowning in the kool aide!
Pat Huntington NY"

Pat you gave me the laugh of the day!  Tell me what "unstoppable momentum has Senator Clinton gained?  Was that before or after Senator Obama won over 11 Primaries in a row?  By the way, that "quirk in party rules" is a pesky thing called counting ALL the contests (not just the ones that Senator Clinton thinks are important).

Makes sense - but will SHE go along -- after all, it doesn't make her the nominee for Queen -- I mena President
so I guess any chance of the DNC finding their collective spines and telling Camp Clinton "you signed off on the rules...we're sticking to rules as you agreed to in October" is totally out the door? The dems look so weak now..bending to the the Clinton machine...they gave her the power they need to take it back.
