McCain: experience, experience

Posted: Friday, May 30, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray

CBN's Brody has a sitdown with McCain senior adviser Charlie Black. Check out how many times Black utters the word "experience" in this one answer: "Senator Obama for all his magnetism and appeal is not very experienced and the experience he has had is that of a sort of a conventional, liberal politician. It's hard to find incidents where he has taken political risks to work across party lines or get things done like Sen. McCain has, but it's most important in the area of national security. We've been debating about a Iran and Iraq with him, and Sen. McCain truly believes that if he had more experience and especially if he went to Iraq and got experience meeting with the generals and the troops and seeing what's going on in the ground maybe he would see we shouldn't pull out of Iraq. But as we say, experience informs judgment and it's hard to have good judgment on national security if you have no experience."

Six times in about 30 seconds.

Did all the big papers agree to write big profiles of McCain today? The New York Times focuses on the period when McCain decided to enter politics. Of particular interest is that his mentor was John Tower and that the early friendships he struck up with then-Sens. Bill Cohen and Gary Hart. Both senators, for what it’s worth, are now reliable Democrats or lean Dem.

The Los Angeles Times looks at McCain's decision to run for office in Arizona

The Boston Globe: “McCain, a 45-year-old former Navy officer and decorated prisoner of war, moved to Arizona -- home to his new wife, Cindy, a Phoenix beer heiress -- with little more than a plan to run for Congress. McCain's inaugural campaign and his first, low-profile term in Congress were crucial to the formation of his political identity, according to a review of McCain's congressional papers made available to the Globe.

“Many of the issues McCain first encountered then have stayed with him as a presidential candidate a generation later. He allied himself with environmentalist and immigrant causes popular among Democrats, while showing little zeal for social issues, such as abortion, dear to many Republicans. When it came to national security, McCain feared repeating the quagmire of Vietnam - and believed earning public support was crucial to military success abroad. Far from today's rebellious, self-described maverick who rails jokingly against Washington as the "City of Satan," McCain introduced himself to voters in 1982 as a Capitol insider, based on his three years as the Navy's Senate liaison.”

Bloomberg News writes, “McCain has lost five top aides amid suggestions that his campaign was dominated by lobbyists, a shakeup that's created tension among remaining staffers; his image as a crusader against ‘special interests' has been tarnished; and his response to the first rough patch of his general-election race leaves him vulnerable to further attacks, because lobbyists and former lobbyists continue to help his candidacy, including as fundraisers.”

The Los Angeles Times has an interesting story on McCain's YouTube problem. The most popular McCain YouTube clips are not very flattering.

It was the experienced politicians like McCain and Clinton that got us into the middle of a civil war in Iraq.  If the inexperienced politicians like Obama had made the decisions, we would not have been stuck in this endless war. I will take judgment over experience any day of the week.

Obama/Sebelius in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
With all McCain's experience, he made the wrong call on Iraq. With all Obama's 'inexperience', he had the foresight to get it right. He was right about the war being wrong, and he was right about WHY it was wrong - all the reasons he gave for why we should not go there have been borne out over the last 6 years.
Anyone who votes based on YouTube clips should have their voting rights be taken away.  Please, I beg all Americans to actually look at the candidates and their stances (not their speeches or claims) but where they stand.  Not on some talk show or stump speech

If Obama is truely the person who you feel has a better position with his far left wing ideals then vote for him.  If you want a more conservative sided person who is willing to stand up to people yet still has a more moderate side to him then vote for McCain.

Experience, Experience? True, True! Obama can barely get through an interview because he can't use a teleprompter. The man is a walking cliche, and is nearly a parody of himself. Listen to McCain. He knows what he's talking about, and he knows how to get thigs done. Match McCain's senate record to that of Obama's, there is no comparison. The record shows that Obama has barely been able to vote, let alone take ownership of any legislation and shepard it through to completion. Also, McCain is a centrist, able to work with both Dems and Reps, while Obama is a far to the left extreme liberal. Obama would have trouble working with even the more moderate wing of his own party, let alone with the Republicans. The choice is clear.
Barack Obama would be the second term of Jimmy Carter, and the first term of Michael Dukakis. Not very appealing.
'Experience', 'naive', 'typical liberal'...yes, yes.
Like Hillary's 'ready on day one'. OLD politics.
Out of touch. Mantras. The young make a game out of it-have to make a donation or take a shot of something alcohol everytime they speak in that OLD, unoriginal, cliched way.
I've started doing the mental tally as they speak too.
Then they start to look like robots.
... but, what has all of this 'experience' gotten us?

War.  A troubled economy.  Crumbling schools.

Yeah, give me some more of that 'experience' please.

WITH THE MESS THIS COUNTRY IS IN IT DOES NOT SEEM LIKE TOUTING WASHINGTON EXPERIENCE WOULD BE A GOOD THING.DO YOU NEED EXPERIENCE TO KEEP PULLING THE WOOL OVER THE AMERICAN PEOPLE EYES?
McCain cloaks himself in a lot of cheap political rhetoric because he doesn't really want to get down and dirty with Obama on the issues.  He just keeps saying the same thing over and over again and has cornered the market on acting indignant and affronted.

Just watch him in the months ahead.
I guess the McCain campaign hasn't bothered watching anything the last year... you know, where Clinton pounded Obama on "experience" and how it went no where.  She got pounded when that was her position.  Only after she pandered to low income people did she do better.

But hey John, keep going with the experience and war route.
Experience is what led us to war. The war was not necesasary and McClellan said in his book the immenent danger was exaggerated to get us to war. Considering all of the experience in washington, no one questioned the intelligence, and the reason for the rush to war without confirming the accuracy of the information. Clinton and probably others did not read the report. All of the members of congress was duped. It cost the U.S. 4,500 soldiers and billions of dollars. Experience is not important if you lack judgement. The members of congress should have known better.
Yes we all know about "Bush Hugger" McCain's being very experienced at the corrupt old ways of self serving Washington DC politics, and that's what has screwed up our country since "Alzheimer" Reagan.  His experience isn't worth anything for leading our country out of the mess his experience has helped dig us into.

It's way past time to get rid of these experienced corrupters of democracy and to put a new face with a new approach into the White House, and that's Barack Obama.  His intelligence and his roots as a common man, not some spoiled elitist rich brat born with a silver spoon in his mouth, have given the common people a new champion to help even out the inequalities brought about by the conservative lunatic fringe who only do things for their rich and greedy masters.

Go Obama 08/12!
I get a real laugh at those who suggest that we Obama supporters are vile and insulting because we support Obama.  We're insulting because of the way our candidate has been mistreated by one of our own party and her vile and insulting supporters.  We're just not going to allow people to trash talk our candidate with impunity.  If you don't like the way we trash talk your candidate then maybe you should try paying our candidate some respect.

We're going to be even more vile and insulting against our true common enemy "Bush Hugger" McCain because that's the way the repugnant ones play the game and we're not going to take a back seat to anyone in the trash talking department.  After 8 years of constant trash talking by the clueless ones of the conservative lunatic fringe we're going to come out blasting these nasty mouthed fools with their own style of game.

If they don't like it then I have 3 words for them: "Get Over It"!  Sound familiar?

Go Obama 08/12!
The 'experience', tac will fall flat.

Ask Hillary how well she fared with that strategy.

The McCain team are no think tankers.
Just look at where we are in this nation with all the "experience" on captitol hill.  How many years was Bush a govenor?  How many years has McCain been a Senator and what does he really have to show for it?  Nada thing!  It appears to me that in light of our country being at war-with troops dying-very serious, a national debt accumalating at a record pace and an economy grinding to a stand still, that the only remedies that the McCain camp can offer is a "Gameshow
Host" mentality!  Let's see how many days has it been since Senator Obama has visitied Iraq?  Anyone, Anyone?  This nation needs an effective, proven leader and in my opinion, Senator Obama has proven that he can organizeand manage an effective campaign to bring down one of the established Washington insiders in a sophisticated, lucrative manner.  Senator Obama runs circles around McCain in every area of leadership skills and abilities.  You go right ahead-McCane-and run your little gameshow, we are going to win an election!

Obama 08

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Yeah - look where EXPERIENCE got us.  Bush had so many men with EXPERIENCE - Rummy, Pork Chop Butt, et al...and their pompousness knew no bounds.
Look at the mess this country is in with their EXPERIENCE. If we do not get this straightened out, we might as well kiss our butts goodbye.  We do not need all of that experience. Lets' see, Graham, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, Monica, Lies, soldiers dead, high gas, no jobs, (Bill Clinton signed NAFTA), Who signed the WTO (for China) Bill Clinton. We have had enough.

This false war hero has done nothing but rely upon his status as a POW to propel his worthless hide into politics.  He should have been nailed for his role in the Keating 5 scandal but his role as a POW kept him out of trouble.  It's way past time to stop mollycoddling this self serving liar and to expose his corrupt dealings with corrupt people.

The only word that truly describes this charlatan is CORRUPT, and anyone who supports "Bush Hugger" McCain is intellectually corrupt as well!

Go Obama 08/12!
Mr.Black...What experience do you get for photo opps,on bombers last trip that is what we saw,and how does bomber do when he  stands alone.I have yet to see your canadate alone when there is no one over his shoulder making sure he does not misspeak, like on his last trip to Iraq. His experience in the Military came in the 70's,so I don't think he has much of that to fall back on.Going to Iraq and staying in the green zone and never going out to see the real fighting men and woman really isn't getting a feel of the real experience.Being a pilot in the navy is a whole differant world then being a fighting soldier on the ground.
McCain may be a flawed candidate but I'll take the experienced old guy over the flashy inexperienced guy any day of the week.  Face it Obama-bots:  the guy is an empty suit with an angry wife.
John McCain has two problems if he continues to play the experience card.  First, recall that several weeks ago he took great pain to deny rumors that he stated at a Hollywood party that he did not vote for Bush in 2000.  He insisted that he did vote for Bush.  In 2000 Bush had absolutely no foreign policy experience and Al Gore had been a congressman, senator, and vice president.  John should explain to his "friends" why he ignored experience and voted for Bush.
Second, if we're looking at experience that logically brings up Dick Cheney.  The man has more experience than anyone else -- White House Chief of Staff, Congressman, Defense Secretary, International Businessman and Vice President.  Dick Cheney was wrong about WMDs, wrong about a link betwen Hussein and 9/11, wrong that we were going to be greeted as liberators, wrong that the insurgency was in its last throes, and wrong that Rummy was doing a great job.

My friends, experience doesn't translate into wisdom.

GW 1970
So how much experience did GWB and his bunch of neo-con ninnies come to the White House with?

Must not be much considering the mess we're in

Why don't we just annex the Middle East - like Hawaii? - We could have some new states with lots of oil!

And how much experience running a country does a senator get? Not much from what I've seen!

Some of the posters to various blogs I've read need to "lighten up" - before they burn out a bearing!
John, MI well said.

I like Obama's views, you like McCain's.  I don't hate you OR McCain I just love my country.  (though I extremely dislike Bush :P )
i agree mccant has the most experience in bs.
Dick Cheney has a lot of experience.... as much as McCain if not more. If this were about experience then Cheney would be running for President. But this is the only card McCain can play because the GOP is desperate to hide their failed policies of the last 8 years. Let’s face it the Republicans really have nothing else to run on. Seriously. They have destroyed this country and no matter what nonsense they try to distract the American with they will pay in NOV. Their sinking fast and they now it.
Mccain has experience as a long time Washington insider, therefore knows nothing about what is happening in the country. He also has lots of experience as a bush lapdog. We don't need or want his kind of experience!
